Tiara Yachts C 49

You hear it all the time these days: “F ollow your passion.” S2 Yachts founder Leon Slikkers did just that, long before it was popular advice.

The company arguably got its start when Slikkers decided to pursue his love of handcrafting boats and went to work for Chris Craft, famed maker of high-end power boats, in 1946. It wasn’t long before he wanted to do his own thing, starting with boat-building in his garage. He left to form SlickCraft in 1954, making dual-cockpit runabouts with mahogany plywood decks and molded plywood hulls. The boats were initially made in a small factory in Holland, Michigan, above which was the Slikkers family’s apartment.

Leon Slikkers and his wife Dolores put a SlickCraft to the test

Slikkers grew his line of high-quality, affordable wooden boats to 12 models, and even began experimenting with fiberglass hulls. In 1969 the company was purchased by AMF, with Slikkers staying on as President of the new division. Four years later, unhappy with AMF’s commitment to the business, Slikkers left.

Constrained by a non-compete agreement, but retaining his boat-building passion, Slikkers formed S2 Yachts in 1974 and began building 23- and 26-foot sailboats. These quickly gained popularity with cruisers and racers alike. Two years later, with the non-compete clause retired, the company launched the Tiara Yachts division, focusing on boat-building using only the finest materials and the highest level of workmanship. That business soon eclipsed the sailboats, which were discontinued in 1987.

The factory is still in Holland, Michigan, but it’s now a 500,000 square foot behemoth of a building where the company turns out about 150 yachts each year. The family no longer lives above the factory, but the company is a family affair: Leon’s son Tom – who’s been in the business for 36 years, since he was in the 8 th grade – took the helm as President and CEO in 2012, with Leon remaining as Chairman.

At the plant, manufacturing begins with the product development process, which culminates in a full-scale three-dimensional mock-up of each model to test all spaces for function and conversion. This, Tom Slikkers said, is where they “check the box,” to make sure all the pieces fit and move the way they’re supposed to. “We don’t want to end up with things ‘bolted together,’” he said. “We work hard to combine beauty and function. We want the best integrated solution delivered to the market.”

Once the mock-up represents a satisfactory design, the team moves on to materials selection. “This is all planned for, engineered, and designed the quality way,” said Tom Slikkers. “We’re very deliberate and intentional in our choice of materials, especially things like fasteners. You see the difference in ‘ugly water’ – our boats don’t rattle or have things fall off. And we focus on ease of use for different customers.”

The manufacturing process itself remains very manual, harkening back to the founding principle of handcrafting. One of Tiara’s key strengths is their vertical integration in production. They don’t just mold fiberglass hulls and then assemble components sourced from outside – they build all the major assemblies in-house, using modular construction to create different components to feed into an assembly line of yacht production. This gives them the ability to better serve their customers through quality and flexibility.

“Our Tiara Sport 34 LX bowrider redesign shows the advantage of how we manufacture,” Slikkers said. “We studied what people do with the boats and what they take along. That let us look at how best to use the space – where to keep and store things, organization, ease of use, and how to keep things clean. We were able to curate a line of branded accessories to offer customers more options on how they make use of the space on the boat.”

Whitney Vishey, Tiara’s Director of Marketing & Communications, agrees. “We recently launched our Tiara Sport brand, in August 2018,” she said. “The three models in that brand – the 38 LS, 34 LS, and 34 LX – show our continued growth as a company. And those accessories Tom referred to, a beach equipment and cleaning kit we put together for the newest model in that lineup, show how we are able to closely work with our Engineering and Manufacturing teams to provide items for purposeful storage, complementing what our customers need and want onboard.”

Tiara Sport deck set fabrication

There are parts of the boat where the company relies on external suppliers. In those cases they look for vendors with the same quality focus they have. They’ve built strong, longstanding partnerships with their engine manufacturers, for example. And they’ll pay more to get vendors to support their generous warranties, or even bridge “warranty gaps” for their customers.

The whole focus is on the high-end market. “We’re a premium product, and we’re steeped in quality,” said Slikkers. “That focus gives a better culmination in our final products.”

Joining the hull and deck set

A key challenge for the company is worker skills. “Walking through the plant, you won’t see a big difference in how the jobs look versus 15 or 20 years ago,” said Slikkers. “But we’ve had to reconfigure a lot of the hands-on jobs to accommodate people. We can’t assume today that our workers have had shop class, or have held a power tool before.”

