Malta is placed in the Middle of the Mediterranean Sea on the cusp of the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Mediterranean luxury yacht charter grounds. Nearby, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands have copious volcanic sites that have created unique landscapes and fertile soils that have been put to use as vineyards.

Also close by is the Amalfi Coast, with such sites as Naples and the charming clifftop town of Ravello.

Valletta on its own has plenty to fill your days: Begin your exploration of its history in the unmissable National War Museum in Fort St. Elmo - while Malta has several war museums, this is the most comprehensive and well maintained. Next door, the Knights Hospitallers is worth a look and is an atmospheric venue for events, while out in the fresh air the highly maintained Lower Barrakka Gardens give magnificent views out over the harbour. Visitors venturing into the town centre have the opportunity to enter The Grandmaster Palace Courtyard to learn more about the city's storied past. As the sun sets, discover the vibrant bar and club scene along the waterfront.

As you leave behind the crowds and spend your time in transit dining alfresco or sunbathing on the sundeck, and find a serene cove to anchor and sleep in peace surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Inland, Mdina is known for its bars and pedestrianised shopping streets, and in particular for the Silent City where there are historical treasures and a collection of Caravaggio paintings. St. Paul's Catacombs is also an incredible and worthwhile tour before your head down the southern roads to the 3200 BC ruins of Ħaġar Qim and the Blue Grotto, one of the most stunning natural sites in Malta.

The sleepy island of Gozo is a part of the Malta archipelago and is thought to be the legendary "Calypso’s Isle" of Homer’s Odyssey. It’s a peaceful, mystical backwater, with rugged landscape and spectacular coastline. Pull into rocky inlets or red sand beaches and spend hours entertaining yourself snorkelling, fishing and Scuba diving amongst some of the Mediterranean's best dive sites.

This destination is popular with older travellers who enjoy the peace and quiet, lack of modern development and retention of the old traditions. Many of the buildings are still made from natural stone instead of concrete so Gozo has an atmosphere all of its own.

Comino is a small inhabited island with only four people living there. Although there is a hotel, many visitors just come for the day to dive in the famous Blue Lagoon, leaving the rest of the island bays and beaches to your group. By kayak, paddleboard or tender, take your time amongst the Santa Maria and Julia caves to the west, where the white cliffs and topaz blue sea are perfect for adventurers and for artists and photographers to capture.

The Blue Lagoon is fairly busy from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, after which luxury yacht charter parties will have the place to themselves. Travel south to the natural amphitheatre of the Crystal Lagoon with its steep cliffs and glassy green water, which provides excellent seclusion for an overnight anchorage.

Yachting seasons & climate:.

Malta has an inviting year-round climate, where the winter season temperature drops to a warm average of 13°C/55°F and summer soars to a comfortable 27°C/81°F, with a high of 32°C/90°F.

From July to September the sea temperature sits around 26°C/79°F and are wonderfully warm for snorkelling, watersports and for beginner Scuba divers heading down to depths around 10m/33ft.

July is the driest month with little to no rainfall, and November through to January is the wettest season and visitors should plan their wardrobe accordingly.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

Although there are some excellent beaches across the three main islands of Malta, visitors are most likely to spend their time exploring the streets of Valetta and the ruins to be found from the coast through to the interior. As such, a sturdy pair of hiking boots and a lightweight jacket is recommended, and visitors might want to include a long pair of trousers for walking along overgrown trails.

In town, smart-casual dress is typically seen for the cafes, bars and clubs as well as visiting the numerous museums, galleries and religious sites.

Best time to go:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Malta yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August tends to have the best weather, as these are the hottest months with lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.

Other good times to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

Autumn can be a great time to visit when the sea temperatures are still warm and there is a significant amount of sunshine, however visitors should expect short sharp thunderstorms during the evenings of this season.

A Mediterranean archipelago where the West meets the East

Lying south of Sicily and to the north of Africa, the Maltese archipelago sits like a jewel in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. Of this stunning cluster just three islands are inhabited which are Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta is the largest island of the trio and boasts the cultural heart of the archipelago, whilst Gozo and Comino are untouched and secluded.

The Republic of Malta has long been an international crossroads and lies in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. Boasting an eventful history, few European countries are as steeped in history and culture as Malta, with beaches, ruins and picturesque cities all entwined in a concentrated area. Exploring Malta by charter yacht is an idyllic way to discover secluded bays and rugged coves and with warm crystalline waters a great way to take advantage of the best diving spots.

Remnants of Malta’s vibrant past can be found in the prehistoric ruins, beautiful baroque architecture and stunning cathedrals. At Marina di Valletta we offer four types of Berthing for yachts from 10 to 50+ metre Superyachts.

Transit Berths are available on a daily or monthly rate. Winter / Summer from 1 Oct > 31 May and 1 Jun > 30 Sept. Annual Contract berthing from 1st June to 31st May. The Marina also offers a limited number of 10/20 year leases at advantageous, long-term conditions.

Yachting Malta is a public private partnership between the Government of Malta and the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Launched in April 2015, the organisation’s primary role is to identify and attract high profile yachting events to the Maltese Islands, including sailing regattas, power racing, boat shows, yachting awards & conferences.  Yachting Malta also aims to enhance the quality and growth of already established events.

Another role is to foster and promote yachting and associated international activities with an emphasis on the young.  This includes education and training in the fundamentals of sailing, powerboat racing and water safety.

The organisation also serves as a consultative voice to the relevant authorities vis a vis infrastructural yachting projects such as new breakwaters, yacht services & marinas. One of Yachting Malta’s goals is to support the increase the range and volume of berthing facilities and yacht services in Malta and Gozo.

Another crucial focus for Yachting Malta is the promotion of Malta as a yachting destination for super yachts. The aim is to make Malta a better cruising ground and wintering base for this 24m+ luxury and niche industry.

During the first year of operation Yachting Malta has consulted and listened carefully to the key players of the industry and the sports sector. As a result of this consultation Yachting Malta has developed a clear strategy with 120 identified initiatives related to the sports sector, leisure yachting and super yachts.  The initiatives include proposals related to industry planning, policy, tax incentives, legislative updates and enforcement matters. Once put into practice these initiatives will place Malta in a prominent position on the international yachting map.

Yachting Malta’s overall aim is to promote Malta’s leading name and tradition as a yachting destination in the Mediterranean. Whilst maximising Malta’s yachting potential, the organisation will aim to achieve a mark-up in overall quality of the Maltese yachting product. Ensuring excellence and competitiveness throughout the sector is Yachting Malta’s consistent target.

Superyacht sinks latest: Tech tycoon Mike Lynch's body among five identified - but daughter Hannah missing

Five bodies have been found and now identified in the search for those missing after a yacht sank off the Sicily coast, including that of tech tycoon Mike Lynch. His daughter, 18, remains unaccounted for. Six people have died in total.

The family of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy have released a statement after the couple were confirmed to have died in the yacht disaster.

The statement reads: "We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation.

"Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

"Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

"This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder. Our only ask is that our family's privacy is respected at this time."

BBC director-general Tim Davie says the corporation is "deeply saddened by the awful news" that at least six people have died in the yacht disaster.

"Mike Lynch was an outstanding BBC director who made a major contribution during his time on the board, from 2007 to 2012," he said in a statement.

"Wise, generous and insightful, he played a particularly key role in accelerating our transformation as a digital organisation.

"Our thoughts are with his family and all others involved."

Questions have been raised about whether the sunken yacht will be salvaged in the investigation into the incident.

Earlier, the Italian coastguard said a decision on whether to raise the vessel from the seabed was "not a topic on the agenda" at the moment - but "will be" in the future.

Nick Barke, head of salvage operations at Boats.co.uk, a boat sales and services company, said the "only real way of knowing" why the yacht sank would be to lift it to the surface.

