Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A cuddy/cabin version, the DOLPHIN 17C, was also available. Photo from manufacturers brochure. Drawing from Bill Dakin, owner of a 1972 Dolphin 17. First built by Universal Plastic Products, Houston. TX. which moved operations to Coffeyville KS, then Silverline.

Experience with Dolphin 17 or similar?

  • Add to quote

I found only one reference at this forum to the Silverline Dolphin 17. I will read the stickies with advice on boat shopping again. Looking for any current or past owners of the Silverline Dolphin 17 or 17C (cabin version). Would like to chat a little about sailing characteristics of the boat and particulars to look for when shopping. Especially curious about two things: 1) Helm balance with centerboard partially retracted, because I will have it often in shallow water where the full 4.25' draft is chancey. 2) Tenderness when sailed solo. Here are particulars on the boat. Are there other more common comparable boats that you think might offer insight? I am looking at the cabin version of this boat as one fairly comparable to the Daysailer, as my club has a racing fleet of those. I don't want a DS because I prefer a usable locking cuddy and a boat that will solo a bit better and be a bit more comfortable with my wife aboard. So while I won't race, I at least can play amongst the herd. LOA = 16.75' DWL = 15' Beam = 6' Draft up = 8" Draft down = 4.25' Mast height over waterline = about 22.5' Displacement = about 825 pounds Ballast= 150-200 pounds along centerboard trunk, concrete or lead ingots Centerboard = alloy or fiberglass, unweighted Sail area = 130 sf, about evenly split between jib and main P-DN = 97.5

I ended up getting two of these. One an open version for parts, as the owner had botched a hull repair beyond what I thought worth fixing. The second a cabin version. I am putting the slightly larger rig of the first onto the second and redesigning the centerboard retraction.

We have a 1972 model year made not by Silverline but Universal Plastic Products in Houston. I'm just about to finish some tune-ups from being a landlubber for 20 years. Yes it's a tender boat with one person as you've probably found out by now. Freeboard and hull design will allow her fast to heel. I sure wish we had a spinnaker now that I've seen a 470 with one. We have a trap set up that allows you to use that 125.65 square feet. There is a chance I will add a bracket to the rudder casting to give us the ability to motor with a 2.5 Suzuki.

Thanks for your reply. Never got it on the water last summer; spent my allotted sailboat time refurbushing the DaySailer I bought first, to resell and get even. My guess is that for best speed we want this to heel a bit to stretch the waterline forward on that bow. Got the taller mast up in my barn to measure rigging changes. It will have the backstay from the open version that is lacking on the cabin version. I like that, firms it up and I can hang the boom from the backstay for a cockpit tent/cover. Plenty of mast for even the larger of the two jibs, so I am rigging it as a fractional. The forestay will be 28" below the top of the mast and about 6" behind normal spot. That space plus homemade roller furler frees the bow plate and jib halyard for a spinnaker/snuffer I bought. I'll be more comfortable flying that kite with a backstay. Might be interesting figuring how to run spinnaker sheets to the somewhat skinny tail. Also will have both upper and lower shrouds on the sides from the open version. That could help if I added a trap? And of my two tillers, I am using one that has a 3 foot extension. Currently reworking the centerboard. It used a winch in the cabin, but both holes and the clamp for ropes are in the bulkhead. I need to be able to adjust from the cockpit. Digging around I have found no ballast. Putting in a couple of batteries that should help. And kinda weird, on port side of the hull beneath the front of the cockpit is a raised section about 2" tall and a foot fore-aft. Plywood covered by glass. But no match on starboard. Just behind is another molded beam on both sides. That is where ballast should be, and mine is a year that should have it. Maybe someone ended the day there and forgot. Mine already has a homemade hinged steel motor mount on the rear deck, very junky, tossing most of it. But it mounts to the deck with stainless sliding plates, very light and cool, that I will rework. I have an old 3hp Johnson but might switch to electric troller since I have batteries on board. From my searches, it seems these boats started at UPP, so you have one of the first. Then a few years as Silverline in Moorehead MN (mine is 1977) and finally a couple years as Midwest Dolphin in Independence MO 1982-83. Here are pseudo links to info on the Silverline years. Sorry I can't post links yet. Remove the under_line_spots. ht_tp://ww_w.silverlineboats.o_rg/sail.h_tm ... owner's manual! ht_tp://ww_w.bosscatlegacy.c_om/acproto/indexwatersilverline02.h_tm ... 74 through 77; not much info, but interesting to note weight changes.

Hey, reaching out for a lifeline here - we recently bought a Dolphin 17 but the owner can't seem to find the rudder. Is it possible to get measurements in order to craft a replacement. Thanks in advance!

About the dolphin 17  .

The Dolphin 17 is a recreational sailboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, including a backstay, aluminum spars, a spooned raked stem, a vertical transom, a transom-hung, kick-up fiberglass rudder controlled by a tiller with an extension and a retractable fiberglass centerboard. Unusually, the jib is not mounted to the forestay. The boat has a draft of 4.25 ft (1.30 m) with the centerboard extended and 1.08 ft (0.33 m) with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer or car roof rack. For sailing the design is equipped with a self-bailing cockpit, a mainsheet traveler and a boom vang. There are three stowage lockers fitted, two on either side and one in the stern of the boat. The design has a Portsmouth Yardstick racing average handicap of 97.8 and is normally raced with a crew of two sailors.

