The new design trends shaping superyacht beach clubs
As the focus of life on board moves closer to the water, the beach club is becoming the highlight, learns Claire Wrathall
Given the extent to which the pandemic has altered human behaviour, as we seek to avoid each other, it’s not surprising that yacht owners have sought sanctuary on their boats. “A yacht is the best place to be completely safe,” says Sabrina Monteleone, founder and proprietor of Sabrina Monte-Carlo , the Côte d’Azur’s go-to supplier of deck furniture, furnishings and table settings. “Owners now want to stay alone on their boats; they no longer go out.”
Even last winter in St Barths, nobody was going ashore to actual beaches, according to Monteleone. “No, your own beach club is the place to be now,” she says. “On a big boat, on the first or second deck, you don’t really sense the water. But on the platform, the water is right there; you can really feel the sea. Whenever we do a refit, the owner wants to increase the platform.”
It comes as no surprise, then, that beach clubs have moved on from the time when they were little more than an aft bathing platform shaded by a raised transom door and backed by the toy garage. Now, she says, “they are more like pool houses”, complete with sofas, armchairs and ottomans, adjoining gyms and spas, and perhaps a bar. These days a beach club is somewhere to spend the whole day, returning upstairs only at mealtimes.
Increasingly, too, the platform will be directly connected to the main deck by a staircase . “Because the main deck is becoming the most important area of the boat,” says Francesca Muzio, co-founder of the Ancona-based practice FM Architettura d’Interni , whose recent projects include the spectacular interiors (designed jointly with Nauta Design ) of the aptly named and soon-to-be-launched 88-metre Feadship Zen designed by De Voogt Naval Architects . She has also observed a change in the way yachts are used. Where once the upper deck was the most important area, she continues, the focus of activity “is moving downstairs”, as owners increasingly request inside-outside spaces “like verandas or loggias” on the main deck.
She partly attributes this to a fear of UV rays. “The sun is the enemy these days,” she says. “People no longer want to be exposed to it.” Rather than gigantic sunpads, they want sheltered outdoor seating areas that are palpably close to the water, possibly filled with greenery and furnished with “couches, rugs, lanterns” and lots of tactile textiles. “You can even find velvets and chenilles and other soft materials suitable for an outdoor marine environment now, so you can really dress it like an interior,” she says. “It’s a very Mediterranean concept.”
Colder climates can equally be allowed for. On the recently refitted 72-metre Damen -built explorer yacht Game Changer , which travels far and wide, the beach club has heating so that it can, in principle, function as a place to sit out even when the boat is in Antarctic or Arctic waters.
These spaces can be equipped for entertainment too. Take the beach club on Severin*s , the 55-metre Baglietto -built superyacht designed by Francesco Paszkowski and launched last year. It has not only a steam shower, but also a 4K-resolution LED wall with an area of about six square metres suitable for video art or screening movies or sports. It’s the creation of audiovisual specialist Videoworks, which also put a retractable 55-inch 4K outdoor television with 180-degree rotation on the yacht’s sundeck that can be viewed either from the lounge or the pool, and a 90-inch cinema screen on the upper deck.
Both Monteleone and Muzio also see beach clubs and decks as opportunities to use bolder colour. “There has to be harmony, and it has to blend with the indoor areas,” says Muzio. “But you can have fun outside. I like to add colour with cushions and towels,” adds Monteleone.
On Olivia , a Russian navy hydrographic survey vessel that was converted into a 69-metre explorer yacht , she used a “very cool” palette of grey, yellow and white on the platform. While on Bold , the 85.3-metre Silveryachts -built expedition yacht designed by her husband, Espen Øino , she chose a vibrant vermilion. Check out the curvaceous armchairs (Smile by Paola Lenti) that stand on the beach club, to which an inflatable platform attaches, so that the yacht’s toys are readily to hand. On Cosmos , which Heesen is due to deliver in 2022, the beach club not only contains a sunken bar but also is sited beneath the seven-metre waterfall-fed glass-bottom pool, so it is lit by sunshine refracted through water.
Launched in 2020 and designed by Luca Dini , 49.7-metre Rossinavi -built LEL is another new yacht with an expansive and versatile beach club, a response to her owner’s brief for “generous open spaces to make the most of the open air and water”. Dini’s solution was to create “an actual terrace overlooking the sea, a pied-à-terre dans l’eau, where nature meets technology”. The partially indoor space, separated from the garage by an automatic door, is spacious enough to store the tender. Lower the side and transom doors and open the louvres, however, and, when furnished, it becomes an elegant and airy room complete with a bar that extends out over the water – the perfect setting for waterside living and entertaining.
For as Muzio notes, clients no longer commission projects with instructions to adhere to “a particular style such as art deco or modern”. What matters more, she says, is their “lifestyle”, how they want to live and where they want to spend time – which tends to be within sight of the sea.

