The new Swan 55 should appeal to owner-drivers, couples and families and follows the successful launch of the Swan 58 just last year

Product Overview

Why bring out a Swan 55 when you only launched a Swan 58 last year? Because they’re different boats aimed at different types of sailors and owners, says Nautor. Both are drawn by the legendary German Frers, but where the 58 is a small 60 and may often be used with professional crew, the Swan 55 is more aimed at owner-drivers, couples and families.

The Swan 55 has a modern, beamy hull form, albeit combined with some of that deep V hull which has helped make the Swan 54 so seaworthy. It also has a lower style fixed bowsprit and a completely new beach club transom design which opens and extends out on rams to create a massive bathing platform as well as revealing a lazarette and tender garage for a 2.5m RIB.

More big-boat features include options for a staysail on a ram, an electric Code fuler on the sprit, a captive mainsheet and a hydraulic gangplank. The cockpit has the smart twin telescopic tables seen on the 58, which can combine to seat 12 around, and features five electric winches as standard.

The interior invokes the cosy feeling of the 54, but with more space, in a three cabin, two heads layout, which includes a practical utility cabin with workbench and stowage in the port aft section.

A real draw is the master cabin, which is up forward again like the 54, and the options this now allows. Swan is considering offering it as a ‘super suite’ – if the Pullman cabin is removed, this space can open out to be used as a full office or TV suite adjoining the cabin and so become an indulgent two-cabin fast cruiser!

A performance version with square top mainsail and longer bowsprit is also offered.

Swan 55 : Finest Finnish - pretty close to perfection

Michael Good

 ·  02.11.2023

Germán Frers' clear, modern lines are pleasing to the eye. Like all Swans, the 55 is an excitingly beautiful ship

A visit on board is accompanied by many emotions. Joy at the sheer beauty, awe at the outstanding construction and finishing quality, respect for the excitingly complex and high-quality on-board technology and enthusiasm for the many small details that make the yacht what it is: a Swan.

The Italian-owned Finnish yacht builder Nautor has now launched the Swan 55, a modern successor to the highly successful 54. This means that the Swan range in the "lower" segment between 48 and 58 feet is once again bang up to date, with no fewer than four models, including the new Swan 51, which was recently announced at the trade fair in Cannes as a novelty for 2024.

The Swan 55 is unmistakably a Swan

The design for the new ship naturally comes once again from the office of Argentinean Germán Frers, who also designs for Hallberg-Rassy, among others. As for the Swedes, Frers works for the Finns from Nautor Swan with a very strong focus on line fidelity and brand homogeneity. A Swan is a Swan - unmistakable.

Double rudder blades are a Frers hobbyhorse. All eight models in the current Swan programme from 48 to 80 feet are now equipped with them. In addition, the modern, efficient T-keels with lead bulb have become standard within the range. In the case of the new 55, these are offered in three draught variants with 2.50 metres or alternatively with 2.10 or 3.40 metres, of course with corresponding adjustments to the ballast quantity. And Nautor also offers the boat with a hydraulic telescopic keel, also with a torpedo bomb. However, if you want the keel with variable draught, you will have to pay a mid-six-figure price. None of the 15 previous owners have realised this yet.

Over 2 million euros - without sail

The test boat is build number one, which cruises the Mediterranean under the name "Alegher", with the deep performance keel and a three-saling carbon fibre rig. Initially intended as standard, the aluminium mast is no longer specified for the basic equipment and is therefore no longer available.

From the shipyard, the Swan 55 will now be fitted with a carbon rig (mast and main boom) from French manufacturer Axxon Composites. The shipyard has also had to increase the basic price by more than 200,000 euros to achieve this. The price tag now stands at 2.05 million euros, still excluding VAT and sails, which is quite common for ships of this calibre.

Genoa or self-tacking jib - Both are possible on the Swan 55

The sail plan provides for the yacht to be operated either with an overlapping genoa and hoisting points on the side of the cabin superstructure or with a self-tacking jib. The fittings and rails are already fitted by the shipyard as standard for both variants. For long blue water passages, it is also possible to run an additional stay jib over the self-tacking rail while the larger genoa remains furled at the front.

