Review of Oyster 68

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 1314.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Oyster 68 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.72 - 2.82 meter (8.92 - 9.22 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Oyster 68 is 1.57, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 9.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Oyster 68 is about 574 kg/cm, alternatively 3218 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 574 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 3218 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

The l/b ratio for Oyster 68 is 3.91.

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 16.05

Sorry, we do not have sufficient statistical information available for this boat to provide a significant reliable analysis.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 98m 2 (1054 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

For Sale: Sirena 68

  • By Jake Lamb
  • August 27, 2024

Sirena 68

“The Sirena Yachts 68 is an immensely practical semi-displacement cruiser,” Yachting previously wrote. “The hull is based on the Sirena 64, which debuted in 2017, and is an evolution that goes far beyond the extra few feet of length that have been added toward the stern.”

Allied Marine currently has a 2023 Sirena 68 called My Lady Y listed for just shy of $3 million. The Florida-based flybridge motoryacht features an optional four-stateroom layout and comfortable amenities inside and out.

Sirena 68

“The My Lady Y stands as the epitome of upgraded elegance in the market,” Allied Marine says. “Distinguished by its sleek design and unique ax bow shape, it outshines other boats in the 60- to 70-foot range.”

The foredeck offers two different lounge areas, the U-shaped settee and fixed table aft and the sun pad forward. If the sun is too harsh, there is a sun shade that can cover the entire space.

The cockpit is fully covered by the flybridge overhang so owners and their guests can enjoy a shaded alfresco dining experience at the fixed table and transom bench seat aft. Pull up a few chairs to fit as many as eight.

Sirena 68

The flybridge has two distinct sections, the forward portion that is covered by the hardtop and the aft, open-air section that has a two-stool bar as the divider amidships. Seating on the flybridge includes two U-shaped settees, one forward to port and one abaft the upper helm to starboard.

Sirena offers two different interior arrangements for the 68, with the variation being if the interior dining is forward to port, abaft the lower helm station, or to starboard and adjacent to the galley aft. My Lady Y has the aft dining configuration, making it a very entertainment-friendly motoryacht.

After a fun day on the water, owners and their guests can head belowdecks to enjoy one of four staterooms. Amidships, the full-beam master stateroom has a centerline berth, a desk space to port that sits beneath a hullside window that stretches nearly the length of the room, walk-in closet stowage and an en suite head. The forepeak VIP has a centerline berth, a desk area that sits beneath the built-in flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The optional starboard guest cabin has the bunk berth layout while the port guest cabin has side-by-side convertible single berths.

Sirena 68

“The goal of the Sirena 68 hull design was to offer efficiency at speeds ranging from long-range cruising to planning,” Sirena Yachts says. “A slippery hull with minimal appendage drag gave the range numbers we were looking for, while optional power choices increase the top end.”

Twin low-hour (289) 1,000 hp Volvo D-13 diesels give My Lady Y a 26-knot top hop and a fast cruise of 16 knots. Cruising at 16 knots will give the 68-footer a range of 400 nautical miles. Slowing to 8.5 knots increases the maximum range to 1,150 nm.

Some other notable features on board My Lady Y include:

  • Seakeeper gyrstabilizer
  • Humphrey stabilizers
  • Bow and stern thrusters
  • Garmin Diamond package
  • Washer and dryer combo

Where is My Lady Y located? The yacht is currently lying in Aventura, Florida.

Onboard the Divine 595, the World is Your Oyster

Oyster 595

Let’s just say I was feeling on top of the world. It was a lazy Saturday afternoon early this past September on the Solent—the historical straight off the south coast of England that lies between mainland United Kingdom and the Isle of Wight—and I felt right at home, styling at the helm of the new Oyster 595, freshly launched from the company’s shipyard in Wroxham.

The gleaming yacht —a word I do not freely bandy about, but this glamorous steed was far beyond your basic “sailboat”—cleaved through the light chop effortlessly, gliding upwind at 8 knots in precisely the same amount of breeze. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed many a lucky trick at many a lovely wheel, moments I’d wished could be frozen in time, and this was yet another one. This Oyster is a vessel that should, can and will taste far-reaching waters all over the globe, and do so with power and panache.

And frankly, it damn well should.

We’ll get this over with straightaway. For all its magnificence—and that’s the surefire correct adjective for this Rob Humphreys-designed stunner—the 595 will set back its well-heeled owners more than $3 million, which means, I might know how to drive one, but I surely will never own one. But the Oyster 595, perhaps more to the point, has a lot to say not only about contemporary, state-of-the-art, high-end production boatbuilding—and boat buying—but also the broader seascape as the marine industry slowly emerges from what is hopefully the worst of the pandemic.

RELATED: Oyster 745 Review

Consider this: Our lovely test sail was conducted on Hull No. 1 of the 595, for which 16 units have already been sold… sight unseen ! (Never mind sails unfurled.) Down the road from Southampton, in the seaside village of Hythe, an entirely new factory is being tricked out to build the next Oyster up in the line, the 495; no fewer than 10 orders have been placed for that boat, and the very first one is still under construction ! Order books are now full a couple of years down the road, and this is by no means a success story that Oyster alone is enjoying. From Southampton, I made my way across the English Channel to France for this year’s edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, and the story was repeated time and time again from nearly all the world’s top builders (Swan, Contest, Grand Soleil, HH Catamarans, etc.). Order books for seemingly all the major players are full now through 2023 (at the very least), many for models that do not yet exist beyond design renderings and brochures.

saloon

And this at least partially explains the dearth of new offerings from the perennial leading midsize, midlevel, full-on production yards as well, like Hanse and Beneteau. Who has time for innovative R&D when it’s taking all hands on deck to fulfill the long list of vessels already committed to?

