Meet ‘Home,’ the Sleek 164-Foot Superyacht That Starred in ‘Below Deck’

The 164-footer was not only the backdrop for the reality series but also has hybrid propulsion and a "50 shades of white" interior., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Superyacht Home by Heesen

The 164-foot motor yacht Home was Heesen’s first hybrid yacht when it delivered in 2017. It was also the first yacht to combine hybrid propulsion with a Fast Displacement Hull Shape (FDHF), which is proven to outperform conventional hull forms at all speeds. Built in lightweight aluminum, Home delivers 48 percent more fuel efficiency than other yachts of the same size.

Another perk of the hybrid propulsion package is reduced noise and vibration. Sensory expert Barry Smith, founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses, discovered that the enjoyment of fine dining and wine while cruising in electric mode is significantly enhanced.

“Our research has shown that the brain’s processing of taste is affected by noise, which reduces the tongue’s ability to detect salt, sweet and sour,” says Smith. “The beauty of Home is the ability to run at a sound of around 46 decibels—the sound level of softly falling rain—enabling those on board to enjoy food and drink with no diminution of taste.”

Home began as a speculation build by the shipyard, before the American owner stepped in to the project. The initial interior was not to his liking, so he engaged Italian designer Cristiano Gatto to rework the design. He mandated simplicity, rather than minimalism. He also requested decor inspired by his residences, reflecting their contemporary Ibiza style. One perfect example: The slinky metal chaise lounge in the main salon by Italian designer Franco Poli.

Here are 10 facts about one of the world’s first hybrid yachts.

Star of the Med

yachts used for below deck

Home ’s fortune took a sharp turn in 2022 when it became the star of the seventh season of Below Deck Mediterranean . Filmed in Malta, the reality series followed its crew over an eight-week charter season, with Captain Sandy Yawn at the helm. Unlike most yachts on Below Deck, Home retained its real name on screen. It was the first diesel-electric motor yacht to appear on the show, and in typical style, the producers added a dancing pole to the sundeck to spice up the onboard antics.

50 Shades of White

yachts used for below deck

Home takes the trend for neutral interiors to a whole new level. Alongside a color palette of black and gray with pops of deep red, the yacht features 50 shades of white, from off-white to ivory. The original owner mandated an interior that gave him a “home away from home”—hence the yacht’s name. Low-slung sofas and bespoke loose furniture create a relaxed and welcoming beach club ambience. The vessel’s teak flooring and full-height glass windows blur the distinction between inside and out.

Party Lounge

yachts used for below deck

One of Heesen’s signature areas is an upper-deck sky lounge. Home ’s casual bean bags, daybeds, and stark-white bar with LED strip lighting provide a natural extension to the alfresco dining terrace. When the doors to the aft deck are shut and the furniture removed, a mirror ball and a smoke machine are added turning the area into a dedicated party room for nighttime use.

A Dreamier Shade of Pale

yachts used for below deck

Full-height windows in the full-beam, main deck owner’s suite bounce natural light off the paler-than-pale color scheme. The off-white bed, rug, walls, and ceiling are offset with a sky-blue bed throw. There is a dressing room, an en suite with shower and a private office. There’s also a full-beam VIP cabin on the lower deck, as well as two double cabins and two twin cabins to accommodate 12 guests, including families.

Moody Sundeck

yachts used for below deck

Home ’s sundeck is the hub of the boat. There are sun lounges forward with privacy glass safety screens to shelter guests from sea spray and wind. Beneath the hardtop bimini is a large sit-up bar and lounge area, which also doubles as an outdoor dining area. The bar lights up in soft pastel shades at night to bring the party atmosphere. Aft is a Jacuzzi, while a projector and a screen set-up transform the deck into an outdoor cinema.

On the Nose

yachts used for below deck

The yacht is easily spotted on the horizon, thanks to its distinctive plumb bow. The vertical front increases Home ’s waterline length, helping it to slice through waves and lift in rougher water. It guarantees a smoother and faster ride for guests, as well as creating more room on the interior for crew accommodations. For a more immersive journey, a telescopic seat on the foredeck rises from the bow for 360-degree views.

