Three crew investigated over Bayesian yacht sinking

Italian authorities are expanding their investigation into the deaths of seven people on the yacht, the Bayesian, to include two crew members as well as the captain, according to Italian news agencies.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and six others lost their lives when the 56m (184ft) yacht, flying a British flag, sank off the coast of northern Sicily on 19 August.

The investigation is now said to include ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith.

Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step.

The boat went down within minutes during a pre-dawn storm while the yacht was anchored off the northern coast of Sicily.

On Monday, the yacht's 51-year-old captain, New Zealand national James Cutfield, was reportedly placed under investigation for manslaughter and causing the shipwreck.

During questioning on Tuesday, he declined to answer the prosecutors' inquiries.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, one of the captain's lawyers, Giovanni Rizzuti, said: “The captain exercised his right to remain silent for two fundamental reasons. First, he's very worn out. Second, we were appointed only on Monday and for a thorough and correct defence case, we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment, we don't have.”

Tim Parker Eaton is understood to have been in charge of adequately securing the yacht's engine room and operational systems, while Matthew Griffith was on watch duty during the night of the disaster.

The sinking has left naval experts baffled, as they believe a yacht of Bayesian's calibre, constructed by the prestigious Italian yacht builder Perini, should have been able to withstand the storm and certainly should not have sunk as rapidly as it did.

Prosecutors based in Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have indicated that their investigation will be lengthy and will require the salvage of the wreckage.

The head of the company that built the Bayesian, Giovanni Costantino, told the BBC he was convinced there had been a litany of errors on board.

“At the back of the boat, a hatch must have been left open,” he said, “but also perhaps a side entrance for water to have poured inside.

"Before the storm, the captain should have closed every opening, lifted anchor, turned on the engine, pointed into the wind and lowered the keel."

The keel is a large, fin-like part of the boat that protrudes from its base.

"That would have stabilised the vessel, they would have been able to traverse the storm and continue their cruise in comfort," he said.

Currently, the Bayesian rests on its right side at a depth of approximately 50m (164ft).

Meanwhile, the Italian Coast Guard has been conducting environmental monitoring activities at the site of the sinking, to prevent possible hydrocarbon spills from the hull.

At the moment, the are no leaks from the tanks and no traces of oil pollution, the Coast Guard said in a statement on Wednesday.

MAIN DECK The cockpit boasts a large outdoor table, a long sofa aft and three sophisticated Seax chairs by Dedon with armrests finished in wood. The structural sofas and sun pads on the exteriors are all covered with Mambo Pearl Light technical fabric in silver and platinum hues, which tastefully complement the metallic tones and the teak flooring.The interiors on the main deck perfectly express the unmistakable Riva style and are the result of a joint effort among Officina Italiana Design, the Product Strategy Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. Striped walnut wood appears alongside polished stainless steel frames, matte enamel accents in white and Seal Brown, and generous expanses of dark brown leather cover the ceilings, bulwarks and some items of furniture, such as the custom-made coffee table in the lounge. Overlooking the latter is an L-shaped Andersen sofa in ecru by Minotti, adorned with dulce-coloured Hermès cashmere cushions. The two Brooklyn chairs by Poltrona Frau are in a scarlet hue. A splendid Flos table lamp rounds out the interior design, while the curtains covering the side windows and large glass aft door are by Zimmer & Rohde.A refined touch in the formal dining area is the magnificent Calacatta marble flooring, on top of which stands a large Acerbis International table with a glass top, surrounded by eight Fitzgerald chairs by Poltrona Frau in an attractive shade of cream. In the forward area, a generous storage cabinet in solid wood is set into the leather-lined wall.Beyond the lounge, a large starboard galley with dinette leads to the crew quarters. It is equipped with Miele appliances, as well as a Teppanyaki cooktop, a wine fridge and a GE side-by-side refrigerator.Access to the guest accommodation is from the portside lobby, which also features a day head with floors, washbasin and fittings crafted in Calacatta marble, dark enamel and wood.The wide-body owner’s suite occupies the entire forward area and is finished in the same select materials as in the lounge: striped walnut wood, dark brown leather, white lacquer and polished stainless steel. A stylish red leather Hermès chair is placed next to a vanity unit, which opens up to reveal a mirror and storage compartments.Adorning the central double bed are pillows, bedspread and coverlet by Ivano Redaelli, and a dulce-coloured Hermès cashmere cushion. The bed faces a mirrored wall with a TV screen. To port, two steps lead down to the full-beam bathroom dominated by a central double sink in Magic Brown marble and a large mirror set in a polished stainless steel frame. The same marble is used for the floors, including the separate shower cubicle. The taps are by Elka and other bathroom accessories are by Pomd’Or.

