lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Lagoon’s 46-footer replaces the hugely popular Lagoon 450, one of their best selling models of all time. So no pressure then! She’s off the drawing board of long term partners VPLP and Nauta Design.

For almost 10 years, the 450 raked in the sales for Lagoon across pretty much every continent except Antartica. The first splash was in 2010, and almost 750 were built. Those are big hulls to fill!

Just like its 40- and 50-foot sisters, the mast on the 46 has been stepped aft (a trick that has been used on all sorts of boats like the Prout Snowgoose 37 and even the Gunboat 68) to make give her a smaller mainsail relative to a larger and more powerful self-tacking jib up front- this makes her easier to sail single or short-handed.

  • Very comfortable, especially down below with plenty of storage space. And that includes the forward cabin(s).
  • They have really improved on the 450 with the hard top bimini on the fly bridge (no more smacking your head). They’ve solved some of those problems with low hanging corners that you get on the 450.
  • She sails well in a decent breeze, especially with a Code 0
  • The mainsail is pretty easy to manage for this size of boat with that stepped back mast and bigger headsail.
  • The finish has improved compared to older models
  • The Lagoon 46 is pretty heavy. In light winds you will need to turn the engines on.
  • Visibility to the aft corners is not great from the flybridge. You might need to nip onto the side steps to see your sugar scoops when docking. Or install cameras
  • The aft cockpit is modestly sized compared to some other 45 footers

Lagoon are not in the business of making  ultra high performance machines – their game is more about getting you from A to B comfortably and in style – a strong competitor to boats like the Leopard 50 and the FP Saba. Having said that, you should comfortably see 8 knots under the twin 57 HP engines and 9 knots with the sails up in a decent breeze. Head off the wind, and you could see speeds comfortably in the teens. When you’ve slung your hook, of course, the Lagoon 46 comes into its own.

Like most cruising cats with keels, she won’t point as high as a monohull or a dagger board cat into the wind- 60 degrees to true is probably your optimum for maximising speed over ground and minimising leeway. (Read our Outremer 51 review if you need a boat for punching upwind with on a regular basis). If you need to point higher on a Lagoon 46, you’ll need to stick the leeward engine on at low revs to keep on track and you should comfortable make 30 degrees to apparent. Off the wind, she moves very nicely, particularly when you unfurl the code 0 in the right conditions.

Like the 450, the Flybridge is going to prove popular on these boats, particularly at anchor and she will sell well into charter I am sure. I’ve chartered a 450F myself, and from a personal point of view I prefer a boom that tucks in close to the bimini so that you can easily get to the sail and reefing lines, and I like to keep an eye on the crew when under way- not always so easy when you are perched on top.

However, each to his or her own, and there’s no doubt that this is a great boat to manoeuvre around marinas- the visibility up top is fantastic, and it makes life easy when you are anchoring as you are so close to the person up front on the windlass.

Living Space

As with most Lagoons, the big story here is living space which is huge. In addition to the fly-bridge where there is lots of lounging space aft of the wheel, there’s a small forward cockpit for sun-downers on the hook and a spacious area aft, under the fly-bridge. We love the central window at the front of the saloon which opens right up so that the inside and outside forward cockpit are connected. Just make sure you close it when you are under way.

She has a sofa across the transom plus a folding a table and an L-shaped sofa. On the starboard side you’ll find a big sun-lounger.

Head into the saloon, and you’ll walk into the spacious galley (a big improvement on the 450 this) next to the door and sliding window. There’s a nav station port forward and another dining table which you can use in bad weather. The forward window which slides down onto the foredeck is a nice evolution from the older model.

Down below, VPLP’s chines help to maximise living space above the waterline. Even up forward, the forward berth is a full-size island queen, so no more fighting about the cabins when you board. The accommodation on these boats is hard to beat, whether you go for the 3 cabin Owners or 4 cabin version. The cabins are light and spacious, with nice big heads and showers.

Generally, the 46 has more room than her predecessor thanks to her extra beam and and those chines that we’ve talked about. The galley in particular is a real improvement and the big story is the forward cabins which have has the same size beds as the aft cabins- again thanks to those chines- all the beds are semi walk around like in the aft cabin.

