In Chattanooga, the grandiose Tennessee River weaves its way through the city. It has always provided us with transportation, recreation and electricity. It is a source of nature and adventure, history and knowledge. Historically, the river has been our foundation and our livelihood. Chattanooga just wouldn't be Chattanooga if it weren't for the mighty Tennessee.

Now, the river can be our way to enjoy the water and the wonders of fall from an uncommon vantage point and through a unique experience: river cruises.

We spoke with those familiar with the river's waters to see why you should make a river cruise part of your fall itinerary.

The Belle of the Fall

The Southern Belle Riverboat is a fixture of Chattanooga's riverfront. Docked below the Olgiati Bridge in the backyard of the Tennessee Aquarium and within walking distance of Ross's Landing, the Southern Belle is just one part of the city's active, vibrant downtown.

With three decks and a maximum occupancy of 453, there's plenty of room to spread out and see the scenery, whether it's through the large windows of the enclosed first and second decks or up on the open-air third deck, which offers unparalleled views of your surroundings. During the fall, you'll be able to take in the majesty of the changing colors of the Tennessee River Gorge, nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of Tennessee," when you go for a fall foliage cruise.

"My favorite time of year," Southern Belle captain and chief engineer Nick Williams says of the fall season.

While on a fall foliage cruise, you'll be able to enjoy the colors and smells of the season best from the third deck, according to Williams. The air will be crisp, and you can enjoy a coffee, or even apple cider, during the three-hour cruise. The route takes passengers from the dock down-river to Suck Creek and back, providing scenes of the gorge's picturesque landscapes all the way.

"It's all about looking at the colors, but there's that atmosphere of the cool air being on the water," Williams says of the fall foliage cruises. "A lot of times, it's foggy. It's just kind of magical. There's a lot of neat stuff to see in the canyon."

From the colors and geography of the gorge to the wildlife that calls it home, the sights are certainly one of the primary reasons to venture out on a fall foliage cruise, but there's more to the trip than meets the eye — more than just grabbing that perfect shot for Instagram. The Southern Belle captains pride themselves on their narration, providing passengers with the history and stories of the land surrounding them.

During the captains' narration, you'll learn about such landmarks as Lookout Mountain, Moccasin Bend, Brown's Ferry and Williams Island. You'll also learn about the Native Americans who called this land home and about the city and region's role in the Civil War, among other topics. Williams says he wants people to leave the cruises saying that was the "best narration in town."

For Southern Belle first mate Jacob Carmack, the narration is an opportunity to engage with passengers, to show them that it's not a recording regurgitating history — it's actually him, sharing with passengers what he's taken the time to learn about the Chattanooga area.

"I just try to give them as much information as I can and keep it as light and fun as possible," Carmack says.

As the riverboat pulls away from the dock when the cruise is underway, you'll hear the horn blaring, announcing the vessel's departure, and when the boat returns, the horn sounds once more, calling out a certain pattern that hearkens back to riverboat tradition — a tradition started by Mark Twain.

"We actually use his very same landing whistle when we come back to the dock on our sightseeing cruises," Williams says. "So it's one long, two shorts, one long, one short, which is Morse code for T-I-N — 'Let's bring this tin can in.'"

And as that tin can docks and you step back onto land, you'll leave having not just seen the grandeur of the Tennessee River Gorge but also having learned more about the Scenic City.

Chattanooga Ducks

— What: Tours on land and water in World War II-era amphibious vehicles

Duck, Duck, Cruise

In addition to the Southern Belle, there are also the Chattanooga Ducks ' amphibious vehicles that take you from land to water and to land again for a one-of-a-kind cruise experience.

The Reinert family, the owners of the Southern Belle, purchased the Ducks in 2018. The goal was to ensure that if someone wanted a boat ride in Chattanooga, they would be able to provide one, says Joe Reinert, one of the captains of the Ducks.

According to Reinert, the Ducks were historically involved in World War II as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. Of the thousands that were manufactured, only 90 Ducks were returned to the U.S., and of those, only 63 are still in operation — of which eight are in Chattanooga. At some point, there will be no more Ducks, Reinert says, adding that with that comes a responsibility to be a caretaker for the extant vessels and to pass on their history.

"As we get further away from World War II, the younger generation really [doesn't] understand what the military vessels and those operations really meant," Reinert says. "When the older folks start to die, ... the younger kids don't get those stories of why it's significant. And it's the same thing with the Ducks. When they're gone, there's just going to be pictures of them, and they aren't going to be operational."

