Huisfit on track for a flourishing winter period

The refit facility has provided details on its busy refit period, which will see a total of seven projects….

Dutch refit facility Husfit, Royal Huisman’s dedicated refit division, has reported that the upcoming winter refit period is becoming increasingly busy, as the shipyard confirms that a further two sailing yachts have signed up for various commissions in the coming weeks. Having now begun work on two of the largest sailing yachts in the fleet (S/Y Eos and S/Y Athena ), the shipyard has provided details on the extensive work commissioned at the Dutch refit facility.

“All is progressing on schedule,” says the shipyard, regarding the major refit of 90m S/Y Athena , which arrived at the shipyard on the 6th August. So far, the main engines and generators are nearly completed and half of the original teak has been removed. The superyacht was hauled out of the water last week and moved into Huisfit’s refit shed, in which she will remain for the duration of her winter refit period. Athena underwent a refit during the same winter period in 2014, after logging a series of impressive expeditions around the globe.

Work is also well underway on 93m S/Y Eos , as the Rondal rigs have been removed for inspection and re-painting. Soon, the yacht will also be relocated to a covered hall for the remainder of her refit period. Since its completion at Lürssen in 2006, S/Y Eos has been a regular customer at Huisfit. The project is expected to include an overhaul of her MTU 4000 series main engines, servicing and overhaul of shaft lines, gearboxes, thrusters and stabilisers, repaint and varnish of the hull, superstructures and rig.

The 34m Frers designed S/Y S piip has also now arrived at Huisfit for a short stop-over that will include an array of service work such as various electric and electronics upgrades. Huisfit has also seen the arrival of 39m S/Y Vagrant . The vessel, launched in 1913,  is currently being completely rebuilt at the shipyard in Vollenhove. The team has been briefed to reconstruct the sailing yacht to her former glory. As a result, she has been fully stripped and sandblasted. Her relaunch is scheduled for the spring of 2019 when the project will endure a period of sea trials and final testing of her sailing systems.

Huisfit has confirmed that its 2018-2019 winter refit period will see a total of seven projects, including those listed above.

Busy Winter Season for Feadship Refit & Services

By Christina Tsangaris

In a huge milestone for the Refit & Services programme that Feadship officially began offering in 2018, at least ten yachts are arriving in the Netherlands for a winter season of refurbishments, upgrades and renovations at the four Feadship yards. To most of the yachts originally built by Feadship, it will be a homecoming, as wherever practical the yachts will return to the yards of their launch. Some vessels are yachts from other northern European yards whose owners are also Feadship clients, according to Pier Posthuma de Boer, Refit & Services Director.

These projects will bring updates to yachts as new as the well-traveled 2018 Sherpa and the hard-working Gallant Lady launched in 1996. Work booked ranges from routine service and warranty work or class-required surveys to major refits to systems and interiors, says Posthuma de Boer.

Returning Home Returning to the Dutch yards is one that owners who want their Feadships to remain Feadships seem increasingly willing to do, especially if they are planning on enjoying some Baltic or high latitudes cruising. “Where the Makkum shipyard was historically the main focus of Feadship’s Refit & Services programmes, the Amsterdam yard now also offers easy entry for the yachts and we have all the services either alongside or within the huge new construction hall, but we also have yachts going to Kaag and Aalsmeer this winter ,” says Posthuma de Boer. While Feadship has teamed up with three Mediterranean yards and one in the US (Amico & Co in Italy, Monaco Marine in France, MB92 in Spain, and Rybovich in the United States) to work with Feadship on refit and maintenance projects, nothing beats having the yachts back with the same teams that designed and built them. “If something unexpected comes up, we have access to two hundred engineers at Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects and many more at all four of our shipyards” he notes.