What in the name of L. Francis Herreshoff is going on? The answer is both simple and complicated. Of the many surprises unleashed by the pandemic, surely one of the least predictable was many folks’ discovery (or rediscovery) of sailing. Yacht brokers reveled in one of their best years ever in 2020, to the point that the used-boat market has been ravished. But the pent-up demand has not abated, and now the new-boat market is on fire as well. It’s anybody’s guess how long this will last, but for the builders in the midst of this frenzy—such as Oyster—there’s no time to ponder it anyway. Their biggest problem —again, almost universal—is finding the armies of skilled labor necessary to produce what’s already been signed and sealed but not delivered.

Yet, I digress. Back to that remarkable Oyster.

Many of the boats rolling off the line these days are destined for one of the next two Oyster World Rallies; the 2022-2023 edition, capped at 30 boats, is sold out, and there’s no real question that the following one, in 2024-2025, will be as well. Value-added propositions are not unique to Oyster—Swan is also a seasoned master at organizing owner events—but they speak to the level of customer service and care that you also purchase with the boat. Why just build them when you can launch them on a fabulous jaunt around the planet with like-minded souls? Oyster reps speak of their customers as “family” and then back it up. The company is also in the midst of launching a proprietary system called Guardian Angel that monitors their yachts’ systems remotely, wherever they are, and also provides the ability to seek long-distance assistance or advice at the push of a touchscreen button. How much would you be willing to pay for such peace of mind?

The 595 is a striking yacht, with that signature cat’s-eye coachroof; a razor-sharp sheerline; an expansive cockpit and foredeck; maximized waterline with plumb bow; and all of it balanced by those twin helms at one end and an integral, smart sprit/ground-tackle arrangement at the other. It all looks powerful, and is. There are two keel options: a standard foil, which was on the boat I sailed, or a centerboard (of the 16 ordered so far, just three are going out the door with the latter). The transom is a work of art unto itself, with a sensational boarding platform that is basically a back porch, and even a retractable, telescoping passerelle when swanning about the Med. I do go back and forth on hull windows, often depending on whether I’m on or off a boat at the time. To my eye, the half-dozen vertical windows to each side do detract from the yacht’s grandeur, but I sure do appreciate all the natural light and tasty views when I’m nestled aboard. OK, we’ll keep them.

Oyster stateroom

Space will limit me from going on and on, which I’d otherwise be very happy to do. But the big things are kind of obvious on the 595 (the massive sail plan, for instance, tamed by a hydraulic vang and furlers, electric winches and an in-mast furling mainsail with excellent vertical battens). Which makes the (relatively not-so) little things stand out more. Even under power, the boat is one of the quietest I’ve ever experienced; the engine-room insulation is astounding, and when gliding upwind under sail, nary a creak or groan is to be heard. Raise the floorboards and gaze upon as well-executed a plumbing and manifold arrangement as you’ll ever see, all serviced by just a pair of massive raw-water intake valves to port and starboard. This is maintenance access to die for.

There are, of course, multiple interior layouts and floor plans possible, with furniture and cabinetry exquisitely rendered in your choice of cherry, maple and oak (big oak guy here…for me, light is right). Check out the Oyster website and prepare to linger a while.

Back at the helm, enjoying myself immensely, I was tempted when passing all the other boats (and we were always passing them) to offer them that little Queen Elizabeth half-wave thingy that she does so well. I couldn’t help it. Steering the Oyster 595 made me feel royal.

Herb McCormick is CW ’s executive editor.

Video: onboard the new Oyster 595

  • November 4, 2021

Oyster’s latest launch, the Oyster 595, is its fastest selling model of all time as owners flock to ‘seize the day’. An overnight test proves the ideal chance to find out why

Your world becomes a very small place when the ease and convenience of travel is lost, a notion that has really hit home in the last couple of year, However, if uptake of the new Oyster 595 is anything to go by, many sailors are looking to set off to see a bit more of the world in the coming years.

The pandemic has forced us to look at our lives introspectively and what we want to get out of them. It seems for many it has forced the question, ‘why delay casting off’?

It’s evident that an increasing number of owners are not only impatient to set off, but they want to do so in the most comfort possible. That 16 deposits were placed on this £2.5m yacht before the first build was even finished is quite staggering. The new Oyster 595 is the fastest selling Oyster model to date and the British brand has clearly unveiled the right product at the right time.

The Oyster 595 is about as high-end luxury you can go before entering a custom, crewed or superyacht level. From the contemporary yet practical deck and interior layout, to the engineering, electronics and joiner work, the finish is as good as it gets.

There is stiff competition in the 55-60ft luxury sector, but the phenomenal pre-sales of the Oyster 595 suggests it’s not just about the boat but the wish to join the brand: the Oyster experience. The Oyster World Rally shows there’s a growing desire to cruise the world in the largest manageable sized yacht in the most comfort with renowned support.

Given the choice, I’d still opt for the 565 for its slightly more manageable size and rewarding sailing experience. However, I appreciate that extra waterline length generates additional speed and the additional volume and entertaining space will make a larger difference to others.

For those owners who want a crew either permanently or to help with deliveries, that added space in the third guest cabin will be valuable.

Finally, apologies to anyone whose hopes we may have raised for owning one – unless you’re happy to wait another three years, of course. Seize the day indeed!

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  7. Review of Oyster 68

The Oyster 68 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel. The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.72 - 2.82 meter (8.92 - 9.22 ft) dependent on the load.
