A Florida Billionaire Lent His Yacht to Rescue 50 Dogs and Bring 30 Tons of Supplies to the Bahamas
A Florida billionaire and philanthropist donated use of his yacht to bring 30 tons of supplies to the Bahamas last week and rescue several dogs after Hurricane Dorian devastated the islands, according to reports.
Tom Golisano made his vessel Laurel available to emergency initiatives as part of a program organized by YachtAid Global—a non-profit which facilitates the use of luxury yachts for disaster relief efforts.
Laurel was used to transport water, food and sanitation kits from the Bahamian capital Nassau to Freeport on Grand Bahama—one of the islands that was hardest hit by the catastrophic Category 5 storm—on September 6, 7 and 8, the Naples Daily News reported . The yacht was also used to evacuate 50 dogs from the islands.
"I was very pleased to be able to assist in this global humanitarian effort to help the people and some of the dogs impacted by Hurricane Dorian," Golisano said.
"Laurel and our incredible crew led by Captain Roy Hodges all did an amazing job bringing essential supplies to the Bahamas and rescuing about 50 dogs who were left homeless when the shelter in which they lived was destroyed. I am very proud of all their hard work. We will all keep the people of the Bahamas in our prayers," he said.
Golisano, 77—who is estimated to have a net worth of around $3.1 billion as of 2018, according to Forbes—was the founder of payroll and human resources company Paychex, which he set up in 1971.
The billionaire is also owner of fiber-optic internet service service Greenlight Networks, which has its headquarters in Rochester, New York.
Golisano was a former owner of the Buffalo Sabres hockey team but he sold the team in 2011 for a price of $189 million, and he even ran three times for Governor of New York, although his campaigns were all unsuccessful.
Furthermore, the businessman is a founder of the Golisano Foundation which describes its mission as being "devoted exclusively to opening doors to opportunity, changing negative perceptions and stereotypes, and forging unprecedented partnerships to ensure individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have pathways to personal dignity, independence and the best possible expression of their abilities and talents throughout their lifetimes."
Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas as a Category 5 storm earlier this month with sustained maximum wind speeds of 185 miles per hour and gusts of up to 220 miles per hour—tying the record for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever to make landfall.
The storm hovered over the region for around 48 hours, moving very slowly, thus exacerbating the damage it caused. Last week, officials estimated that around 90 percent of the infrastructure on the Abacos is damaged or destroyed, while around 15,000 are still in need of food and shelter, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
The current death toll on the islands currently stands at 50 people, however, this figure is expected to rise significantly given that 1,300 people are still listed as missing, according to the Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency.

Golisano, who founded payroll firm Paychex, has landed on Forbes' list of billionaires numerous times, including last year .
A former New York resident, he sold the Buffalo Sabres hockey team in March 2011 for $189 million, rejecting a higher bid to keep the team from moving out of the city.
He founded the Golisano Foundation in 1985 with an initial gift of $90,000. Golisano's yacht used to transport dogs and relief supplies in the Bahamas
A yacht belonging to area philanthropist and Paychex founder Tom Golisano has helped provide humanitarian relief to the hurricane-stricken Bahamas.
Golisano’s yacht was used to move about 60 dogs off of some islands in the Bahamas to the mainland and also to transport 30 tons of supplies including water, food and sanitation kits from Nassau to Freeport.
Golisano says his yacht crew was approached by a relief organization asking for the help, and they were glad to provide it.
“They talked to our crew, and our crew said, ‘yeah, we’ll do that!' And they brought the dogs on board in crates and they did no damage to the boat at all; and then we also transported goods back to the islands.
Golisano’s yacht, named Laurel, is 240-feet long. It is based in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was in the Rochester area when the relief transport was done recently to help those affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian.
Yacht Industry Leaders Step Up To Provide Hurricane Relief Effort Work In The Bahamas

When category 5 Hurricane Dorian slammed into northernmost islands of the Bahamas, it devastated the area with nothing remaining in its wake except for total destruction.
According to the United Nations , at least 76,000 are now homeless and dozens of people have lost their lives because of the hurricane. The communities in the affected islands need our help. There is a lot to do, but luckily there is YachtAid Global leading relief efforts from the yachting industry.
YachtAid Global is a non-profit organisation that coordinates in conjunction with other non-profits to acquire then distribute humanitarian aid. Considering the severity of the loss experienced in the Bahamas, YachtAid Global has helped to mobilise multiple yachts filled with life-saving goods through Operation Topaz. They have helped to form a superyacht coalition, reducing the time it would have taken to organise and deliver aid to the islands.
The owner of the motor yacht Laurel , Tom Golisano, volunteered his yacht accompanied by his crew to deliver an incredible 30 tons worth of drinking water, non-perishable food, and medical supplies. When they returned to the United States from the Bahamas they brought with them 50 dogs that were rescued from the now destroyed animal shelter. The dogs then went into the care of Big Dog Ranch Rescue where they received medical care and could be adopted into loving homes. Through Laurel ’s Instagram account she was able to keep followers abreast of her efforts, and even gained hundreds of followers when their work went viral on social media platforms.
The superyacht Loon was also involved in relief efforts by transporting volunteers, medical teams, supplies, and pumped hundreds of gallons of converted drinking water to shore for distribution. In addition to bringing aid to the islands, they stayed for a week to clear debris from the roads, securing the dock so more boats could safely arrive, giving sweets to children to lift their spirits, distributing supplies to hard-to-reach islands with their tender, freeing the debris from a ship’s propeller so it can transport people to safety and repairing the generators at the airport so planes can arrive with more aid.
So many others were involved in Operation Topaz such as motor yachts Cynthia, Turquoise, Anna Marie, Perla, and Hospitality. It is fantastic to see so many leaders, captains, and crews within the yachting industry step-up and make a significant difference in the lives of those displaced or affected by Hurricane Dorian. Relief efforts are still ongoing, please consider donating money or supplies with the following organisations:
- YachtAid Global
- Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation
- World Central Kitchen
- National Association of the Bahamas