Code Zero or Reacher can be attached to the bowsprit as a third headsail and remain furled, as is common on many modern ocean racing yachts today. All lines, halyards, sheets and trim lines are routed in channels below deck back into the cockpit to the side of the coamings. The layout leaves plenty of space between the stopper batteries and the two powerful sheet winches, which are arranged in a row one behind the other and spaced apart. This is an advantage for handling because all lines on each side can be operated from either winch.

The arrangement is at best disadvantageous for the helmsman, who can only reach the rear winch reasonably well from his position behind the wheel. This means that the crew must cooperate in the manoeuvres. The four large 70 mm winches (Harken Performa), which are all electrically operated as standard and can also be optionally activated by the helmsman at the push of a button directly on the steering columns, help with this.

The Swan 55 runs at enormous heights

Unfortunately, there is only a very short time window with reasonably favourable conditions available for the test run with the YACHT off Scarlino in Tuscany. With winds between 12 and 15 knots, the Swan 55 cruises at a speed of 7.6 knots. What is surprising is the good height that the boat can travel. The turning angles are only around 75 degrees, which fits into the performance range of real racing yachts. The windward speed (VMG), i.e. the theoretical speed that the boat can achieve against the wind, is calculated at over 6 knots. This is not only crucial for success on the race course, but is also advantageous for touring sailing.

Little feedback from the rudder

The helmsman has an easy job of it. The yacht, which weighs over 22 tonnes, reacts very directly and extremely lively to the rudder deflections and can therefore be steered optimally along the wind edge in a controlled manner. However, very little rudder pressure can be felt. Ambitious helmsmen may find the lack of feedback rather unpleasant, but this is normal for boats with double rudder blades.

The steering system, which is easily accessible through the aft peak, comes from Jefa and works via two separate chain hoists on the quadrants of the rudder shafts. These are in turn connected to each other with a trimmable push rod so that the angle of attack of the rudder blades can be easily adjusted. The elaborately installed, high-quality steering system is fully redundant. In addition, the autopilot directly accesses one of the quadrants, which provides additional safety in the event of a fault. An emergency tiller on board is therefore obsolete.

Unique bathing platform

The Swan 55's bathing platform is spectacular and unique on the market. The hatch not only opens the stern, but also the rear part of the aft deck. When extended and folded out using an elaborate mimic, a kind of lounge area unfolds, which can also be used as a sun lounger directly above the water with additional cushions.

The idea apparently came from shipyard owner Leonardo Ferragamo. However, the XXL bathing platform is only one option. The conventional stern platform with electro-hydraulic drives for folding out is standard. Thanks to the double rudder blades, an inflated inflatable dinghy measuring 2.5 metres in length, including motor, can be stowed transversely in the stern storage space.

The Swan 55 shines on the inside

The quality of Nautor Swan's interior fittings is legendary, and not just among industry experts. In addition to first-class craftsmanship in all areas, it is above all the countless small details that inspire. For example, the on-board installations (water supply, electrics, ventilation) are real treats for every technology fan and can redefine standards - even in the upper luxury class.

The fittings on the doors, storage compartments and in the wet rooms have also been selected to be better and of a higher quality than on many other ships. And the upholstery on the seats is ergonomically designed for optimum comfort with different foam thicknesses. These are just a few examples of the exceptionally exclusive nature of the interior fittings and the great effort that the shipyard has put into them. What's more, all berths are of course equipped with leeboards, the storage compartments are maximally well ventilated and, where possible, very easily accessible as drawers. In addition, softwood plugs are provided for safety in the event of water ingress.

Configure the interior fittings yourself

As is customary with Nautor Swan, the customer can configure the interior layout themselves within the range of options. For example, the aft living area on the port side can be converted into a skipper's cabin with its own toilet and separate access from the cockpit, a workshop or simply a walk-in storage space, depending on the owner's wishes.

Variance is also offered in the foredeck. Because the rig on the Swan 55 and therefore the main bulkhead are further aft in the boat, the shipyard is planning a second cabin for guests in addition to and behind the spacious master double cabin in the foredeck. This corresponds to the fit-out standard and is an exclusive feature within the length class.

This cabin can also be used in different ways, for example as an office or as a TV room, and it can be spatially and functionally linked to the owner's cabin if desired.

Nautor offers a total of over a hundred different customisation options for the Swan 55. So there are virtually no limits to individuality. Of course, good things don't come for free. The base price of just under 2.5 million euros gross for a ship with a hull length of 16.60 metres is a clear statement, or rather an acknowledgement by the shipyard of the fact that the new Swan 55 has hardly any comparable competition to fear in its market segment.

The Swan 55 is another German Frers design

Nautor premiered its Swan 55 at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, a year after debuting the Swan 58 at the same show and following other models launched in recent years including the Swan 48 (2019), Swan 65 (2019) and Swan 78 (2018).

The Swan 55 fits between the 48 and 58

Sparkman & Stephens designed the first Swan 55 (1970), which led to a Swan 57 (1977) and a series of Frers designs, from the Swan 53 to the Swan 56 (1997), Swan 53 (2005) and now the new Swan 55, which has a 54ft 6in hull, an overall length of 58ft 2in and a beam of 16ft 5in.

The fold-out swim platform

This latest iteration of the Swan 55 represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of tools available today to study the behaviour of the canoe body in all sailing conditions,” Frers said.

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

Two ‘transformer’ tables

“These are hulls with a powerful back end that attain maximum sailing length and low resistance while heeled thus the lowest possible displacement/length ratio and they provide excellent balance through the range of heel angles in combination with the well proven twin rudder set-up.”

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

The tables combine for dining

Frers says the yacht is easy to handle and cruise in its standard version and race in its performance set-up, which includes a square-top mainsail and bowsprit for the light weather and downwind sails.

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

New features include two ‘transformer’ tables in the wide cockpit and an extra-long swim platform. Shorthanded cruising benefits from five electric winches positioned to allow a single crew member to handle the boat alone. Ahead of the mast, a wide sunbathing area integrated into the coachroof offers a self-tacking track, designed for the staysail but also suitable for the jib.

Swan 55, German Frers, Cannes Yachting Festival, Misa Poggi,

The galley is to port of the stairs

The interiors include three double cabins and two or three bathrooms. The saloon has a C-shaped sofa with a central table to port and there are three different layout options for the starboard area including the chart table. The galley is to port of the stairs.

Golden Galiana: the Swan 55 preparing to race around the world

  • Katy Stickland
  • December 12, 2022

Katy Stickland sails the Swan 55 Galiana in Helsinki and meets the Finnish crew and her skipper, as the boat is prepared for the 2023 Ocean Globe Race

Galiana romps along like a thoroughbred racehorse, her new white hull gleams under the Baltic sunshine as she cuts through the waves cleanly, leaving foaming sea in her wake on our voyage from Kajholmen island back to her home port in Helsinki.

This most classic of Swans is almost spiritual to sail; you are almost overwhelmed by her beauty and performance, especially upwind.

If you were not converted to Swans before, you certainly are after a few hours of sailing in the Gulf of Finland.

Designed by the pen of Olin Stephens, the Swan 55 was first launched in 1969. Galiana was built in 1970.

Initially called Barbarossa , and sporting a red hull, she sailed for two seasons in the UK before being sold.

Her name changed to Asia, and then Golden Aura before the yacht ended up in the United States of America; 23 years ago British sailor Patrick Green bought her and returned her to the UK, where she was renamed Galiana and used for chartering and racing alongside her sistership, Valhalla .

Galiana was up for sale just as Finnish skipper Tapio Lehtinen was coming to the end of his 2018 Golden Globe Race .

After 322 days alone at sea, he was already thinking about what to do next.

Race chairman Don McIntyre told him about the Ocean Globe Race , a retro Whitbread Round the World race that he was planning for 2023, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread.

Would he be interested in leading a crew in the Adventure Class? If so, there was a Swan 55 for sale.

‘I didn’t need to look at any other alternatives. I have been dreaming of a Swan 55 yawl since my teenage years. I’ve always been a big Olin Stephens fan and this 55 is the classiest and most beautiful Swan Nautor’s has ever built,’ explains the 64-year-old lifelong sailor, who sailed the yacht back to Finland in the autumn of 2019.

Gorgeous Galiana

Galiana is certainly a head turner. Her blue hull is now white with a golden stripe, her deck has been recaulked and sanded and the king plank, toe rails and hatch coamings have been varnished. The chrome sparkles, polished to perfection.

‘It’s the combination of aesthetics, seaworthiness and speed. Swedish boat designer Olle Enderlein worked at Stephens’ office in his younger years in the 50s. He is quoted as saying: “Beautiful boats sail well’, and I think he learnt the philosophy from Olin Stephens. I totally agree,’ said Lehtinen.

The Swan 55 is firmly from the golden age of yachting and owes more than a passing nod to the International 6 Metre class, Finland’s most popular classic racing yacht.

The original lines of the first of Stephens’ yawls came from Dorade , his breakthrough boat in 1929 which won the 1931 Transatlantic Race and started an era where Stephens’ yawls did very well racing under the Cruising Club of America (CCA) and Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) rules on both sides of the Atlantic .

‘ Dorade is actually a scaled up International 6 Metre, and Olin and Rod Stephens learnt to sail onboard an International 6 Metre on Long Island Sound in the 1920s. Dorade was his design number six and among the five first ones, there were two or three 6 Metres already, so he understood the idea of the International boats which are narrow and sleek and go very well upwind. He made that his philosophy for offshore sailing boats which revolutionised the design of offshore sailing boats in the 1930s,’ explained Lehtinen, who sailed the 1936 Tore Holm 6 Metre, May Be IV for 35 years; she is now for sale to fund his racing ambitions.

A new generation

Much of the hard work to refit Galiana is being done by her Ocean Globe Race team; it is not unknown for them to work into the early hours of the morning during the summer, making most of the light to get projects completed on time, although you will never hear any complaints.

Unlike other race entries which are selling berths on legs, Lehtinen decided to put together a team of young Finnish sailors.

Out of 105 applications, 55 sailors were initially chosen. After a season of sailing in the Gulf of Finland, this was whittled down to 18 sailors and then just 10; their average age is 24.

Lehtinen will also circumnavigate with offshore sailor and youth sailing proponent Pia Grönblom, 49, who is also a certified nurse, and experienced seaman and Six Metre sailor Ville Norra, 50, Galiana ’s first mate.

The team spent a week in Lapland in March to prepare for the rigours of the Southern Ocean , skiing during the day to a new location and sleeping under canvas at night. There are also regular gym sessions, as well as sailing.

Viivi Moisio,19, is one of three women on the team, and is the second youngest member.

‘When I started on Galiana I didn’t have much experience of big boats because I started sailing on Optimists, so I’ve learned a lot. We came back a stronger team after Lapland, and being immersed in nature. I feel more prepared for what lies ahead,’ she said.

Mauri De Meulder, 25, is studying environmental economics at Helsinki University, and was one of the first to apply for a place on Galiana’ s team.

‘The best part is the team spirit we have. I love sailing of course, whether I do it solo or with others, but it is always special when you have a good team with you,’ he said.

For Lehtinen, the most important criteria for crew selection was ‘attitude, attitude and attitude’.

A man in a white tshirt showing off a trophy of a globe to some children

Only two members of the team have ‘strong racing DNA’, while the others come from Optimist, Sea Scout or other sailing backgrounds.

‘I am a fan of Churchill, who is famous for advising young soldiers on their way to the Front to ‘Never give up, Never give up. Never give up’. I think that’s the most important thing, but it is also important to be social. The Three Musketeers’ principle, ‘One for all, and all for one’ is very central. You have to be loyal and you have to help others to succeed. You need to be a team player,’ he said.

Lehtinen was just 23 and a student when he earned a place as watch captain on the 1981-82 Whitbread boat, Skopbank Finland, a C&C Baltic 51 skippered by Kenneth Gahmberg.

‘The Gahmberg family gave the possibility for a group of young sailors to get into ocean racing and I think now it’s my turn to return the favour to the next generation, and give back to the sport,’ he said. He hopes some of the young crew on Galiana will also do the same in the future.

Fit for fight

While Lehtinen has actively been part of the team’s training, he also allows them to take the initiative.

‘I think the best way to train is to let them sail by themselves, and I only interfere when I feel that it’s needed. They are smart people who are actively developing the way that we sail the boat,’ he said.

Further work on the Swan 55 will include fitting new, stronger masts to make the ‘rig bullet proof’ in a knockdown , the finish of an interior refit designed for Southern Ocean conditions, and a new durable wardrobe of WB Sails.

