What a delightful experience we chartered the Yacht to celebrate a friend going away, we sailed to Sausalito and docked for 1 hour lunch after lunch back on board and cruised the bay.

Captain Rod was fantastic Lika the Stu she was so attentive to us all we had light snacks and beverages on board I am a repeat customer I used Passage Nautical for a wine event in 2020 1 thousand percent I would charter with them.

The best place in all of the West Coast to go to charter a boat of your dreams!! I went out with my fiancé to see if our wish to perhaps purchase one of our own was worth it, and the folks at Passage Nautical could not have been more helpful!  We had so much fun on our charter, and our skipper was super friendly and supplied us with lots of useful information that we couldn’t have been more happy about the day.

Loved the vessel!  Our Captain and crew were friendly, informative and extremely professional. Managed to find nearly a dozen Humpbacks displaying lunge feeding behaviors. The weather was good and the ocean very calm. We had a great afternoon and learned a lot. What a great way to celebrate my 61st birthday!

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Captain Marc has been sailing and motoring on SF Bay for 35 years. He holds a 100 Ton Captains License and is a longtime member of the St. Francis Yacht Club. He is thrilled to be able to show others this incredible place we call home.

Richard Foregger

USCG 500-Ton Master (3rd issue) skippering some of the finest yachts on San Francsico Bay and the West Coast. Captain Richard has more than 15 years experience as a professional captain. Originally from New York, he grew up in Colombia and Brazil and began his yachting career in Puget Sound.

What to Expect

What to wear.

The bay has many faces and we will do our best to make your journey the most comfortable, but we always recommend the below for your comfort and safety:

​Bring layers of clothing, as it’s better to take layers off versus not having layers to put on. Please note, we will ask you to take your shoes off upon boarding the boat, and we provide sanitized SUPER COMFY slippers. We also have cozy sanitized deck blankets, as well.

Our Disclaimer

ChinChin provides a safe and smooth ride on San Francisco Bay. Typically, guests do not experience seasickness, as ChinChin has very stable platforms. However, that being said, we are on the Bay, and recommend purchasing necessary medications that you may need prior to boarding if you are prone to seasickness. We do not have any medications on board.

If you are running late, please give us a call: (415)519-0738 . We can wait up to 30 minutes beyond your scheduled departure time. If you need to cancel LESS THAN 72 hours before departure your payment is nonrefundable. If you selected any same-day packages and cancel, a 20% cancellation fee will be retained, with the remainder being refunded.

What if there is bad weather?

The Captain reserves the right to cancel or delay the charter, due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. The Captain has ultimate authority and say on all activities on ChinChin that would imperil the safety of passengers, crew or boat.

​ Our Captains continuously monitor the weather as part of their professional responsibilities to the vessel and client. They are the only person who may cancel a charter due to weather. If there is extreme weather and our captain deems it unsafe to operate we will offer a refund and/or a reschedule. Extreme weather in the Bay Area is categorized as heavy rain and/or strong wind and/or waves.

We will contact you, the client, 72-24 hours before your event in such case, except for same day reservations.

Is gratuity included?

Bareboat charter fees fees do not include gratuity for the captain and crew. We encourage you to present gratuity directly to your Captain in cash if appropriate.  The customary gratuity is 8% and 12% of the vessel rental cost and is divided equally among all.

Where is the pick-up and drop-off location?

As you leave the Ferry Building, turn to you your right and walk to the next building which is Pier 1 ½. You will see La Mar Restaurant and a sign that says Water Taxi. Walk straight through and you will see the dock. Should you require assistance please call (415)519-0738 .

The History of The Sacajawea

The Sacajawea was built by the Army Corp of Engineers and launched in 1936 and originally christened,  "Robert Gray". She was built near Seattle Washington for the purpose of surveying the Alaskan ocean floor. In 1936 Alaska was not yet a state and it was important for US interests to have some activity there. She went on to fight in WWII and later did important resource surveys both in Alaska and SF Bay.

She can accommodate up to 150 guests for a docked event.

She can accommodate up to 12 guests for a charter cruise.

She is 127' long and weighs in at 400 tons of riveted high-iron steel.

Originally diesel-electric, she was repowered in the 70's with a 750 hp Caterpillar diesel engine.

She has 4 generators, a dive compressor, a desalinator, crane and helipad!