While some components are foreign-built, Tiara remains committed to the U.S. “I don’t feel pressured to buy Chinese components,” Slikkers said. “I’m not scrapping for five cents, ten cents – I’m looking for the best outcome for our customers and our boats. We’re very competitive, but we don’t compromise on that.”

Tiara remains committed to being a family company as well. “That family history is rich,” Slikkers said. He has two nephews in the business, and a son who’s recently joined as well.

They’re equally committed to the Holland area. “Growing up in Holland, Tiara was a fixture in our community,” said Vishey. “It’s a great privilege to continue to build the brand locally, nationally, and internationally. I look forward to helping to continue the excitement and momentum of both the Tiara Yachts and the Tiara Sport brands.” Slikkers added, “This is who we are and what we focus on – we’re rooted and heavily invested in West Michigan. I love being here – I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

Where Are Tiara Yachts Built?

Which country builds the best yachts?

NORTHERN EUROPE. The Northern European countries are especially known for building fully custom and semi-custom motor and sailing yachts. The Netherlands and Germany top the yachting industry for delivering yachts over 50m with large volume and a high value. German builders Lürssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Nobiskrug deliver full-custom yacht projects, while Dutch builders like Amels/Damen Yachting, Heesen and Moonen build high-end semi-custom yachts based on model platforms. In the full custom category, Feadship, Oceanco and Royal Hakvoort specialize in the construction of full-custom motor yachts, while Royal Huisman delivers made-to-measure sailing yachts. Both custom and semi-custom yachts built in Northern Europe tend to keep a far higher resale value on the brokerage market. Thanks to their high-quality finish and extreme levels of customization, it’s fair to say that these yachts are akin to floating works of art.

Among Northern Europe’s production series yards, Sunseeker, Princess Yachts and Pearl Yachts offer motor yachts between 17m and 40m. These directly compete with Southern European yacht builders. Among the Mediterranean countries, Italy and Turkey are the two main producers for semi-custom and production series yachts up to 50m. Most Italian-built yachts are made from GRP and often form part of a branded series for yards, examples of which are Sanlorenzo, Custom Line, Ferretti, Benetti, Arcadia Yacht, Maiora, Falcon Yachts and Amer Yachts.

ITALY. When it comes to speed, Italian builders, such as AB Yachts, Tecnomar, Azimut, Mangusta, Leopard Yachts, Riva and Pershing, excel in planing and open vessels. But over the past decade, a flurry of new yacht builders has entered the market delivering lager yachts and more customizable options that rival heritage builders like Baglietto, Codecasa and ISA Yachts. Perini Navi remains one of the most exclusive sailing yacht builders offering performance and style, but when it comes to innovative design solutions, Columbus Yachts, Tankoa, Cantiere delle Marche and the revival of Admiral brought have risen through the pack.

Can yachts handle rough seas?

Bottom Line. Yachts can withstand severe weather conditions such as tropical storms and hurricanes. However, you should not test your luck by venturing out on the water during these incidents. Whenever feasible, it is always ideal to avoid any harsh weather in order to keep you, your yacht, and your crew safe from it. Usually, the best course of action is to sail away from the storm or to enter a safe harbor. Keep in mind that your safety should always be your number one priority!

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. Tiara’s New 54-Foot Yacht Has a Deck That Transforms Right in Front of You

The ex54 has a modular design that allows owners to reconfigure the yacht's back end for different purposes. we step on board., kevin koenig, kevin koenig's most recent stories.

Tiara EX54 Yacht

Tiara Yachts is a U.S. builder that values adventure as a key piece of its DNA. I’ve done trips on board a number of their boats that were focused on fishing and diving. Those models were built for fun—small and sporty with a wind-in-your-hair vibe.

Tiara EX54 Yacht

The next model down is the new EX54, which debuted at last month’s Miami show. With a length that is six feet smaller, this boat is just as creative with yacht-y accoutrements, along with attention to detail that cements Tiara’s next-generation ambitions. I had a chance to step aboard to see the similarities with the EX60.

The EX54’s’s cockpit will most likely lure many owners away from similar-sized competitors, thanks to its customizability. It comes in three setups that include a social version with two settees facing one another, an adventure configuration that loses the rear settee to make room for dive tanks and scuba gear, or a “glass-patio” design with modular ottomans.

