Designer in Profile: Marco Lostuzzi, Designer of Cantiere del Pardo

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc). I completed my A-level as a shipbuilder in the naval technical college of Trieste Italy. Later I was part of the military service in the Naval Academy in Livorno. After that I moved to the Southampton Institute of Higher Education to degree as an engineer in “Yacht and powerboat design” and finally I did the Master of science degree at the University of Southampton, UK. As  work experience after the university degree I worked in a couple of design offices in Italy. The first one was for one year on ship design and the second was for three years in sailboat design. After those experiences in the 1997 I opened my own design studio and since then we have worked on 93 projects of which 29 are fully designed yachts and the others are refitting or some part of more complex design. Other very important experience comes from the sport of sailing which I started very young and I still carry on.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? I feel that the design is moving toward producing more user friendly goods, items that assist the user, for example yachts are now much easier to use, sails are easier to hoist and manoeuvre, majority of deck gear can be powered by electric motors and there are already systems in place to automatically control them. Moring can be very easy now with docking systems which control bow and stern thrusters.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2018 and beyond. – Easy sailing – Performance – Aesthetic – Comfort – Ergonomics

Where do you feel yacht and aviation design is going in terms of schemes? I feel that designers will focus on designs that are more and more enjoyable through the ease of use and the comfort.

What projects are you currently working on? Currently I am busy with the projects of two sailing yachts, the GS 48’ which is a racer/cruiser with high racing ambitions and the GS 68’ which is a large semicustom performance yacht.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Start a new design understanding very well the scope of the design and what will be its real use. It will make it much simpler to take all the decisions later.

What products/services could you not live without when designing?

I make large use of parametric 3D cad software, it helps me to visualise what I am designing very fast and at the same time it is easy to modify and try different solutions.

How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? Very important since it is an International award focussed on design which make it a unique opportunity to show our work.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

One is to help the customers of the new design, the GS 48’, to reach our common goal to win sailing races. Another one is to start a research on a new hull form for sailing yachts to provide even more interior volume without scarifying the seaworthiness and performance.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself:

Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Cruising in Croatia.

Your most treasured possession? My daughters.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant and bar? I don’t have a particular hotel in mind. A restaurant has to have good food and a bar has to be enjoyed with good friends.

Your favourite food and drink? There are so many, but in particular Sicilian and Tuscany food and good wines.

The place that enables you to totally relax? Running in the countryside.

The place that gives you most inspiration? Exhibition of impressionism paintings.

Any final thoughts? I love design and research.

HARMONIOUS PERFORMANCE

Live the innovation.

The Grand Soleil 48 is born from the cooperation between the prestigious Nauta Yacht Design team, the naval architect Marco Lostuzzi and Cantiere del Pardo’s Technical Dept. Their expertise resulted in an important Made-in-Italy project: a real revolution in the 50-feet sailing market.

GS 48 PERFORMANCE: COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE COME FIRST

This version of GS 48 combines comfort, quality and performance thanks to avant-garde and first-class technologies: the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the hull and the attachments and the FEM structural analysis for all the structures guarantee a fast, light and rigid boat. Interiors and the deck design bear the signature of Nauta Design and Cantiere del Pardo Design Team.

GS 48 RACE: THE SPORT RACING SIDE OF THE PERFORMANCE RANGE

In the “Race” version, thanks to the fully equipped and well-positioned deck, competing has never been so exciting. The interiors follow the same philosophy: it is possible to disassemble various parts. Doing so, the boat becomes lighter and the sails can occupy many wide spaces without damaging the furniture.

42′ Fun SLYYACHT

Exterior design: pastrovich studio interior design: pastrovich studio naval architecture: studio lostuzzi shipyard: sly yacht.

The conformation of this boat’s aft cockpit lets everyone express himself in his favourite way and enjoying his holiday. Stefano Pastrovich

studio lostuzzi yacht design

The idea of 42 Fun follows a very clear choice of design: managing the space to give the maximum comfort . The yact has a fast hull, supported by an easy-to-use rigging system, a self-rolling mainsail boom to maintain the battens and self-tacking jib. A deck layout that makes the most of the external space and an open space inside. … Read More

studio lostuzzi yacht design

On the external deck , the different spaces have been integrated without creating interference during sail. With this goal in mind, the work area has the winches positioned between the wheels and the seats, so they can be manoeuvered without disturbing guests. As well as that, the winches are operated standing up protected by the deck house side bulwark.

The plan shape of the deck house is a pronounced arrow shape, narrow at the bow and wide in the stern so as to widen the space between the outside sofas and at the same time, make the look of the deck house more aggressive.

studio lostuzzi yacht design

Widening the arrow-shaped deck house like this, in the outside seating area, I replaced the classic central table with two lateral tables which can be lifted up and down, so there is always room to walk around the center of the boat. The L-shaped sofas facilitate conversation between people as the position of the sofas at home. The tables can then lowered to the level of the benches to form wide sofa. Having positioned two tables, one can be used for drinks and the other one, lowered to stretch out in comfort. All these configurations still leave the central longitudinal passage for going down into the cabin. If we have lots of friends to dinner, the two tables can fit together so eight people can eat in comfort.

An outside fridge is positioned on the starboard side of the deck house before the entry to the lower deck, easily accessible to a person seated outside. Towards evening, the sun begins to cool, leaving the stage to the aperitif; people chat, joke and enjoy the view. Everyone has their own way of relaxing; some sitting down, some stretched out on a sofa, some standing up and others with their feet up, sitting on the open stern transom.

SATURA STUDIO

YACHT & DESIGN

“SaturaStudio” is a young designers team founded in 2018 by Alberto Frulla , Federica Fino and Francesco Viola . The partenership started during the master in “Yacht Design” at the University of Genova and Politecnico of Milano where they won the MYDA award in the “New Project” category with “M/Y Tuxedo”. The team’s work is focused on “Yacht Design” and “Interior Design” and involves the whole design process, from the concept to the costruction. STS develops tailor-made design projects for new construction and refitt, from 5 to 50 meters.

The team’s purpose is to build a close connection with the customer trying to understand his tastes, his needs and his passions and involving him in the design process from the first sketches to the final proposal. The experimentation through digital technologies such as aumented reality and 3d printing allows to increase the customer experience and to offer innovative and interesting design solutions. Our goal is to connect the inspiration that comes from different scenarios like art, nature, sea, fas hion and car design to the functionality of the product making a connection between interior space and exterior line that can be the perfect balance between aesthetic and functionality. SaturaStudio team up with well-known Italian Shipyards such as Cantiere del Pardo, Cayman Yachts, Lusben Benetti, Scanner Marine and Tornado Yachts as well as International Shipyards and brokers such as Portofino Marine and Floating Life International. STS design is the finest compromise between shape, function and feelings.

ivic plaza includes 10m high ceremonial stairs (leading from embankment and pedestrian Bagration Bridge to the higher terraced levels) as well as landscaped areas with green lawns, trees, water features, travellators and feature lightboxes.

Evolution Tower

Location: Moscow, Russia

Typology: High-Rise, Office, Mixed-Use

Years: Construction 2011-2014

Status: Built

Height: 246m

Design team: GORPROJECT  (2011-2015),

RMJM Scotland Ltd

(original concept 2005-2007)

Under the piazza levels the 2-storey retail mall connects the Evolution Tower with metro station and pedestrian bridge over Moscow river, thus integrating the new development into the large Moscow-City district, the Europe's newest and most ambitious high-rise cluster (7 of 10 highest European skyscrapers ae located here), housing over 4 million square meters of office and retail areas with associated transport and engineering infrastructure.

The Evolution Gallery mall houses food court and 6,000m2 family entertainment and educational center for various children activities (the first center of that kind in Moscow).

The 82,000m2 office tower has 52 levels rotated 3 degrees each floor with overall twist reaching 156 degrees clockwise. With world’s largest innovative cold-bent glazing the tower façade provides seamless floating reflection that rotates the panoramas of Moscow skyline vertically, where the reflected clouds moving up enhance the dynamic visual impact of the twisted tower, an unprecedented optical effect in the world architecture.  The Crown with supporting steel structure made of two twisted arches provides the helipad at the very top as well as the open observation roof decks at Levels 51-52 featuring the best panoramas of Moscow riverside with views towards the historical center.

From the very beginning the developer and architects have set an ambitious task to create a recognizable and symbolic tower, the new icon of contemporary Moscow.  The sculptural DNA-shaped twisting tower symbolizes the evolution spiral with the white façade ribbon wrapping over the roof in a form of 90-degree twisted infinity symbol, which speaks of philosophical concept of evolution and celebrates the development of human civilization. From spiraling onion domes of St. Basil to the iconic Tatlin Tower concept the Russian architecture was obsessed with idea of spiral. The simple and innovative design was based on principles of twisting square-shaped floor plates with vertical structural RC frame supported by a central core and 8 columns with continuous beams and 4 spiraling columns at the corners.

The proposed structural scheme with cantilevered continuous RC beams and cantilevered floor slabs  picking up the overhangs from the twisted floor plates appeared to be simple, efficient and economical. The complex sculptural tower façade envelope was built using the innovative cold-bent glazing with flat double glazed units cold-formed in 3D within the aluminum frame under its own weight to avoid stepping in geometry. This approach appeared to be both more energy-efficient and more cost-efficient solution in comparison to the stepped curtain wall units previously applied in some twisted unitized facades.

The multifunctional architectural glass by Guardian significantly reduces the solar gain whilst providing the double glazed unit thermal performance equal to standard triple glazed unit normally used in Moscow to withstand harsh winter conditions. The use of innovative TWIN elevators by ThyssenKrupp saved 2 shafts within the core (10 TWINs instead of 12 double-deckers in the original concept) and contributed to the overall project sustainability with lesser power consumption per passenger. Other sustainable design features include green roofs over the retail mall and integrated coil floor heating under landscaped civic piazza levels using the return water in winter to melt the snow and ice for the safety of pedestrians. The reinforced concrete formwork by PERI, including self-climbing ACS formwork specially designed for the twisting corner columns, allowed to achieve the impressive speed of RC frame construction of 6 days per floor due to perfect site logistics by Renaissance Construction as main contractor.

All innovative design solutions and optimizations secured the delivery of this fairly unique skyscraper within the project plan and almost within the budget of the standard ‘benchmark’ high-rise building. This turned out to be a major achievement of the design and construction teams.

The organic twisting silhouette dominates on its background of extruded glass towers greatly contributing into the overall composition of the high-rise Moscow-City cluster. The development delivered a significant open public space on the landscaped roof of the retail mall, thus providing the perfect mix of business uses with public and social activities of the civic plaza and the mall with its food court and core family entertainment function. The synergy of that mix with large underground car-park complemented by the direct link to the metro station and pedestrian bridge as means of main public transportation secured the successful project completion with the recent entire tower acquisition. Bold shape and timeless aesthetics as added values brought by its unique architecture materialized in a commercial success of this project with the tower being fully acquired for corporate headquarters even in the context of oversupply in the Moscow office market. The outstanding quality of architecture and its fine detailing, state of the art building services and communications of Class A office Tower together with the highest level of transport accessibility  (direct access to metro station from the lobby, large car-parking, proximity to boat pier and helipads) make this property very attractive for tenants and visitors. The beautiful riverside panoramas from offices are complemented by green roof and water features of the large 2ha terraced civic piazza as the main recreational outdoor space with direct link from the office tower lobby.

The highest quality of façade cladding, glazing, vertical transportation and MEP equipment from leading European and international suppliers provided the truly Class-A office environment with the luxury of minimalist spirit in the architecture of the new landmark on the Moscow skyline. Even before its completion the sculptural spiral of Evolution Tower, more often appearing in commercials, posters and magazines, became a new icon for modern Moscow as the symbol of its business ambitions and fast development. The Evolution Tower also became the monument to the courage of its developer (Snegiri Group) and investors, who built the great deal of trust with architects, engineers and contractors by investing their efforts and funds in a challenging adventure of designing and building the unique and innovative skyscraper for the capital of Russia.

The predominance of the white color, the soaring ceilings, gypsum wall paneling, the cornices or the parquet flooring enhance everything that is imposing about this modern design. The high ceilings provide a large entrance hall and a spacious dining and living room.

For the finishing touch of this modern design   Parisian apartment ,   Oksana Salberg  incorporated a touch of gold that you can find on the  Jonathan Adler  and DelightFULL  lighting fixtures and Boca do Lobo ‘s Sinuous Console !

You fly for hours, anticipating your arrival, wanting to take in the area and the views of another country far away from your departure airport. The airport and the area you leave from is detailed and visually full, and you know you have a great airport scenery waiting for you at the other end of the flight, then when you arrive...

...  Nothing, but flat plain emptiness and the same boring standard X-Plane basic scenery, worse there is no OSM (Open Street Map) data in the tile either, so there is no road or autogen detailing in there as well, just well nothing.

When Drzewiecki Design released their UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP , I loved it because it was like a visitor from the Cold War past, the Soviet era, and it was also great scenery and great choice of a destination to fly to from any of the capitals of Europe...  but that was it, just this great airport in the middle of nothingness, bland....   zero ville.

Moscow old.jpg

Now Drzewiecki Design has released "Moscow City"  a scenery package to compliment their UUEE Sheremetyevo, and boy how much a difference this release has done to this totally boring area.