Access to De Voogt’s engineering staff is also a great plus for owners wanting to implement new technology to modernize their yachts. Examples of this, run the gamut from completely replacing engine room control rooms, installing state of the art power generation units instead of conventional diesel generators, adding improved sewage treatment plants to the latest environmental norms, switching to all LED lighting, or revamping bridges with all new electronics. Among the frequent requests for structural changes are providing new boarding apparatus and creating beach clubs, whether that means a hull addition or revamping a lazarette. Having the same teams that built the yacht make the changes, removes any doubt about the overall quality and pedigree of the refitted yacht.

More Flexibility & Capacity Involving all the new-build yards gives Feadship more flexibility and capacity for its Refit & Services programme, which is managed by a team encompassing 75 individuals from project managers to dedicated purchasing and accounting specialists. Yachts booked for refits and repairs are assigned a project manager and project coordinator who work solely on that project to completion. “It is in our interest to stick to a time frame for delivery because the yachts are scheduled right in along with new builds in the same facilities,” says Posthuma de Boer.

While Feadship would prefer to help yachts develop one-, three- and five-year maintenance plans, the Covid-19 experience and recent explosion in brokerage yacht sales have meant that the Refit & Services Department has been inundated with shorter-term refit requests. “It’s all about serving our clients and looking at prioritizing what work needs to be done, where it can be done and how to fit the client’s schedule, ” Posthuma de Boer says.

Some of the yachts arriving for work this fall and winter are:

Harle (2007) , Sherpa (2018) , Moonrise (2020), Gitana (ex-Katrion 1997), Gallant Lady (1996) , Najiba (2019) .

"It’s all about serving our clients and looking at prioritizing what work needs to be done, where it can be done and how to fit the client’s schedule." Posthuma de Boer, Feadship

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

Founded by ex super yacht captain and sailor Steve Branagh in 2005, the RSB Rigging Solutions has grown annually both in number of clients as well as reputation. The year 2014 has been no exception.

Wally 105 sailing yacht Nariida re-stepped by RSB Rigging Solutions

Wally 105 sailing yacht Nariida re-stepped by RSB Rigging Solutions

Throughout the winter/spring refit season RSB Rigging Solutions has put a massive eighteen Superyachts with a total of 24 masts through full rig refit programs and also found time to remove 5 communications masts from 3 large powerboats. While all this was going on the running rigging department have produced 26 kilometers of running rigging and mooring lines for projects ranging from new build Superyachts to 75 meter powerboats.

Russ Brown, operations manager of RSB states: “We have had an exceptional winter yard period this year. The whole team has worked incredibly hard and really pulled together to deliver an extraordinary number of completed refit programs as well as all the other projects we have have undertaken at the same time. So much so that we have recruited new riggers throughout the season in order to keep up with demand.

Our client list of motor yachts has also been growing steadily for the last two years, with this year being at an all time high. Our splicing team has built mooring lines for yachts such as superyacht Kisses , luxury yacht Bartender , mega yacht Ilona , Eminence yacht , charter yacht Slipstream and super yacht Tranquility to name just a few.”

During the winter RSB had a few firsts for Palma de Mallorca, including re-stepping three large rigs in two days ( Perini Ketch S/Y Is a Rose , and McMullen & Wing built charter yacht Nephele ), as well as un-stepping the heaviest rig ever to be pulled in Palma ; the 20 Ton main mast from the 56 meter Perini ketch S/Y Asahi .

While Palma is the hub of operations for RSB they have also sent their rigging technicians further afield with trips to Finland for the refit on the Wally 105 ketch Nariida and Cartegena for the Swan 100 yacht Muzuni rig pull and refit.

Steve Branagh, founder of RSB Rigging Solutions says: “We are very proud of our team and their achievements throughout the winter and spring. Currently the pace has not let up with a number of yachts choosing to carry out refit work over the summer period meaning we will remain busy right through until the autumn when it all starts again.…we are already expecting to match this year in 2015.

The fact that our work force is now so international speaks volumes. We are very lucky to have recruited such a skilled and hard working team. It is a real testament to everyone that we are so busy throughout the year with many of the guys regularly asked to crew on various boats at regattas all over the world.”