Tearful testimony on 2nd day of Golisano civil suit
Norma Goldman broke down in tears as she testified Tuesday about the end of a major redecorating project she did for Thomas Golisano.
The billionaire businessman had hired Goldman to work on his luxury yacht, and after six months of work, she presented a final bill indicating the total cost of the project had been roughly $850,000. Golisano had paid that amount with a series of checks during the course of the project.
But at this final meeting in May 2014, Goldman says Golisano balked at the total price. It was the first time he'd raised concerns about costs, she said, even though she had sent itemized invoices throughout the project.
Testimony continued Tuesday in Golisano's civil suit against Goldman and Vitoch Interiors, a local company from which she purchased most of the furnishings for the project. Goliano claims he had a verbal agreement with Goldman that she would bill him an hourly rate and sell him all of the goods at cost. Instead, his suit alleges, she sold him those items at a substantial markup, resulting in overcharges of more than $300,000.

More: Andreatta: Golisano's big boat beef goes to trial
Goldman denied making that arrangement with Golisano or any other client during her 40 years in the business.
"If we charge clients exactly what we paid for merchandise, we would not have a business," Goldman said in court
After that meeting at Golisano's offices, Goldman faxed him a letter expressing her anguish at being accused of overcharging. She grew emotional as she read passages from that letter to the jury.
"I take pride in my reputation and I've worked diligently over the years to be known for creating beautiful environments while being conscientious and caring. I want to continue on that path," she wrote. "I took this job with excitement and gratitude for the work and a desire to create something beautiful for a great ship and her owner."
Earlier, jurors examined a glossy color brochure that showed pictures of the Laurel, Golisano's 240-foot long luxury yacht. Goldman walked them through the work she'd done using the ship's blueprints, going deck-by-deck, room-by-room to detail the work she'd done. It included new carpeting and furniture, re-upholstery on some existing pieces, and even some original paintings, which Goldman had commissioned to hang throughout the ship.
On Monday, Golisano and his wife, tennis star Monica Seles, testified that Goldman told them she would sell them the goods at cost, with no markup.
But Golisano eventually learned that many of the items were billed to him at more than two times what she paid for them. During cross-examination, Golisano's attorney Glenn Pezzulo asked Goldman to explain a series of invoices that showed this markup in practice.
Goldman testified that she paid $11,825 for custom mattresses and charged Golisano $23,000. For carpeting in the ship's master suite, she was billed $29,231 and charged Golisano $53,598. Imported Italian linens used for re-upholstery cost Goldman $34,461 and she billed it at $56,029. And Golisano was billed $32,000 for the custom artwork, for which Goldman had paid $18,200.
Pezzulo also asked Goldman why she failed to provide a written contract detailing the terms of the project. Goldman responded that it had never been her practice.
The plaintiffs had hoped to call the Laurel's former captain, Mark Diekmann, to testify about the billing arrangements, since he had been present for some of those discussions.
However, Pezzulo told presiding Justice Matthew Rosenbaum that the captain's whereabouts were unknown.
"I believe he may be sailing another yacht to South East Asia," Pezzulo said. With his witness unavailable, he asked instead to read the transcript of Diekmann's deposition to the jury.
Justice Rosenbaum denied that motion.
Tuesday's session began with testimony from Arthur Vitoch, the owner of Vitoch Interiors. He testified that he sold many of the goods to Goldman for the yacht project, but never had any conversations with or business relationship with Golisano. While Goldman works from an office out of his showroom, Vitoch said she was an independent contractor, not an employee.
Golisano named both Mr. Vitoch and his business as defendants in his lawsuit, along with Goldman.
Two days of testimony concluded as both sides rested their respective cases Tuesday. Justice Rosenbaum told jurors they would hear summations Wednesday morning, then he would give them instructions and allow them to begin their deliberations.
Billionaire Thomas Golisano Sues Decorator Over $845K Palm Beach County-Based Yacht Bill
Published may 4, 2016 • updated on may 4, 2016 at 10:48 am.
Billionaire Thomas Golisano is suing his New York-based interior decorator, claiming she overcharged him hundreds of thousands of dollars for furnishings for his 240-foot Palm Beach County, Florida yacht. The Democrat and Chronicle reports that Golisano, founder of Rochester-based payroll processing firm Paychex Inc., has filed a civil lawsuit against Norma Goldman in state Supreme Court in Rochester. Golisano claims Goldman's $845,000 bill for work she did on the West Palm Beach-based Laurel was $400,000 too high. The furnishings reportedly included $7,692 on four chaise lounges and $2,252 for "dream cushions" to cover them, as well as a $3,338 ottoman that cost $600 to upholster. He says the decorator overcharged him by reneging on a verbal agreement to sell Golisano the furnishings at her wholesale price. Goldman denies promising that the furnishings wouldn't be marked up. The 74-year-old Golisano's main residence is in Florida. The former owner of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres also has a home in suburban Rochester.
Laurel, a 240-foot, custom-built "superyacht" sleeps 12 and has a crew of 22.
Interested customers can lease Laurel for roughly $605,000 per week.