Sea Terrace

yachts used for below deck

A central staircase on the main deck aft leads down to an oversized swim platform that doubles as a sea-level sun lounge. With plenty of room for daybeds and sunrise yoga sessions, it’s the perfect waterside hang out.

The Athletic Club

yachts used for below deck

The lower-deck gym is a full-beam, air-conditioned space for guests to sweat it out. It’s kitted out with a range of equipment, including a workout bench, Techno Gym dumbbells, an exercise bike, and a rowing machine. When guests are done with their workout, they’re just a few steps from the sea for the ultimate plunge to cool off.

The Electric Package

yachts used for below deck

The twin 805 hp MTU engines (smaller than those typically fitted on a yacht of this size) can be operated in four different cruising modes: hybrid (with noise levels in the owner’s stateroom measuring as low as 46 decibels), economic, cruising (consuming as little as 12 gallons per hour at 9 knots), and boost, which pushes the boat to a top speed of 16.8 knots.

Fast, Efficient Hull

yachts used for below deck

At the time of launch, Home was the first yacht to combine the super efficiency of an FDHF hull, designed by Van Oosenan Naval Architects, with hybrid propulsion. The combination was celebrated with a RINA green award presented by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Below Deck Yachts

Yacht with Below Deck logo

If you’ve never seen the show, it follows the crew of a luxury yacht during peak “charter season.” The original Below Deck, for example, showed off the glitz and glamour of the Caribbean, especially around St. Thomas, the British Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas. The Mediterranean spin-off, on the other hand, highlights European hotspots, including Italy, Spain and Croatia.

The show is undeniably a ton of fun. From the drama in the crew quarters, to the incredible beaches, the show provides an entertaining look behind the curtain.

Yet, the chartered superyachts are the real stars of the show. Each season, Below Deck features a truly stunning super yacht. All of them measure over 150 feet and are decked out in opulent features, staterooms and amenities. And here’s something you might not know: The majority of the Below Deck yachts are available for charter!

Below Deck Charter Yachts

Through five seasons, Below Deck has featured some of the most magnificent super yachts in the world. Some of the yachts have changed ownership since the show, been renamed, or have undergone a refitting. Yet, most look like they did from the show.

But beyond the name and maybe a few changes to the interior, there aren’t many differences. All of the water toys, Jacuzzis and stunning outdoor dining areas are what you’ll find on the yachts available for charter! So which charter yachts are available?

Here’s a more detailed look at the yachts featured on the original Below Deck:

Honor – Season 1

Lumiere yacht

Honor (which is now LUMIERE) kicked off the first season, and she put on a dazzling display. The yacht, originally built by Benetti in 1999, is one of the largest yachts ever featured on the show, and it was actually booked for a five-week charter for filming.

HONOR benefited from the new-found fame of the show. She sold after it aired for nearly $15 million, and the new owners completely refit her interiors and renamed the boat. Today, LUMIERE is a masterpiece of nautical engineering.

She features luxurious accommodations for up to 12 guests and an abundance of deck space, including a sprawling sun deck. The yacht also features a wide array of water toys (the slide was a struggle for the crew all season!).

Ohana – Season 2

Yacht Rhino

Season 2 took the crew on a tour of the British Virgin Islands and featured some familiar faces. Captain Lee, Chef Ben, and Bosun Eddie were back, much to the pleasure of fans. Yet, the yacht was completely different.

OHANA (real name is RHINO) was featured on the second season, a stunning 154-footer, with beautiful decks, a horseshoe outdoor bar, and a stunning outdoor sun deck. After the show aired in 2014, Ohana underwent an extensive retrofit.

She now features an updated interior with a decidedly modern, airy vibe, as well as new hardware, including a state-of-the-art stabilization system.