American Magic's hydrogen-powered, hydrofoiling chase boat built by Bluegame is designed to be ... [+] sustainable and fast enough to keep up with the team's AC 75
Now that the Sanlorenzo Group of shipyards will be assuming total ownership of the Nautor Group over the next four years. And the Sanlorenzo Group’s Bluegame brand just delivered its first fully-foiling, all-hydrogen-powered chase boat to the New York Yacht Club American Magic America’s Cup team that’s competing for the right to challenge for the America’s Cup in Barcelona in the coming months. Saying Sanlorenzo Group President and CEO Massimo Perotti has been a “bit busy” might be a “bit of an understatement.”
Sanlorenzo Group President and CEO Massimo Perotti
But no matter how you describe it, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of the iconic Nautor Swan sailing yacht brand (and the entire Nautor Group ) along with successfully launching a 100% emission-free powerboat that’s capable of speeds up to 50 knots and has a range of up to 180 miles, shows Perotti’s commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainability.
And as the yachting world continues to consolidate, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of Nautor Swan makes a lot of sense.
Nautor Swan is becoming part of the San Lorenzo Group
“Today, my goal is to propel forwards a brand that is so beloved and respected and ensure its longevity by entrusting it to one of the world’s leading nautical groups, led by Massimo Perotti, one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs in the marine industry,” said Nautor Group President Leonardo Ferragamo when the sale was announced. “This will enable it to reach the many and important potentials for which we have worked with passion and dedication over the years.”

“Signing this agreement represents another milestone for our strategy,” Perotti added. “Nautor Swan’s heritage is revered worldwide for its key ingredients: elegance, quality, performance combined with solidity thanks to the advanced construction techniques, innovation and unrivalled seaworthiness.”

Meanwhile, another Sanlorenzo brand, Bluegame made headlines recently by successfully launching their first Bluegame Hydrogen (BGH) zero-emission, hydrogen-powered chase boat they developed and built for the New York Yacht Club American Magic team to use in the 37th edition of the America's Cup that’s just getting underway in Barcelona this week.
Bluegame developed and built the 100% hydrogen powered America's Cup chase boat was just delivered ... [+] to the American Magic team
It was designed following the strict requirements of the America's Cup Protocol to be able to fly on foils at 50 knots alongside American Magic's AC75 on the racecourse. And the use of hydrogen as the sole propulsion system marks an important milestone in sustainable technology for the entire recreational boating industry.
“From its origins, the history of Bluegame has been one of innovation and courage," Bluegame CEO Carla Demaria said at the launch. "The courage to push boundaries, to go beyond the conventional, and to challenge the impossible, as we did with the BGH. We are proud to participate in the America's Cup alongside the prestigious American Magic team, which has made history as the world's oldest active international sporting competition.”
“Choosing Bluegame for our hydrogen support boat was an easy decision for American Magic”, said American Magic President of Sailing Operations and Skipper Terry Hutchinson. “Bluegame’s cutting-edge marine technology and unwavering commitment to sustainability align perfectly with our values. Their passion for green innovation makes them an ideal partner for this groundbreaking initiative.”
Bluegame's BGH AC chase boat underway in Barcelona
Meanwhile Bluegame’s Head of Product Strategy Luca Santella just touched on how hard this project was. "The creation of the BGH involved a series of extremely complex challenges in terms of design, engineering, and materials research. For this reason, Bluegame assembled a team of exceptional competence, consisting of professionals with extensive experience in the world of the America's Cup. The efforts and significant investments in research and development to achieve the performance, speed, maneuverability, and reliability necessary to successfully support the American Magic team have been rewarded. The result is a vessel that marks a new, historic milestone in the application of cutting-edge technologies for more sustainable boating”.
In the coming weeks, Bluegame will also deliver a second BGH to the Orient Express Racing Team , America's Cup from France.