The same decorative approach is found in the guest bathrooms, except that Amani Brown marble replaces the Magic Brown marble.

HELM STATION A majestic, raised helm station opens up onto a broad view forward and to the sides. Steering and navigation systems are placed opposite the captain's ergonomic seat upholstered in black leather, behind which is a large dinette finished in leather in a beautiful shade of cognac for enjoying the cruising experience in luxurious comfort.

LOWER DECK At the entrance to the main area below deck is a large lobby with a mirrored wall and ample storage compartments, which opens up onto the four guest cabins: two VIP cabins aft, a double cabin forward on the port side, and a twin cabin to starboard.The décor echoes that of the main deck with an elegant interplay of tones, textures and materials that includes several types of wood, surfaces in white enamel, polished stainless steel frames and trim, and plentiful dark brown leather. The beds are positioned opposite mirrored walls, into which a TV screen has been set.The careful attention paid to even the smallest details is evidenced by the decision to conceal several practical features: the top of the night tables, for example, slides forward to open and reveals a storage compartment with electrical outlets. The reading lamps from BCM boast a frame upholstered with leather.The soft furnishings are equally sophisticated: a saddle-shaped leather Hermès ottoman with a concealed storage compartment provides a place to sit in front of the vanity unit. An Ivano Redaelli bedspread and pillows add a decorative touch.

FLYBRIDGE A hard top protects the central part of the panoramic deck, which features a dining area on the port side. The table is surrounded by an L-shaped built-in sofa and 3 Seax outdoor chairs by Dedon with wooden armrests.On the starboard side, a cocktail bar in teak is set into a polished stainless steel frame, where drinks are served to guests seated on two stools in teak and polished stainless steel.All the furniture in the panoramic cockpit is free-standing and designed by Paola Lenti, including two Sand lounge chairs and two Orlando sofas with moveable backrests, positioned in an L-shape, are complemented by six decorative cushions and three Strap aluminium exterior side tables. The latter feature a distinctive central handle made of rope, so they can be moved more easily. The finishing touches are added by silver and aquamarine Agadir floor and table lanterns.

OUTSIDE FORWARD AREA The entire panoramic cockpit on the flybridge is protected, as is the forward lounge, by broad curtains in anthracite grey, supported by a carbon fibre frame. The private area in the deckhouse is furnished with a large central sunpad and boasts a C-shaped sofa and a custom-made ottoman, which also serves as a low-boy table with a teak tray for serving delicious aperitifs in absolute privacy.

Three Graces is a beautifully restored Coronado 45 in turn-key condition.  She has sailed the U.S. East Coast, Caribbean, Florida Keys and Florida West Coast extensively and has been maintained by a professional captain and licensed mechanic.  She offers a 2 stateroom layout with numerous updates, yet her classic interior has been beautifully maintained.  If you are looking for a classic bluewater sailboat, you should definitely inspect Three Graces.  Price reduced!

45' Coronado Vessel Walkthrough

Entering the interior from the cockpit, you will find a navigation station and storage to port, master stateroom starboard aft, engine compartment and then galley to starboard, wrap-around settee with custom teak table that converts to a double berth starboard forward and a built-in benchseat to port.  Walking forward, you will find the head and shower to starboard and the guest stateroom forward. 

