First look: Oceanis Yacht 60 – new bluewater flagship

  • Rupert Holmes
  • March 1, 2022

The new Oceanis Yacht 60 from Beneteau is a stylish and bluewater friendly new flagship model for the French yard

beneteau yachts news

Beneteau’s new flagship, the Oceanis Yacht 60, is the yard’s third model to come out of the collaboration with Lorenzo Argento and Roberto Biscontini that started with the First Yacht 53 three years ago. Their brief for the company’s third generation yacht of this size was to create a sturdy and stylish bluewater friendly vessel with a very high standard of interior finish, including plenty of solid wood joinery.

“They have given us a new way of working and a new perspective,” Beneteau’s Valentin Moreau tells me, “so this boat is very different to the smaller models in the Oceanis range and to the Oceanis Yacht 62 it replaces.”

The design philosophy follows on from that of the First Yachts 53 and the Oceanis Yachts 54, which share the same hull design. The new Oceanis Yacht 60 has proportionately slightly fuller forward sections shape, but it’s by no means extreme in that respect. As with the smaller models, whose hull was originally developed as a performance cruiser, Biscontini opted for a transom with lots of flare and low waterline beam, rather than wide stern sections with marked chines. At the same time, there is more rocker in the aft sections below the waterline.

The combined effect is to reduce wetted surface area to an extent that will markedly boost light airs performance, at the expense of a very small loss of speed when power reaching or in marginal surfing conditions.

Exterior styling is very similar to the Oceanis Yacht 54, including the standard mainsheet arch, low freeboard, low profile coach roof and a hint of reverse sheer. Yet, although hull length is 70cm less than the old 62-footer, overall interior volume remains the same and there’s more space in the owner’s suite. This was achieved in part through abandoning a completely level cabin sole throughout the boat, which wastes a lot of volume below the floor. Instead, there’s a modest step down from the saloon to the forward galley and to the aft cabins, which therefore retain good headroom despite the reduced freeboard.

These changes helped save a whopping five tonnes of weight, yet the sail area remains very similar to that of the previous model. Together with the reduced wetted service area this will transform the sailing experience.

beneteau yachts news

Near level walk around deck layouts have become de rigour for many of today’s new yachts. In this case there are only two 7cm high steps between the transom and the bow, one alongside the guest cockpit and the other near the mast.

However the need for any deck work is kept to a minimum thanks to fitting Harken’s Unwind winching system as standard. This uses electric winches to both wind in and to ease a line, which means the trim of mainsail and jib can be completely controlled from the consoles at each helm station.

Much thought has gone into the ergonomics of these, with a conscious effort to ensure drivers feel protected. The steering positions are therefore inboard of a substantial coaming and benefit from large helm seats with high backrests. The 1.1 m diameter of the wheels are larger than average, but it’s still possible to reach the two pairs of coaming mounted electric winches if necessary.

Argento has also stamped his clean minimalist style on the interior, where attention to detail includes concealed lighting and switches. The saloon is full width, with lots of overhead hatches for natural light and ventilation. A big L-shaped navigation centre, with a leather designer swivelling chair, is clearly aimed at those who work from home while on board. This will be Beneteau’s first model with a full width forward galley. It offers plenty of space and was designed to maximise both stowage volumes and worktop space.

beneteau yachts news

The forward owners cabin occupies a third of the length of the interior, with privacy and soundproofing prioritised. The en suite is therefore at the back of this area, against the main bulkhead, while the bed faces forward, which means it can’t be seen when the door to the galley/saloon is open. It’s a novel layout, but has obvious appeal and also provides more stowage space than conventional arrangements.

This model boat also comes with Beneteau’s Ship Control system, which has been rolled out across all models, as standard. This allows all aspects of the boat to be managed from an app or MFDs when on board, and also from home thanks to the on-board mobile data connection. It’s also available for retrofitting to existing craft.