Tiara XL54

The boat in Miami had the double settee which, coupled with mezzanine seating a few steps up and forward, gave this boat the feel of a larger motoryacht, in line with the trend of maximizing the exterior space that is currently in vogue in the superyacht world. The mezzanine seating featured a flip-down teak bar to port with a flip-up window with Australian undertones. I found it a bit odd that the bar was not adjacent to the amidships galley for easier service.

The EX54’s cabin featured two Tiara hallmarks: high-level woodwork and a focus on ergonomics. The teak across the main deck was richly grained, with snug joinery. Handholds were common as well, but discreetly embedded in structures like a dining table and a countertop so as not to dim the yacht’s aesthetic appeal.

Tiara X54 Bow Area

Other nods to onboard comfort can be found down in the full-beam master amidships that is remarkably roomy for a boat this size, a trait that extended to the head where the shower had 6-feet, 8-inches of headroom and enough shoulder space for just about anyone, short of NBA stature, to fit comfortably.

The boat is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS2 950s that is paired with a glass cockpit by Garmin. The joystick control gives the driver excellent slow-speed maneuverability and high-speed handling as well as low noise. In speed tests, the boat reached a top end of 38.7 mph, with a friendly cruise of 30.6 mph that delivered a 334-mile range.

In the end, what you’re getting is a yacht with Tiara’s trademark DNA for adventure and seaworthiness in a package that is decidedly more luxe. It’s a combination that that should be appealing, both to Tiara owners looking to move up, and to owners of foreign-built vessels that may soon come around to the rising tide of American build quality.

Boat Test: 2023 Tiara EX 60

  • By Capt. Chris Caswell
  • April 21, 2023

Tiara EX 60 offshore

Wanting to create a new flagship for its fleet, someone at Tiara obviously said, “Go big or go home.” And thus was born the largest and most luxurious Tiara ever built: an inboard IPS-powered yacht that, at 60 feet, 3 inches, is the queen of the fleet by a full 10 feet. Tiara also created a new EX line, which I can only assume stands for excellent or exceptional.

Tiara EX 60 sunpad

The EX 60 is simply brilliant in many ways, allowing owners to tailor the layout to fit their needs. To create this newest crown jewel required combining the superb quality in construction and finish that Tiara is known for with a satisfying level of performance—in this case, 46 mph.

Tiara EX 60 aft seating

I found the interior serene and surprising. It features a full-beam master amidships (you can walk around both sides of the centerline berth) and an equally spacious VIP forward, each en suite. A guest cabin with slide-together berths shares the VIP head.

Tiara EX 60 helm

But the appeal of the EX 60 is the flow of the main deck from the windshield to the hydraulic swim platform. This is a yacht for enjoying the outdoors, with oversize folding doors in the salon and a power window to embrace the aft deck. Here, Tiara offers several seating modules to tailor the cockpit for every need. Our test boat had the aft lounge and breakfast bar, creating an alfresco dining area with a folding table, a galley with a grill, sink and fridge, and an aft-facing bar with stools. Perfect for relaxing on anchor, the cockpit also expands like an origami butterfly thanks to hinged sides that stretch the beam to more than 20 feet.

Tiara EX 60 salon

Power for the Tiara EX 60 consists of twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 turbo diesels. These inline-six 12.8-liter engines connect by jack shafts to IPS pod drives.

Tiara EX 60 berth

It was everything you’d expect. When hammered down, we hit 30 mph in just 17 seconds and topped out at 46 mph. At a mile-eating 29 mph, we were sipping fuel at 52 gph (besting 0.5 mpg is great economy for a boat this size), and joystick maneuvering takes the white knuckles out of tough docking situations.

Tiara EX 60 anchored

How We Tested

  • Engines: Twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13 turbo diesels linked by a jack shaft to IPS pods
  • Drive/Prop: IPS/Volvo Q6 nibral contra-rotating prop sets 3- and 4- blade
  • Gear Ratio: 1.88:1 Fuel Load: 700 gal. Water on Board: 25 gal. Crew Weight: 1,000 lb.

