An excellent experience that exceeded all expectations! The staff on board were all so kind and could not have done more for us. They even produced a birthday cake with 24hrs notice from my husband! Communication was not the easiest but we got by! The food was excellent and there was plenty of it.

We had an amazing wale watching boat trip. The journey started with an early morning cruise out to the deep sea. A very solid and spacious vessel. Breakfast on board was delicious. All the crew were friendly and helpful.

We came to Mirissa for whale watching. We realized that the most popular kind of shared boat here is a large double decker with 40-150 people on board (depending on the company). We were recommended sail lanka as they have these catamarans which carry <=20 people.

We went on the yacht cruise in Trincomalee to see whales and dolphins, but we also went snorkeling too. Furthermore, this was by far the most ethical way you could see the whales a dolphins compared to the smaller speed boats, which I genuinely struggled with. However, Sail Lanka did not chase the animals or 'hunt them' down.

We spent a wonderful week sailing through the South Coast of Sri Lanka, visiting the old town of Galle, and other interesting places such as fishermen's towns and Buddhist temples. Wales watching was part of our holiday but we weren’t lucky enough to see them.

Great crew, delicious and unpretentious snacks, and super fun all round. We went through sun and storms, and although the water was a little murky the snorkelling was ace.

They were always there to help and make sure we were ok. Life vests were provided for the dinghy trip to the catamaran and for all water activities. Food was delicious and they were prepared for the rain and it meant our experience was not affected. We had fun on the net and in all the activities.

A 3 hoors during boattrip was top, a beautiful catamaran, very nice people We saw nice corals and beautiful fishes. With a snack, plenty of cold water, ... done SUPping the first time.

We went out on the morning 3 hour sailing trip and absolutely loved it. There were 2 other families with us on the trip, 6 adults and 6 kids in total. The staff were fantastic and always there to help the younger children (my son is 2 and there was also a 3 year old on board) navigate their way around the catamaran.

Superb, extraordinary, great service from a professional well trained crew and chef. We have chartered in Greece, Croatia, Tahiti and now Sri Lanka bad rage experience with Sail Lanka is equal to or better than all the other charters.

We went on the morning cruise from 9 to 12. They picked us up from the beach in front of the hotel with a small boat. There were 20 people on the ship at the same time and it didn't feel crowded at all. Drinks and a small snack are included in the price.

Food & Drinks on board the Ocean Diamond

There is one dining room located on the Lower Deck which operates an open seating policy and there’s one sitting for everyone at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This encourages passengers to mingle with their like-minded fellow Antarctic explorers.

While mealtimes may change due to landings and wildlife encounters, you’ll always be served three delicious meals a day. An assortment of freshly baked cookies and/or pastries are offered each afternoon. There is also a selection of hot and cold snacks available in the lounge during cocktail hour, expedition activities permitting.

Breakfasts and lunches are normally served buffet style on Ocean Diamond , while dinners are served plated. À la carte meals are made at the time of your order, allowing the chefs to prepare each dish to your individual needs. Working in a small kitchen, the chefs are able to monitor and control the quality of food being served, ensuring you receive top-quality meals during the course of your expedition.

The well-stocked bar on the ship is open to enjoy with your fellow Antarctic cruise passengers in the late morning, afternoon, and evening. Soft drinks, juices, and water are available at no cost, and beer and wine are offered with dinner. A selection of liquors, spirits, and premium beer, wine, and champagne is available and can be charged to your shipboard account.

Ocean Diamond's take on sustainable traveling

Foremost among our sustainability goals are actively reducing the impact and emission of our vessels, investing in new technology, and continuously improving our existing resources. We have also installed a new low-emission engine in our veteran vessel, Ortelius. This engine complies with all the latest environmental legislation. Another of our important commitments to sustainability is our use of low-sulfur marine gas oil (LSMGO), which has a sulfur content of less than 0.1 percent.\n\nWe limit onboard waste production by recycling as often as we can as well as banning single-use plastics. This ship does not use straws, plastic cups, or any individually wrapped butter, yogurt, and jam. This vessel has a water treatment system and desalination system that uses reverse osmosis, allowing us to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles on board. Rather, guests receive a reusable water bottle they can refill on the vessel. Bathrooms are equipped with biodegradable shampoo and soap in recycled packing, further limiting our use of plastics.