The first Oceanis 60 is scheduled to be launched in Les Sables d’Olonne in July this year, in advance of a public launch at the Cannes boat show in September. Pricing won’t be released until then.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with New York City under a heat advisory, a gaggle of sailing enthusiasts, dressed in polo shirts and summer dresses, boarded a ferry for Governors Island to watch towering F50 catamarans race along the skyline of Lower Manhattan and in front of the Statue of Liberty.

It was the second day and the finals of the New York Sail Grand Prix, part of SailGP, the growing international sailing competition in which teams, grouped by country, compete in $5 million boats that race up to 60 miles per hour.

The competition was founded in 2018 by Larry Ellison, the tech billionaire, and Russell Coutts, a five-time America’s Cup winner, to build a mainstream sailing league. Unlike America’s Cup, which occurs roughly every four years, SailGP has events around the globe throughout the year, allowing audiences to follow along.

“It’s this high-adrenaline, high-speed sort of racing product right in front of you,” Mr. Coutts said.

A crowd of spectators sit together on a bunch of stands. Three people hold up white letters that say USA.

Organizers and fans are comparing the competition to Formula 1 racing on the water, which also has billionaire and celebrity backers and flashy backdrops including St. Tropez and Dubai. Now in its fourth season, the number of SailGP teams and events has doubled. The races, filled with Olympic sailors and state-of-the-art catamarans, are broadcast throughout the world and attract millions of viewers, according to organizers.

The sold-out race was held at the tip of Manhattan. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch the race by boat or from Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor. (Tickets started at $85 for the grandstand.)

A private tent on a paved area by the water was reserved for team owners and invited ticket holders. There was sushi and dumplings and tea service catered by the Plaza.

The teams were spread around the lounge, marked by flags. Lindsey Vonn, the Olympic ski racer, is on the board of directors for the team from the United States.

“I love speed and adrenaline, so when the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer,” Ms. Vonn said in a text message. She attended the race live on Saturday.

On Sunday, the races started around 1 p.m., prompting many guests to put down their champagne and Aperol spritzes and approach the edge of the water to take in the sailing.

Unlike in Formula 1, where a spectator can see only a short stretch of the track at a time, all of SailGP’s racing happens in a tight area in full view of the crowd.

The event is a series of three short races (each one lasts about 15 minutes) in which the boats circle the course multiple times, depending on the wind conditions.

For the boat to turn, 32 functions have to be performed by the team in unison. The catamarans are close enough to shore to see the sailors — there are usually six on each boat — in action.

Jennifer Falvey, 63, a real estate agent, had traveled from Woodstock, Vt., for the event after hearing it about it from a friend. “The boats are just so sexy,” she said.

Daniela Forte, who came with her husband from Westport, Conn., was struck by the speed.

“I don’t have a sailing background, and I had never heard of SailGP before this event, but it’s kind of an amazing idea,” she said. “Sailing has always felt like something you had to do, not just something you can watch, but this is amazing.”

An hour and a half after the first race started, the team from New Zealand was declared the winner (a television broadcaster announced: “The Kiwis have conquered Manhattan.”) The top three contenders are now New Zealand, Australia and Spain — ahead of the season finals in San Francisco in the middle of July.

Then sailors, still wet from the water, filled the lounge for “Apres Sail.” Hundreds of people remained in the private lounge for hours, snacking on fresh plates of pasta and freshly shucked oysters.

Despite the stifling, 90-degree temperatures the party continued until late afternoon. Dance music blared over the loudspeakers, fans mingled with the sailors, and at least one bar ran out of champagne.

Judge rules driver will stand trial in Swan Boat Club tragedy that left two siblings dead

beneteau yachts news

A judge ruled Thursday that Marshella Chidester will stand trial on eight charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, in the Swan Boat Club crash that killed two young siblings and injured about a dozen others.

Police say Chidester had a blood alcohol level of 0.18, more than twice the legal limit, when she plowed an SUV through the wall of a boat club in Newport during a 3-year-old's circus-themed birthday party on April 20. Chidester's lawyer has said his client's medical issues caused the crash.