To get the full first impression effect I flew JARDesign's A320neo from EFHK Vatnaa, Helsinki to UUEE Sheremetyevo which is flight Finnair AY153 which is a daily 9.25am service.

Moscow City_ Dep Vatnaa 1.jpg

First Impressions

I was surprised to start picking up scenery still quite away out from central Moscow, as I approached my 6000ft transition altitude. Here there was buildings and houses and the physical visual notes you were arriving somewhere.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 1.jpg

Looking hard at the horizon through the A320's windows and you could see the iconic silhouette of Moscow city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 5.jpg

The scenery provides lite versions of all Moscow's Airports, this is UUWW Vnukovo, which was easily recognisable as you flew over. As you fly closer to the centre of the city the density of the objects below becomes quite heavy as the landscape fills in. You have all kinds of infrastructure including, blocks of flats, tower blocks, factories, housing, skyscrapers and almost everything that makes up an urban landscape, in all there is 2000 custom-made buildings that makes up this impressive scenery.

A note here in that you don't get that rolling as you move feeling effect where as it just suddenly appears in front of you and then quickly disappears behind as soon as you have flown out over the area. There is a slight effect of that as there has to be, but only in the far distance and as you can see from the images the views in every direction are widespread and visually it is very good to excellent.

The "Seven Sisters" or "Stalinist skyscrapers" built from 1947 to 1953 are all in the scenery with their "Wedding Cake" architecture or officially  Russian Baroque               - Gothic style. Most famous is the Moscow State University, front and centre of the image below.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival LG 16.jpg

Central Moscow is excellent and extremely realistic, and you really need a travel guide to pick out the landmarks and detail, but it is hard to miss the Red Kremlin complex  and St Peter's square from the air.  Both sides of the aircraft is visually full until you have crossed right over the city.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 7.jpg

I am not a fan of the generated 3d OSM scenery, but this is very good in blending in perfectly with the X-Plane default scenery and giving you a smooth transition from country to urban and back again with great realism.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 14.jpg

Over the city and turning north towards Sheremetyevo, another Moscow airport UUMU Chkalovsky is represented on the turn.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 17.jpg

The city skyline is now easily visible on landing at Sheremetyevo, and that really helps in the arrival factor, more so in that the cities building infrastructure spread now comes up and around the airport to fill the gaps to the city itself, and making the original  Sheremetyevo scenery that was so open and lonely in the old X-Plane view is now a big part of the whole in this combination. No doubt it really brings this always good scenery now alive and very usable.

Moscow City_ Dep arrival 19.jpg

Sheremetyevo Airport

Before we move on to the city itself. It is important to note the area around UUEE Sheremetyevo itself.

Moscow Sheremetyevo 1.jpg

Compare the large image above to the earlier image at the start of this review to see the amount of change there is around UUEE Sheremetyevo with the addition of this Moscow City package. The two sceneries are of course meant to be used together, and in reality it would look odd if you had Moscow City scenery installed without the Sheremetyevo scenery included to fill out the northern areas. A highlight is that both sceneries together form a single whole, as the areas between the airport and the central city area are well filled in and that gives you a huge area of coverage and the full visual aspect.

To get a closer lower look at the Moscow Center I commandeered Dreamfoil's lovely Bell 407.

Moscow Buildings 1.jpg

There is a 4.000km² total area covered with this scenery here, and you have expect some sort of building replication to cover all that ground. There is of course but as well in the fact there is also enough variations as to not keep it all interesting and not obviously visually obvious.

Moscow Buildings 2.jpg

The closer you go to the central area, the variations in the buildings change there in style and density as well. And then more of the iconic buildings start to appear as you get closer in again to the middle. The business district is excellent, with a lot of business towers and the more modern futuristic skyscraper architecture that stands out in every view point in eye scans across the city.

Moscow Buildings 5.jpg

The more recent is in tune with the more older Stalinist era that makes up the Moscow skyline.

The Kremlin Complex and the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed (St Basil's) is excellently represented and so is "Red Square"

Moscow Buildings 10.jpg

There are Orthodox churches everywhere and all the big icons in the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Otkrytive Arena and department stores, museums and power stations and more....

I did have issues with many buildings floating, including the Kremlin. I tried both "Runways follow terrain contours" on and off with no flattening of the objects and there is no information in the manual either on how to fix the problem.

Night lighting is very good, yes there is again a repeatable pattern to the majority of the hundreds of the apartment blocks that does stand out, but the more individual buildings do all have that personal touch and some buildings look really very good.