Eros – Season 3

Yacht Mustang Sally

EROS took centerstage in Season 3, and the 161-foot yacht, originally built for the founder of Tim Hortons, was one of the most luxurious featured on the show. The beautiful tri-deck, featured a stately saloon, a sky lounge Jacuzzi, and sleek exterior styling.

EROS – which was sold prior to the third season – has since been renamed and was also remodeled. She’s now known as Mustang Sally, and unfortunately, this is one of the few Below Deck charter yachts that’s not available for charter.

Valor – Seasons 4 & 5

yachts used for below deck

The stately VALOR was a fan favorite in Season 4 and 5. Built in 1990 by Dutch-based Feadship, the 154-foot VALOR featured a sprawling aft deck, perfect for sunset dinners and afternoon lounges. Plus, the ship – when featured on the show – had a range of water toys, including dual jet skis and a sleek, boutique hotel-inspired interior.

Like Mustang Sally, VALOR – which is now known as simply BG – isn’t available for charter. Yet, fans will always remember all the drama that took place on board.

Below Deck Mediterranean Yachts

Below Deck Mediterranean premiered in 2016, and through three seasons, the show has featured some of the Med’s best yachts. All of the yachts from the Mediterranean spin-off are available for charter, exactly how you see them on the show.

Ionian Princess – Season 1

Yacht Ionian Princess

Season 1 of Below Deck Mediterranean launched with a bang, featuring one of the strongest premieres for the franchise. Although there was plenty of drama throughout the season as the crew traveled around Greece, the beauty of IONIAN PRINCESS couldn’t be missed. The ship, which was originally built in the U.S. in 2005, featured a sleek, streamlined tri-deck design and gorgeous interiors.

The sun deck – where guests partied all season long – is one of the yacht’s star attractions, featuring a Jacuzzi with world-class views. Her interior, though, is one of the most stunning, featuring a chic design. The yacht also includes six cabins with accommodations for up to 12 guests.

Sirocco – Season 2

Sirocco yacht

Season 2 took the crew to Croatia, aboard SIROCCO. The Dutch-built yacht originally launched in 2006, and thanks to its unique two-tone, third-deck exterior, she was remembered for her striking exterior. All of the yacht’s features made great TV. From her incredible sun deck, to the African chic interior, and all of the many water toys, SIROCCO’s impressive design and amenities stood out.

Today, she’s available for charter throughout the Mediterranean. A few unique features include a sun deck gym, an alfresco party deck, a theatre, and a wide array of water toys.

Talisman Maiton – Season 3

Talisman

Named for an island in Thailand, TAILSMAN MAITON is a stunning tri-deck that cruises the pristine waters of Italy and all of the Mediterranean. The largest to ever be featured on the show, TAILSMAN is truly incredible.

The yacht accommodates 12 guests, in 6 beautifully appointed rooms. There’s a master suite, as well as 1 VIP stateroom, and four smaller cabins. The yacht was built in 2006, but most recently refit in 2016 with a timeless Art Deco aesthetic. The yacht also features a sundeck spa pool with a beautiful bar, a full-service gym, and an observation deck with panoramic views.

How Long Are the Below Deck Charters?

Here’s a little-known secret about Below Deck: The “charter season” on the show is just a few weeks. In fact, the yachts are actually booked for about six weeks, and their regular crews are sent home. In other words, the charters on Below Deck are actually a charter within a charter!

Each of the Below Deck charters last just a few days, and each episode features new charter guests.

Below Deck Yacht Rental Costs

Hiring a yacht from Below Deck isn’t cheap. The majority cost in the neighborhood of $150,000 per week. Yet, that charter rate doesn’t include expenses, including fuel, dockage fees, and taxes.

Yet, for that price, you’ll get a truly world-class experience. The crews of each of these yachts provide first-class service and all of the boats are fully loaded with amenities. There’s nothing quite like it in the world. And by hiring one of these superyachts, you’ll also have bragging rights for chartering a yacht featured on a TV show!