Under race rules, teams sailing a ketch or yawl are allowed only 13 sails which can’t be changed during stopovers, part of the organisers efforts to make the race as sustainable as possible.

Galiana will sail with three furling headsails in front of the mast and then a fully battened main and mizzen sail.

Lehtinen has already sailed around the world nonstop on his 2018 Golden Globe yacht, the Benello Gaia 36, Asteria. The boat had a fully battened mainsail. He opted to have the same on Galiana due to ‘the durability of these types of sails.’

‘We are having three furling headsails partly for safety, but it’s also to shift gears more easily when the conditions change. Instead of needing to change from one genoa to another, we will just play with the furlers so we won’t be losing time, but we also minimise the risk of losing people, because most of the people who have been lost over the side have been lost from front of the mast changing headsails,’ noted Lehtinen.

Two boats sailing side by side - one of them Galiana

During the 2018 Golden Globe Race, Lehtinen couldn’t help noticing how the amount of sealife has diminished during the four decades after his first circumnavigation in the 1981 Whitbread race.

‘There are lot less birds, whales and sea mammals to be seen,’ he noted. This has been caused by fish stocks crashing due to over fishing and the acidification of the seas as a result of climate change ; scientists believe there are 40% fewer fish in the oceans today than there were in the 1980s.

Consequently, Lehtinen has decided to team up with companies which are part of the solution in the transition towards a carbon neutral circular economy.

“I fully understand the rage of the young asking our generation why we haven’t acted in time. I see my role as increasing awareness of the solutions. If companies, regardless of their field, are innovative and take responsibility for sustainability, we can tackle the challenges. Another of my favourite UK Prime Ministers of mine was Maggie Thatcher, who used to say: “If there is a will, there is a way!”.

Lehtinen’s main Golden Globe Race sponsor is 3stepIT, which provides life circle IT hardware for companies, putting sustainability into practice.

‘We need and we can take action to save the planet and hand it over to next generations in such a condition that also they can enjoy of sailing and of the oceans,’ said Lehtinen.

He hopes his team will bond with Galiana as much as he has.

‘I feel very familiar sailing Asteria and Galiana , they feel like 6 Metre boats and it is almost a physical enjoyment to feel Galiana move and to steer her through the waves; I feel part of the boat.’

Team Tapio Lehtinen Sailing may not have the fastest boat in the Ocean Globe Race’s Adventure class, but with a team this committed and eager, their progress will be compulsive following when the race starts in September 2023.

The history of Swan Maxis begins early on, a few years after the establishment of Nautor. An expert client asked for a 17m Sparkman & Stephens. It was the year 1970, and the magnificent Swan 55 took shape. At the time, it was one of the largest yachts in the world to be produced in series and in fiberglass.

The Swan Maxi, from 88 to 128 feet, offers the highest expression of seaworthiness in any conditions combined with elegance, comfort, performance, style and modernity. The world class designers behind these beautiful yachts are maestro Germàn Frers with Misa Poggi on the interiors, while from the launch of the latest projects, Lucio Micheletti’s pen joins the team for the exterior design.

This Day in Aviation

Important dates in aviation history, 17 july 1975.

At 12:20 UTC, 15 July 1975, Soyuz 19 launched from Gagarin’s Start at Baikonur Cosmosdrome, Kazakh SSR with Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov, both on their second space flights. The launch vehicle was a Soyuz-U three-stage rocket.

At 19:50 UTC, 15 July 1975, Apollo ASTP lifted off from Launch Complex 39A, Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The crew was Thomas P. Stafford on his fourth space flight, Vance D. Brand on his first, and Donald K. “Deke” Slayton also on his first. The launch vehicle was a Saturn IB.

At 16:19:09 UTC, 17 July 1975, the two orbiting spacecraft rendezvoused in orbit and docked. Using a Docking Module airlock, the two crews each opened their spacecraft hatches and shook hands. The two ships remained joined for 44 hours, separating once for the Soyuz crew to take its turn to maneuver for docking with the Apollo Command and Service Module.

The Apollo command module from the mission is on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. The descent module of Soyuz 19 is on display at the RKK Energiya museum in Korolyov, Moscow Oblast, Russia.

This was the final flight of the Apollo spacecraft.