The Breakthrough Of The Superyacht Refit In Croatia

superyacht winter refit

Once popular with only hard-core sailing types, today the islands of Croatia are teeming with stars and moguls in the summer months on their mammoth yachts. When you’re sitting in the perfect anchorage, feasting on freshly caught lobsters after a morning snorkelling, you have to agree that Croatia has truly established itself as one of the top superyacht cruising destinations on the planet.

superyacht winter refit

Premium Superyacht Refit In Croatia

Lesser known are the superyacht refit and repair facilities in the country- who are checking under the hood and sprucing up these beautiful yachts for the summer cruising season. Our sources tell us a new MY Anna is currently in build in Holland, so we thought we’d look back at the at the current MY Anna (Feadship, 2007) who spent three winter periods with CAPAX Marine Engineering in Croatia for refit and maintenance.

At 67m, MY Anna is as much of a beauty today as when she was fresh out of the yard. And this is also thanks of course to her excellent maintenance along the way courtesy of her professional yacht crew.

Mario Baljkas, the project manager for MY Anna told us:

“We performed a variety of specialist works on her at the SCT Shipyard – 3 dry dock periods over 5 years – for the maintenance of her teak, marble and some stainless steel parts, including a modification of a complete hot water pipeline in the engine room. We installed a pneumatic golf platform on the deck. We also had a very special request for her prized piano and brought on a world famous master tuner from the Croatian National Concert Hall to help us with that.”

superyacht winter refit

Getting Ready For The Charter Season

This doesn’t surprise us. We got to know Capax a few years back via Ian Robertson, captain of MY JO who introduced us to Teo Petricevic, Managing Director of the company.

He remarked:

“You must get to know Teo. We went into refit and had three consecutive charter seasons back to back without a hitch. They brought on an expert marble tradesman who was so precise in his work that I had to finally tell him to relax a bit… the general level of technicians they brought onboard during our superyacht refit in Croatia were exceptional.”

So off we went to meet Teo in Sibenik, who besides being one of the nicest guys in the industry also knows how to pick a great restaurant.

Without a lot of fuss or fanfare, Capax is carefully taking care of these yachts in an area that isn’t particularly known for winter refit.

“If you can just imagine in 2008 Croatia still was not in the EU, but this completely new business was growing so fast and the superyachts were flocking here. There was a tremendous amount of growth and we’ve worked hard to meet the expectations of the superyacht industry’s high level of service. Every project is a challenge, but we have a fantastic team and their loyalty, professionalism and willingness to go the extra mile is really the key to our success.”

Capax Ltd. specialises in technical management, consulting and supervision of new builds and refit activities. Also an authorised partner for the most prevalent marine engines and gear boxes in this market segment including Caterpillar, MTU, John Deere, ZF.

Winter Berths: The New Superyacht Marinas

winter berthing night 300

Gone are the days when yachting was restricted to the crowded coastline of the Cote d'Azur, and France held the monopoly on impressive marinas.

As the marina industry develops, so too does the choice of attractive destinations for owners to berth their yachts.

With new marinas opening in Barcelona, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, Montenegro and Croatia, owners are able to look further afield in order to find a suitable (and often more financially reasonable) home for the winter months.

“It’s just great that owners have options now and that there are value propositions out there in really interesting new developments,” says Kurt Fraser, the marketing and sales director for Camper & Nicholsons Marinas . “I don’t think you can say one location will or will not work for wintering. It’s a sort of different-strokes-for-different-folks type of thing.”

And while the South of France is certainly not in danger of losing its appeal, it seems that new marinas and new destinations are finally beginning to compete with the established ports.

For example, only 100 nautical miles from Monaco, Porto Mirabello in La Spezia has seen significant growth since it opened in 2010. Its proximity to France, along with its enviable situation between the shipyard hubs of both Genoa and Viareggio, has made the new marina a viable up-and-coming port. Meanwhile, it also has quick access to Corsica and other popular cruising grounds nearby.