I lived ‘Below Deck’ on a luxury yacht — here’s what you need to know

Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.

In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.

But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.

A tip on tipping

My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.

According to Zvonimir Androi, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.

So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.

What’s up, dock?

In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.

I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.

“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”

Play it cool

Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.

Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.

Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.

“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”

Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.

That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.

Asking for it

“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.

While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.

For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.

“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, etc.” said Androi. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”

Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.

Yachting on a budget

Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.

If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.

Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Sicily yacht sinking LIVE: Underwater vehicles used in bid to access cabins in search for Mike Lynch and others missing

LIVE – Updated at 11:06

A "complex" search for six people missing after a luxury yacht sank in a tornado off the coast of Sicily entered a third day on Wednesday.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , and four others are missing following the tragedy that happened in the early hours of Monday.

The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that they may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

David Tabizel, who set up software firm Autonomy with Mr Lynch, has told Sky News: "I hope there's a miracle about to occur". He added that he hopes Mr Lynch has "found an air pocket.”

The yacht – named the Bayesian – was moored half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank rapidly in severe weather, around 5am local time on Monday.

Firefighter divers have reached parts of the sunken vessel, which is at a depth of around 49m, but have not yet managed to access the cabins of the boat, where it is thought the missing people are trapped. They are understood to be using a remote controlled vehicle to help assist the search.

See below for the latest updates.

  • Divers face 'complex' task as they attempt to access cabins after smashing into hull
  • Friend and associate of Mike Lynch hoping for 'miracle' as six remain missing
  • Mystery surrounds why Bayesian sank so quickly, but theories abound
  • British mother and baby were 'sleeping on deck of yacht' when storm hit

Search teams 'aided by remote controlled vehicles'

Pictured: emergency services at scene on third day of search, more inspections of sunken yacht carried out.

Search crews have this morning carried out further inspections of the luxury yacht Bayesian, which is lying on the sea bed around 49m below the surface of the sea, with six missing people feared trapped inside.Fire crews from the Vigili del Fuoco said they have been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search, the Italian Coastguard has said.

British marine accident investigators expected to examine site today

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have arrived in Porticello where they are expected to look at the site of the sinking.

They are understood to have arrived yesterday and are expected to carry out a “preliminary assessment” of the site, off the coast of Porticello, sometime today.

The MAIB is understood to be looking into what happened because the sailing yacht Bayesian was flying a British flag.

The Italian Coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people.

'We are alive by a miracle' say survivors

Survivors of the tragedy say they managed to escape “by a miracle”.

Staff members Leah Randall, a 20-year-old South African, and Kaja Chichen, a 22-year-old German, are among the 15 people who were rescued from a lifeboat.

“We are alive by a miracle,” they are quoted by Italian news agency ANSA as saying, through tears. “It was terrible.”

Survivors are recuperating at a hotel complex in Porticello where authorities are gathering witness statements.

Who are the six missing people?

Of the yacht’s 22 passengers and crew, six people remain missing. Fifteen others escaped on a lifeboat, while one man was sadly found dead.

Those missing are:

  • Mike Lynch , a well-known British tech tycoon who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996. He was cleared in June of conducting a massive fraud relating to Autonomy’s $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to Hewlett Packard. He is understood to have organised the yacht trip as a celebration for friends, colleagues, and lawyers after he was cleared.
  • Hannah Lynch , 18-year-old daughter of Mike Lynch. Hannah formerly attended west London private school Latymer Upper Schoo l, and had reportedly earned a place to read English at Oxford University.
  • Jonathan Bloome r, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman and non-executive chairman of insurance firm Hiscox. He is understood to be a close friend of Mr Lynch.
  • Judy Bloomer , wife of Mr Bloomer. She has been a trustee of UK gynaecological cancer research charity The Eve Appeal for more than 20 years and has been hailed a “brilliant champion for women’s health”.
  • Christopher Morvillo , a partner at law firm Clifford Chance, who worked on Mr Lynch's fraud case to help secure the tycoon's acquittal in June.
  • Neda Morvillo , jewellery designer and wife of Mr Morvillo

Bayesian was sunk by 'black swan' weather event, says expert

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, says the Bayesian was the victim of a "high impact" and rare weather event.

"Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as, like, a black swan event," he told news agency Reuters.

"And even outside of the maritime industry, all industries struggle with the black swan events."

A ‘black swan’ event is an unexpected or hard-to-predict event that has severe consequences.

It is believed the Bayesian was hit by a waterspout - a phenomenon in which a whirling column of air, water and mist, forms over bodies of water . They share the same characteristics as tornadoes.

Mr Schanck says he is confident authorities will "get to the bottom" of what caused the shipwreck, thanks to the accounts of survivors, witnesses, and examination of the ship, which appears to have remained intact on the seabed.

Video shows search teams diving late into the night

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, has shared video on X that shows its expert divers searching late into the night on Tuesday as they worked to access the Bayesian’s cabins.

The search “ended late yesterday evening and at first light the operations at sea resumed”, said the fire service in a post written in Italian. “The search for the six missing people...continues”.

Twin of missing bank boss has 'fingers crossed' for positive outcome

Jeremy Bloomer - whose twin brother, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, is among the missing - has said he is still hoping for a positive outcome.

"It's a slow process and it will take time,” he told the BBC. “So there might be air pockets, but we don't know. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed.”

The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank. But as time passes, hopes of this outcome are fading.

Survivors 'recounted five minutes of darkness' as stricken yacht sank

A doctor who treated the 15 survivors of Monday’s yacht sinking has described the “apocalyptic scenes” passengers and crew faced as the vessel went down.

Dr Fabio Genco, from the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told BBC's Newsnight his primary concern had been to treat the one-year-old British baby who had been thrown overboard but was saved from drowning by her mother, Charlotte Golunski.

"The word that the mother and all the injured kept repeating was the 'darkness' during the shipwreck," Dr Genco told Newsnight.

"They spoke of about five minutes, from three to five minutes, from the moment the boat was lifted, raised by the waves of the sea until it sank."

Search crews are reportedly using remote controlled vehicles, to help them reach rooms of the wrecked yacht where it is thought the six missing people are trapped.

Expert divers are working to reach the cabins of the Bayesian - which is on the sea bed at a depth of around 50m - but are each limited to about 12 minutes below the water before they must resurface.

They are being helped by remote controlled vehicles that are able to operate on the ocean’s floor for longer than the divers, according to the BBC.

Photos show divers preparing to head to wreck of yacht

Specialist divers from Italy’s fire brigade, who have been leading the search effort, have been pictured at the port of Porticello this morning as they prepare to head out to the scene of the wreck.

As we reported earlier, they will be resuming their efforts to access the Bayesian’s cabins, where the six missing people are thought to be trapped.

Mystery still surrounds how and why yacht sank so quickly, but theories abound

How and why the 56-metre luxury yacht sank so quickly has not yet been established, but theories have abounded.

Bayesian was moored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it was hit by violent weather shortly before 5am local time (4am in the UK) on Monday - reportedly sinking in the dark in just “two minutes”.

Another yacht, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell, was anchored nearby. But it weathered the storm after its captain, Karsten Borner, turned on the engine, to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.

Mr Borner said he did not know if the crew of the Bayesian had managed to switch on its engines. "I don't think they did things wrong, I think they were surprised by the power of the storm," he told Reuters.

"I only know that they went flat with the mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes," he said, adding that the storm was "very violent, very intense," bringing in "a lot of water and I think a turning system like a tornado."

James Catfield, who captained Bayesian, spoke to Italian news outlet La Repubblica from his hospital room following the tragedy. He said only: “We didn’t see it coming.”

Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic university, said a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking in a huge amount of water.

He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water.

There has also been speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.

But a British industry expert said it should have taken hours for the Bayesian to fill up with enough water to sink it, making its rapid demise incomprehensible.