A key part of the Duck experience, aside from the history, is the thrill of going from land to water, cruising down the ramp and splashing into the Tennessee River in a wheeled vehicle. Reinert compares the Ducks to the kind of multi-use transport you might see in a James Bond movie or to the eponymous screwball car from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," which just so happens to be a children's book creation by "James Bond" author Ian Fleming.

When going on a Duck excursion, you can expect to spend about 30 minutes on land and 30 minutes on the water, with full narration. Just as with the Southern Belle, the narration on the Duck tours will teach you about the history of the Chattanooga area. While the Ducks show off the river like the Southern Belle, the vessels have the added benefit of being able to take passengers on a tour of Chattanooga's downtown and Southside districts as well.

And just as with the Southern Belle, you can expect to enjoy all the splendor of fall on a Duck tour during the season.

Tennessee River cruises

Rollin' on the River

While an excursion on the Southern Belle or Ducks makes for an excellent one-day activity, it is also possible to explore the Tennessee River over an extended period. This is the benefit of taking a Tennessee River cruise with American Cruise Lines , which offers comfortable rooms, onboard activities, entertainment and excursions in various towns.

Someone who knows firsthand about the river cruise experience is Phil Westbrook, who has worked as an entertainer on river cruises for over two decades — primarily aboard the American Queen Steamboat Company's recently decommissioned namesake riverboat. While he is currently a Las Vegas resident, he's no stranger to Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. In fact, when it comes to Tennessee River cruises, Westbrook says Chattanooga is a destination people should have on their bucket lists.

"If you can do a boat, you can see the whole river and really enjoy how beautiful it is," Westbrook says, adding that Chattanooga is the jewel of Tennessee River itineraries.

In his career working on cruise boats, Westbrook has predominantly served as a pianist and singer, entertaining and getting to know guests as they enjoy their trip along the water. Westbrook started working on cruises because "there are no jobs on land for musicians," at least not like there used to be, he says. A job in live music was hard to come by on land around the turn of the century, Westbrook says, but there was work to be had on cruise boats.

"That was really where the market was sending me, was out on the water," he says.

Working on the cruises gave Westbrook the opportunity to expand his craft. In addition to his typical shows, he was able to do some big band-style performances, and he also played the calliope, a piano-like instrument that moves steam through whistles to produce sounds that can be heard for miles. Recounting his introduction to the calliope, Westbrook says he was told to "figure out how to play it" and to get ear plugs because there were already "enough deaf musicians." When the boat would arrive at a lock on a river, Westbrook would play the calliope, and people in the surrounding area would come to the lock to hear the music, he says.

Part of the job also included writing his own music. If something unexpected happened on the river, Westbrook would write a song about it and would have the passengers help write some of the verses and sing the song with him.

"We would sing a new verse and describe what happened that day," Westbrook says. "And at the end of a cruise, we had this six-, eight-, 10-, 25-verse song, depending on how long the cruise was, all about their cruise that got messed up because the river was too high or the river was too low or we just couldn't go where we needed to go."

In Westbrook's experience, the smaller river cruises provide a better opportunity for more personable passenger-crew connections compared to what's possible on a larger ocean cruise (a "floating city," as he calls them). These more personal connections make the cruises much more rewarding for everyone, he says.

"You get much deeper into their personal lives than you would think is possible in a seven-day cruise," Westbrook says of connecting with passengers. "At least that's what would happen to me, which I guess is why I have so many people who still want to come and see me on a boat somewhere."

But it wasn't just the passengers that he connected with. He also formed strong relationships with fellow crew members. Living and working together within that very confined, somewhat isolated, floating space meant that crew members were pushed together and inevitably became a close-knit group.

"There were all kinds of experiences, the highs and the lows — just life experiences. They all happened in this microcosm called the riverboat," Westbrook says. "We would listen to each other; we could vent with each other down there in the crew mess, usually, or out on deck somewhere. We all commiserated whenever we could — there was a lot of hugging and a lot of camaraderie that is just born of the closeness of your proximity."

Regardless of how you choose to spend your time on the Tennessee River, whether it be sightseeing on the Southern Belle, traversing land and water on a Duck boat or kicking back while traveling hundreds of miles on an extended river cruise, your fall is sure to be cooler on the water.

Chattanooga Travel Cruises the Tennessee River

Downtown chattanooga aboard river boats, catamarans, & ducks.