Sponsored by the \; Orcas I sland Yacht Club  \;and part of the second annual \; North Sound Party Circuit\,  \;this annual re gatta promises great fun. As one of the first events to be cancelled at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020\, we are excited to welcome old and new friends in 2021. While we don't expect to be able to host group social even ts\, we plan to run on-the-water racing.
The regatta is held at Rosar io Resort on beautiful Orcas Island. With its unique north/south orientatio n and high bluffs\, East Sound often enjoys better wind when there is littl e elsewhere in the area. Six miles long with very little power boat traffic \, East Sound is an exceptional venue. Planned racing includes buoy and dis tance courses. Mooring and lodging are available through \; Rosario Resort  \;(use code OIYC21 to get $ 10/night per room off room reservations) and there are plenty of activities for non-sailors to enjoy too. This regatta will be a \; Clean Regatta.
Join fellow OIYC members on a summer evening at the Orcas Island Winery\, a boutique family vineyard and winery on Crow Valley Road\ , to enjoy some delicious wines in the modern farmhouse tasting room and wi ne garden! \; Flights\, glasses or bottles of wine and picnic food boxe s will be available.
I hope you’re feeling groovy and ready to embrace \; Hippie Daze ! If you would like a ready-made outfit\, look no f urther than our \; Opening Day Clothing Shop &nb sp\;where you can purchase cool shirts and hoodies customized for opening d ay. Clothing will be available for pickup at the pancake breakfast at 08:30 on Opening Day. \; Click here to place your order  \;no late r than \; April 28 . \;
And yes\, you h eard that right— pancakes !! With many of our members becomi ng fully vaccinated and the \; COVID restrictions  \;easing\, we’re hopeful that in a month’s time we’ll be able to host you for not one\ , but two eating extravaganzas. Join us at the West Sound Community Center for (free!) pancakes from 8:30⇨10:00. Indoor capacity will likely be limite d to 50 people with additional seating available at the picnic shelter. We’ ll also be inviting our West Sound community neighbors to join us for break fast.
After breakfast\, the racers will sprint to their boats and hea d out onto West Sound for the Opening Day \; sailboat race . Weather permitting\, we hope to make it equally fun for spectators\, s o hang around. Perhaps the universe will go all trippy on us and we’ll have backwards-flying spinnakers again?
At noon\, we’ll have the traditio nal \; boat parade . I’ll send out details closer to the day\, but the general program is to decorate your boat ahead of time and t hen line up south of Picnic Island (just south of West Sound Marina) at 11: 45. At noon\, we’ll proceed by the OIYC club dock where we’ll salute our Co mmodore Jeff Johnson and first lady Angie and then serpentine back so every one gets to see each other’s boats.

This cruise will be piloted by Jeff and Diane Morris for tho se that have taken the Cruisers Class on August 14.  \;We’ll leave for Reid Harbor on Friday\, the 20 th \, for our annual\, “Let’s go cr uisin’ together” cruise. Not only will this give us an opportunity to check out the various ways different manufacturers have installed our electrical systems (and maybe troubleshoot some of those irksome problems we’ve been experiencing) but also have some time for fellowship\, and maybe a hike to the school or lighthouse. Rumor has it that Roche Harbor donuts might also be procured.
Calling all OIYC members!
It is August and we are all in need of an excuse for a club party! I am pleased to announce that just r ecently our very own \; Christina and Justin Wolfe   \;have been selected by US sailing as one of two double handed crews to rep resent the United States in the \; 2021 Offshore World Championship  \;in Italy next month. This is an extraordinary achievement and one that I feel should be celebra ted by all members of our club. \;
Christina and Justin joined ou r club in 2017. They both currently serve on the \; Sail Orcas  \;board\, and have worked tirelessly in pro moting our club's youth and women instructional sailing programs. Justin al so currently serves as an OIYC board member as the Fleet Captain Junior Sai l. To say the least\, this couple is a juggernaut for promoting sailing wit hin our club! The Wolfe's have sailed together as a couple over 25 years. T hey have logged more than 12\,000 miles of double-handed offshore sailing/r acing and truly embrace the challenge. "The more difficult the race\, the b etter!" Recent achievements include 1st overall in the Pacific NW Offshore Race\, 1st over-all in Race to the Straits\, and 1st overall at the Pacific NW Race Week. They also co-founded the PNW Shorthanded Sailing Society in 2020.
To celebrate this great achievement\, OIYC will be hosting an I talian-themed fundraising dinner on \; August 21 at 5 pm at the OIYC picnic shelter  \;with the entire club invited\, along wit h our fellow boaters in Bellingham and Anacortes. The scrumptious Italian m enu will consist of meat or veggie lasagna\, salad\, garlic bread\, and a d elicious desert-all for a small donation of $20! Dressing in your favorite Italian threads is also encouraged!
We will be hosting a silent auction online\, along with a live auction of so me very fun select offerings. All attendees\, please bring a bottle of wine ($30-$100 cost) to donate to a fun $20/ticket raffle that enables everyone to go home with something special from the evening. If you are unable to a ttend this fun event but wish to support the Wolfe's and Sail Orcas\, pleas e consider a monetary donation (use the \; link above )  \;or provide an item for auction (email me at \; brow [email protected] ).
Visit the silent auction here: \; https://o iyc.betterworld.org/auctions/wolfe-fundraiser  \;
This fundraising event is possible through the generous sponsorship of Sandy an d Janet Horwitz\, and there is no financial burden to OIYC. As a club\, thi s event is a unique opportunity to support club members who make a differen ce within our club and community. This adventure for the Wolfe's is expecte d to cost in excess of $45k and our goal as a club is to provide $10k to Ch ris and Justin with the remainder of all donations going to Sail Orcas\, ou r club's youth sailing program.
Please help me in congratulating Chri s and Justin!
Jeff Johnson Commodore\, OIYC

Dear OIYC Women\,
Do you remember our last Women’s Lunch? \; It was at The Lower Tavern on Wednesday\, Ma rch 11\, 2020\, the last day before we became completely aware that we need ed to distance ourselves and isolate because of COVID. This happened just a s our core group was coalescing and getting to know each other better at ev ery event\, and we were forming friendships that might last for the rest of our lives. I treasure that event and every one of you who were there.