45' Coronado Accommodations

The master stateroom is starboard aft and offers a double berth, while the guest stateroom is forward and offers a v-berth.  The head and shower are located starboard forward.  The salon wrap-around settee converts into a double berth and there is a single benchseat/berth in the salon to port.

The salon offers a wrap-around settee and custom teak table with inlaid compass rose that converts into a double berth to starboard, a benchseat/berth to port, 5 portlights and overhead hatches.  Cushions were new in 2010.  There is a spectacular butterfly hatch with etched glass that will catch your attention both on deck and in the salon.

Though many of us associate Superyachts with Russian and Middle Eastern owners, it is actually a reported fact that Britain own the second largest share of the world’s Superyachts… We’ve put together a list of just some of the Superyachts owned by Britians elite, along with their owners.

1. The Hinduja family and Param Jamuna IV

Prakash Hinduja is one of the richest people in the world. Together with his brothers, he owns the Hinduja Group and has a net worth of $16.2 billion! Th e Hinduja family business gained it’s elite status through banking, telecom, energy, media and technologies. Param Jamuna IV is the name of one of their rumoured Superyachts. She’s a 48.31m motor yacht and was custom built in 2013 by Rossinavi in Viareggio, Italy. Her beautiful interior and exterior design were forefronted by Team 4 Design.

2. Kirsty & Ernesto Bertarelliand Vava II

These two are probably the UK’s power couple in when it comes to Superyachts owned by Britians elite. They have a net worth of $16.9 billion. Former Miss UK and songwriter Kirsty Bertarelli and Biotech tycoon turned Capital giant Ernesto Bertarelli are the proud owners of the 97m Superyacht Vava II.  It’s rumored to cost £250,000 to just fill the tanks of this beast!

3. Philip Green and Lionheart

Now, Sir Philip Green is the owner of the £100 million, 90m Benetti Superyacht named ‘Lionheart’. Despite his other yachts being available for charter, Lionhart remains off of the market.

4. Leonard Blavatnik and Odessa II

Despite his Russian/American origin, Blatnavik now resides in London. And with an estimated net worth of $18.5 billion, he is one of the city’s wealthiest elite residents. He is also an active philanthropist through his Blavatnik Family Foundation. Leonard Baltnavik is the owner of the Nobiskrug 37.8m Odessa II.

5. James “Jim” Ratcliffe and Hampshire II

Ratcliffe has made his living in the chemical industry and now boasts a net worth of $5.5 billion. Not only does he own the 78.5m Hampshire II, he also previously owned a 56m Feadship motor yacht, by the same name.

8. James Dyson and Nahlin

We all know how James Dyson made his fortune. But, just in case you don’t, let us tell you that if you’ve ever used a Dyson vacuum, you have a lot to thank him for! His 91m Superyacht Nahlin is a real thing of class. This is one of the largest classic yachts in the world.

9. The Barclay Brothers and Lady Beatrice

Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay are twin brothers who are most famous for owning the Telegraph Media Group. They also own stakes in the London Ritz hotel, and the beautiful 60m custom motor yacht, Superyacht Lady Beatrice – Which was named after their mother.

10. Charles Dunstone and Shemara

Last, but most certainly not least, we have Sir Charles Dunston and his Superyacht Shemara. The businessman is worth $2.1 billion, and his yacht has a kind of legendary history. It was rescued from turning into a rotting mess by Dunstone about five years ago and brought back to its former glory. Talking about its glory days, this yacht was notorious for holding some of the most scandalous political parties of the early 20th century.

I imagine you’re rolling your eyes at my color scheme for the ladies: three primaries for the three Graces. How obvious. However, that’s really how they were dressed. Well, the girl in the center was wearing more white than yellow, but I couldn’t resist.