Chattanooga travel isn’t complete without the Tennessee River. Visitors cruise the downtown waterfront in amphibious vehicles, jet-propelled catamarans, and riverboats.

Whether visitors encounter downtown Chattanooga while strolling across the Walnut Street Bridge or taking a guided cruise, the beautiful Tennessee River that winds its way through the heart of the Scenic City is bound to be a Chattanooga travel highlight. Adventurous guests tour the river on one of the Chattanooga Ducks, a WWII amphibious landing vehicle. Other visitors enjoy a hearty meal on the Southern Belle River Boat. Guests interested in the area’s history and abundant wildlife book tours on the Aquarium’s River Gorge Explorer or the Blue Moon.

Chattanooga Travel and Duck Tours

Families board a renovated WWII amphibious landing vehicle for a tour that begins on the streets of downtown Chattanooga. Suddenly, their Duck speeds down a ramp straight toward the Tennessee River, and with a splash, the bus becomes a boat. Guides detail the history and point out wildlife on the Tennessee riverfront as well as MacLellan Island.

Chattanooga Travel and Cruises on the Southern Belle Riverboat

Several times a day, visitors to downtown Chattanooga hear the happy sound of a calliope. The cheerful tunes cause families to pause while enjoying the Aquarium’s plaza, strolling across Walnut Street Bridge, playing in Coolidge Park’s fountain, or hiking along the riverfront and scan the channel for the familiar sight of Chattanooga’s riverboat, the Southern Belle.

The riverboat has become a favorite Chattanooga attraction. Families stream onto the vessel for either of two hour-and-a-half sight-seeing cruises each day. These tours narrate the fascinating history surrounding the river. The Southern Belle also serves a buffet lunch allowing families to catch a bite and see the sights.

The Southern Belle’s prime rib dinner cruises are a great opportunity for families to enjoy a fancier meal and live entertainment on the water. For couples wanting a romantic date on the river, the Southern Belle offers a fabulous meal served on the Pier 2 restaurant and then a moonlight cruise complete with music and dancing.

Tennessee Aquarium and the River Gorge Explorer

In 2008, the Tennessee Aquarium launched a tour allowing families to glimpse the abundant wildlife of the Tennessee River outside the Aquariums two four-story buildings. Guests board a catamaran propelled by water jets to be transported into Tennessee’s Grand Canyon, the 27,000-acre river gorge.

A naturalist from the aquarium is aboard to help guests identify the wide variety of plant and animal life in the gorge. Swimming groups of whitetail deer, wild turkey on William’s Island, circling hawks, nesting osprey, playful river otters, muskrats, and beavers are all commonly spotted from the deck of the River Gorge Explorer.

Guides aboard the River Gorge Explorer give equal attention to the area’s fascinating history. With engaging stories, they narrate the history of the Native American tribes who lived along the river, the early settlers who braved the gorge’s turbulent shoals, and the Civil War battles fought on the Tennessee River’s banks.

To save money, families can purchase combination tickets to visit the Tennessee Aquarium and take a ride on the River Gorge Explorer. Triple combination tickets are available for adding a movie on the ten-story high screen of Chattanooga’s Imax Theater.

Chattanooga Travel and Blue Moon Cruises

March through December the Blue Moon, a 71-foot riverboat, also takes visitors into the heart of the Tennessee River Gorge. Breathtaking natural beauty waits to be explored in this 26,000-acre canyon spanning 26 miles of the Tennessee River. Guides point out great blue herons, kingfishers, hawks, and eagles. Nearly 200 species of birds are native to this Gorge.

Local history and legends are also recounted for guests on the Blue Moon. Visitors travel to one of the 6 known sacred places of the Cherokees, the home to their Maker of Thunder. Guests follow the once perilous path of the first Tennessee settlers. Visitors trace the path of the Cherokee Indians who were forced from their homeland on boats through the gorge. Guests hear of the soldiers who fought along the gorge as the trip takes them near such battle sites as Lookout Mountain, Moccasin Bend, Brown’s Ferry, Kelly’s Ferry, William’s Island, the Haley Trace, and Signal Point. Guests also learn of Chattanooga’s industrial past as they pass by an abandoned coal mine.

From late December to late February, the Blue Moon offers tours of the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. Visitors glimpse some of the 10,000 sandhill cranes that touch down on Hiwassee Island as a stop on their winter migration. Over twenty bald eagles also choose the wildlife refuge as a winter home. One pair has added to their nest for ten years, allowing guests to marvel at the six-foot, one-ton eagle nest.

