Les Voiles de Saint Tropez Maxi Week gets underway with 46 yachts
The second week of Les Voiles de St Tropez kicks off today (October 4) with a record number of Maxi yacht entries – 46 – including high-performance regatta winners and showstopping modern classics. Here are some of the largest Maxis competing for the crown...
Length : 35.11m Builder : Swan
Jasi was delivered in 2018 as a Swan 115 flush deck model. She is constructed from lightweight foam and carbon cores in order to meet the strict weight requirements to keep this yacht up to her promised sailing prowess. On the technical side, sails are flown on a high modulus carbon mast and boom by Southern Spars with hydraulic upper and lower deflectors and ECSix carbon rigging.
Length : 33.95m Builder : Yachting Developments
Silvertip i s a born racer with a lightweight carbon composite hull designed by Dubois Naval Architects . She was delivered in 2001 and is often spotted on the regatta circuit, competing in a number of prestigious races around the world. Most recently, she took several wins at the Mastercard Superyacht Regatta in Auckland, New Zealand, and came third overall. Silvertip features a flush deck for ease of movement around the boat when racing and has a full complement of sails by North Sails, including a 572 sqm mainsail, paired with Southern Spars rigging.
Length : 33m Builder : Turquoise Yachts
Sold off market in September 2022 this sailing classic (formerly known as Simba) returns to the racecourse as Namuun . She was the second Truly Classic 108 sailing yacht to hit the water, following in the footsteps of her sistership Jazz Jr, and features a flush deck, low deckhouse, sweeping sheer, moderate freeboard and keyhole-shaped cockpits. Simba can carry full main and genoa in up to 17-18 knots of true wind. A low wetted surface area offers good performance in light winds, paired with a high aspect ratio sail plan.
Length : 32.87m Builder : Vitters
The Vitters-built Missy has returned to the racing circuit this year as Pattoo after a change in ownership earlier this year. She was developed in collaboration with Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design and is the first project delivered by Vitters in cooperation with the studio. The owner's brief was for a carbon-fibre performance cruiser and resulted in her slim 7.5 metre beam, generous sail plan and lifting keel that extends from 3.75 metres to five metres. She has a carbon-fibre mast is from Southern Spars (with ECsix carbon rigging) and carries a sail wardrobe from North Sails.
Spirit Of Malouen X
Length : 32.55m Builder : Green Marine
Spirit Of Malouen X previously raced under the name Open Season for many years with victories at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in 2015 and 2016. She was delivered in 2012 as a Wallycento but was later extended by two metres increasing her draft from 6.2 metres to 7.1 metres, enhancing her competitiveness in the Wally racing circuit. She was purchased in Spring 2022 by an experienced owner, and the yacht is now lined up for an extensive three-year racing program.
Length : 30.5m Builder : Southern Wind
Morgana is an all-carbon racer-cruiser commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and delivered in 2020. She is designed inside and out by Nauta Design with naval architecture by Reichel Pugh Yacht Design and is the second Southern Wind sailing to be purchased by the owner. Towering above the hull is a high modulus carbon rig and a powerful sailplan; below the water, a single rudder and a deep lifting keel that extends to 6.1 metres. Buttons on the pedestal in the aft cockpit control the mainsheet, vang, outhaul, cunningham, backstays and headsail furling.
Length : 30.5m Builder : Wally
Y3K is the product of three of the biggest names in sailing: Wally , Luca Bassani and Frers Naval Architecture . She was delivered in 2009. She flies 540 square metres of sale with a mast and boom by Hall Spars and rigging by PBO. When cruising, she can be managed by only two crew, giving the owner the pleasure of steering a yacht as fast as a maxi racer without worrying about children and guests onboard: the social areas are safely separated from the manoeuvring areas.