Dolphin 17 Super Skiff Pro

  • Updated: July 1, 2005

If you’ve traveled to almost any bonefish destination around the Caribbean, chances are you’ve fished out of a Dolphin Super Skiff. It was one of the first technical poling skiffs created, and its design has proven reliable and effective for almost four decades. Dolphin decided to step things up a bit with the introduction of its faster, long-range 17-foot Super Skiff Pro. The company designed this boat so four anglers could fish comfortably all day, yet it’s light enough that you can pole it in 10 inches of water.

The new 17 Pro is built from three separate parts – the proprietary hull, the inner liner and the deck – that are made completely of composite materials and fused together using a special process to create a strong and durable one-piece unit. It also incorporates Kevlar and vacuum-bag infusion to ensure quality construction and finish throughout. Like all Dolphin Skiffs, the 17 Pro contains no wood, and the company backs the hull with a transferable 10-year warranty.   Dolphin got input on the design of this boat from hundreds of customers and guides, and the result is a functional and intelligent layout. The hull shape is a modified version of the high-performance deep-V from the 16-foot Super Skiff Pro, but it still affords a 10-inch draft and now boasts an 81-inch beam. This combination of draft and beam enables the boat to run over 40 mph with a 90-hp Evinrude E-Tec and to smoothly handle a 2-foot chop, but the boat is rated for up to a 140-hp engine.

Its large 32-gallon gas tank holds enough fuel to make even the longest runs possible. The oversize forward deck makes a perfect casting platform, while the in-floor cast-net storage and ample dry-storage compartments easily accommodate the gear of four anglers. Fore- and aft-facing undergunwale rod racks hold up to six fly rods on each side. Dolphin incorporated an ergonomically designed helm seat behind the center console that folds down to open the rear deck for additional casting room. The entire deck and the cockpit sole feature a molded-in nonskid surface to help you keep your footing when moving around the boat.

Silverline Dolphin 17 for sale in Overland Park, Kansas

Silverline Dolphin 17 - $1750 in Overland Park, Kansas

This Silverline Dolphin 17 has a big sail ratio with a 22' mast on a 17' boat. Integrated with rigging of a bigger sailboat with a steal metal center board for a low center of gravity, creates an excellent day sailer. Reef points on the primary sail plus a rolling jib, are terrific for strong wind conditions as well as a huge major sail along with a huge jib for light wind sailing. This sailboat has the qualities of a bigger sailboat in a smaller sized hassle-free day sailer. call. show contact details.

Hello everyone! As I mentioned above, I'm the proud new owner of a beautiful silverline dolphin 17 ft open sailboat. I'm completely new to the sailing world, but I have many years of small Powerboat experience. I'm looking for some help getting her ready for the water, as it appears most of the equipment is original (from 1976). I am really looking forward to getting her ship shape and back in the water, and I look forward to hearing from you all.

rgranger

Welcome Here is a little info on your boat https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/dolphin-17

Thank you very much! I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. I found a link to an original user manual, which was very helpful.

Looks like a fun boat. I thought it was humorous that the photo on sailboatdata.com showed 6 adults on the boat. Must have found that photo on an ad brochure. I'd like to see them try to actually sail a 17' boat with 6 adults on board. I find it hard to have 6 adults on my H26. Somebody is always in the way.

Yeah, I love the lines. And your right, pretty sure that boat was stationary when the pic was taken. I will be having 2 adults/2 children on board at most.

Dolphin 16' vs 17' Super Skiff Pro

dolphin 17 sailboat

  • Add to quote

I've been considering a few factors when purchasing my first skiff. Please let me know your thoughts between the Dolphin 16' vs 17' Super Skiff Pro powered with a Yamaha F70, Yamaha 90 SHO or Yamaha 115 SHO. Questions to answer: Is it a comfortable ride, dry, and easy to pole while remaining quiet while fishing? Does it spin easily or does it glide into the wind? Is it stable and safe? Lightweight? Shallow draft? I'm looking to fish between Biscayne Bay, Flamingo, Lake Okeechobee and the lower keys with 2-3 people including myself on average.

You have been ALL OVER THE PLACE. Sounds like you are conflicted about what you really want. You really do need to get out in SoFlo waters with some of these skiffs you’re asking about and see what jives for you. Don’t get sucked into the lightest most technical aspect because you don’t really need it down here unless you are truly a specialist but if that was the case then you’d already know. Dolphins are also great SoFlo boats but not like anything else you’ve been “loving”. Good luck…

The best is to get on one and try it. I rebuilt a 16 super skiff and love it when we travel down there. I feel it’s good on the pole(I pole 100% of the time) it’s an honest 9-10” draft boat with people. It’s not the driest boat but when it’s blowing 20+mph in a quartering sea I think most boats would. I got my first permit and bonefish off of super skiff boats so there some nastalga there for me.

Where exactly on the hull is that "crack?" Boats develop cracks in the gel coat in various places all the time. I have seen them in the bottom of compartments, around the transom, especially around corners in the deck or cockpit, and many other places. They are generally no big deal at all, and you can expect them at some point. Gel coat doesn't flex very well and will crack in areas that may have a bit of flex naturally in a boat. That boat looks sharp