Visitors who enjoy the breath-taking sights of the Tennessee River will be excited to come ashore for some of the Scenic City’s most popular attractions. Destinations continuing the theme of Chattanooga’s amazing history and natural beauty include the Tennessee Aquarium , Rock City, and downtown Chattanooga.

About the Tennessee River

The Tennessee River was once known as the Cherokee River, by the Cherokee Native Americans as they lived along its banks. Its current name comes from the Cherokee town, Tanasi, located on the Tennessee side of the Appalachian Mountains. The river has cultural and historical significance to the American Civil War which had its first battle along the river in 1862. The Tennessee River is home to over 100 species of freshwater muscles, however, muscle populations have significantly declined due to dam construction, water pollution, and invasive species.

At 652 miles, the Tennessee River is the largest in Tennessee and flows into the Ohio River. The Tennessee River connects to the Mississippi River, making the Tennessee River the Ohio River’s largest tributary. There are over 20 tributaries that are connected to the Tennessee River.

The Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful is a nonprofit that works to keep the Tennessee River beautiful for generations. They host river clean-ups and provide additional community outreach. Check out their events calendar for an upcoming river cleanup. It’s a small way to give back to the waterways we enjoy boating on.

Heading eastbound on the Tennessee River

Navigating the Tennessee River

As with any river, the Tennessee River has current working for and against you. Heading eastbound towards Chattanooga, the current will be against you whereas heading westbound, the current will be in your favor. You’ll also notice, that the current will get stronger as you approach each lock and dam heading eastbound, making it slower. Depending upon recent rainfall and water levels, you can expect a 1-2 knot current. Check out the TVA’s website for the most up-to-date information on flow rates and lake levels .

As you travel upstream towards Chattanooga, the buoys will be red on your right and green on your left. As you turn around to make the return trip back to the Great Loop route, the buoys will flip and red will be on your left and green on your right.

Tug and Barge Traffic

As expected on most of these midwest rivers, tug and barges can also be found on the Tennessee River, although they are significantly reduced in size and quantity. Many of the barges going to and from Chattanooga are carrying steel.

A tugboat enters the Wilson Lock & Dam

Locks on the Tennessee River

There are four locks on the Chattanooga side trip from the Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi border around Iuka to Chattanooga and three additional locks for boaters going all the way to Knoxville . The Tennessee Valley Authority, or TVA for short, manages all of these locks. It is a good idea to call this lock ahead to see what the wait time looks like before starting your cruise for the day since the channel going eastbound is a bit narrow for boats, tugs, and barges.

Anchorages on the Tennessee River

The Tennessee River on the Chattanooga side trip has several options for anchorages , however, we primarily stayed at marinas or free docks! We heard some of the best anchorages can be found just beyond Chattanooga for boaters continuing to explore the Tennessee River on their way to Knoxville.

Here is a list of anchorages we stayed at:

  • Battery Hill Anchorage – We stayed at this anchorage and liked it (shown below). It was protected as it’s off the channel with the island protecting us from tug and barge traffic.
  • Shellmound Recreation Area – While we docked at one of the two free docks, a sailboat anchored near the docks and took their dinghy to the docks to go to shore. So if the docks aren’t free or if it’s too shallow for your boat’s draft, anchoring is another option.

Fuel on the Tennessee River

Boaters traveling on the Tennessee River to Chattanooga have several options for refueling along the way. Some of the places where boaters can refuel include the list of marinas listed above. We refueled in Iuka, MS before starting the Chattanooga side trip and again at Goosepond Colony Resort and Marina. We recommended calling ahead to marinas to find out their most current fuel prices !

Provisioning on the Tennessee River

Unlike the Nashville side trip , the Chattanooga side trip has several opportunities for re-provisioning . Some of the best spots to re-provision on the Tennessee River include Florence, Alabama since the Florence Harbor Marina has a courtesy van. Another great opportunity is to use the courtesy car at Goosepond Colony Resort and Marina. Lastly, Chattanooga has the greatest variety in grocery stores but you might need to take an Uber or Lyft back to your boat with your groceries. There are no grocery stores within a 1-mile walking distance from any of the destinations on the Chattanooga side trip.