She was awarded the National Historic Registry status in July 2022!

Our company rented this cute spacious yacht for our fun company's outing for 3 hours. The service from start to finish was amazing. The yacht was ready when we arrived there. The captain and the bartender is very friendly, attentive and answered any questions that we have. The captain even pointed out to us if there sea mammals out in the sea as well! Alcatraz, Angel Island , Sausalito the shore of our beautiful San Francisco from Bay View to the Pier 39 was breathtaking. The yacht got plenty of chairs on the back deck, a lot of place to sit on the front deck, a dining & kitchen on the mid level, and 2 beds. But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Diversified Melges 24 World Championship 2024 Convexity Dominates as Conditions Intensify on San Francisco Bay

21 August 2024—San Francisco, CA, USA -  Day 2 of the  2024 Diversified Melges 24 World Championship  brought a thrilling change to the leaderboard as Don Wilson’s  Convexity  secured three consecutive bullets, breaking away from the fleet and taking a commanding lead.  The San Francisco Yacht Club 's organization, combined with the iconic conditions of San Francisco Bay, set the stage for a day that will be remembered.

Race Day 2 - 2024 Diversified Melges 24 World Championship San Francisco

PRO Mark Foster  and his Race Committee delivered three challenging races in conditions that tested even the most seasoned sailors. The wind shifted from 200° to 210°, building from 12-14 knots to a gusty 18-20 knots, with gusts reaching up to 24 knots. The upwind legs took 18-20 minutes on the 1.4 NM course, while downwind sprints were completed in just 8 minutes. The first two races started cleanly, but the final race of the day saw a general recall due to the tide turn, leading to the use of the U flag.

Don Wilson’s  Convexity  dominated the day, winning all three races and extending their lead with a four-race victory streak. Coach  Michael Rehe  attributed their success to maintaining boat speed, minimizing mistakes, and a bit of luck. "The boys did a great job out there and got the best out of it! Once again, San Francisco Bay delivered," Rehe remarked. He emphasized that they will continue to fight until the last day: "It's never over until it's really over."

Meanwhile,  Bora Gulari ’s  Kingspoke  maintained consistent top-three finishes (2-3-2) and holds the runner-up position, just 4 points behind  Convexity .  Peter Karrie ’s  Nefeli  (7-6-5) also stayed competitive, securing a solid third place overall.  Brian Porter ’s  Full Throttle , a ten-time Melges 24 US Champion and World Champion from the 2013 San Francisco Worlds, climbed to fourth after a strong showing in today's second race.  Anthony Kotoun ’s  Stepping Razor  continues to hold fifth place, while 2024 Melges 24 US National Champion  Geoff Fargo ’s  Sentinel  is currently in sixth after securing a third-place finish in Race 6.

Corinthian Division Highlights

In the Corinthian division,  Mataran 24 , helmed by  Ante Botica , took the lead after a series of strong finishes.  Ivo Matic , owner of  Mataran 24 , shared insights on how sailing in San Francisco Bay differs from their home waters in Croatia. With a 6-point lead over early Corinthian leader  Kent Pierce ’s  Average , the reigning Corinthian World Champions are proving they’re the team to beat.  Duane Yoslov ’s  Looper  also remains in the hunt with consistent performances.

With  Convexity  sweeping today’s races and tight competition in the Corinthian division, tomorrow promises more excitement and drama on the water.

Back ashore, sailors returned to the warm hospitality of The San Francisco Yacht Club, with stories of the day’s challenges and victories. The Bay Area Charters team provided title sponsor Diversified guests with on-the-water commentary aboard a luxurious Axopar37. After racing, Diversified’s guests enthusiastically led the "Beer Boat" efforts, distributing daily rations provided by Open Water and Trumer Pils for the final journey from Angel Island back to the SFYC docks.

Special guests for the daily awards included  David Liebenberg  of the Paris 2024 US Sailing Team (Nacra 17) and the SFYC Junior Board, led by Junior Commodore  Morgan Frymier.  Liebenberg offered behind-the-scenes insights from both the regatta and his life as an Olympic athlete. Team  Convexity  was recognized for their outstanding three-race win streak, while  Ocean Pearl  CAN 015 received the daily OCS award, taking home a Ronstan Clear Start sailing watch.

Thursday’s schedule includes two races, with the first warning signal at 11:25 AM.