An audible “yes” came from the courtroom benches where the loved ones of the siblings, Alanah and Zayn Phillips, sat as Judge Michael Brown bound over Chidester on the charges at the preliminary hearing in Monroe's district court.

The children's mother testified briefly, saying her oldest son was still recovering from the April crash in a hospital bed in her living room.

Mariah Dodds said she doesn’t remember anything from the crash, only distant voices she thinks might have been from her sister, niece and a friend.

The next thing she recalled was waking up in the hospital. She didn’t know how long she was unconscious or how long she had been hospitalized.

Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Steven Schmidt testified that a blood alcohol level of 0.17 and higher is considered high when making charging decisions. Drivers can't legally operate a vehicle if their blood alcohol content is 0.08 or higher.

Also found in Chidester’s blood was gabapentin, a medication used to prevent seizures, Schmidt testified.

Chidester suffers from neuropathy and "blacked out" from a seizure and had only one glass of wine that day, attorney Bill Colovos has said.

Colovos said Thursday his client did not cause the crash intentionally and questioned whether the blood taken from Chidester to measure her blood alcohol level was handled properly.

"Here's this person with a perfect record in 50 years, that all of the sudden is pushing it to floor to take off to go right to the boat club where she served as commodore, where she's going for the birthday party, where she knows everybody there — It just doesn't make sense," Colovos said of the second-degree murder charges.

Dodds testified that the 3-year-old being celebrated was her godson. She attended with her mother, her three children and her nephew.

When she read her children's names in court, Chidester's eyes filled with tears.

Dodds recounted her injuries, which included six broken ribs, a collapsed lung, broken shoulder blade and concussion.

Her now-12-year-old son was hospitalized for two weeks with injuries, including broken legs, broken ribs and a fractured skull.

In the deputy's body camera footage of the crash's aftermath played during the hearing, Chidester could be heard telling Schmidt: "I pulled into the parking lot and I was, I thought I was driving up to the boat club, and evidently I was driving right into the pavilion."

Chidester said she didn't remember anything once she got to the parking lot, telling Schmidt in the footage that she has seizures that could cause lapses in memory. The last seizure she had was in March, she said. Schmidt testified that Chidester said she was on her way to the boat club for a birthday party.

Schmidt asked her on tape how intoxicated she was, on a scale of 1 to 10. Chidester answered 7.

He then asked whether she should be driving.

"I wouldn't want to drive," Chidester responded.

Other footage shown in court showed the chaotic scene, including more body camera footage from first responders, surveillance videos and a cellphone video from a neighbor.

Video showed an SUV driving fast toward the boat club with no apparent attempt to stop as it plowed through the club’s wall. Then there were cries heard in the videos: “Oh my God, no! ... Everybody lift!” ... “Who is it?" ... "Who was in the car?”

Bodies of children and adults were seen scattered across the ground. Debris was everywhere. First responders and others at the party were shown tending to numerous victims, including a young boy who said he needed his mother.

And Chidester could also be seen in the footage, sitting in a chair.

Sgt. Michael Bomia of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office tended to Chidester on the scene, he testified Thursday.

Chidester said she was drinking wine about 30 minutes before the crash and also mentioned having a history of seizures, according to Bomia's body camera footage shown in court.

“I just, I passed out," she told Bomia in the video.

The high-profile case has been marked by public opinions surrounding Chidester's drinking habits. When Chidester was arraigned in court on April 23, three days after the tragedy, Dodds’ loved ones and community members interrupted Colovos numerous times with statements, including “she was drunk.”

And a group of victims including Dodds are suing in Monroe County Circuit Court both Chidester and Verna's Tavern, where Chidester had allegedly been drinking prior to the fatal crash. A family member of the bar's owner had told the Free Press that the woman only had one glass of wine at the business.

Diane Medina, a friend of Chidester's from the boat club, and someone she once vacationed with, was among the victims. She suffered three breaks in her pelvis, a broken nose, internal bleeding and a head injury.