Moscow Buildings Night 1.jpg

The highlight here is the business district which looks magnificent and is very realistic from any direction at night as is the lit Stadium.

Moscow Buildings Night 3.jpg

Although away from the central area the Ostankino Tower that stands 540.1 metres (1,772 ft) tall, and is the tallest freestanding structure in Europe and it looks great at night and is a very good position indicator from the air from any direction.

Included Moscow Airports

As noted also included in the scenery are seven airports and several helipads.

UUWW Vnukovo

Moscow UUWW Vnukovo 1.jpg

The futuristic Vnukovo International is very good for a lite version, with great terminals and lots of small detailing. Only thing missing is the static aircraft and a bit more ramp equipment, but otherwise it is highly usable.

UUDD Domodedovo

Moscow UUDD Domodedovo 1.jpg

The oldest of Moscow's International airports is Domodedovo. Again it is quite devoid of static aircraft and I am not crazy about the blue terminal glass work, but it is still a very workable scenery to use and has a lot of well made objects.

UUBW Zhukovsky

Moscow UUBW Zhukovsky 1.jpg

Zhukovsky was a major aircraft testing facility since the  cold war years, with most of the major Russian Experimental Design Bureau's having facilities here. It is also now used by the Ministry of Emergency Situations! and cargo carriers. It was also used as a test site for the Soviet Buran  reusable Spacecraft because it has the world's second longest pubic runway at at 5,402 m (17,723 ft). Mostly it is a collection of very large hangars but has a lot of static aircraft in storage.

UUMO Ostafyevo International Business Airport

Moscow UUMo Ostafyevo 1.jpg

A former military airbase. Ostafyevo features a new modern glass terminal, and caters primarily to business aviation.

UUMU Chkalovsky

Moscow UUMU Chkalovsky 1.jpg

Chkalovsky is a military logistics airport that is famous for it's support for the Russian Space program and transport to Star City and the Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. Yuri Gagarin left here on his final flight before crashing by the town of Kirzhach.

UUBM Myachkovo Airport

Moscow UUBM Myachkovo 1.jpg

Myachkovo is a small General Aviation Airport that is owned by the Finpromko company. Cargo aircraft up to the size of the Ilyushin ll-76 freighter can also use the airport.

UUMB Kubinka

Moscow UUMB Kubinka 1.jpg

Kubinka has been a significant Russian military airbase and large airshows are held here to show off the Russian military might.

There is also provided UUU1 Kremlin Airport, within the Kremlin walls, but I couldn't get it to work? There are two pads in H1 and H2.

Your first thoughts after reviewing this excellent Moscow scenery is not with this actual package. You then wish that you could have this extensive scenery at London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin and the list could go on with any of your favorite European Cities, and don't count a load in the Middle East and Asia. But a London scenery like this would certainly be a godsend in our X-Plane world. Drzewiecki Design has already done Warsaw and Manhattan, so there is always hope.

It is not cheap either and you need to add in their UUEE Sheremetyevo scenery package on top of that as well. But you get an awful lot of ground covered here for your money, with the area covered here that is extensive...  huge and flying into Moscow will never be the same again.

A few areas to note in one that in my case a few of the buildings floated, the download is huge load at 1.4gb and this Russian area is not the best for navigation aids and programming FMS units as most waypoints are not recognised. Most of the airports ILS coordinates also have to checked and recalibrated (Drzewiecki Design do provide all the correct coordinates) so there is a little work to do to set up repeat services but the work is worth the results.

Not only is the actual Moscow city and all it's buildings supported, you also get seven (if lite versions) of Moscow's other airports included as well, but the framerate processing of all this huge amount of objects and scale is pretty good to excellent. Framerate does hurt more on a lower (helicopter) level and certainly you need a computer with a little extra power is in no doubt required, but overall for the size of the area the scenery is extremely efficient.

Yes I was impressed by this Moscow City Scenery, as this once very barren area of X-Plane is now a very attractive repeat destination as nothing can give you a greater fulfilment than seeing your destination appear in the distance and then give you a huge visual experience as you fly over and approach your destination.

Moscow City certainly delivers that and more...  Just more sceneries like this please!

Thank you for this very thorough (as always) review. I just bought it (it's on sale) and have only one disappointment so far: Red Square has no ILS or any landing aids at all for that matter. And what a nightmare of an approach! Also I was hoping the package would include an add-on that gives my c172 a big cup holder for my Stoli. Otherwise the scenery is gorgeous. What a country!