Lagoon 46 Brochure

View the Lagoon 46 Brochure

What is the price of a Lagoon 46? How much does this catamaran cost? That will depend on the kind of options you go for, but to give you an idea, the base price starts around €450k. Once you have added on the options, a typical price might be somewhere around €650k.

The 46 is a fine evolution from the 450 and I am sure that this is going to be another top seller for Lagoon. For comfort at this size it has few rivals except perhaps the Leopard 50 and the Fountaine Pajot range.

If you are going to get the most out of the 46, then you’ll want to at least go for a bit of solar , electric winches, water-maker, air conditioning, genset and the code zero. There’s also an option for a diving platform aft instead of davits. She’s a smart cruiser alright.

Lagoon 46 Review

The world premiere of the 46 ft. (14 m) sailing catamaran Lagoon 46 from the French shipyard Construction Navale Bordeaux (CNB) took place 4 years ago - in January 2019 in Düsseldorf. Information about the introduction of a new yacht from CNB caused not just a buzz, but a complete splash among the owners, designers and constructors of cats. After all, the previous model Lagoon 450 has long been a favorite among luxurious floating hotels, as the latest representatives of this line can be described. This catamaran has been a cruise favorite for many years and a leader in transatlantic competitions, including such a prestigious one as the Atlantic Rally of Cruisers.

It was also a treat due to the fact that the shipyard returned to the team of designers and naval architects who propelled CNB to its glory in the past. The architecture and exterior of the new model were handled by VPLP Design with Patrick le Quément, while the interior was designed by Nauta Design.

The hype reached a high level long before the premiere - CNB received dozens of applications for this new cat beforehand. And when the premiere took place, everyone who was looking forward to it realized that their hopes for some pleasant surprises were not in vain.

Lagoon 46 review by toprik team.

Even when approaching docked Lagoon 46 catamaran, without even entering the deck, the topRik team immediately noticed that the mast was carried aft with a significant offset even compared to the previous models 39, 40 and 42, which became the founders of this, as it turned out, successful shipyard experiment.

This was especially noticeable against the backdrop of the nearby Lagoon 50. We later appreciated this innovation when we were able to use a more powerful self-tacking jib, as well as a smaller, easier-to-handle mainsail.

Lagoon 46 Review by topRik Team

But the resemblance to the Lagoon 50 still manifested itself in the angular transom and the dynamic slope of the hardtop, in the large rectangular aft windows and in the fully glazed saloon, in the famous contours of the "lagoon" exterior.

The close proximity of these famous catamarans drew us on board with a desire to compare and find out if the architects and designers managed to provide the same comfort and luxury on a 46 ft. catamaran as on a 50 ft. boat.

Operated from the Flybridge, Observed from the Sunbed

When yachtsmen talk about comfort, they first of all mean the convenience of managing a catamaran. Therefore, the first area we go to is the control post. And here one of the features of this vessel immediately becomes apparent. It has excellent, although not perfect visibility. And this is with a reduced size, when compared to the Lagoon 50.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The architects didn't waste a single inch of this reduced space to make the boat comfortable to drive. They provided access to the flybridge directly from the cockpit and from both sides. And behind the helmsman there is a huge sunbed, where the rest of the crew, guests or family can sunbathe and relax, in which case the skipper can be quickly provided with the necessary assistance when needed. You won't have to strain your vocal cords to call for assistants from the cabins or saloon - someone will definitely be basking in this natural solarium at all times.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

In addition, as it turned out, help may not be needed at all for a long time. Managing the catamaran is easy even for one person as all the controls, including winches, are within easy reach.

On the move, we appreciated both the location of the standing rigging near the stern and the new position of the mast. Although the previous three cats of the shipyard also featured a non-standard mast position, in Lagoon 46 the architects achieved the maximum balance of the center of gravity. We experienced the result of this achievement in practice when managing a sail wardrobe, the overall area of which was increased by 10 m². The rigging set also proved to be surprisingly powerful for a catamaran of this size. We got great pleasure from the boat’s ability to tack in the wind. This is despite the fact that the testing in the open ocean with serious winds was not an option. However, under a full mainsail and gennaker with a fair bit of wind, it was possible to achieve speeds of almost 9 knots.

A very sensitive steering wheel, an automatic jib and electric winches, an electric drive for the boom-sheet provide an excellent opportunity to easily cope with the controls alone.

The saloon control room that has a chartplotter, table, bookshelf and intercom is also easily accessible, has excellent visibility, and the layout ensures that no one will interfere with the skipper’s work.

Travel Comfort

As we looked at the control system first, we paid attention to the thoughtful access to the flybridge, where the helmsman's station is located.

Men appreciated the wide steps (especially those that lead from the transoms), which can confidently accommodate a size 47 foot. And all the crew members noted the wide passages across the deck.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The aft cockpit is also spacious - several people can move freely at the same time without the risk of bumping into each other. From the cockpit there is free access to wide transoms.

There is also plenty of room in the bow cockpit. But the flybridge sunbathing area is simply amazing in its size and comfort. Hard to believe can't believe that this kind of freedom is offered on a 46 ft. catamaran.

The fully glazed saloon and cabins with large portholes add to the feeling of complete freedom. Even being close to 2 meters tall, you do not feel at all that you are actually in the very limited space of a cruising catamaran.

By the way, you can participate in the organization of this space: the salon and cockpit, if desired, can be combined into a single area for various events.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

We will talk about how the happy owners of this floating luxury hotel can distribute the living space among its inhabitants a bit later. But remember – the option is available!

Of course, we appreciated the hydraulic platform with electric drive in the transom part of the cat. This detail not only gave us easy access to the water, but also expanded the zone of comfortable communication, which was really neat during one of our farewell evenings with friends on this amazing boat.

Do Not Deny Yourself Anything

After experiencing the excellent living and working conditions on Lagoon 46 for a couple of days, we decided that the shipyard designers were indeed guided by this phrase. Everything was provided here even for the most demanding and capricious cruise participants.

To be honest, there are not much capricious people in the topRik team. But from our point of view, we appreciated the presence of many lockers and cabinets, compartments under the folding seats in all areas of the boat. Here you can place all the necessary luggage for a long trip with a large group of people.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

At the same time, you will not have to deny yourself excesses too, not just the necessities - some of us have experience in organizing charters and it was noted that for this purpose or just for a large family or a group of friends, there is everything you need on the cat.

The aft cockpit is equipped with a bimini and protective sheets from rain and splashes. The dining area (or another place of rest) is equipped with a retractable sofa and a transforming table. When unfolded, this table can easily accommodate 12 people, and if you make some room, then even more. This is the case if you decide to have a party and invite the crew of a neighboring ship to visit. The number 12 is the maximum number of comfortable beds that can be equipped on Lagoon 46.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The two-module galley for outdoor cooking is equipped with all necessary kitchen appliances. Optional additions are generally almost limitless - there would be a place for everyone. The galley is very conveniently located on the border of the saloon and the cockpit, and through the window, cooked dishes can be transferred from the saloon to the cockpit table.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The large lounger in the cockpit can accommodate watchers waiting for their portion of delicious food. And to store a large number of supplies for tasty treats, a spacious refrigerator with a freezer is designed.

We have already sung the praises of the luxurious flybridge sunbathing area. The bow cockpit is an additional sunbed with comfortable modular sunbeds and a table, the role of which is played by a locker. Great place for an evening cocktail in an almost intimate setting.

Privacy in the cabin is excluded, since it is designed for 8 people, but if necessary and desired, it can accommodate more. The area is flooded with light, the supply of which is provided by large glazed screens. They also provide an all-round view.

Here you can dine, relax, party, using the aft cockpit and pneumatic platform. The folding table is surrounded by a corner sofa and a backless sofa. As already noted, under the seats there are places for luggage. The shelves above the cabinet can be used for albums, magazines and books. On the same side, opposite the corner sofa in our case, a large television screen was placed.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Everyone noted that the unavoidable detail of the interior - the camouflaged part of the mast - does not interfere at all during movements. One of us, the especially broad-shouldered specimen, found the passage from the saloon to the cockpit a bit cramped. But apparently, this is a consequence of visiting the flybridge. After its spaciousness everything seems cramped.

Comfortable steps lead from the saloon to the cabins. Let us descend now...

You Can’t Forbid Living Beautifully

Since we had an option with the owner's cabin, you must understand who got it. But all the participants in the voyage were able to get acquainted with its luxury. Our skipper single-handedly occupied the entire starboard hull, since that is how the cabins are distributed in this layout. The owner's cabin is a comfortable accommodation, equipped with all the necessary attributes for a comfortable stay.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

You can start and end your day here in the bathroom with toilet and shower. An excellent sleeping place in the form of an island double bed will provide a restful sleep and good rest after work at the helm and with sails.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

All luggage will find a suitable place in the wardrobes and lockers. You do not have to fold clothes to save space - you can freely hang them in the closet. There is also plenty of room for other accessories to make sailing as comfortable as possible.

A writing desk and an additional sofa complete the furnishing of the owner's cabin.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Others were accommodated in two double cabins in the bow and stern. Despite the fact that their area is half the size of the owner's cabin, there is a place for island beds and shower rooms with all the necessary hygienic amenities.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Access to all sleeping places is provided from two sides. This is of great importance if the catamaran is intended for charter use. In this case, order an option for 4 double cabins, each of which has a private bathroom with all amenities for hygiene procedures.

All cabins are furnished with ample storage space for personal luggage. The cabins have excellent ventilation, a lot of light thanks to hatches and portholes.

The purpose of the topRik team was not only to find the merits and sing the praises to the architects and designers of Lagoon 46. We diligently looked for the flaws as well, in order to say “Aha! Nobody's perfect!" The search did not lead to anything until the flaw itself announced itself. One of us hit his hip on the corner of the table in an awkward turn. And this way we discovered that not all the furniture on the cat has rounded corners.

But speaking seriously, it seemed to us that some elements of the cat are dangerously close to water or poorly protected from water. We are talking about an additional electrical panel on the starboard side and a maintenance battery in the hold. But against all the advantages, these points look more like nit-picking.

Advantages of Lagoon 46

We would highlight the following main advantages of the cruising sailing catamaran Lagoon 46:

  • Quality, including the method of making the balsa, glass and polyester sandwich hulls.
  • Safety ensured by the use of materials that are resistant to corrosion and osmosis.
  • A well-thought-out control system, including the location and design of the mast with appropriate sailing equipment and rigging, a convenient distance between the easy-to-handle helm, electric winches and other elements of the control station.
  • Improved seaworthiness (maneuverability, performance, etc.) as a result of an improved control system and hull design.
  • Excellent organization of space, taking into account the reduction in the size of the vessel.
  • The unique comfort of being on board for both passengers and crew.
  • Versatility in the configuration of cabins, as well as the organization of space due to partitions.
  • Nearly unlimited optional upgrades for added comfort and safety of life and work on board.

Lagoon 46 Reviews by Professionals

Leading journalists of popular yachting media shared their impressions of the cruising sailing catamaran Lagoon 46.

  • Claire Mahon from Sailing Today took a short ride on her new cat.
  • Mark Pillsbury of Cruising World delivered it to Fort Lauderdale after the Miami International Boat Show.
  • TMG took the Editor of Cruising Helmsman Magazine - Phillip Ross - on a boating trip on their Lagoon 46.
  • But let’s first see what Massimo Gino from Nauta Design had to say based on his interview with Claire Mahon from Sailing Today.

Massimo Gino

Massimo mentions that considering the amount or superyacht project they are involved in, it’s the Beneteau group that always was a reliable partner since 2005. It really seemed like unachievable task – to make a new Lagoon in order to replace the best-selling 450 model. Then the question was asked: "What exactly makes a catamaran a Lagoon?" After this the core was there – perception of the brand, style and function were imagined, independent of technology or building techniques. 450’s features were updated and improved to allow Lagoon 46 to outshine the legend.