Length : 30.48m Builder : Wally
Galateia is the third hull in the Wallycento line, but she represents a second generation evolution for the 30.48 metre box-rule Wally fleet. Impressed by the performance of the second Wallycento, Magic Carpet3 , after her debut in 2013, the owners of Galateia also chose Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design as naval architects for their new build with exterior design by Wally and Luca Bassani . Galateia features what Wally dubs a “super flush deck” and puts a priority on entertainment with a large guest cockpit set amidships.
Length : 30.5m Builder : McConaghy Boats
Leopard 3 was built in GRP by Australian yard McConaghy Boats to a design by Farr Yacht Design and delivered in 2007. She is arguably the most high profile racer cruiser yacht in existence and has a trophy cabinet packed with silverware, having taken first place at the 2016 Rolex Maxi Cup and Les Voiles de St Tropez, among a host of other regattas and races worldwide.
Magic Carpet Cubed
Fresh from a win at the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta , the WallyCento Magic Carpet Cubed returns to the racecourse in Saint Tropez to test its mettle once again. She was launched as the second in a series of next-gen performance cruisers by Wally, named the Wallycento, in a collaboration between Luca Bassani and Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design. The boat has a displacement of just 50 tonnes (if you remove the keel and the mast, that figure drops to 18 tonnes) which makes her one of the lightest cruising boats ever built. During her construction, every item was weighed, right down to the titanium screws holding it all together. Her Southern Spars rigging flies 640 square metres of sail while a lifting keel reduces her draft by two metres.
Length : 30.48 Builder : Persico Marine
Tango was delivered as a WallyCento model in 2017 and was designed for speed. Built in carbon fibre and has a minimalist interior by Pininfarina with cabins that can be neatly converted into a sail storage room when the yacht is set up for regatta racing, thanks to a giant skylight hatch that gives direct access from the foredeck. A single, 45 metre Southern Spars carbon mast offers a total sailplan of 640 square metres upwind, and the boat easily reaches seven knots.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez: one of the world’s largest Maxi Yacht meets!
Les Voiles 2023 is starting with a bang on Sunday. 40 Maxi Yachts, jewels of both elegance and technology, are hitting the racetrack and the outright winner of the International Maxi Association’s Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge will be crowned this coming Friday. Powering into action at Le Portalet, midway through the afternoon they’ll cross tacks with the Classic yachts sprinting from Cannes to Saint Tropez within the scope of the Yacht Club de France’s Autumn Cup. Once everyone’s in the gulf, the tone will be set for a dazzling week of competition in celebration of the convivial spirit that is synonymous with Les Voiles, where the resplendence of yachting takes on a whole new level. 250 sailboats, over 3,000 sailors, daily musical entertainment and the traditional event highlights that have forged the reputation of Les Voiles will converge around the all-new Village des Voiles which this year has pride of place atop the town’s Jean Réveille jetty.
A paperless Les Voiles Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez’s paperless approach to all its publications is taking on a whole new dimension this year. Indeed, the 3,000 sailors and all the public can now access everything they need in just one click by scanning a QR code, which is notably available on the event’s website. Principal Race Officer, Georges Korhel, welcomes this highly connected virtuous approach with open arms as it benefits the planet and makes the work of his teams so much simpler. Going forward, the skippers, sailors and fans will have at their fingertips all the latest information about the different race schedules and results via smartphone or tablet.
One of the finest Maxi meets on the planet! With 40 Maxis set to hit the racetrack, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez is one of the main events on the race schedule for the International Maxi Association presided over by Benoit de Froidmont. At the cutting edge of technology, with an LOA in excess of 30 metres on occasion, these magnificent monohulls are split into 4 different groups in Saint Tropez, according to each yacht’s measurement and rating, ensuring that the competition is as fair as possible. This will be the last of 6 meetings this season to crown the champion of the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge (PalmaVela, Sorrento Trophy, Rolex Giraglia, Copa del Rey, Rolex Cup) so posting a stellar performance in Saint Tropez is an absolute must for many in their bid to round off the year in style.