High Points

  • Shhh! Just 69 decibels at cruise and only 72 decibels flat-out, making conversation easy.
  • Elegant decor by Mary Flores. Plus, Tiara’s design team created carved wood headboards in the staterooms and jewellike welds on rails and other metalwork throughout the boat.
  • Seakeeper 9 gyro kept the EX 60 rock-solid, and Volvo Interceptor trim flaps had the boat running flat, even during hard acceleration.
  • A two-burner cooktop on a 60-footer (not counting the cockpit grill) hints strongly at dining ashore.
  • Deck has a lot of ups and downs: Step up to the helm level, up to the dinette, down two steps to the cockpit seating, and down two steps to the swim platform. Sure-footed guests are welcome.

Toughest Competitor

Sixty-footers without a flybridge aren’t common, but the Sunseeker Evo 60 ($2.4 million) or the Princess V60 ($2.6 million) are similar, although missing the fold-down cockpit sides and flexible cockpit layouts.

Tiara Today

Tiara: the new quality leader, by david pascoe.

We've always liked Tiara and Pursuit boats, both products of S2 Yachts of Holland, Michigan. In times past we've recommended them as good, solid quality, well-designed boats that are a bit more utilitarian than glitzy. The kind of boat that holds up well to year 'round use under the blazing Florida sun, as well as the five month monsoon season that can dump 80" of rain on your boat annually.

One of the things I've always liked about them was how they restrained themselves from loading their boats up with cheap hardware and other gratuitous junk just to give you the appearance of getting more. No plastic hardware to turn black with mildew, or to disintegrate from sunlight. No die cast zinc alloy or crummy aluminum.

Naturally, as surveyors, our primary business is with used boats, so we are usually several years behind the times on new models. Thus, it was several years ago that we began to notice a change in Tiara. For one thing, they started making an appeal to the high end sport fishing market. Whereas boats like the 3600 Open had rather plane-Jane cockpits, now we started seeing things like built in bait wells, tackle centers, rod storage lockers, Rybovich style hull vents and all those kind of goodies. Keeping up with the sport fishing Joneses as it were.

But the sport fishing market is a rather limited one, and so Tiara has wisely taken their "open" line of models and created both dedicated fishermen and cruisers. The primary difference of the two being the amount of seating and lack of obstructions in the cockpit areas for the fishermen.

Most recently we were assigned the task of looking over three brand new Tiaras. Now we get to see up close and personal what we'd previously been seeing only from a distance. Without question, Tiara has raised the quality a notch or two. Which, of course, means that the price tag has gone up along with it. That should go without saying. Want good? Gotta pay for it. We can say without reservation that, for the price, what you are getting is not a snow job, not some marketing ploy to sell you something that looks good today, but turns to dust tomorrow. No, these boats have some bone deep quality in them.

First off, we got to compare the 35 Open with the 4100. As is common in the industry, the overall quality tends to go up with the size and price of the boat, and that is clearly the case here. With the 4300 Open, Tiara is clearly taking a shot at Viking and Hatteras, with all the latest design, quality and style features to match. As for Hatteras, they seem too busy with their mega yacht business to bother with the little guys. Can't remember when we last looked at a late model under 50 feet.

The interior of the 4300 is a real eye-catcher. Done out all in teak (Gasp! Dark wood!) it is positively scrumptious. I wish a picture could tell the story, but it really can't. The last time we raved about quality wood work was on the 1997 Viking 43 SF which had less of it, but better overall quality. Frankly, I'm glad to see teak interiors making a come back. Why? For one thing, it is durable. If you screw it all up, the finish can be restored. Not so with light color woods like ash, oak and maple that get permanently stained.

Tiara 4300 Open

The 4300 Open. No pretense at luxury here, it looks better live than this photo.

Up north, where the sun doesn't shine that much, dark interiors are understandably unpopular. But here in the tropics, sunny days can get just as boring -- not to mention the blinding light, heat and carcinoma that it causes -- so popping down into your deep dark abode immediately renders a sense of soothing coolness, away from the glare and shutting out the rest of the world. If you like that sort of atmosphere, you'll love this one. And it is decidedly masculine. No red or green leather and brass, but you can get teal. Close enough. Spittoons and cigar clippers are optional, for those of you who defy convention and love your Monte Chistos and La Habanas. Easy clean vinyl headliner if you're into the soothing effects of tobacco.

With the 4300, start with a beveled edge, tongue-and-groove teak planked sole with holly stepping. Not the most practical design in terms of keeping dirt out of the cracks, but boy it sure looks great. The sculptured effect is immediately obvious and exudes an amazing sense of quality. Then we've got a fold up dinette table with round, solid teak edge banding a good 2" thick with 180 degree round over; joiner work is first class.