Reviews of Ocean Diamond

Ocean Diamond

The whole trip was simply incredible. Everything was perfect- everyone in the crew is not "only" the professional in his/her field but an amazing human being. All of them take their job as a mission and make a trip the most wonderful and unforgettable holiday of your lifetime. Special thanks to Dr.Paul for saving my partner from the acute sea sickness :) Beside that the food is equal to the dishes served in the best fine dining restaurants. Cabins are cozy and clean. Whole voyage is well thought and planned to the last detail- you do not waste a minute, the trip is worth every single penny. On the top of that you meet wonderful people from all over the world with whom you can party until the break of dawn - it was as if we knew them for years. Flawless! (Copied from Trip Advisor)

Quark Expeditions - Antarctic Peninsula

I recently spent 12 nights on the Ocean Diamond for an Antarctica trip. The trip itself was in my lifetime top 3, right up there with the Galapagos Islands and a South African safari. In fact, I've explained the trip to many people as a polar safari. Quark was very helpful and showed their expertise in polar cruising in the booking process, pre-departure and throughout the trip. I can't say enough wonderful things about both the hotel staff and the expedition team on the ship. I came in with high expectations and they were all exceeded. I felt like the expedition team spent the whole trip showing us their favorite place...probably because they were. Even late in the season, their passion was contagious. we knew the excursions would be amazing, but the onboard lecture series let us take so much more home from the experience. The Ocean Diamond itself is not the newest, shiniest ship in Quark's fleet, but the trade is for a cozy, lived-in ship with a lot of character. The ship is very comfortable, well maintained with plenty of comfortable common space and more spacious cabins than I had anticipated. We were in a triple cabin and had plenty of room to unpack all of our suitcases and stash them under the beds and each carve out our own bit of space in the cabin. We never felt like we were packed in, either in our cabin in particular or on the ship in general. The food was both plentiful and tasty, although an Antarctic cruise is obviously not a foodie destination. (Copied from Trip Advisor)

Quark Expeditions - Adelie Penguin

Quark Expeditions came recommended by a popular travel blogger, so I started following them as we wanted to save up to take a trip to Antarctica and South Georgia. Originally we had hoped to travel on their World Explorer ship, but because of a special offer we ended up on the Ocean Diamond. The ship itself is a little outdated and could use some maintenance, but overall it's very clean and comfortable. I have no complaints about Quark Expeditions. It's a very planned, safe, and well thought out experience. The rooms were comfortable, and the food was top notch. They have a shop on board, so if you are missing anything you may have forgotten or need. The entire staff is also amazing. You will love every minute of the trip. I guess the only negative is, the TV on board is so so (you have to rely on them to change the movies every so often), and you have to fork over like 100 bucks to use internet on your devices. Otherwise, you just have WhatsApp wifi access for free. (Copied from Trip Advisor)

Ocean diamond

This ship is not new, but certainly well maintained. Our cabin on the 5th deck was large enough and the service of making up our room multiple times a day was really nice. The 5th deck was also nice since we had direct access to the side decks. The ship had a nice enclosed, warm observation deck on the 7th level right above the bridge. It was also great that we were allowed in the bridge. One of my favorite spots however, was the large observation deck on the top of the ship, which seldom had many people on it. The food was also great, as we never went hungry with the ample snacks between meals. The food selection at the meals was always great and whatever we had was done well. Access to fresh salads everyday was appreciated. Most important however, is that all food was properly appropriated, stored and prepared as we never got sick, something that is always a worry on a ship. I can't imagine working in the kitchen while crossing the Drake Passage under the conditions we had, as we heard several large crashes as the ship swayed so strongly that I was thrown out of my chair in the dining room. Hebridean Sky is a small, all-suite expedition vessel. The ship was built in 1992 and refurbished in 2005. For our air-cruises, Hebridean Sky accommodates 75 passengers. The ship offers a classically elegant base for adventurous exploration in Antarctica. Suites in eight different categories of accommodation are spacious, with premium appointments throughout. Each Suite features a sitting area, a private bathroom, a picture window, and two twin beds that, on request, can be joined to form a queen-size bed (cabins 601 and 602 only offer a queen-size bed). A21 Magellan Explorer

