Introducing the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” for the Volvo Ocean Race

IWC prolongs their partnership with the Volvo Ocean Race and emphasizes this by introducing a new special edition, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer”. For the second time IWC will be the Official Timekeeper and sponsor of the IWC 24 hour Speed Record Challenge. While the previous edition for the Volvo Ocean Race sported a technical style and was executed in titanium, the new Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is made in stainless steel and has much more classic looks.

The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is the second Yacht Club dedicated to the partnership between IWC and the Volvo Ocean Race and is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. Its silver-plated dial has applied blued numerals, blued hands and the hour indices are coated with Super-LumiNova. The watch measures 45.4 mm in diameter and comes on a black rubber strap featuring an alligator leather inlay. It’s water-resistant to 6 bar (comparable to a depth of 60 meters), meaning it’s perfectly fit for use in and around water, however when you want to go deep-sea diving we suggest you opt for an IWC Aquatimer .

Inside ticks the IWC-manufactured calibre 89361 (the same that can be found in the IWC Portuguese Chronograph Classic ref. 3904 ), featuring a flyback function and which measures time intervals of up to 12 hours, shown by an hour and minute hand, in the subdial at 12 o’clock. At 6 o’clock is the small second hand and the date is visible through an aperture at 3 o’clock. The movement has 68 hours of power reserve and features IWC’s double-pawl winding system. By the way, did you know that this is the only Portuguese model with a crown protector?

Befitting the sailing theme, the rotor looks like a ship’s wheel, and is visible through the sapphire case back. Engraved around that sapphire pane, is “IWC PORTUGIESER YACHT CLUB OCEAN RACER • ONE OUT OF 1000”. This model is called “Portuguese” in English, but in German, the language spoken in Schaffhausen, it is “Portugieser”. That’s why the case back is engraved with the German “PORTUGIESER” and not the English name for this watch.

“ The Volvo Ocean Race stretches the world’s best sailing crews to their limits ,” says IWC CEO Georges Kern. “ We are proud that for the second time we are the event’s Official Timekeeper, partners to the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team and sponsors of the 24-hour speed record: it puts us at the very centre of international sailing. ”

The 2014 Volvo Ocean Race will start in Alicante, in October 2014, and the final destination is Gothenburg, where the race ends in June 2015. Seven teams will be battling for victory under the most extreme conditions.

The 2011-2012 IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Volvo Ocean Race edition was developed to acknowledge the Volvo Ocean Race Challenge, which involved traversing the globe in nine legs and included six different vessels. As a sponsor of the challenge, it was only natural that IWC would release a commemorative timepiece. The IW390212 offers a bold stance on the wrist without weighing it down via a 45.4mm titanium case diameter and a thickness of just 14.5mm, which is relatively thin considering the broad stance of the case itself. A black carbon fiber dial complements the titanium case and black rubber strap bracelet nicely and is set with silver Arabic markers, luminous sword-shaped hands, and a bold red seconds hand. Produced in limited quantities, this is your chance to add a distinct used IWC to your watch box.

IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition Watch For Volvo Ocean Race

IWC recently announced a new version of their Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph watch that came out about two years ago. The great looking piece is probably one of my top pics from the brand at this time and now is featured in an even more sporty skin. This version is done in collection with the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012. Beyond that I guess a new watch will be made?

The rear of the watch has “Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012” engraved on the back. IWC is the officially timekeeper for the boat race events. In the race IWC is also the official sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team. Interesting that they sponsor the event and one of the teams.

The titanium case and carbon fiber dial look good together and feel fitting with the high-end racing boats. These performance machines operate thanks to very capable sailors and seconds count when needed to start the race. While not a traditional regatta timer, the first 10 minutes of the chronograph counter are specially colored to help with calculating how much time before the race starts.

Interestingly enough the Volvo Ocean Race is an around-the-world race. I am not sure exactly how that works out, but it is a pretty grueling event for the sailors (best to have a nice watch). Though of course the majority of these watches will go on the wrists of non-sailors who admire their work. The watch case is 45.4mm wide and here in titanium. It has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 60 meters.

Through the rear of the watch you can see the very pretty in-house made IWC caliber 89361 automatic movement. There are two hands in the upper chronograph register, which allows this to be a full 12 hour chronograph, but enjoy the good look of only two subdials. The movement has a power reserve of almost three days. The watch comes attached to a black rubber strap (love that strong looking clasp).

IWC makes it clear that this is a limited production watch as it is for the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. Though they don’t indicate how many pieces exactly will be made. Reference number for this IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition “Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012” watch is IW390212. Look for it soon. Price is $15,800 .

11 legs for a total 38.3739 nautical miles , equal to more than 70.000km that involve 7 sailing teams from around the world. These are, in a nutshell, the numbers behind a legendary challenge once known as the Whitebread Round the World Race , perhaps the most challenging among sailing competitions: it is today called the Volvo Ocean Race , but nothing has lost of its appeal and toughness and may be regarded to as the 24 Hours of Le Mans among sailing competitions.

If you now compare this size with other chronos one in the benchmark, you soon realize the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Ocean Racer ’s thickness is among the lowest ones on the market as many other ones stop at least at 15mm , if not going over 16mm . We all know case size is also about design but, when it comes to chrono making, it is often due to the size of the movement, that in any Yacht Club is the in-house 89361 , equipped with a Fly-back function and the IWC glorious double-pawl mechanism.