"I don't think the industry has ever faced anything like this. It's a horror story," he told news agency Reuters said, declining to be named.

Rescuers facing 'complex' task as they try to enter cabins

Rescuers are today set to resume their efforts to access the cabins of the sunken Bayesian.

Divers yesterday managed to enter the hull of the boat by breaking through a window made of three-centimetre glass using jacks made by a local blacksmith, local news outlet Giornale di Sicilia reported.

They reportedly then managed to access some communal areas, but at the point when yesterday’s search was called off, had not yet managed to reach the yacht’s cabins.

Rescue crews believe the six missing tourists will be found in the cabins, but a “world” of debris has so far blocked access to the rooms.

Specialist divers from Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, are leading the search mission.

It describes the operation as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts. The Bayesian is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres.

Wife and mother of missing Brits in 'state of shock and sadness'

Angela Bacares - wife of tech tycoon Mike Lynch and mother of 18-year-old Hannah, both of whom are missing - is one of 15 people who escaped Monday’s tragedy on a lifeboat.

Ms Bacares is in a "state of shock and sadness" as she awaits news, The Mirror has reported.

She has reportedly been joined by the couple's elder daughter, who was not aboard the boat.

Ms Bacares previously told how she and Mr Lynch had been asleep in their cabin when the yacht “tilted” suddenly as a storm hit in the early hours of Monday, waking them.

She rose to investigate, when the yacht’s glass windows smashed, throwing those on board into confusion. The Bayesian is said to have sunk within a matter of minutes.

Friend of Mike Lynch hoping for 'miracle'

David Tabizel, who co-founded software company Autonomy with Mike Lynch in 1996, has told Sky News: “I hope there's a miracle about to occur."The Italian Coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing, including technology tycoon Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

Mr Tabizel told Sky News: “If anyone has the resilience to survive this - he [Mr Lynch] does. And I hope he's found an air pocket.”

"He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing,” he added, saying he is “heartbroken for him and his family”.Mr Lynch - known as the ‘Bill Gates of Britain’ - was cleared in June of conducting a massive fraud relating to the $11bn (£8.64bn) sale of Autonomy to US company Hewlett Packard.

The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

British mother and baby were 'asleep on deck of yacht' when storm hit

British mother Charlotte Golunski is among the 15 people who survived Monday’s tragedy - along with her husband and their one-year-old daughter Sofia.

It has now emerged she and and her baby were asleep on the deck of the luxury boat when the storm hit and they were thown into the sea.

The head of paediatric care at the Palermo hospital where Sofia was treated told Sky News: “She said that she was sleeping with the child on deck while her husband was a little further away in another part of the boat and she felt the oscillations of the ship.

"In an instant it was dark and she found herself in the water in just a few minutes. She said she tried to hold on to the child but lost the child from her grip for three seconds.

"She then managed to catch her in the water."

Mrs Golunski previously told Italian news outlet la Repubblica how she fought to keep her baby from drowning after finding themselves in the darkened sea.

“For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves,” she told the newspaper.

“I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.”

Mrs Golunski is understood to be a partner at Mike Lynch’s firm Invoke Capital.

She, her husband, and their daughter were all discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

Search to enter third day

Good morning, and welcome to the Standard’s live blog.

It has now been more than 50 hours since the Bayesian superyacht sank off the northern coast of Sicily, with 22 crew and guests on board.

Six people including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah remain missing.

A major search operation has been underway since early on Monday, when the yacht sank after being hit by what is believed to have been a waterspout - a tornado at sea.

Rescuers will today be resuming their efforts to access the cabins of the sunken vessel, where the six missing people are thought to be trapped.

Fifteen other people survived the tragedy and escaped on a lifeboat, while one man was found dead.

We will be bringing you all the latest updates throughout the day, as the tense operation continues.

Below Deck Med fans were disgusted at the way he spoke to and acted with Bri in the bathroom stall.