Mountains

Finally, Morley notes that the marina village boasts over 50 retail stores, amenities and restaurants. The hub of crew activity tends to be The Clubhouse bar at the five-star Regent Hotel, and a nightclub called MyCrew operates year round.

For more information about Porto Montenegro, or to write a review, click here

Different strokes, different folks

As marinas develop and diversify to attract the roving yachting dollar, yachts seeking practical and cost-effective berths are increasingly moving away from the traditional Mediterranean hotspots.

With all of these diverse new options, there is a winter berthing arrangement to suit every yacht owner, while ports are also striving to create an enjoyable winter home for crew.  The Mediterranean yachting map is changing.

Why do owners have a superyacht refit done on their vessel?

Having a superyacht built is a major decision. It implies the future owner spent months and sometimes years in having her designed and decorated to his or her taste. Having their vessel refit is a way to keep the existing yacht and improve her.

Each superyacht refit is unique, and the scope of work will vary based on factors such as the age, the condition of the vessel, the owner's preferences, and any specific requirements or regulations that need to be addressed.

The refit can cover a wide range of aspects, depending on the particular needs and desires of the owner. Different from regular maintenance a refit can be decided to improve some of the performances, to change some of the decoration or furniture. It provides the owner the chance to keep the vessel while giving her a lift.

While the list of possibilities described here after can be applied to medium-sized yachts or superyachts, the aspects and needs may be similar for both categories. The major difference will be that superyachts often require more extensive and specialized work due to their larger size and more complex systems.

Exterior Refinishing

The most visible refit one can do to a yacht is refinish her exterior. This includes hull painting, varnishing or changing the wood work, changing some stainless steel, and refinishing other exterior surfaces such as the flooring.

Adding, changing or redesigning areas such as the beach club access, the sunbathing area, the deck shower, or enlarging a bar are only a few examples of what can be done so the owner, his family and guests can enjoy the exterior of the vessel as much as possible.

Deck Equipment

The deck equipment also gets to be renewed to upgrade equipment such as hydraulic systems for tender lifts, davits, and other deck accessories.

Interior Refurbishment

Updating or refurbishing the interior spaces is only limited to one’s imagination. Despite meticulous maintenance, some of the carpeting needs replacing while some other areas can become more appealing and create a desired aesthetic aftera lifting.

Changing the furnishing and the upholstery in the cabins, the saloons, and the dining areas, to name a few can rejuvenate a room. Adding or renewing some new trendy decorative elements will improve the comfortable feeling one will have onboard.

The crew quarters are no exception. A superyacht interior refit often includes re-thinking for the better some of these areas designed to be optimised so that the crew members have every available space occupied to be as practical as possible.

Galley and Catering Equipment

The goal is the same when re-doing a galley. As chefs need to have everything handy to deliver gourmet cuisine to the owner and the guests, reassessing the areas proves to be beneficial. Upgrading galley appliances, refrigeration systems, and catering equipment is paramount to meet the demands of onboard dining and hospitality.

Mechanical Systems Overhaul

To maintain optimal performance of the onboard mechanical systems a superyacht refit can include the replacement of engines, generators, propulsion systems, HVAC systems, and other mechanical components.

Your yacht propellers can also require changing or balancing. A well-cleaned and maintained propeller will always perform better than a dirty or bent one. A visual inspection will reveal if it needs tidying up, repairing or replacing. Having your superyacht at the yard for her refit, it the perfect opportunity to check the propellers and take actions if needed.

Electrical Systems Upgrades

To improve automation and control, it’s necessary to upgrade or replace electrical wiring, distribution panels, and lighting systems, and integrate smart technology. This can also include having new LED panels installed in specific rooms or changing some of the ceiling lighting.

Navigation and Communication Systems

Your superyacht refit can be the perfect opportunity for updating or installing new navigation equipment, communication systems, radar, sonar, yacht stabilizers, and satellite technology for enhanced safety and connectivity.