Claire Mahon

Claire also addressed the success of previous model 450 with almost 1000 models sold. Surely, it would be a tough act to follow, considering all the innovative techniques used in its production! Yet updated design and sail plan of Lagoon 46 are a game changer.

In Claire’s educated opinion, model 46 provides you with enough freedom on board to make you want to buy it instead of the predecessor.

Mark Pillsbury

But the 46 is a pretty sweet ride – as I found out when I tagged along on its delivery up to Fort Lauderdale after the show. As with its 40- and 50-foot siblings that were launched a year earlier, the mast on the 46 is stepped relatively far aft, allowing for a larger and more powerful self-tacking jib up forward, and a smaller and easier to handle mainsail.

Mark Pillsbury writes, that the ride was very pleasant as he was delivering Lagoon 46 to Fort Lauderdale – he particularly enjoyed new sailing equipment. He gives important point about the speed: when motored by two 57 HP Yanmars, it is about 8.5 knots. And when sailing close-hauled, the boat reached 9 knots. Even with the wind into the teens, with unfurled code zero, he went up a couple more knots. Also, the agility of the boat was proven in Fort Lauderdale’s narrow canals.

Phillip Ross

Phillip commends the movement of the mast aft, resulting in increased mainsail aspect ratio, easier mainsail handling and a larger headsail allowing for more foretriangle options and a self-tacking genoa.

The efficiency is increased since now the headsail can be drawn in closer to the center line without getting blocked by the rig. The overall sail area is increased by 11 sq. m. over the previous model 450 and handling it is actually easier thanks the centered mast.

Lagoon 46: Yacht in review

One of the catamarans to keep an eye out for is the fantastic Lagoon 46. With several impressive novelties, the Lagoon 46 could potentially become the replacement of today’s most popular Lagoon model of all times, the Lagoon 450 .

If you are searching for a catamaran with amazing sailing performance and enough space for you and your friends, be sure to check out the Lagoon 46. Find out why she should be your holiday yacht in Yacht4Less’s comprehensive review below.

lagoon 46 bow

A sailing holiday is all about that special and liberating feeling. That is why the interior of the Lagoon 46 is very open, making you feel as if you are one with the ocean. Lagoon promises to keep designing catamarans with bright saloons and 360 panoramic views so you can enjoy the colorful scenery wherever you are on board.

The U-shaped galley was designed so that socializing with friends at the aft cockpit while cooking is very easy. The galley comes with a 4 burner stove, dishwasher, lots of storage, and most importantly, enough refrigerators to keep all of your food and drinks coolled. Did you know that the Lagoon 46 has also got a sliding large front window which allows you to easily pass on drinks to friends at the bow as well?

The cabins are very spacious, offering more than enough storage for all belongings. One of the many beautiful and new characteristics which this catamaran model offers is that all beds (in both aft and bow cabins) are the same size - queen beds.

lagoon 46 galley

She is a 5-star hotel floating on water. No matter which version you choose (3 or 4 cabin version), each cabin has its own bathroom and toilet.

lagoon 46 toilet

The 3 cabin owners version has an enormous owner's cabin on the starboard side, with 2 same size cabins on the port side. The 4 cabin version has 4 large cabins.

We decided to divide the exterior into 3 parts and give you a walkthrough of each. These are the places you will mostly be staying at while on board, so let's get into detail:

lagoon 46 cockpit

  • Flybridge - the bench seat is large enough for the skipper and guests to be together while sailing. The wide cushions on the flybridge can be transformed into a seating or tanning area, making this area very customizable. The views from up here are the best, so if you are looking for the best place to relax on board, it would most definitely be there.
  • Bow cockpit - typical for a Lagoon catamaran, you will find the nets connecting the two hulls of the boat. With a large seating area for socializing, there is a newly added small coffee table where you can enjoy a glass of wine when anchored in a relaxing and calm bay.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Even though she is a 46, the overall length is just under 46’, 45'11'' (13.99m). Her beam is 7.96m and her draft is 1.35m. This allows for anchoring in more shallow waters closer to the beach. This model is often equipped with a watermaker, in which case guests do not have to stress about water at all. She can accommodate up to 12 people so the size of the water tanks (2x300l) is more than sufficient. With 2 fuel tanks, each holding up to 520l of fuel, guests are spared of searching for fuel stations during their holiday as enough fuel fits for a weeks worth of sailing.

lagoon 46 aft cabin

The Lagoon 46 has 2 single cabins at the bow which can be used by the crew (skipper and hostess or cook), or a small child. Find out more about skippered charters , and fully crewed charters . If you prefer to sail with a professional crew, Yacht4Less can help you find your charter crew.

As she is lighter than her predecessors, she is able to reach higher speeds. Under power with the standard 2x57 HP engines, she can go up to 8.5 knots if you really push her. Usually you will go up to 7 knots and will still be able to enjoy the noticeable quieter engines.

Under sails, she can go up to 13 knots. Lagoon 46 has the mast moved backwards towards the aft, allowing for more stable and less rocky sailing, minimizing the ‘‘up-and-down’ feeling. As she is a big and powerful catamaran, sailing is made easier with her self tacking jib.

Depending on the time of year, charter prices range from €5400 (£4500) in pre and post season, and up to €12000 (£10000) in high season in Croatia. Prices in Greece and Italy this year are very similar, ranging from €6000 (£5050) to €11,500 (£9600). Keep in mind that these are bareboat prices. Skipper, crew, and extras can be ordered additionally. In high season, daily skippers rates can range from €180 to €200 (average £160), and daily hostesses rates from €120 to €150 (average £110) per day. This beauty is not only spacious and comfortable, she offers impressive designs throughout the interior and exterior. The salon is large and airy, the designs are modern and the layout makes the boat very functional. Each part of the catamaran was designed to perfection and space was used up wisely, creating the ideal catamaran for your sailing holiday.

Lagoon 46 catamaran (2021) 'Clearlake III'

Lagoon 46 catamaran exterior

Clearlake’s features include:

Starting at the stern.

Upon boarding, after a swim or from the dock, life aboard is accessed from wide-open transoms with just two shallow steps up into the cockpit. This Lagoon 46 catamaran also has the tender-lift option which, when the dinghy is launched, doubles as a fabulous bathing platform.

The cockpit is well thought out and spacious. When the cockpit table is not in use, the leaves fold down and there is an ingenious sliding seat that folds beneath the table, allowing access to the flybridge on the port side, as well as access from the starboard side.

Additionally, in the cockpit, there is a front-loading fridge, a sink, and plenty of storage on the starboard side. To port, there is an extensive countertop with a built-in icebox.

The Interior

Clearlake’s saloon is sumptuous and spacious. The galley is exceptional with copious storage and counter space, with a big sliding window that opens to the cockpit.

Natural light streams through the wrap-around vertical windows. There is a retractable sash window forward for maximum ventilation, as well as for passing drinks to the forward cockpit. Sinking into the saloon settees, you have to remind yourself you are on a yacht.

Fully air-conditioned, with a generator, extensive fridge, and freezer space –  this catamaran is designed for easy living.

There are three cabins in the hulls, each with en-suite electric heads and showers.  Berths are large doubles in all cabins. There is bountiful storage in hanging lockers and cupboards, leaving cabins clear of clutter.

Large fixed hull windows with opening portlights bring natural light in abundance and great ventilation.

There is a air-conditioned single berth in the port bow, accessed from the deck.

Under sail, the Lagoon 46 catamaran has easy sail handling and manoeuvring as well as optimized performance. There is a high aspect mainsail, with a traveller adjusted using an electric captive winch.

The mast step is positioned further aft, reducing pitching and allowing a larger self-tacking jib, which is set on a curved track for added smoothness through the tack or gybe.

The narrower hulls below the waterline create less drag, and with a hull chine, there is no compromise to interior space. So better performance and better accommodation!

With autopilot, the latest B&G navigation equipment, and electric winches where needed, she can be sailed comfortably short-handed. With cable steering, the helm feedback is excellent.

Up forward the transition from the trampoline to the forward cockpit area is flush. There is no stepping down, and the cowling for the anchor windlass doubles as a great tabletop.

Under power, the yacht is smooth and responsive. The upgraded Yanmar 57 HP diesel pushes her under power comfortably at over 8 knots cruising speed.

All the tradition, heritage and quality of Lagoon have been encapsulated in the Lagoon 46, and with advanced design performance and superior comfort, you are assured of a sensational sailing vacation.

Licensed for 6 persons, this 15ft RIB with 60HP Yamaha outboard will get you and your crew to snorkelling spots and the beach in style and comfort.

Make your charter yacht vacation a breeze – enjoy the comfort of being able to tie up your yacht for the night and then continue exploring the surrounding bays! You can pick up your mooring ball at the Bight and then head to the Indians or the Caves for a snorkel. If you visit the Dogs, there’s no need to choose only one snorkel spot for your lunch stop, zip around them all!  A swim ladder makes boarding easy from the water.

For popular spots where it’s trickier to find a mooring, the RIB is the perfect alternative. Settle into Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke for the night and then take the RIB to White Bay for the afternoon to enjoy painkillers without the hassle of finding a mooring ball or having to move your yacht for the night.

The North Sound boasts a selection of some of the best dining options in the BVI. There’s no need to settle for only one spot when you have the RIB. Pick up provisions from Leverick Bay, enjoy the plunge pool at Nova in Deep Bay, and then zip back to the sound for sundowners at Saba Rock before enjoying dinner at The Bitter End.

If you have a mix of snorkelers, beachgoers, shoppers and sailors onboard then give your group flexibility by taking the standard dinghy included in your charter as well. This will also remove the need to make multiple dinghy trips ashore for larger groups.

Evolution of the 620 Perceptible in New Flagship Lagoon 60

The successor to the best-selling 620 model passes the test with flying colours in the crystal-clear waters off Menorca, Spain, before it premieres at Cannes in September.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Lagoon, the world leader in cruising multihulls (with 7,000 built since 1984), didn’t use all its most creative ideas during the euphoria that gripped when COVID-19 struck. Now that the market is tougher, the manufacturer is pulling out all the stops with two new sailing catamarans, the 43 and the 60, each to be presented at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival (Sept 10-15, 2024).

It was the larger of the two catamarans, now the flagship of the “standard” range, that we got the chance to discover in the crystal-clear waters off the northern end of Menorca, Spain.

Replacing the former first-in-class model was never going to be an easy task. In this case, the shadow of the 620 was hanging over the 60. Lagoon sold 169 units of the larger 620, before the Premium version of the model launched, and it was a great success.

Back in March in Bordeaux, where all Lagoon yachts over 50ft are built, we were able to see for ourselves, at the first presentation of the Lagoon 60, how all the key points of the 620 had been taken up and, of course, optimised to meet today’s requirements. Now we got to see them in action.

Brand manager Thomas Gailly and product developer Bruno Belmont welcomed us to Fornells Bay, Menorca.

There we were, in conditions very close to those of proper cruising: the Lagoon 60 was anchored here, with the Lagoon staff staying on board. The large catamaran had just completed a long sea trial, and the crew had been asked to report back to the shipyard on all sensations, good and bad. The aim, of course, being to fine-tune this new catamaran before the big commercial launch in September.

As soon as we step aboard, the evolution from the 620 is immediately perceptible – it’s surprisingly easy to climb the steps up to the cockpit, or rather the beach club. Gailly and Belmont set out the positioning baseline “Openness, fluidity, comfort, generosity: the Lagoon 60 is a dream stage”.

Beyond the marketing language, the figures confirm the XXL ambience on board: a 36sqm cockpit with pivoting terrace, a flybridge equally as vast, a 20sqm owner’s suite, a cockpit accessible via a forward door, and saloon space of over 20sqm. Such features are virtually unheard of in this size range.

A Lengthy Development

Numbers alone would be insufficient to describe the particularities of this new model. Belmont told us that it took two years of development to reconcile satisfactory performance under sail with the ultimate in yacht comfort.

It wasn’t easy to fit the immense space of the cockpit-terrace lounge on the same level as the forward cockpit. As for the central bay window, it opens out to its full width, and the aft beam has been done away with to allow an unobstructed view over the water.

The whole architecture is designed to stiffen the platform, making it more resistant to torsional forces. The return to a forward-stepped rig offers a number of advantages: a more forgiving and powerful sail plan in light choppy weather, a more open saloon thanks to the elimination of the mast compression post, and a flybridge that’s now perfectly unobstructed.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The decreed specifications were clear: the Lagoon 60 had to remain a simple catamaran, easy to manage, and more energy-efficient.

For the powertrain, Yanmar was asked to develop a special 150hp motor with sail-drive transmission, an arrangement that saves space and is more reliable than a V-drive.

As for the chilled-water air-conditioning, it consumes 25 per cent less energy – it is designed to run all night on the lithium battery bank. With two 125A alternators on each engine, the generator only needs to run for eight hours out of every 24 to meet substantial on-board ‘hotel’ requirements.

Ease of Use And Versatility

All the technical aspects have been designed to optimise on-board comfort, along with ergonomics and modularity. In these latter areas, the 60 boasts features directly inspired by the premium Lagoon SIXTY/SEVENTY range.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

It’s easy to get around on board, thanks to a carefully thought-out circulation system. The 45-degree flybridge companionway, with wide steps where you can pass one another, and the single-level floor are much appreciated.

The aft terrace, with its large modular table and fold-down wings – facilitating boarding when alongside the dock – is a success. As for the full-width bathing platform, it’s a must-have feature. The saloon is equally convincing, especially in the galley-down version. The space includes a counter/bar, half outside and half inside, where all the guests on board can meet for a snack, that is simply brilliant. The table and sofa are very comfortable and enjoy an unobstructed sea view.

The sunbathing area forward on the flybridge is extremely pleasant. Under the hard top, the immense space is modular to the owner’s taste, with options available from the catalogue. The choice of four or five cabins is determined by whether to have the galley down or up. The owner is pampered with a suite that has direct access to the aft deck.

Storage space is both plentiful and spacious, and finishes, such as the oak Alpi, are of the highest quality. The options guide for customising finishes and choosing accessories runs to no less than 150 pages.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

Power and Stability

All this comfort, of course, comes with a high displacement (34 tonnes as opposed to 30t for the Lagoon 620 and 28.2t for the Fountaine Pajot Samana 59). With an upwind sail area of 233sqm, the sail area-to-weight ratio is 6.85sqm/t (7.67sqm/t for the Lagoon 620 and 7.23sqm/t for the Samana 59).

Would the Lagoon 60 be equipped to cope with the light air on the day of our test, though? “It’s not just the power to weight parameter that dictates the performance of a cruising catamaran,” warned Belmont. “The hull form and the prismatic coefficient also play an important role.”

It all depends on what you’re looking for: long, exhilarating sailing at over 20 knots, or a comfortable average speed in most conditions? On the face of it, the Lagoon 60 ticks the second box.

With sails set, our multihull headed off on a slight swell. We kept a close eye on the GPS to keep track of the acceleration, and the Lagoon 60 eventually settled down at 8 knots, despite a true wind that wasn’t exceeding 10 knots.

lagoon 46 catamaran specs

The power offered by the gennaker also helps stabilise this flattering speed, as the hulls smoothly ride the waves. Even in these light conditions, we could see that this big catamaran, once it gets going, is a good performer. Underfoot, you can also feel that the structure is perfectly rigid.

When it’s time to drop sail, you have to go up to furl the main in the beautiful Lorima canoe boom; it’s just a shame that a furling boom isn’t (yet) included in the catalogue of options.

Last but not least, the stern-mounted engines are particularly discreet, which is an undeniable asset when it comes to maintaining an average speed of eight knots in the absence of any breeze.

A modern cruising catamaran is a platform that is becoming increasingly complex as buyers demand ever more comfort. Lagoon’s designers are well aware of this evolution and have succeeded in combining ease of use with great comfort.

The Lagoon 60 benefits from the experience gained with the Premium range: and with just a few more feet, it’ll be a superyacht.