Magellan Explorer

Welcome aboard the Magellan Explorer, an ultra-modern expedition cruise ship built for the Antarctic. An Antarctic trip aboard the Magellan Explorer is unlike the rest. Instead of boarding your cruise ship right away and spending long days crossing the Drake Passage to get to the Antarctica, you’ll take a two-hour plane ride from Punta Arenas straight to the continent itself. This flight will save you time, and you’ll be able to head straight to the Antarctic action. A Magellan Explorer is a pioneer air-cruise is designed for adventure and with your comfort in mind. To manage environmental impact, the Antarctic Treaty limits the numbers of visitors on shore to maximum 100 at one time. A Magellan Explorer air-cruise comfortably accommodates only 73 guests so everyone can go ashore at the same time. This means that you will spend more time ashore, rather than waiting your turn to disembark the ship. The Magellan Explorer cruise ship offers 7 different categories of accommodation, including dedicated single cabins. All cabins except for the Porthole cabins have a private balcony for your enjoyment. All cabins feature a wardrobe, an individually controlled heating system, a private bathroom, a sitting area, and heated floors. The Magellan Explorer cruise ship also features a beautiful glass-enclosed observation lounge deck for guests to awe over the incredible Antarctic views. Guests are welcome to take part in the polar discussions in the presentation room with state-of-the-art audio visual equipment. The polar cruise ship also offers a library, a boutique gym built by the professionals at Anytime Fitness, a sauna, and a medial clinic. The Magellan Explorer comes equipped with a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats, perfectly suited for an Antarctic adventure and a closer look at the flora and fauna. The observation deck aboard the cruise ship also leads to the bow of the ship where guests and crew can better spot marine wildlife. A Magellan Explorer air-cruise is the most modern way to explore the amazing Antarctic region. Time-saving, comfortable, and intimate, this air-cruise rethinks polar exploration for those who have a limited amount of travel time.

Ocean Diamond Review

Review of ocean diamond.

The 1974-built/2024- scrapped MV Ocean Diamond was previously owned by SunStone Ships (as "Diamond XI") and chartered to the Copenhagen -based Albatros Travel company specializing in polar expedition cruises and tours. Quark Expeditions (USA-based polar cruise travel company) also operated it under a time charter.

As an expedition vessel, Ocean Diamond had an ice-strengthened hull and two stabilizers, and as a cruise ship accommodated a maximum of 189 passengers.

MV Ocean Diamond cruise ship (Quark Expeditions)

The vessel (IMO number 7325629) was last Portugal- flagged (MMSI 255806403) and registered in Madeira . It was previously Bahamas-flagged (MMSI 311063900/registered in Nassau ) and before that was France-flagged (MMSI 578101000/registered in Wallis and Futuna ).

Renamed DIAMOND XI and registered as an accommodation ship, Ocean Diamond's AIS transmitted for the last time on August 25, 2024, at 19:07 UTC, showing the 50-year-old vessel at Aliaga Turkey where it was beached for scrapping.

History - construction and ownership

The superyacht's previous owner ( Compagnie du Ponant ) sold it in late-2011 to investors. In November 2012, it was contracted by Quark Expeditions for charter operations under the name "Ocean Diamond". The polar travel company Quark Expeditions (1991-founded) specializes in expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Arctic via icebreaking vessels (passenger ships with ice-strengthened hulls). Quark Expeditions became part of TUI Travel (UK) in 2007 and since 2016 has been owned by Travelopia Group Holdings Ltd (UK).

MV Ocean Diamond cruise ship (Quark Expeditions)

In April 2024 was announced that Bridgemans Services Group LP (2013-founded, Richmond BC Canada-based company) had purchased the vessel from SunStone Ships Inc (1990-founded, Miami, Florida USA-based cruise shipowner). Following the acquisition, the 40-year-old vessel (Diamond XI) was converted into a hotel ship/floatel.

Brian Grange Bridgemans Group's President) described the vessel as suitable for projects requiring premium accommodation space (up to 350 beds). The new shipowner intended to use it for chartering to companies working on projects in their initial stages or provide additional accommodation during peak workforce periods.

Bridgemans Floatels operates a fleet of former cruise vessels refitted into floating hotels. They are chartered by companies looking to quickly deploy accommodations to 100-1500 people working on inshore or offshore projects. The ships are fitted with full-service staterooms (providing modern hotel amenities and services) as well as fully-equipped onboard facilities like flexible business areas (meeting areas, conference rooms, private office spaces), Auditorium (media presentations, training sessions), Car Deck (large storage capacity and Ro-Ro deck access), Helideck (helicopter landing zone with direct access to the Infirmary).