It’s the ideal time for an owner to be sure his vessel is equipped with the latest technology as far as navigation is concerned.

superyacht winter refit

Entertainment Systems

Having a new entertainment system installed onboard can be a lengthy operation as all of the cables need to go behind the wall panels. However, with all the evolution in the sector, it’s essential to plan to upgrade audiovisual equipment, satellite TV systems, cinema setups, and internet connectivity to provide the latest in onboard entertainment.

Security Systems

To protect the vessel and the guests onboard, one can enhance security with the installation of surveillance cameras, motion sensors, access control systems, and alarms to protect the vessel and its occupants.

Safety Equipment

Although a yacht doesn’t need to go to a shipyard to maintain her regular safety equipment, if an owner wishes to replace the fire suppression systems, emergency lighting, and other essential safety gear to meet regulatory standards and ensure passenger safety, he can do while the yacht is undergoing a refit.

Environmental Upgrades

In the last decade, the yachting sector has made enormous progress in preserving the environment and yacht owners are keen to implement eco-friendly solutions suchas waste management systems, energy-efficient appliances, and alternative propulsion systems to reduce the vessel's environmental impact.

To reduce their carbon impact some vessels are seizing the opportunity of their superyacht refit to have other fittings done such as a heat recovery system upgrade, window film application, storage and energy-saving installations.

The cost of a yacht or a superyacht refit will depend on the equipment and the raw materials used in the refit, the duration and the size of the yacht.

To get a better understanding of the pricing, Monaco Marine attributes a project management team which includes a project manager and an assistant for all refit projects. They will help you estimate the length of time and the cost involved in your upcoming refit project.

5 Things you must consider for a superyacht refit success

superyacht winter refit

A guide to good practice.

The refit period is an important part of the calendar for every vessel , especially in the case of superyachts . Whether it’s for a rehaul , repairs , or upgrades under a TPA regime (Inward Processing) , refit is something that every owner, captain and crew experiences at some point and it’s important to manage it properly not to overrun on timing or unexpected costs .

A refit is considered successful when it is done on time, inside the agreed budget and with the expected quality. Check out Evolutions 5 keys to a successful refit below!

Organize your refit project

The organization and preparation of your refit project is the most crucial step of the entire process. Start planning the project early , make sure all parties are "on-board" - the captain, crew, owner, management company and yard or marina all need to understand the goals and expectations of the refit . Time management is crucial with so many moving parts; each stage needs to be carefully planned to ensure fluidity and optimum use of shipyard and contractors' time. A well-planned and well-executed agenda can reduce costs and allow a higher probability of meeting deadlines .

Close a budget

The refit budget is usually a controversial aspect of the project. It’s common that owners, shipyards, Captains, and project managers differ in opinion on the final figure . Of course, owners would like it to be as low as possible without compromising quality and shipyards will likely push for a higher budget and possibly more works. Captains and project managers will be somewhere in the middle trying to the most of it but ensuring that all the objectives are reached to the satisfactory level .

For a realistic budget, one must determine the parameters of the project with a clear vision , making sure all possible expenses are considered, gather competing quotes if possible and make sure contracted parties understand the requirements. Consider possible indirect costs such as crew housing if crew can't stay onboard, safety training, protection material, extra hands (temporary crew or dayworkers), supplementary catering or transport costs. And above all, allow for the unexpected! It's always good to have a "buffer" budget in case plans deviate a little from the expected path!

Be prepared for anything

In a big project such a superyacht refit, you need to be prepared for everything .  Unavoidable delays, surprise discoveries or improvement ideas may pop up along the way changing the timeline and costings.

Maintaining an open mind is key , a reputable shipyard will give advice and recommendations based on experience from previous projects , of course the Captain or project manager will have experience also, pooling all advice and information will provide the most beneficial outcome.  Almost as important as Plan A is, of course Plan B! Having a backup plan for possible changes is a must and another key factor to a successful refit !

Promote an optimal communication between different parties

Communication between parties is critical during the whole refit process .  Many mistakes, delays or misunderstanding can stem from a lack of communication. Not only in the planning process but as works develop, keep all relevant parties informed by means of weekly progress reports of meetings for example, or invest in a software application that key players have access to so they may monitor and update as appropriate.