Muscle Shoals and Florence, Alabama

  • 3614 Jackson Highway
  • FAME Recording Studios

Weather Planning for the Tennessee River

Each of the larger bodies of water including Wilson Lake, Guntersville Lake, Chickamauga Lake, and Watts Bar Lake, can get rough with white caps if the wind is strong and oriented in the long direction of the lake. It’s important to review the weather conditions before traveling . We typically didn’t travel if the weather was forecasted over 25 knots, but everyone’s go-or-no-go is based on their comfort zone with their boat .

Tennessee River Sample Boating Itinerary

The Chattanooga side trip is not a quick trip and requires a decent commitment to complete it. Loopers usually explore the Tennessee River in the fall when the autumn colors are in full bloom, giving boaters a beautiful view of the Tennessee River, however, the Tennessee River is beautiful year-round. Some boaters choose to spend their summers exploring all the great anchorages, diving deep into the cities and towns along the river, and taking in the summer boating culture on the river. With that being said, this is a sample itinerary based on a boat speed of 6-7 knots for loopers on a one-year loop schedule . If your boat goes faster, you’ll be able to shorten some of these travel days.

Day 1 – Start the Chattanooga Side Trip and cruise to Joe Wheeler State Park

52.5 Nautical Miles | 9:40 Travel Time

Since the AGLCA Rendezvous is often located at Joe Wheeler State Park and many loopers situate themselves at this marina for the Fall Rendezvous, it seemed best to start the Chattanooga side trip here instead of Florence and Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Not to worry though, we’ll hit Florence and Muscle Shoals on our way back!

This is a rather long day as it goes through two locks (Whitten Lock and Wheeler Lock)which means it’s crucially important to call the lock masters ahead of time to find out what their wait time is. This will be one of the longest travel days, so it’s best to leave early in the morning to maximize sunlight hours.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 2 – Short Travel Day from Joe Wheeler State Park to Decatur Free Dock

22.1 Nautical Miles | 4:00 Travel Time

Enjoy an easy, short travel day from Joe Wheeler State Park to the free dock in Decatur. If you prefer a marina with full amenities, continue cruising to Ditto Landing Marina.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 3 – Decatur Free Docks to Guntersville Free Docks

47 Nautical Miles | 8:35 Travel Time

Enjoy this narrow, meandering river as you cruise to the Guntersville Lock and Dam. Take advantage of more free docks on your way to Guntersville! Guntersville has a great riverwalk and there’s a wide variety of restaurants adjacent to the docks including a steak house and a brewery!

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 4 – Cruise from Guntersville to Battery Hill Anchorage

47.5 Nautical Miles | 8:40 Travel Time

If you have enough daylight or a faster boat, you can try to make it to Shellmound Recreation Area’s free docks just beyond the Nickajack Lock and Dam. The Shellmound Recreation Area is a lot easier with a dog as the docks take you to a grassy area to walk a dog compared to the muddy banks near Battery Hill Anchorage. You’ll want to leave early since there are limited sunlight hours. Alternatively, you can start your morning at ‘Another Broken Egg Cafe’ and get a slower start to your morning as you head to Goosepond Colony Resort and Marina.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 5 – Battery Hill Anchorage to Chattanooga!

45 Nautical Miles | 8:15 Travel Time

Soon after leaving Battery Hill Anchorage, you’ll arrive at your final lock on the Chattanooga side trip (unless you’re continuing to Knoxville) – the Nickajack Lock and Dam. Just past Nickajack Lake is one of the most beautiful parts of the Tennesse River as you’re in the Tennessee River Valley ! Cruise into Chattanooga to the Downtown docks. Enjoy your first night out in Chattanooga.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 6 – Explore Chattanooga

Explore some of the great attractions and activities in Chattanooga such as the aquarium or the riverwalk!

Day 7 – Explore Chattanooga

Continue to explore the city with the Tennessee Aquarium (our favorite attraction in Chattanooga) followed by some pizza at Community Pie. Or enjoy a rest day after traveling 5 long days, 250 nautical miles, and 4 locks to Chattanooga!

Day 8 – Explore Chattanooga

Last day exploring Chattanooga! PS – don’t forget to reach out to the AGLCA Chattanooga Harbor Hosts! Maggie and Bruce are amazing people. Bruce wrote the book Currently Away about their Great Loop experience, and we were honored to write the book’s foreword!