Benoit de Froidmont, President of the International Maxi Association. “2023 ends here for the Maxis. It’s been a fantastic, windy and hotly contested season with a record participation. The association has really gone from strength to strength with 60 members racing in our competitions. We’re happy with this size. Saint Tropez is a special venue for us. The event is both festive and incredibly competitive. I’m racing on Wallyno (Wally 60), in a very competitive Maxi C class. We won 10 years ago and it’d be great to take another win…”
Pierre Roinson , President of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez “By getting the Maxis out on the racetrack tomorrow, we’re reviving the Nioulargue experience of 43 years ago and going back to our roots in the process. Les Voiles is an unmissable event for these boats, which will be concluding their season here. Once again, Les Voiles will be treating fans of beautiful sailboats to this extraordinary mix of classic and modern yachts, with competitor numbers set at 250 throughout the event. The event is also continuing to step up its efforts to champion ecology and sustainable development, work with local youngsters, use geostationary marks and ensure any publications related to the event are paperless.

Voiles de Saint-Tropez
VOILES de saint-tropez
September 28th – october 6th, 2024
« The sailing world’s flagship event »
A spectacle we admire and feel in our bones! Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez is the event of the year that no sailor worth their salt wants to miss. The yachts usually moored in the harbour leave to make way for the majestic modern and classic sailing yachts. It is a truly wonderful sight to see the harbour shimmering with tall masts rising into the sky during this one week of the year.
Initially called the Nioulargue, the event has its origins in 1981 and a challenge between Dick Jayson, owner and helmsman of Pride (Swan 44), and Jean Lorrain at the helm of Ikra (12M IR), thrown down via an intermediary, Patrice de Colmont, owner of Club 55. The challenge was a race starting from the Portalet tower, the winner inviting the loser to lunch at Club 55! It was all very friendly and was won by Ikra . The following year, a request came from the American seeking revenge and so began a story that we are still admiring and enjoying today.
In 1999, the event was entrusted to André Beaufils and Thierry Catino, then President of the SNST, and was renamed Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.
A wonderful competitive meeting held in a convivial very international atmosphere, with racing at the end of each day ending in the Voiles Village as sailors crowd round the pop-up bar to exchange stories. A whole range of stands are open all day and evening, contributing to the festive atmosphere.
The year 2020 marks another landmark for the event which up to now has spanned a week. The new programme extends over two weeks and promises a breathtaking spectacle. Now the course will be able to accommodate all the big boats in the best conditions with the creation of the exclusive Les Voiles Super Boats. On the programme will be new inshore courses for the 300 boats expected for the meeting: classic and modern sailing yachts, Wally, Loro Piana, Mini Maxis, Super Maxis, Schooners, GTR and J Class.

Consistency key as Provezza power to Saint-Tropez title win
Ergin Imre’s Turkish flagged Provezza team kept their nerve and used their excellent light airs boat speed on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez today to lift the first title of the 2023 season as winners of the 52 SUPER SERIES Saint-Tropez Sailing Week.
While six different teams of the 11 competing won races from the eight sailed, Provezza were not among them. Rather it was their consistency across winds which ranged from 5 to 20kts which proved decisive. Going into the final race today tied on points with the 2022 champions, Doug DeVos’s Quantum Racing powered by American Magic, Provezza started well enough to earn a share of the favoured right side of the course and with a second place win the French regatta by six clear points.
With Kiwi Olympic bronze medallist John Cutler steering and compatriot Hamish Pepper calling tactics Provezza stayed focused today when their nearest challengers – who have a new afterguard this season – mistimed the light wind start and dropped to second place overall, sharing the same aggregate points tally as Tony Langley’s Gladiator who take third on countback.
Back from the brink of giving up
It is the first regatta win for Imre’s team since 2019 when they triumphed in Puerto Sherry, Andalucia and their third event triumph after Puerto Portals, Mallorca in 2017. Over recent years they have shown huge potential but technical breakdowns have often cost them. Last year at the opening regatta in Baiona, Galicia helm Cutler had to stand down with a viral infection and they broke their forestay so had to miss two races. Indeed it is no secret that Imre, after more than 30 years competing, was considering giving up grand prix sailing last season. But they finished 2022 with two podium finishes and the Turkish owner’s passion was reignited. They were considered possible podium finishers here.