However, he acknowledged this would be an "expensive and complicated process".

On what that process would be, Mr Barke said divers would attach straps to the boat before hauling it upright and bringing it out of the water.

A neighbour of Mike Lynch has paid tribute to him and his family following the confirmation of the tech tycoon's death today.

Ruth Leigh said despite Mr Lynch and his wife Angela being "wealthy, influential people" they "never put any airs or graces on" in the 15 years she knew them.

Mrs Leigh described how Mr Lynch was a valued member of their village community and would give a Remembrance Day reading at the local church every year.

"From the start they were fantastic neighbours, very friendly," she told Sky News.

"In this very small, rural community, everybody knows everybody, and Mike from the very start made a point of getting to know everybody.

"He maintained fences, extended the estate, looked after the menagerie, and really invested in the place.

"One of the first things we noticed about Mike and Angela was that even though they are wealthy, influential people, they never put any airs or graces on.

"They'd always take the trouble to remember your name and ask after your partner or children. They didn't have to do that. We had a great deal of respect for them."

She added: "They touched a lot of people. They were well thought of, kind, generous, hospitable people."

With the search for Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch still ongoing, Mrs Leigh said she can't imagine what Mrs Lynch and her other daughter, 21-year-old Esme, are going through.

"Angela is alive, which is wonderful, and Esme wasn't on the boat, I don't think," she added.

"But to hear that, our own child has turned 18 and just got their A-level results, words fail me, what Angela must be going through. I can't articulate what that must be like."

The chief executive of Cancer Research UK has added to the tributes paid to Mike Lynch after confirmation of his death today.

Michelle Mitchell said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mike Lynch and all those who have been affected by this tragedy.

"Together with his wife, Angela, Mike was a valued donor to Cancer Research UK and a member of the board for our Create the Change campaign, which funded the building of the Francis Crick Institute.

"His support has helped to bring leading scientists together under one roof to tackle the biggest health challenges faced by humankind, including cancer.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to all the families affected."

Mike Lynch's daughter Hannah Lynch remains missing after the sinking of the yacht off the Sicily coast, an Italian government official has said.

Rescue workers have been searching for six people who were unaccounted for after the disaster on Monday. 

Five bodies have been brought to shore and identified in the past day - among them Mr Lynch.

However his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, has not yet been found, Massimo Mariani, an interior ministry official, has said.

He said she may be inside the wreck or could have been thrown into the sea as the boat sank.

A friend and former business partner of Mike Lynch has described him as "witty, loyal" and a "glorious professional companion".

In a fresh tribute, David Tabizel, who co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch, said: "RIP my friend Mike Lynch. He was exhausting, exhilarating and incisive. 

"A witty, loyal polymath with a mind like a razor blade. A glorious professional companion and true friend. Britain's Bill Gates? Not really. Britain's Steve Jobs. The father of modern AI."

Mr Tabizel said that if he had survived, Mr Lynch would have gone on to achieve "even greater things".

He called him the "rarest of entrepreneurs" who had "big ideas constantly".

It's "probable" that Hannah Lynch will be found somewhere inside the Bayesian, a senior oceanography lecturer has told Sky News.

Divers are still searching for the teenager, who is the final passenger from the yacht still unaccounted for.

There are working theories that her body might not be inside the yacht, though Simon Boxall, a senior lecturer in oceanography at the University of Southampton, says this is unlikely.

"It's probable she is somewhere in the boat," Mr Boxall told Sky News.

"Sadly, I think this is a recovery rather than a rescue mission.

"Now there is a faint chance that she was thrown from the boat and is in the water. But there's been an incredibly intensive search for people, for bodies, after the incident, and it's unlikely.

"The most likely thing is that she will be found eventually within the boat as they work their way through."

Asked about the timeframe in which the Bayesian could be raised from the seabed, Mr Boxall said this would need to happen during a "calm weather window", likely later in autumn. 

Six bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.