Promoting optimal communication between different parties will ensure that projects move forward efficiently , misunderstandings are averted, and necessary changes can be accommodated as needed. A cross-party team that communicates well is bound to produce the best results , with the end result being a refit completed to satisfaction, close to or on budget and everyone involved cementing a good relationship for future projects.

Refit guide: Top tips for a quick superyacht refit

Whether buying a second-hand yacht or looking to refresh the interior of an existing one, few owners want to undergo a lengthy refit process. “Usually we’ll get an order in January, and the owners want to be back on the water by June, if not Easter,” says Francesca Muzio, of Italian design studio FM Architettura d’Interni . When speed is a priority, it’s always a challenge for designers and shipyards. “A refit is no less involved than a new-build project,” says yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni . “You have to understand what’s there and how to work with it before you start on design solutions.” You also have to retain “the soul of the boat”, says Laura Pomponi, of Luxury Projects . You don’t want to strip everything out and be left with something unrecognisable. So how does one overhaul a yacht interior , within a limited timescale, without affecting the boat’s overall character? Read these seven rules to find out...

Look at the basics

“Never underestimate how much of an impact adding in new fabrics and loose furniture has on the feel of a boat,” says Charlie Baker of RWD . “When you board a yacht after a refresh, you realise how tough the impact of salt and sunlight really are.” When time is short, you’ll need soft furnishings and fabric options available at short notice, but, says Pomponi, “designers are often strategic in only showing these options to clients”. New artworks and decorative accessories are an easy addition too. “They’re an instantly impactful way to add a personal touch.”

Avoid major structural changes

If speed is your priority in a refit, avoid altering major structures such as steel bulkheads, which lead to engineers and possibly classification organisations and a lengthier process. If structural changes are compulsory, “planning is paramount”, says Baker. “On Ilona [pictured], which went through fairly major changes last year, the work in the yard was done quickly but the planning and preparation was done well in advance to minimise the time the boat was out of action.”

Play with light

Lighting tech has come a long way, and modernising systems can enhance the feel of a yacht. “If there are halogen spots, introducing LED technology, string lights and multiple dimmable circuits can create a totally different ambience,” says Pomponi. Baker adds that one should also consider updating the flow of natural light. “Window treatments can make a room feel completely different. How a sheer curtain or blind reacts with light through a porthole or window can soften a formerly stark room,” he says.

Work with what you have

“Furniture and joinery can be retained but modernised,” says Pomponi. “A high-gloss dark panel could be treated with a multi-step varnish removal and lime-washing process, for instance, and brass fittings or hardware can be turned into silver or chrome. On the refit of Nero [pictured], we used a product that gave an aged patina look to the portholes for a new look.”

Adapt, don’t alter

A smart designer will look at adapting existing elements rather than stripping them out. Muzio references a past project, where mother-of-pearl veneers were used throughout, to the dismay of the owner. “Re-veneering is a big job, but we found a way to cover the panels with leather instead.” One can also look at adapting how spaces are used. “Refits often involved modernising a boat to focus more on a more relevant lifestyle. In the past we have turned a library into a corner for amenities for the spa .”

Work with the right team

According to Baker, a dedicated owner’s rep is essential on any project. “They can make all the difference to a project running smoothly and efficiently.” And Sorgiovanni says choosing a yard with experience in refits is also vital. “Things can go wrong if you work with a second-tier yard. I would always recommend using some of the traders that built the vessel in the first place.”

Look at the technology

Nothing moves faster than tech , and it’s not unusual to find systems significantly out of date. Replacing televisions or speakers is easy, but if you’re looking to update the systems entirely, Baker recommends using a specialist audiovisual and tech consultant. “As well as ensuring you have something that meets your requirements now, they’ll ensure a system can be put in place with added flexibility, so your yacht can also be ready for the next gen of tech when the time comes.”