Day 9 – Leave Chattanooga and Cruise to Shellmound

33 Nautical Miles | 6:00 Travel Time

Enjoy retracing your tracks as you make your way downriver, first through some of the most beautiful sections of the Tennessee River! Cruise to Shellmound Recreation Area free dock.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 10 – Shellmound Recreation Area free dock to Guntersville

58.2 Nautical Miles | 10:41 Travel Time

This is a very long cruise day, but hopefully, we’ll get some extra speed as we have the current in our favor! Once you make it to Guntersville, enjoy a get-there-beer at the Brewers Cooperative in Guntersville because you deserve it! If this is too far to go in one day, stop at Goosepond Colony Resort and Marina.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 11 – Cruise from Guntersville to Decatur

Make sure to call the Guntersville Lock before you leave the dock just in case they are locking through a tug and barge! Retracing our tracks from day 3.

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 12 – Cruise to Florence/Muscle Shoals

38.5 Nautical Miles | 7:05 Travel Time

Enjoy your second to last day on the Tennessee River with two locks (Wheeler Lock and Wilson Lock) before arriving in Florence for two nights! Take the night off as tomorrow is a full day in Florence and Muscle Shoals!

Map of the Chattanooga Side Trip

Day 13 – One Full Day to Explore Florence/Muscle Shoals

0 Nautical Miles | 0:00 Travel Time

Known for its deep roots in music, this is one town that should not be missed on the Great Loop! Make sure to watch the Muscle Shoals Documentary on Amazon Prime before you explore the attractions here!

Day 14 – Rejoin the Great Loop Route

33.5 Nautical Miles | 6:10 Travel Time

Leave Florence and Muscle Shoals to rejoin the Great Loop Route. End your day at an anchorage on the Tennessee River just outside of Iuka. This anchorage is the Waterfall Anchorage , which is a bit of a tight fit for larger boats, however, there are plenty of other anchorages to choose from in this area. If you prefer to stay at marinas, continue to some of the marinas in Iuka, MS.

  • Friday, September 6, 2024

When the Tennessee Golf Association kicked off its 2024 schedule of events in early May with the 4 th Tennessee Mid-Amateur Four-Ball tournament, Mother Nature had other plans for the weekend.

An afternoon monsoon soaked the Towhee Club in Spring Hill during the opening round, making the course unplayable for the remainder of the tournament. Only one-third of the groups were able to complete their rounds, and the tournament was rescheduled for this weekend with ideal weather conditions expected.

A pair of golfers from Jackson Country Club, Aaron Ingalls and Jeff Reuter, had taken advantage of a morning tee time back in May to post a score of 10-under 60 before the storms arrived to grab an early lead. Unfortunately, that impressive showing was wiped away as the tournament will start afresh on Saturday.

Trying to find an open date became a challenge given the fact most weekends were already booked with various state, local and national events over the course of the summer. Plus, competing with high school and college football presented additional challenges.

Ingalls and Reuter are back hoping to continue their mastery of the par-70, 6,513-yard Towhee Club and reclaim the title they won in 2022, but last year’s winning tandem are not in the field. Lucas Armstrong of Church Hill and Payne Denman of Knoxville are unable to pursue a repeat as champions as Denman is busy with his new gig as a golf assistant with the University of Tennessee’s men’s team that is hosting a tournament this weekend.

In fact, last year’s champions as well as the trio of teams that tied for second four strokes back are missing from this weekend’s roster.

A total of 42 teams will be vying for the winner’s trophy in the two-day event. Teams with connections to the Chattanooga area include the duo of Andrew Black and Bill Tarver along with Nathan Frazier paired with Keoni Vidrine.

Lookout Mountain’s Wallace McKinney will go to battle with Mac Keith of Brentwood, Council Fire Club’s Brendon Wilson is combining with Corey Rochelle of Lawrenceburg and Hunter Clary of Council Fire will pair with Jay Rhoten of Nashville.

For complete results and live scoring, go to State Mid-Am Four-Ball

Upcoming TGA Events: Three days following the conclusion of the State Mid-Amateur Four-Ball, the Tennessee Mid-Amateur Championship will take place at Jackson Country Club. Taylor Mottern, the women’s golf coach at Sewanee, will seek to defend his title at the event slated to run next Wednesday through Friday.

The Tennessee Women’s Senior and Mid-Amateur Championships will be Sept. 17-18 at Franklin Bridge Golf Club, with the season concluding with the Tennessee Senior and Super Senior Match Play Championships concluding the schedule at Shelbyville’s River Bend Country Club on Sept. 24-27.
