How To Replace a Lost RYA Certificate

lost powerboat level 2 certificate

At Ocean Sports Tuition, our instructors have been delivering high quality RYA courses to candidates since 2004. As a result, we know that one of the most frustrating things can be to misplace or damage one of your well-earned certificates, especially when you need it as proof of competence for an upcoming course or activity! With this in mind, we’ve put together this easy-to-follow step by step guide on how to replace your certificate if it goes missing.

To locate your records in order to issue a new certificate, you’ll need to send an email to  [email protected]  with the following details:

  • Date of birth
  • Previous known addresses
  • Name of school who issued the certificate
  • Name of course

If the RYA can locate your details, you will be sent a replacement form to complete, and your replacement certificate will be issued and sent to you.

What if the RYA Can’t Find My Details?

In some cases, the RYA will be unable to match your records with a certificate, which can delay the replacement process. If you receive a response from the RYA detailing that your records were not found, simply get in touch with our team by emailing  [email protected]  or calling 02381 242 159 (or contact the school which issued your certificate) and ask for a confirmation letter to verify that you have completed this course. You can then send this confirmation letter back to the RYA, and a replacement certificate form will be sent to you to complete.

How Much Does a Replacement RYA Certificate Cost?

All replacement certificates with a photo are charged at £25, with shore-based certificate replacements costing £20 to replace.

How Long will a Replacement Certificate Take to Arrive?

Once you have completed and sent off your replacement certificate form, you should allow 21 working days for your new certificate to arrive. However, if you need a replacement more urgently, a Fast Track service may be available for an additional cost. If you are looking for a Fast Track replacement, we recommend that you state this in your initial email to the RYA.

The RYA Powerboat scheme that we specialise in teaching has a series of logical steps or building blocks to it. However, when you start looking at the powerboat training courses that are available it can sometimes be unclear what you need to do. Here we will explain to you the benefits of doing each course so you can decide how far you want to take your training. You can click on any of the icons on this page and get the specific details of each course we offer.

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Powerboat Level 2

The RYA powerboat training courses start with the Powerboat Level 2 course. There is a Level 1 course but this is really designed for children. It doesn’t get you a licence and just increases your costs. We don’t offer it.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two day course. Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued a UK licence to drive powerboats up to 10 metres in length. That’s a pretty big boat after just two days on the water!

During the course we will cover all the basics of seamanship and basic boat handling. We will teach you how to manoeuvre in the wind and tide and show you how to do various tasks. These will include anchoring, picking up a mooring buy for a lunch stop, recovering a person from the water and safe high speed driving and cornering. We also include a free VHF course. Not a bad bundle for £325 ?

The Powerboat licence can, if you wish, be converted into an ICC. That’s an International Certificate of Competence. This licence will allow you to drive powerboats while on holiday in the sun. Living the dream! In order to do this you simply need to send a form and a passport photo off to the RYA and for the princely sum of £45 they will issue your international licence. Alternatively, if you join the RYA for 1 year, they will issue the licence for free. Bargain!

Bear in mind though, most reputable places abroad will require you to have a VHF radio licence in order to legally charter a boat while you’re on holiday. That’s why we include it for free?️

Level 2 powerboat training courses

RYA Essential Navigation

An extremely sensible add on to the Powerboat Level 2 course is the Essential Navigation classroom course. At £125 it’s not an expensive course but it does mean another weekend training. The benefit of this is the safety knowledge it gives you to take on the water when you go boating.

A bit like the highway code for boats it will teach you how to interpret the maps, to avoid getting caught out by the tide and how to avoid hazards and plan a safe day on the water.

Most students tend to stop at this point to be honest. They have a ICC and a VHF radio licence so they can hire a boat on holiday. They also have just enough knowledge to be sensible and stay safe on the water. So at this point we have done enough high quality training for them to have the confidence they need as well as the skills.

Powerboat IRPCS Revision Sheet

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Training Courses

The intermediate powerboat training course is the next step in the journey. Again, it’s a two day course and people come back to it at different times. It’s an excellent course to do as we go off visiting new places. You will make a plan to enter a different harbour and then follow the plan on the water.

The intermediate powerboat training course teaches you to go further afield on even bigger adventures. That’s why people come back to it at different times. It depends how much boating you do after your Powerboat Level 2 course but eventually you will want to visit more places. It’s part of getting the best out of your new hobby. ?

Rather than focusing on boat handling, although this is still included, we will teach you to plan a coastal passage. From our base in Poole Harbour, this could mean navigating to a secluded cove on the Jurassic Coast. Visiting Christchurch for lunch at the Captain’s Club. Or a gentle river trip to a country village.

Day Skipper Theory

The Day Skipper theory course is a thorough navigation course that will give you the knowledge to plan coastal passages and keep everybody safe too.

This course has a minimum of 40 hours classroom time. During the course we will teach you:

  • Position fixing and GPS navigation
  • Rules of the road
  • Weather forecasting
  • How to get into new harbours
  • Tidal calculations
  • Emergency and safety procedures

Day Skipper IRPCS Revision Sheet

Take Things Pro With These Powerboat Training Courses

After the intermediate course there are a range of courses and exams required so that you can go pro. Lets explore these options in more detail.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Course

Yachtmaster Theory and the Advanced Powerboat Course

The Advanced powerboat course is required training in order to take the commercial skipper exam. During the course we will take you out in the dead of night and teach you to navigate by the lights. You will be trained to the point that you can stop the boat in the middle of the ocean within 5 metres of an unmarked position. It’s pretty cool stuff.

In order to gain the knowledge and be capable to pass the course you will have to have recorded between 400 and 800 miles of experience on the water. You will also need to pass the Yachtmaster theory course to give you the knowledge needed at a professional level.

This is also a two day course but you can expect a very late night. We will teach you how to conduct search patterns, give safety briefs and give you the tools to take paying passengers to sea.

The Advanced Powerboat Exam

The advanced exam is conducted by an independent examiner from the RYA. He will expect you to have a thorough knowledge of everything in the syllabus and be a capable boat handler.

Successful completion of this exam will qualify you to drive power driven vessels, up to 24 metres in length, as a commercial skipper. ?️

Become an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Instructor

This is probably one of the most awesome ways to earn extra pennies there is. It’s also not that hard to achieve which is the good news.

In order to be eligible to become an instructor you need to hold a Level 2 certificate and have three seasons experience of driving powerboats. Having said that, if you drive boats as part of your job, this is cut down to one season.

If you meet that criteria you can attend a skills assessment day with an independent powerboat trainer. If you make the grade then you can attend the week long instructor course. During the course you will learn how t structure and deliver an RYA powerboat level 2 course. On a successful pass you can then teach the course. We pay £100 per day for powerboat instructors. Not bad over a two day course program. ?

Intermediate and Advanced Powerboat Instructor

To be able to teach at the top level of the powerboat scheme you have to have been a powerboat level 2 instructor for at least a year. You also have to hold the advanced course certificate and the COC exam qualification.

If you do then it’s the same again. Attend an instructor course conducted by an RYA trainer. If your successful you can then teach people to go further afield and take them on adventures in the dark.

However far you decide to take your hobby or professional qualifications, we have the right powerboat training courses and the right attitude to your learning. We will work with you and get you where you want to be. Wherever that may be. ?????

The Powerboat Level 2 certificate is a national qualification that covers the basics of powerboating. The ICC is an internationally recognised certificate that is often required for boaters wishing to operate vessels in foreign waters. The Powerboat Level 2 certificate can be used to apply for an ICC.

34. How do I apply for an ICC after completing the Powerboat Level 2 course?

After completing the Powerboat Level 2 course, you can apply for an ICC through the RYA (Royal Yachting Association). You will need to provide proof of your Powerboat Level 2 certification.

35. Can I use my Powerboat Level 2 certification for commercial purposes?

The Powerboat Level 2 certification is primarily for recreational use. For commercial operations, you may need to obtain additional qualifications such as the RYA Commercial Endorsement, which includes further training and assessments.

36. Are there any night navigation skills taught in the Powerboat Level 2 course?

Basic night navigation is not typically covered in the Powerboat Level 2 course. For night navigation skills, you should consider taking the Advanced Powerboat Course, which includes training for operating in low-light conditions.

37. How physically demanding is the Powerboat Level 2 course?

The Powerboat Level 2 course is not overly physically demanding, but it does require a basic level of fitness to handle the boat and participate in practical drills. You should be comfortable with physical activities such as moving around the boat and handling lines.

38. Can I upgrade my Powerboat Level 2 certification?

Yes, after gaining experience and additional training, you can upgrade to higher qualifications such as the Advanced Powerboat Certificate or RYA Yachtmaster, which allow you to handle more complex boating scenarios and larger vessels.

You must log in to your personal MyRYA account to apply or renew an ICC.

If you’re looking to operate a pleasure craft or hire a boat outside the UK and need to evidence your competence, then the UK International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (the ICC) issued by the RYA, may be useful.

What is the ICC?

The ICC is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in a country you are visiting (i.e. a country you are not a citizen or a resident of).

It’s an assurance from one government to another that the certificate holder is sufficiently competent to be operating a pleasure craft, despite not holding the visited country’s certificate.

Is the ICC for me?

When you visit another country, in most circumstances (in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) you can be required to comply with the maritime legislation of the visited country (the Coastal State) in addition to that of your vessel’s country of registration.

To know whether the ICC is the right document for your circumstances you need to consider the applicable legislation.

Find out more about applicable legislation and flag and coastal states .

What is Resolution No. 40 and why is it important?

The ICC was developed under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution No. 40, the UK Government has accepted Resolution No. 40 and has authorised the RYA to issue a UK ICC on its behalf.

Resolution No. 40 details how and to who the ICC may be issued, the syllabus requirements and the layout of the certificate. The Resolution also lists the countries which have notified the UNECE Secretariat that they have accepted the resolution.

your ICC questions answered

Eligibility - nationality based criteria

I’m British. Can I get a UK ICC from the RYA?

Yes. You’ll need to provide a copy of a document or a combination of documents with your ICC application, which allow the RYA to verify your nationality. This will usually be a copy of your passport.

Find out more

I’m a citizen of a country that has accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA will only issue you with an ICC if you are resident in the UK.

I’m a citizen of a country, other than the UK, that has not accepted Resolution 40. Can the RYA issue me with an ICC?

The RYA can issue you with an ICC. However, if the country you are a national of accepts Resolution No. 40 in the future you will not be able to amend or renew your ICC. You must return the certificate to the RYA and you will not be entitled to any refund. You may wish to find out if the country you are citizen of intends to accept the ICC in the future.

Eligibility - competence based criteria

I’ve been boating for a long time but have never taken any formal courses. Can I get a UK ICC issued by the RYA?

Applicants for the UK ICC issued by the RYA, who do not hold an eligible certificate but already have the required level of competence can take ICC assessments to demonstrate their competence for each of the categories they would like to have validated on their ICC.

Read our detailed information on how to evidence your boating competence for the issue of a UK ICC.

I only have a shorebased course completion certificate, I didn’t take a practical course. Can I still apply for a UK ICC from the RYA?

To be issued with a UK ICC by the RYA you must provide evidence of your competence for both the type of vessel categories you would like to be validated on your certificate and the coastal waters and / or inland waters category.

An RYA Day Skipper Shorebased or higher Course Completion Certificate can be used to validate the coastal waters category only. A shorebased certificate on its own is not sufficient. You must also provide evidence of your competence for at least one of the type of vessel categories.

Can I covert non-RYA qualifications into an ICC?

In general, non RYA certificates cannot be used to evidence your competence for the issue of a UK ICC by the RYA. Some certificates issued for or on behalf of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) can be used in an ICC application as evidence of competence.

Application process for UK ICC

Can my ICC be sent to an alternative address?

No, your ICC must be sent to the address you give on your application form which is the address printed on the certificate.

I’ve downloaded the pdf application form and I’m applying by post. Do I send original documents to support my application or are copies sufficient?

Please DO NOT send original documents.

You should send copies only of your passport, driving licence and any other certificates or documents you need in support of your application.

Please refer to our information on where might the ICC be accepted.

Can I renew my ICC if it has expired?

Yes, expired certificates, issued on or after 1 April 1999 can be renewed. Certificates issued prior to 1st April 1999 were not issued in accordance with Resolution No. 40 and cannot be renewed.

Apply now for your ICC renewal

Can I renew early?

Yes. If you renew your ICC no more than three months before the certificate expires, the new certificate will have a validity of 5 years from the date the previous ICC would have expired. You can renew your ICC earlier than that, but it will only be valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

How do I apply for a replacement ICC?

If your ICC is still current and you require a replacement then you will be required to complete the ICC application form and submit as a replacement request.

The replacement is free of charge to current members or the cost for non-members can be found on the form. The expiry date will remain the same.

How do I change the address on my ICC?

You will be required to complete the ICC application form and tick the box for updating details.

This update is free of charge to current members or the cost for non-members can be found on the form. The expiry date will remain the same.

I have Power Yes on my Certificate, what does this mean?

Sometimes an ICC is issued with the validity for Power restricted to vessels up to 10m in length.

Where the applicant has demonstrated that they are competent to drive a larger powerboat, motor cruiser or barge, the 10m restriction is lifted and the ICC says Power - Yes.

What vessels that ICC is valid for is determined by the legislation of the flag and coastal states.
