However, there are many different types of this product on the market, and not all boat owners have the necessary knowledge to understand which is the

Robbie Murtagh

"It's such a happy bunch running the PYA - they're friendly and welcoming!"

Graham Tindall

"As a 30 year yacht veteran, I have relied mostly on the idea of 'it's a who you know' industry, but as the constantly changing certification & litigation requirements become more complex, there is no doubt that the excellent service & support the PYA offers to every level of crew member makes membership an absolute must have! When my crew need support & correct advice, I always refer them to the PYA."

David White

"I have had only ever had positive experiences with the PYA - always helpful!"

Jonathan Whitwell

"The PYA is indispensable in its representation of Superyacht crew, using feedback directly from the crew to initiate major changes in the industry. Having worked with various regulatory bodies the PYA has not only offered a career pathway for crew but raised awareness of the career as one to be recognised in the professional realm. The Crew Report continues to support the PYA in its proactive and professional approach."

The most important factor in my moving up the ranks has been accurately recording my sea time and courses, and being aware of changes to requirements. The PYA has been a great help to me over the years, helping me gather and compile my sea service testimonials and offering advice on crew issues/ seafarer legalities. With me from junior deckhand right through to Master 3000 - PYA thanks for your help and making my life a lot easier!

"Thank you very much for being here, so we do not feel alone in our problems."

Shelter island’s menantic yacht club is setting sail into 2024.

yachting newsletter

The Menantic Yacht Club (MYC) is back for another season of fun Sunfish racing and camaraderie.

Our membership has increased over the years, with an average of 25 sailors participating every weekend. There will be one major change this year as the MYC’s long-time Commodore Pete Bethge has retired; he and Sallie are now enjoying life full-time in Florida. The MYC leadership now consists of yours truly as commodore, Steve Shepstone as vice commodore, Melissa Shepstone as treasurer, and Betsy Colby as secretary.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable winter and spring. I know some of our sailors, including Peter Beardsley, Alicia Rojas and Lee Montes, did their share of frostbiting over the winter.

On a sad note, Dave Olsen, a long-time, much-loved member of the MYC passed in December. Dave was a top notch sailor who was more interested in giving a helping hand to anyone in need, on or off the race course, than in finishing first. Dave hand-made a number of the MYC’s most beautiful trophies; some of his handmade trophies reside at the Shelter Island Yacht Club as well.

Dave, with his green helmet and helping hand, will be missed by the entire Shelter Island sailing community, and especially by the MYC.

On Sunday June 23, Vice-Commodore Steve Shepstone will hold a Race Committee “Tune-Up Practice” at 1 p.m. at his home at 5 Wheeler Road. He will review RC duties, including safety procedures, sailing instructions, mark placements and communications. Review will be both on shore and on water. Volunteers and sailors are  invited and should attend. RSVP to Steve Shepstone ( [email protected] ). You will learn about the finer points of conducting sailboat races. Steve is a judge with US Sailing.

Charlie Modica has a special treat in store for everyone this summer — stay tuned.

Betty Bishop and Matt Fox will captain the stake and mark boats, and hopefully our dedicated crew of volunteers will return: Debra Mintz, Amy Cococcia, Dave Daly, Ben Gonzales, Melanie Coronetz, Rita Gates, Ed Goble Elsie Rose, Mike Donlon, Susan Donlon, and all the others who volunteer from time-to-time.

And, of course, Betsy Colby will be race PRO, hopefully assisted by Marion Thomsen, Ed Hydeman and others. Non-sailors from the Shelter Island community are also invited to volunteer. Charlie, as usual, will loan the MYC his inflatable for use as the stake boat, and Jonathan Brush’s powerboat will be used by the Race Committee. Tom NcMahon’s BW will be used also.

Prior to the first race on Sunday, June 30, there will be a skippers’ meeting at our “clubhouse” at Commodore Pete’s Landing, i.e., the North Silver Beach Town landing, starting at 12:30 p.m., with the first horn going off at 2 p.m.

We will all have a chance to catch up with each other after a long winter, and to answer any questions about the upcoming season. If you have not already returned your waivers and membership forms, please bring them. They will also be available at the meeting.

The MYC was started in 1933, continued until the early 1950’s, and then had a hiatus until Commodore Pete reactivated it in 1968. Back in the day, Commodore Pete sailed Cape Cod Rockets; later he switched to Sunfish, which we sail today. In the words of Commodore Pete: “Menantic Yacht Club has a wonderful history of being a welcoming club. We are very proud of our two “C’s — camaraderie and Corinthian sailing.”

The MYC is a family-oriented club, and we would love to have some younger sailors join us. In previous years we have had families sailing together and as teams sharing the same boat.

We are a very congenial club, open to all. We may not have a clubhouse, but the sailing is great, the camaraderie is superb, and we just have tremendous fun. All sailors, novice to expert, are welcome. Just show up in West Neck Harbor at 2 on any Sunday starting on June 30 and going through September 1 the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Check in with the Race Committee giving them your full name and sail number, and be sure to bring your life jacket. Non-sailors are also welcome to assist with the Race Committee and stake boats. You can get more information about the MYC from our Facebook page: Menantic Yacht Club, or from Bob Harris at [email protected] . Steve and Melissa Shepstone have a fleet of loaner boats available on a first to reserve basis. Contact Ellen Leonforte at 914-450-1450 or at [email protected] to reserve your boat.

The MYC is a Shelter Island tradition. Let’s keep up the tradition, so please join us this summer for some of the best fun you will ever have.

See you on the water.

On a another note: congratulations to Peter Beardsley, Lee Montes, Paul Zinge, Rich Prieto and others on their participation in the Sunfish North American Championships this past weekend. Peter and Lee qualified for the Worlds. No small feat against 105 other competitors.

Get the Yacht Mom Outfit of Your Dreams for Just $24

set

We always hear about rich mom, Hamptons mom and Range Rover mom styles, but we don’t hear as much about yacht mom style. Yacht mom style is a leveled-up version of these other styles; after all, yacht moms are already rich moms and occasionally Hamptons moms too, depending on how many millions are in the bank.

Hints of nautical European style, however, make yacht mom style completely different from the rest. The linen-looking materials , luxe neutral colors, occasional stripes, simple accessories and flowy design are just a few of the many things we love about yacht mom style! If you love the style too (minus the hefty yacht mom price tags), you’re in luck — we found a bestselling two-piece outfit on sale for under $25!

Related: 16 Elastic Waist Sundresses You'll Wear on Repeat

This flowy top and shorts set looks like it’s made of gauze linen, but it’s actually made of a skin-soft and lightweight polyester material that’ll keep you cooler, cozier and more ventilated than stiff linen. Many of Us opt for linen- looking  clothes made of polyester or cotton to avoid the thickness and scratchiness of linen anyway!

The top has a button-up design, foldover collar, short sleeves and an upper thigh-length hemline, allowing you to leave it out or tuck it in or as you please. It doesn’t squeeze your midsection in any capacity, so it’s the ideal outfit to wear when you want to dress cute and comfy but want a  flattering fit , too. Isn’t that always?

Speaking of comfortable, the bottoms have a loose elastic waistband that will make you forget you’re even wearing pants! They can be worn high-rise if you want to cover your tummy or low-rise to lengthen the torso — either way is flattering! Aside from comfort, the set is ultra-trendy and fashionable enough to wear out and about, especially on the front of the boat.

And if you’re vacationing this summer, even better! This set is ideal for perusing the streets of France or walking the Italian oceanfront. You can wear it with white sneakers for a sporty-luxe look, flip-flops for a casual beachy look or with sandals for an out-to-dinner outfit, so don’t be afraid to mix it up! All you need to dress it up is your favorite pair of wedges and a leather crossbody bag. You’re good to go!

If you love the style but aren’t a fan of pale green, there are six other colors to choose from, some neutrals like beige and black and some color colors like pink and purple. So grab yours and let’s hit the water!

National Sailing Hall of Fame 2024 Inductees

The National Sailing Hall of Fame Announces 12 New Class of 2024 Inductees

The Sailing Museum and National Sailing Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 12 individuals who will be inducted into its fellowship of hall of famers this year.

This diverse list includes Jan C. O’Malley , a three-time US Sailing Yachtswoman of the Year, two-time Adams Cup winner, and the first ever winner of the IYRU Women’s World Sailing Championship; Peter Melvin , a multiple-class world and national champion, as well as an innovative yacht designer; and Charles Ulmer , a national champion and race winner throughout the 1970s and 80s and proponent of the sport of sailing through the many organizations through which he has been affiliated.

The National Sailing Hall of Fame induction committee met numerous times since nominations were gathered, eventually whittling down the original list to a slate of individuals to be inducted this year. While their biographies differ, they are all accomplished and dedicated to the sport and its community. Ten fall into its modern category, while another two represent historic classification.

Honored for technical accomplishment and contribution are brothers Eric Hall and Ben Hall , the late Gary Mull , one of the most prolific and successful U.S. sailboat designers working in the latter half of the 20th century, and the late Carl Alberg , whose 56 designs resulted in more than 10,000 boats.

Others to be inducted in the modern classification in the sailing category are Kevin Burnham , an Olympic and Goodwill Games medalist in sailing; Conn Findlay , a consummate crew member for America’s Cup competitor Courageous and Maxi Ocean Racer Windward Passage , and one of the few competitors to medal in two distinct sports (Rowing and Sailing); and Richard Tillman , the 1965 Sailor of the Year who held National, North American and World titles in the Snipe, Finn, Laser, Sunfish and Windsurfing classes. Franklin Wood , who founded the Annapolis Sailing School and established the Annapolis Sailboat Show, rounds out the modern classification in the contributor category.

Allegra Mertz , one of the two women to be inducted with O’Malley, was elected through the historic classification, along with Alberg.

“The Class of 2024 has left an indelible mark on sailing. Their achievements inspire us to explore, innovate and honor the sport. From Olympic champions to boat designers, they remind us that sailing is more than a pastime; it’s a legacy of courage and possibility,” co-chair Gary Jobson notes. “Trailblazers like Allegra Mertz, whose skill, determination and love of racing continues to inspire fellow sailors and set a high standard for excellence. Innovators such as Ben and Eric Hall, whose cutting-edge materials and championship-winning rigs have pushed innovation. These inductees are a formidable group. We look forward to celebrating their accomplishments on October 5 at the 2024 Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, hosted by the Chicago Yacht Club.”

“What an honor to welcome these remarkable individuals into The Sailing Museum and National Sailing Hall of Fame,” says Executive Director Ashley Householder. “We take seriously the responsibility of preserving the legacy of our inductees for the countless ways in which each has contributed to the sport of sailing. Please join us as we embark on telling their exceptional stories.”

Each year, the induction committee of the National Sailing Hall of Fame reviews nominations and compiles a slate of those to be inducted into its hallowed fellowship of extraordinary achievement and service. Inductions have been taking place since 2011, when the Hall was in Annapolis. The Sailing Museum and National Sailing Hall of Fame has since moved to Newport, the sailing capital of the country. The number of legends in the Hall will be 135 total with this year’s class.

This year, the Induction will be held at the Chicago Yacht Club Oct. 4-5 . Tickets will be available soon on the Hall of Fame website at thesailingmuseum.org .

More information on the inductees will be available on the Hall of Fame website, as well as on its social media sites leading up to induction.

Silenzio

Specifics regarding the “pure energy” propulsion system have not yet been shared but it should receive certification by the end of the year, Akalin says. With the ability to produce an “infinite supply of electricity,” the technology removes the need for fuel tanks and the system would “fit quite comfortably” on the 220-footer. Four Torque generators producing 5.2 MW of power will reportedly allow the yacht to cruise sans emissions, with a range of “at least” one circumnavigation and an endurance of four to five months. Powered by two 1,800 kW permanent magnet azimuth thrusters, the yacht has an estimated cruising speed of 14 to 16 knots and a maximum speed of 17 to 19 knots.

“The potential owner wants to see the system working first, so a one-on-one demo is currently being prepared,” Akalin told Robb Report via email. “If the system works completely, the first order will be received.”

Silenzio is outfitted with six guest cabins for up to 12 guests, an epic owner’s suite with a dressing room, and crew quarters for up to 16 crew. It also features a sprawling main salon, a large galley, a fitness room, a sauna, and an owner’s salon.

Silenzio is part of a new series Akalin Yacht Design is working on with Reanimer Yacht Works. A fuel-free 197-foot catamaran is also in the pipeline. Stay tuned.