Medina, 57, of Carleton, told the Free Press in April she couldn't wait to see her friend Chidester in court. On Thursday, she got her chance, testifying in wheelchair.

She looked at Chidester and held back tears. When she stated her name to the judge, her voice cracked.

Medina testified about what her recovery has looked like. She’s mostly bedridden, but can take small steps with a walker. She regular sees a physical therapist, psychologist and a speech therapist to help her find her words. She sometimes loses her train of thought as a result of the head injury she suffered.

They’re gonna need a bigger boat.

A couple lobster fishing off the coast of Massachusetts spotted five enormous sharks surrounding their boat — all frighteningly larger than the vessel itself.

Perry and Carmel Long were cruising in their 18-foot boat near Westport on June 9 when they spotted a 25-foot shark lurking below the ocean’s surface and began filming while discussing whether it might be a whale.

“Oh my God, that is a frickin’ shark!” Carmel Long can be heard yelling, as the shark’s fin pops out of the water.

Five more of the massive man-eaters — all roughly the same size — then appeared close to the boat for roughly 20 minutes, they told The Patriot Ledger .

“They were just swimming around us. They were inches away from our boat,” said Perry Long, adding they were likely plant-munching basking sharks.

The couple had been trying to catch lobsters in pots when they unwittingly sunk their teeth into the scary side of marine life.

“We have a recreational 10-pot lobster license, so my family and I for years now have put our pots out at the beginning of the summer season and go out every 3 to 5 days to check and see if we have any lobsters,” Perry Long told the outlet.

“We’ve seen some smaller sharks over the years further out but this was the first time we saw something like this,” he said.

Basking sharks, which can grow over 40 feet, feed exclusively zooplankton.

Boat Rocker Media Inc. has sold its stake in talent management company Untitled Entertainment LLC to TPG for approximately $51.6 million CAD.

Global investment firm TPG boasts entertainment investments including Calm, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), DirecTV, Entertainment Partners, Fandom, MusixMatch and Spotify. TPG’s new talent management company intends to acquire, invest in, and build a diversified global business centered on talent management, representation, and adjacent verticals.

“Collaborating with Untitled over the last five years has opened the door to strong partnerships and talent relationships,” said Boat Rocker’s Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier. “This exciting new opportunity to carry on doing business with Untitled, as well as partner with world-class investor TPG, enables us to maintain our ties to the representation space while we focus on our core business: owned IP. Through our partnership with the company, we’re also delighted to continue working with Michel and Eric, two extremely capable individuals who possess a deep understanding of the talent management business. Given continued uncertainty in the market, we believe more strongly than ever that using our capital and corporate resources to maximize control over our destiny and provide the most flexibility in our IP strategy is the best path forward.”

TPG Growth is funding the investment. LionTree Advisors acted as financial advisor and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and Stikeman Elliott LLP served as legal advisors to Boat Rocker on the transaction.

Ben affleck moved all his belongings out of mansion shared with jennifer lopez while she was in europe: report.

Ben Affleck has reportedly moved all of his belongings out of the Los Angeles estate he shares with his wife , Jennifer Lopez.

The actor took his things while the singer was in Europe, a source told People on Friday.

Lopez was in Italy last week, where she was photographed enjoying a boat day in Positano with some friends.

The following day, paparazzi caught the actress taking selfies aboard another vessel — seemingly alone.

Ben Affleck

“Ben continues to live at the Brentwood rental. He’s been there for about two months now,” a second source told People.

“He seems OK. He’s been at his office every day and seems focused on work. He’s also spending time with his kids.”

His reps did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

The director shares Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

Ben Affleck

Upon returning from her vacation, Lopez, 54, was snapped visiting Affleck’s West Hollywood office .

Though the Grammy winner has been sporting her engagement ring and wedding band, Affleck, 51, has been seen without the symbolic jewelry on a number of occasions in recent weeks.