“Get in a position in a toilet stall? What a sweet talker Joe is. Ewwww! #belowdeckmed,” wrote one X user.

A different X was SMH at his bathroom antics with Bri.

Those are just a few examples of the backlash Joe Bradley has rightfully earned for his behavior on Below Deck Med.

Not that Bri Muller and Elena Dubaich are innocent, but Joe has definitely led them on, and honesty, is he even worth it?

As Monsters and Critics previously reported, the end of Below Deck Med Season 9 is almost here, so hopefully, that means Joe will have to answer for his actions soon.

What do you think of Joe being compared to Gary?

Below Deck Med airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-9 are streaming on Peacock.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in a matter of minutes with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.

The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, the Italian coastguard said. Crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. They are all missing.

The yacht's captain James Calfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

Breaking news, bayesian yacht sinking live updates: search and rescue teams confirm recovered body is superyacht’s chef.

Crews are working relentlessly to find missing passengers of the doomed Bayesian yacht that capsized off the coast of Italy during a violent storm on Monday.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

The 160-foot luxury sailboat with 22 people aboard sank off the port of Porticello when the storm struck at sunrise Monday, the Italian coast guard said.

Fifteen of the ship’s passengers and crew have survived, including a mother who was clutching her 1-year-old daughter above her head to keep her from drowning.

The search for those missing has been slow because the Bayesian now sits 50 meters below the surface, where divers can only stay for up to 12 minutes, fire rescue officials said in a statement Tuesday.

‘Below Deck’s 8 Worst Guests Of All-Time: From Jill Zarin To Delores The Midnight Swimmer

Where to stream:.

  • Captain Lee

‘Below Deck’ Alum Captain Lee Rosbach Doesn’t Hold Back About Why His Relationship With ‘Summer House’ Star Carl Radke Disintegrated: “It Didn’t Sit Well With Me”

Captain lee rosbach enters his true-crime era with oxygen’s ‘deadly waters’, ‘below deck’ alum captain lee rosbach teams up with oxygen for new true-crime series ‘deadly waters with captain lee’: watch the trailer , ‘below deck’ chief stew fraser olender has a “love interest” of his own this season: “i’ve always been a third wheel”.

Demanding charter guests are a given while working on a mega-yacht — and the various Below Deck crews over the years have certainly experienced their fair share of them. Whether it’s Jill Zarin requesting special ice for her Diet Cokes or Timothy Sykes retracting a portion of the crew’s tip right in front of Captain Lee Rosbach , the yachties are always in for some kind of treat — or headache.

In the 11 seasons of Below Deck, nine seasons of Below Deck Mediterranean , four seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and two seasons of Below Deck Down Under , Captain Lee, Captain Sandy Yawn , Captain Kerry Titheradge , Captain Glenn Shephard , Captain Jason Chambers and their staffs have encountered plenty of high-maintenance guests aboard their respective vessels.

We somehow managed to pick a handful of guests who have infamously given the crew members a run for their money — but let it be known that it was no easy task to narrow down the abundant slate of finicky charters.

Aside from the ones we previously mentioned, we can’t forget the time lawyer Erica Rose and her husband caused quite the splash on Below Deck Sailing Yacht with their obnoxious and combative criticism of the chef’s food. Or when Below Deck chef Rachel Hargrove was forced to concoct blended versions of each meal (lobster included) to appease a recently injured woman who had her jaw wired shut.

In case you need more of a refresher, we gathered a roundup of eight of the most difficult charter guests in Below Deck history. Check them out below!

Jill Zarin ( Below Deck Season 11, Episode 9)

The Below Deck crew was just about ready to make Jill Zarin walk the plank when she appeared as a guest of the primary in a Season 11 episode. The Real Housewives of New York City alum had the interior team frazzled as she complained about everything from the food to the lack of toiletry baskets in each cabin. She even suggested that chief stew Fraser Olender purchase a button so she could call on him any time she had a request. And it bears repeating that she wasn’t even the primary guest!