The 3500 had a limed ash or oak interior that was nice, but the veneers weren't the best, nor was the joiner work really great. There were cabinets and drawers veneer faced with veneer edge banding that left very hard corners and a failure to give the impression of great workmanship. Nice, but not impressive to those who recognize quality; the finish on the wood was also thin. Contrasting this with the 4300, where we find a lot more rounding, the finish is obviously well done. So what's the big deal with rounding? Well, for one thing square is cheaper to make than round. Secondly, I'd much rather bump into a rounded corner than a sharp one. I got enough scars on my body. But the finish on the woods is clearly better than the 3500, giving the impression (whether it is or not) of overall higher quality and better workmanship.

The overall design, selection of materials and color scheme is superb. Everything is mute without appearing dull. Color freaks won't care for this, but when it comes to a yacht, it's foolish to stray into the realm of the trendy or flashy. Gotta think about resale; if it's loud, it gets hard to sell when the flavor of the day constantly changes. The color schemes used here are timeless and will not go out of style. Call it subdued good taste. Smart money stays conservative. Moreover, the use of foam padded vinyl is kept to a merciful minimum and you're new Tiara won't smell like like a vinyl factory; instead, it smells like wood.

Full, fiberglass liners make our day for the head compartments, with hose-down ease of cleaning on the smaller models, stall showers on the larger. While the galley on the 3500 resembles more closely a sandwich board, on the 37 and up, they're darn nice, although having wood cabinets directly above a pot of boiling water doesn't make good sense. Yet in all models, the amount of storage space is more than adequate, plus sensibly designed with spaces to store pots as well as dishes without any contortionist exercises.

Tiara

The trained eye can't fail but to notice the detail work on this hatch cover. Have you had enough of glued-on insulation falling off? That's not going to happen with this one.

TiaraEdit-3a.JPG

Even though a bit too much is crammed into this 3500 engine compartment, it's hard not to be impressed by the high quality detail work, starting with fluorescent lighting and the deep hatch gutters to keep water out.

As a true sport fisherman, both the 35 and 43 flunk the test by virtue of cockpits compromised for the cocktail crowd. There is altogether too much upholstery and obstructions for those who are going to give a cockpit a lot of hard use. Some of this glitz is optional, so you'll need to check on how much can be eliminated from the show models. On the 35, the large, L-shaped settee at forward cockpit creates a serious traffic bottle neck, leaving only a 14" wide walk thru. Along with a hinged, pneumatically operated rear seat, there are too many obstructions. For sports-minded people, for the outdoorsy types, the last thing you want is clutter in the cockpit; that's for the cocktail cruisers where seating a lot of people is the primary requirement.

On attention to design detail, we're getting close to as good as it gets. I'm talking about things like:

  • Whether salt water is going to leak all over your engines and machinery when you go to sea. Or when you hit the deck with a hose to wash it. Take a look at the hatch design detail in the nearby photo. A hatch like that probably costs 4X what the run of the mill hatch would cost. Notice that the insulation is not just glued on so that it's going to fall off in a few years. And that you can take the underliner off in order to replace the insulation when it gets all tore up, as it inevitably will.
  • Hatch gutters: The gutters on the electrically lifted large hatch section are very large and deep. The drains are 2" diameter so they won't clog up easily. Know what happens when an improperly designed drainage system gets clogged up? Yep, the water overflows and onto tens of thousands of dollars worth of machinery. If you wonder why we ridicule bad design, that's it.
  • Details like the hatch and cabinet doors are thru-bolted, not screwed into fiberglass.
  • Details like the transom door hinges are double thick stainless with an adequately constructed jamb so the whole arrangement isn't going to break apart from the tremendous leverage applied by the door.
  • Details like proper rounding of fiberglass moldings so they don't fracture at sharp angles.
  • Details like gaskets and strong dogs on all hatches.
  • Overall better quality hardware.
  • A properly constructed hull/deck joint and rub rails so that 5 years from the time you write the check, the side of your boat doesn't look like it went through a hurricane
  • Strong windshields with base gutters to drain off the inevitable leakage.
  • Well laid out electric panels. Various other switches and panels aren't scattered all over the place. For example, on one new boat we recently looked at, we found electrical controls in five different locations, taking a good hour just to figure out where things were and how they operated. On these boats, everything is instantly clear; never spent more than a minute looking for a switch.

The day prior to writing this, I did a survey on a 36 footer that had the electric panel crunched between the helm and the cabin side, literally at floor level. Had to get on my hands and knees to operate a switch. How on earth could anyone tolerate such a thing, I wondered. I mean, is it someone's idea of great fun to have to stand on your head to read a volt meter or throw a switch?  Talk about a designer with his head up his ass. Where are the panels on a Tiara? At eye level where they should be.

I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Real quality is not only in materials but in the design details, all of which make ownership and operation of the vessel far 6easier and less costly, often requiring you pay for things once, rather than twice or three times.

The engine compartments on all the Tiaras were something of a let down. Not that they're not loaded with good quality stuff, but like a Sea Ray, not much thought was given to how anyone is going to reach a lot of stuff for repair or service. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, this has got to give you a pause for consideration. Even with the opening full deck section, things are still hard to reach, yet it's hard not to be impressed with the quality.

Tiara Engine Compartment

The down side on the smaller models. Some engine compartments that can be pretty cramped. It's extremely hard to reach anything. That's the transmission down there.

As you can see in the photo above, there's a nice, easy-clean glass headliner, along with fluorescent lighting so at least you can see what you're doing. The problem is simply too much in too small a space. You got your nice big cabin and cockpit, but this is the price you pay for that.

But you'll find other great features like the cabin door on really good rollers and also with a sliding screen. Both slide as easy as can be. And the electrically opened center windshield is another nice feature. So too is the manner in which the Bimini top is fitted to the windshield; it has only an 8" high eisenglass zippered section that is easy to open to let the air through. Neat.

I also like the heavily rounded toe rails with at least a 4" radius. Not only does this look good, but it makes the gunwale stronger and much less prone to stress cracking when you really bang against a piling.

Another real strong point is the ergonomics of the helm which I found superb, particularly with an electrically operated helm seat. Of course, this is just another electric gizmo to crap out on you, but like electric seats in a car, it is a nice feature. However, if you like to sit and steer with your hands, forget it. This is one for sitting back and steering with your feet, which is my usual method.

One thing Tiara did that is a real head scratcher is that they made the deck up under the windshield black. I don't think I need explain why that is not good for a variety of reasons.

Tiara 3500 Helm

The helm designs are generally superb. This is the 3500 with a power seat.

Easy boarding. Some of the cockpit designs we've seen lately are truly atrocious. It's hard to image that a designer figures that you could tolerate only boarding over the transom, or having to climb all over the upholstered seating -- or worse yet -- walking across a wet bar. But they do. The 3500 has a built-in step each side, which is completely out of the way so you don't get to trip over it, and immediately behind the arch where there is a handy grab rail. And with that pointed diamond non-skid pattern, there's no chance of slipping and getting your bones rearranged. Even Grandma could board with relative ease. But, if you like to mimic the Europeans, who apparently don't have many docks, she's got a 30" wide platform that is removable. It looks like it's integral, but it's not.

Aside from the upholstery, there isn't much in the cockpit area to go to rot and ruin. The little wet bar has a heavily rounded, deep lid with no steel hardware and not much else. Apparently Tiara designers know that salt water comes cascading over the bow to frequently douse the cockpit with that wonderfully corrosive fluid. If stuff can't withstand salt water, it shouldn't be on a boat. In this case, it isn't. Plus you may think that the windshield is ungainly high -- would you like to have a nice, sleek, low Euro style windshield. Well, just keep in mind that the high windshield keeps salt spray off most of your goodies at the helm. Euro style is great in the showroom but it sucks canal water in out here in the real world.

Clearly Tiara is taking a run at being the quality leader. Equally clear is that they're getting close, particularly with the smaller models. In the forty foot range, the engine rooms are a bit of a disappointment and don't measure up to Hatteras or Viking, the later of which has the best machinery installations of any production builder.

If you're not an aficionado, this won't much matter to you. But for today's yachtsmen, a well designed and gleaming machinery space ranks just as high as the exterior appearance, a throwback to our early days of hot-rodding and chrome plating everything. Half the fun of ownership is show-and-tell, like cruising the burger stand on Friday night and opening your hood for all to see. Hey, buddy, whatcha got in there? My Awlgripped, chrome plated 8V92, turbocharged, after burner Dee Twa Diesels, man. The ones with the 250 cc injectors, man. Good for one weeks fishin' and then rebuild 'em. Divorced the wife, bought a boat. A hot rod boat, that is. And why the heck not? Nobody makes a car these days anyone could have an ounce of pride in owning. They're all the same plastic junk. Not even a spot of chrome left on a Jaguar, for God's sake.

It's an injection molded, throw-away, plastic world out there folks. Boats like these represent the last of the world of quality and pride in ownership in something that is mass produced. For those who can afford it.

For the time being, for production builders who turn out a lot of boats, I'll give Tiara the number two spot behind Viking.

See ya at Walker's, chum. Wanna race?

There are multiple stainless steel cup holders, grab rails, and charging outlets.

The 2025 Tiara Yachts 34 LS comes with a molded fiberglass hardtop that includes an integrated visor and a custom tempered glass curved windshield with a wiper.

There is an overhead electronic mounting surface and a hatch on the centerline. You will also find red and white LED lights along with a navigation light, and multicolored LED underwater lighting.

For Sale: 2020 Tiara Yachts 49 Coupe

  • By Donny Gilbert
  • October 29, 2024

Tiara 49 Coupe

Course Correction, a 2020 Tiara 49 Coupe, is a single-owner, well-maintained yacht that has been docked in a freshwater slip on Lake Union in Seattle. This cruise-ready, family-friendly vessel has three staterooms and two heads. Course Correction has recently been put on the market by Alexander Marine USA for $1.45 million.

Twin 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800 diesel engines can propel Course Correction, which displaces 41,000 pounds, to a 31-knot top hop. At a 26-knot cruise speed, range is about 200 nautical miles.

Tiara 49 Coupe

“Entering the single-level salon through a slider, I found the decor striking. Gray is the new beige, and there are a variety of surfaces in a variety of textures, from wood grain to slick, enhancing one another. The cherry sole and trim offer a touch of warmth and a nautical feel. The helm module —housing dual multifunction displays, switches and more—seemed to float. It had Tiara’s hallmark “pencil holder” design, allowing the skipper to keep sundry items secure and at hand,” Yachting previously reported .”

The helm to starboard has a teak sole and a custom double-wide leather captain’s bench-style seat with footrests and all controls within arm’s reach. Two large windscreens with wipers along with large side windows give the captain a full view of the environment. A Seakeeper gyrostabilizer keeps the vessel comfortable in sloopy seas while joystick control enhances close-quarter maneuvering. Upgraded with the latest Docking Assist system, “Dock Hold feature,” skippers can set the amount of thrust to hold the vessel at dock while single-handedly tying off the vessel.

Tiara 49 Coupe

Guests can relax on a C-shaped  dinette with a folding table to port, which is adjacent to the helm, and a  bench-style settee abaft the helm station to starboard. Large side windows give guests a 360-degree view while a retractable roof gives guests the option of sun or shade. The aft galley has a stainless-steel sink, electric cooktop, microwave and electric BBQ mounted on the transom. Cold goods can be stowed in the refrigerator and dry goods in multiple cabinets and drawers.

Course Correction’s cockpit is spacious and can be shaded by a retractable sunshade. There’s an aft-facing  bench-style settee to port and an L-shaped transom settee with table, a great setup for alfresco style dining. Step down to the extended swim platform with access to the electric BBQ and a refrigerator. For those looking for a little more privacy, walk up to the bow and have your own private party on a couple of sun pads.

Tiara 49 Coupe

After a long day on the water, everyone can retire to one of three staterooms. Accommodations include a master stateroom has a walk-around island berth and ensuite head, a VIP stateroom with a walk-around island berth and a third guest stateroom with twin-size over/under berths with a shared head. Mattresses in the master and VIP stateroom were recently upgraded.

Alexander Marine stated that “many features of this boat are upgraded such as the exterior custom made Sunbrella covers as well as new Master and VIP stateroom mattresses recently installed. The bunks also had comfort pads to improve the sleep comfort. The boat has had professional care with annual servicing and fresh epoxy bottom and bottom painting. The specifications and technology on board this American Made boat will astonish you. It is smooth, quiet and efficient and has a Seakeeper Gyroscopic Stabilization system that will take the roll and almost eliminate it. It is such an easy boat to operate with the Integrated Propulsion System the control system gives you the ability to make the entire boat spin or point in any direction you desire.”

Where is Course Correction located? The yacht is currently lying in Seattle.