Amid mounting rumors of marital woes, the couple are reportedly  selling the $60 million Beverly Hills mansion  they bought just last May.

“Jenny has had enough, and she really tried, but she  can do no more ,” an insider told the Daily Mail last week, claiming that the pair’s marriage is “not getting any better; it’s worse.”

The songstress is now apparently “trying to make the best” of her time by focusing on her twins, Max and Emme, 16 — whom she shares with her ex-husband Marc Anthony — and her career goals for 2025.

Another source close to Lopez admitted that Affleck “can be grumpy and a downer” but made sure to note he’s “a wonderful father.”

Earlier this month, an insider told “Entertainment Tonight” that the duo  have “been living separate lives”  but are “not officially separated yet.”

“At this point, they are just doing their own thing,” the insider explained. “They went into their relationship very optimistic and thought things could change, but they haven’t.”

While the Oscar winner has reportedly been staying at a rental property in Brentwood, Lopez has apparently been “touring houses and shopping around for her own home.”

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's Beverly Hills home

“Ben is sad about it all but focused on his work, being a great dad and co-parenting well with Jennifer Garner,” the insider said.

A source previously told Page Six that Affleck had  “come to his senses”  about his two-year “fever dream” marriage to Lopez.

“If there was a way to divorce on grounds of temporary insanity, he would,” our source insisted.

The stars, who  called off their engagement  in 2004 before reconciling in 2021,  married in Las Vegas  in July 2022.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Exterior design

The First 53 is a happy mix of classic and modern lines. With a straight slender bow providing plenty of forward space, and a 5-metre maximum beam further aft, she immediately stands out for her sturdy seaworthy looks. The cockpit has been studied in detail to ensure nothing can obstruct forward movement: manoeuvring close-hauled from the twin helm stations with easy access to the side decks, space given over completely to relaxation near the companionway. With a flush deck, low coachroof and a sleek modern look, she has all the virtues of a thoroughbred. The First 53 marks a new era with a top quality mast and high-end deck gear and a powerful sail plan that is easily controlled by a shorthanded crew.

Interior Design

Moulded wood has made a comeback in the interior of the First 53. This noble material with polished finishes contrasts with a modern almost minimalist décor of lacquered white bulkheads with a teak sole. There are lots of fiddles and hand rails, as well as plenty of storage indoors, where three double cabins and two heads make up the accommodation. The major innovation in the interior has been separating the lounge/relaxation area, with a sofa and coffee table, and the galley space with a dinner table. The result is bright, well-ventilated and it communicates well with the exterior by an easy and intuitive companionway.

Enjoying the Sea Close Up

A First in every detail, the First 53 meets a detailed set of specifications, the goal of which is to make it a new gold standard in fast luxurious cruising. She took two years to develop and bring excellence closer to water level, meeting the requirements of highly demanding owners in terms of thrills at the helm, speed and life on board at anchor.

beneteau yachts news

The First 53 matches new sailing requirements with a completely new interior housing a large sofa and coffee table and divided into two very distinct and practical spaces: a relaxation area and a meal space.

The designer Lorenzo Argento focussed on easy-flow and movement between the helm stations, and on winch layout for manoeuvres and easy access to the deck. Behind the lifting transom, which converts to a swim platform, you can easily stow away a 2.40 m (8’) tender in the tender garage.

Sensations dans thrills

To achieve maximum thrills at the helm, we focused on balancing weight and balance under sail when we designed the boat. For example, the centre of buoyancy is aligned on the centre of effort. Boasting a straight bow making her more spacious, as well as a maximum beam further aft, a 2.5 m or 3 m draught (with lead bulb), with twin rudders to control her highly responsive hull perfectly, the First 53 has the competitive advantage of a hull that clocks up miles quickly.

A connected boat

The mobile application, Seanapps , and its onboard unit lets you view the status of the boat's various systems (battery charge, fuel or water tank levels, maintenance scheduling) via your smartphone, as well as planning your route or reviewing your sailing status using your mobile phone.