Barbie Pascual described Zarin as a “freeloading guest who’s extremely demanding,” while Olender said, “Jill is crawling into my brain and eating away at my soul.”

Delores ( Below Deck Season 8, Episode 11)

Captain Lee was heated when guest Delores defied his commands and drunkenly jumped into the water in the middle of the night. The Below Deck icon told the primary guests that their “charter [was] over,” before forcing his crew to stand guard outside Delores’ room to make sure she didn’t come out again. “First thing in the morning, I’ll drag everybody’s ass back to the dock and kick their ass to the curb,” he said in his confessional. “We’re not taking those risks. Not on my boat.”

The next morning, Lee allowed the primaries to remain on the yacht as long as they sent Delores packing.

Erica Rose and Charles Sanders ( Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 3, Episode 4)

American lawyer Erica Rose and her obnoxious husband Charles Sanders were one of the worst primaries the Below Deck franchise has encountered to date. During their stay on the sailing yacht, Sanders aggressively complained about his food, claiming McDonald’s could’ve served a better omelet than the high-end chef on board. He also bickered with their fellow guests, nearly causing a physical fight when he referred to his friend’s wife as a “bitch.” Plus, someone stained the $50,000 white couch with tan body makeup. And just when everyone thought things couldn’t get any worse, they left an insultingly low tip ($6,500, to be exact) for the entire crew to split.

Timothy Sykes ( Below Deck Season 2, Episode 10)

Even Captain Lee remembers Timothy Sykes as the worst charter guest he’s ever dealt with. Sykes, a 32-year-old entrepreneur who wears shirts with his own name on them, flew to the dock via helicopter with his 19-year-old girlfriend. After spending most of his trip complaining about the yacht’s internet issues and chef Ben Robinson’s food, he infamously deducted $5,000 off the tip, which was initially a whopping $22,000.

Chelsea ( Below Deck Season 9, Episode 9)

Chef Rachel Hargrove had her work cut out for her when one of the primary guests in Below Deck Season 9, Episode 9 came onboard with her jaw wired shut. Chelsea, who had recently suffered a bicycle accident, had multiple “meltdowns” when her liquified food did not come out at the same time as everyone else’s meals.

Mahisha Dellinger ( Below Deck Med Season 9, Episode 11)

Aesha Scott couldn’t have been happier that television host Mahisha Dellinger booked a short charter. Upon entering the mega-yacht, Dellinger forced the interior team to move the sky deck’s couches, which she called an “eye sore,” so she and her friends could take photos. Nothing was quite right for Dellinger, who later complained that the caviar tasted like a “washcloth.” Her friend Neysla Paltsev even attempted to jump on the bandwagon by criticizing the utensils they were provided at dinner. When Scott proved her wrong, Paltsev fired back that their “caviar service sucked.”

Athena Lucene ( Below Deck Med Season 6, Episode 7)

Athena Lucene certainly wasn’t an awful guest, but she sure did keep the crew on their toes. Hosting an entrepreneur retreat for her clients, Lucene expected immediate gratification at all times. When chef Matthew Shea held off a few extra minutes on dinner to wait for all the guests to sit down at the table, an impatient Lucene took it upon herself to go into the galley and ask what the holdup was. She then forced chief stew Katie Flood to move her seat to the head of the table as she felt “awkward” sitting on the side, before requesting that the already-behind chef whip up a last-minute salad for everyone. Lucene was also “disappointed” with the cakes Shea decorated, though, to be fair, they were underwhelming.

Brandy ( Below Deck Season 7, Episodes 3 & 4)

The Below Deck crew has dealt with tons of drunk charter guests. But Brandy, who appeared in the show’s seventh season, might have been the most terrifying. Having clearly gone a tad overboard on the champagne (no pun intended), an unconscious Brandy was swiftly hauled away from the beach picnic to see a medic on the yacht. However, her friends seemed unfazed as they didn’t let her episode ruin their time on the island.

Each Below Deck series is currently streaming on Peacock .