Meet Grace, the timeless beauty that has captured the hearts of travelers since the 1950s. Grace is the epitome of youth and glamor, having lived a gallant life that includes serving as a submarine chaser during World War II and sophisticated host to Aristotle Onassis, John Issa, and Sir Winston Churchill.

Don't be fooled by her age—the completely renovated Grace is as young and chic as the princess who honeymooned aboard. Her elegance and refinement are unmatched, and her parties are legendary. Come experience the magic for yourself, as Grace takes you on a journey through the wonders of the Galapagos.

Once known as Monica and later as Rion, the M/Y Grace has a fascinating history. Commissioned by Argentinean Santiago Soulas, she originally weighed 298 tons and was 147 feet long with a 23-foot beam and a 12-foot draft.

Once enjoyed by Sir George Tilley in the late 1930s, she was conscripted by the British for the war effort in 1939. Stripped of her furnishings and paneling, she was used by the Royal Navy for coastal patrols during the War Years.

Grace played an important role during WWII as she patrolled the calm waters off the Isle of Wight. Later, she was dispatched to the beaches of Dunkirk for the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force during Operation Dynamo.

In a daring night operation, Rion and two other ships captured a German E-boat off the Isle of Wight. After engaging in a firefight, Rion delivered the final blow, securing the enemy vessel and escorting it to Portsmouth Harbour naval base.

Her heroics continued as she hunted a submarine on the night of March 23, 1941, making multiple depth charge runs. Refitted as a floating annex to the Royal Navy Hospital, she served until the end of the war, earning a new name, HMS Noir.

After being decommissioned in 1945, she was restored to her luxurious beginnings by her original builders, Camper & Nicholsons. She was then returned to Sir George Tilley on September 16, 1947, remaining with him until his death in 1951.

HMS Noir became the glamorous Arion under Aristotle Onassis' charter firm, hosting a stream of A-list celebrities and even welcoming Sir Winston Churchill aboard during her three-year reign as the queen of the seas.

Aristotle Onassis gave a royal gift to Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly: the luxurious yacht Arion. The prince spent weeks refurbishing the vessel, which would later welcome the Hollywood star to her new home in Monaco.

After the wedding, the royal couple began their honeymoon with a short stay in Mallorca, Spain, followed by a cruise aboard the yacht—which they christened Deo Juvente II—along the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia.

After being gifted to Monaco's royal couple, the yacht changed hands and was renamed Daska before becoming a popular charter in the Bahamas under Crest Shipping in the 1960s. She’s no stranger to crystalline waters.

Newly-named Angela continued her journey under the ownership of Valef Yachts in the Caribbean. After a heroic evacuation effort in the Lebanese Civil War and a stunning refurbishment, she remained a beloved luxury charter until 1982.

With a new identity as the M/Y Zein, named after one of John Issa’s daughters, she cruised along the East Coast. Zein remained a sought-after vessel, catching the attention of buyers such as Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft.

The M/Y Zein became the M/Y Grace in 2007, as Quasar Expeditions took her back to her most elegant times. With a complete refit and recent renovation, she continues to make headlines as the most elegant ship to cruise the Galapagos Islands.

In 2012, Galapagos National Park began requiring all cruise organizations to wait two weeks before visiting the same landing site. A complimentary Wi-Fi package is available for all Quasar Guests who travel aboard Grace Yacht.

This complimentary package limits the use of Wi-Fi & Internet Service to specific areas of the yacht and under a fixed schedule each day. There are also plans available for purchase that make Wi-Fi available 24 hours a day and offer higher download and upload speeds. Please inquire with our Galapagos Expedition Designers for details.

Important Notes : Internet connectivity in the Galapagos maybe intermittent at times during our itineraries mainly due to satellite coverage and climate issues, which affect all Galapagos vessels. Continuous connectivity to communication applications such as Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, Google Meetings or others are affected by satellite coverage, climate, and network saturation.