Bridgemans Services Group has a division specializing in ship conversions/refits.

Ocean Diamond's new fleetmate was the former Tallink Isabelle ferry (now Isabelle X) .

Bridgeman's refurbishment of the vessel (in March 2024 at Gibdock Shipyard, Gibraltar UK ) included a Dining Room renovation, the creation of an Auditorium (capacity 200 seats), a gym and an office area (equipped with 45 PCs/workstations).

Shipboard facilities

Being one of the most eco-friendly and fastest cruise ships in Antarctica, Ocean Diamond is also one of the most comfortable ones. The 101 elegantly furnished cabins and suites all feature exterior views. There are also expansive common spaces, a spacious restaurant and club lounge.

The boat offers a wealth of adventure options, plus onboard interactions with photography instructors (dedicated photography enrichment program), yoga classes, aromatherapy treatments and massage therapy (wellness program). Zodiac cruising and landings, snowshoeing and hiking tours ashore are included in cruise fares, while kayaking is optional. After a day of exploration, guests can relax and browse DVDs or books in the well-stocked polar library.

The vessel's draft is only 16 ft (4,9 m) allowing access to remote islands and unique coastal destinations. The ship is powered by two WICHMANN marine diesel engines (total power output 7375 HP). The hull is ice class 1D. The ship has all 2 lifeboats, which are fully enclosed. Ship-to-shore communications are via Inmarsat Capsat Fleet 77 (satellite phone and Internet).

In addition to the lifeboats, MS Ocean Diamond carries a tender on davits (a crane-like device used for raising, and lowering the boats) located across the stern. The cruise ship also serves the "Expert in Residence" program, letting polar researchers, scientists, historians and other experts to undertake field work out of the ship. Passengers are allowed to assist. All landings include expedition jackets and rubber boots on loan.

Itineraries

Ocean Diamond cruises in Antarctica ( Antarctic Peninsula region). itineraries also visit the wildlife paradise of South Georgia Island and the remote Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) . Antarctica departures are out of Ushuaia (Argentina) and fly-cruise deals are offered from Buenos Aires .

In the summer, the ship operates on European itineraries (cruises in Iceland) with roundtrip departures from Reykjavik . These seasonal ship charters are since 2015 and by the local tour brand Iceland ProCruises (run by the Iceland ProTravel agency). In 2018 was introduced a new 7-day cruise itinerary program targeting the USA-Canada market. Most itineraries are 9-days and longer and visit port destinations in Iceland and Greenland.

Ocean Diamond Wiki

In February 2018, the company Iceland ProCruises announced its ship charter contract with the Ocean Diamond vessel to be extended through 2022. Iceland ProCruises charters MS Ocean Diamond since 2014, and its bookings have a steady annual increase of ~20%.

Season 2018 started with 3x Around Iceland (full island circumnavigation) itineraries fully booked by February 20. Due to growing demand, the cruise line extended season 2018 by 1 month (starting in April instead of May). Iceland ProCruises also have plans to time-charter a second vessel, to be operated on a reverse to Ocean Dimond cruise route around Iceland (themed "Iceland Circumnavigation").

In July 2018, together with Ocean Diamond, Iceland ProCruises also chartered MS Ocean Endeavour .

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in 2021 the company chartered Ocean Diamond for the summer (July through September 2021).

For 2022, along with Ocean Diamond, Iceland ProCruises also chartered MS Seaventure (fka MS Bremen) for voyages to Greenland.

In 2021, Quark Expeditions has planned two "Antarctic eclipse voyages" during which our Moon will completely block the Sun to produce the solar corona phenomenon. The Earth's total solar eclipses happen approx every 400 years.

The Antarctic solar eclipse occurred on December 4, 2021, in the Weddell Sea. Quark's "Antarctic Solar Eclipse 2021" voyages were offered on 2 ships - World Explorer (17-day itinerary, November 26 - December 12) and Ocean Diamond (20-day itinerary, November 25 - December 14). Prices start from USD 17,000 pp.

Both cruises featured as special guests Fred Espenak (USA astrophysicist), Babak Amin Tafreshi (National Geographic photographer) and David Baron (author of the book "American Eclipse" themed on the solar eclipse that occurred on July 29, 1878).