A winter of work optimising and making changes appears to have paid off for Provezza. They have a new keel fin giving more grip for light airs manoeuvring and building speed and lift quicker, new sail designers, setting up the rig differently and after losing Juan Meseguer to the America’s Cup have a new, key sail trimmer in Kiwi Grant Loretz, an America’s Cup winning trimmer and sail program coordinator. They started well and generally managed to take places if they were deep in the pack, three second places being their best scores.
Imre smiled, “I first came to Saint Tropez 43 years ago and it was the sexiest place in the world and today it still is the sexiest place in the world. But this was a light winds regatta and we had made changes through the winter. We changed the keel, we changed our sail trimmers, we have new sail designers. Everything seems to have worked though. We did not have any race wins but neither did we have any bad ones.”
Experience in depth
Spanish navigator Nacho Postigo has been racing TP52s since 2005 when he won the inaugural Med fleet regatta with Pisco Sour. He enthused, “This is great for the team. We did not come here expecting to win. We have a lot of new things, new people in the team a new keel, new sail designers, changes to the boat. We were approaching this regatta really just thinking to learn where we are. But we were performing very, very well. We had some nervous moments but we just said ‘let us keep cool. The course was very one sided and the thing is now there are no weak boats, it is very difficult to pass boats. You have to get off the start and we did well there.”
Quantum Racing powered by American Magic won two races and had one third but also count three eighths in their scoreline. Considering they have four new, young crew members and a new tactician in John Kostecki they gelled faster than many outsiders expected and until the final race today were actually on the threshold of carrying on the winning momentum of last year when they took victories at four of last season’s events.
Young Victor Diaz de Leon is settling into the dual role of navigator/strategist alongside Kostecki. A sportsboat and small keelboat racer, Sail GP and M32 racer with multiple world championship titles to his name he had never served as a race navigator at any level until starting to learn at the Valencia Easter training camp. Indeed he did not own a computer until recently. He paid a tribute to rival Postigo who has been grounding him in the dark arts and science of the role.
“It was a great experience. We got better through the week and this is now a long, hard season and we just want to keep getting better and better. We need to work a little on our light airs starting. We seemed to get better in the medium to light airs starting we need to work on the light airs starts. I did not have any real expectations coming here because I have never sailed these boats before with this team and so my objective coming here was to come here, work hard and do my best. The vibe on board is great and so I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. I do want to give a special thanks to Nacho Postigo on the winning boat Provezza. I have never navigated before and Nacho has been very generous with his time teaching me how to work the Expedition software, I am indebted to him.” He grinned.
The Parada factor?
And four times 52 SUPER SERIES champion skipper Guillermo Parada seems to be the catalyst of positive improvements on Gladiator. They finished with a flourish today, winning the final race to take third overall, their first podium since the season decider in Menorca in 2017 when they finished second, tying on points with champions Azzurra.
Trimmer Simon Fry said, “It is a fantastic start to the season for us. The team are tight, we dropped a couple of points early in the regatta, we said ‘trust the process’, we did and it worked for us. The ‘Parada Factor?’ Guille is great, he is passionate, he is talented, you would have him on any team.”
And Parada himself comments, “This is a big boost to our confidence and our motivation for Scarlino and to have a good regatta there. We were gifted the conditions, light airs suit our style. We made the most of the opportunity that was given to us. Probably some of the other teams were looking a bit at each other. We gave it everything we had to make sure finish in the best positions all the time. So we are happy to be tied for second on points with Quantum, third on countback.”
The 52 SUPER SERIES moves next to Scarlino, Tuscany for the 52 SUPER SERIES Scarlino Sailing Week May 29th to June 3rd.
Final standings 52 SUPER SERIES Saint-Tropez Sailing Week after eight races:
