Mohamed Al-Fayed seen on luxury yacht on 20th anniversary of Diana and Dodi’s deaths

MOHAMED Al-Fayed has emerged on the same luxury yacht that his son Dodi and Diana once holidayed on with him before they were killed.

MOHAMED Al-Fayed has been spotted sailing on the same luxury yacht that his son Dodi and Diana once holidayed on with him.

Al-Fayed, 88, was seen looking relaxed on his luxury yacht known as Sakara while in St Tropez on the 20th anniversary of the death of Dodi and Diana.

Photos of the former Harrods owner show him looking pensive on the 112ft-long boat that he invited the late Princess Diana on with her children.

She holidayed with Mohamed, his son and former lover Dodi, and her sons William and Harry in July 1997, in St Tropez 20 years ago.

Al-Fayed will privately mark the anniversary of Dodi and Diana’s death after a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Al-Fayed has said he still mourns the death of his son after they died and claims they were killed because they planned to marry.

He claims to spend 300 days a year sitting beside his son’s body at a mausoleum in the grounds of his mansion Barrow Green Court, near Oxted in Surrey, The Sun reports.

He also has left Dodi’s Park Lane flat, where he took Diana during the summer of 1997 before the pair died in a car crash, untouched as a shrine to his son.

Two decades on, the flat is untouched, preserved like a time capsule.

Another old family friend told The Sun: “He often spends hours on end sitting with Dodi. After 20 years he still misses him terribly.

“And when he is in London he will take time out to visit Dodi’s apartment. Not one thing inside has changed since Dodi died. He will not allow anyone to move anything.

“The apartment is cleaned but it is still exactly the same as when Dodi and Diana used to spend time there.

“They used to sit on the floor having takeaway meals. She and Dodi were mad on films.

“He had a wall filled with VHS tapes. Any moment they had together, they went there. They’d watch TV and hang out like teenagers.”

Al-Fayed, doting father of Diana’s boyfriend Dodi, is still convinced the pair were just hours from announcing wedding plans — and that they were killed by security services, on the orders of Prince Philip, to prevent the Princess marrying a Muslim.

His outrageous claim made the then Harrods owner a pariah in many circles. In 2000 the store was stripped of its four royal warrants — the right to declare that a company supplies goods by appointment to the Royal Family.

The tycoon then funded a multimillion-dollar documentary which erroneously alleged that the Duke of Edinburgh had a Nazi background.

In the film — never aired for legal reasons — he set fire to the royal warrant emblems which had hung outside the department store.

A close friend told The Sun: “Mohamed believes they were in love and were going to announce their engagement in London the day after the tragedy. He will never get over the death of his son, or that of the Princess — because of the love he had for both.”

The complex life of Diana — a shy, teenage aristocrat who suddenly became a global icon — and her tragic death still captivates millions across the globe.

Diana wed Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, in 1981, but their marriage collapsed under the strains of public duty and their incompatibility.

She was cast out of the royal family in the 1996 divorce she had inadvertently made inevitable with an explosive tell-all television interview.

However, the monarchy’s shining star was undimmed, her reputation sealed as a fashion icon, charity campaigner, humanitarian and a self-styled “queen of hearts”.

And just after midnight in Paris on Thursday, a few braved the rain to be at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel where, precisely two decades earlier, her car smashed into a pillar, taking the life of the most famous woman in the world.

One man lit several candles around the Flame of Liberty monument, which stands above the underpass and has become a shrine to the princess.

Diana was “revolutionary”, said Sian Croston, a 17-year-old student from London. “She changed the royal family forever.

“She will always be the people’s princess,” she said, using the epithet coined by prime minister Tony Blair in the hours after her death.

Diana was killed along with Dodi, her wealthy Egyptian film producer boyfriend of two months, and his drink-impaired, speeding driver Henri Paul, who was trying to evade paparazzi photographers.

Twenty years on, a few dozen bouquets of flowers and pictures of the princess have been laid at the Flame of Liberty by sympathetic visitors.

“I was a child when she died but I studied her biography,” said German journalist Marie Hermann, 25, from Frankfurt.

“l loved Diana and her commitment to charities,” she told AFP. Linda Bigelbach, 61, from Saint Paul in Minnesota, said: “I remember her wedding day and I remember the day she died.”

King Charles is “losing patience” with his disgraced brother and has given him two very clear options going forward.

A huge clue about the Princess of Wales has emerged as she continues to battle cancer – but the news might not be as happy as it seems.

Meghan Markle has appeared at Oprah Winfrey’s book club session on the eve of the Queen’s death anniversary, where she made a questionable comment.

Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed's 'Last Minute' Wrong Decisions Killed Them Both

facebook

For the world, Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were killed in a tragic car crash. However, a journalist told an outlet last year (in 2023) that sadly a series of Al Fayed's decisions on the night led to their untimely death. Although brief, Diana's romance with the Egyptian billionaire and film producer was a source of media fascination before she died on August 10, 1997.

Image Source: Getty Images | Photo by Jacques Langevin

Journalist Andrew Neil claimed, "Of course, Dodi was, sadly, the architect of his own death and Diana's. The decision to leave The Ritz wasn't taken until the very last minute, as was the roundabout route through a tunnel to get to Dodi's apartment. By Al Fayed's own testimony to me, nobody could have been lying in wait to assassinate them since nobody knew in advance what they were going to do or how they were going to do it," per The Royal Observer.

The late couple were settled in The Ritz Hotel when Al Fayed decided to take Diana to his apartment close to the Champs-Elysées. But, Al Fayed was aware the paparazzi would follow them through. So he dialed his father, Mohamed Al Fayed, who died on August 30, 2023, for help and asked if he and Diana could use the businessman's personal security to escape the swarming photographers. And, of course, he allowed.

The next contributing decision was when Al Fayed instructed the driver Henry Paul to take a different detour, once again, to avoid the intrusive media. Little did he know it was the same route that death would be waiting for them. Out of the four people in the car, only one survived- their bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones. However, to date, the sole survivor has no memory of the crash.

An investigation probe launched in the mid-2000s concluded in 2008, citing "gross negligence" of the chauffeur and the paparazzi pursuing them . However, despite an apparent accident, Al Fayed's father, Mohamed, blamed a royal conspiracy and alleged it wasn't a natural death but a well-planned murder. The Harrod's owner told the inquest, "Diana told me on the telephone that she was pregnant. I was the only person that they told," per The Guardian.

RIP Mohamed Al-Fayed, 94. An extraordinary tour de force of a man who never got over the death of his beloved son Dodi in the crash that also killed Diana. Mohamed wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and he was a flawed, complex character, but I liked him. pic.twitter.com/gMHSunkmzu — Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) September 1, 2023

But  PR executive Chester Stern told a publication, "He [Mohamed] backed off [Diana's pregnancy news] being a direct conspiracy led by Prince Philip in more recent years. This suggests he was quietly beginning to accept it was an accident."

Shortly after Diana's relationship with Hasnat ended, she began dating Al Fayed in the summer of 1997. Similar to Diana, the Egyptian was divorced. They were first photographed kissing on the Fayed family yacht and less than a week before their death, Sunday Mirror wrote, "You only have to look at the sensual body language to know that they have found physical and spiritual fulfillment in each other," per PEOPLE .

Although they seemed smitten with each other, royal historian Sally Bedell Smith told Vanity Fair , "Mohamed Al Fayed engineered the romance with Dodi. And Dodi basically did whatever his father told him to do. He was really the puppet master behind Dodi and Diana’s very brief, barely more than a month, romance."

At the start of The Crown 's sixth season, Prince William and Prince Harry join their mother Princess Diana, for a vacation aboard the yacht of Mohamed Al Fayed . Fans have been anticipating what it means for the show's final season , as Diana's trip aboard the yacht would go on to become a major moment for the princess and her relationship with Dodi Al Fayed —the boyfriend with whom she famously died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Just a month before their passing, Diana and Dodi—joined for part of the trip by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry—traveled the South of France aboard a superyacht. Then named the Jonikal (it has subsequently been called the Sokar , and the Bash ), the yacht was owned by Dodi's father, former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed , when Diana traveled on it. Following the 1997 car crash that led to the couple's deaths, Mohamed attempted to sell the yacht on a number of occasions before ultimately parting with it in 2014.

In 2022, it was announced that the 208-foot yacht, which saw the beloved royal's last vacation, would be going up for sale. According to Boat International , the vessel sold in June of 2023 following a €9 million refit.

The ship, which was first launched in 1990, reportedly has nine staterooms to hold up to 12 guests with amenities including a jacuzzi, swim platform, sun deck, formal dining room, a bar, and office space. Though the ultimate sale price for the vessel has not been revealed, the asking price was reportedly €15,500,000.

Rapallo, Al-Fayed's yacht Sakara half sunk

Rapallo stormy boat from the Sakara era

The storm that destroyed almost 200 boats in Rapallo also semi-sunk Sakara, the super yacht of the Al Fayed family.

Profile photo of Lisa Pendezza

Among the half-sunken boats a Rapallo , due to the violence storm that hit Liguria, there is also the Sakara , the family super yacht Al Fayed . The webcam of the Ligurian municipality that frames the seafront shows the three masts of the ship, clearly recognizable and partially sunken. The Egyptian entrepreneur Mohamed Al-Fayed he usually uses the boat during his holidays between Italy and the French Riviera, together with his family. This is a vintage boat. She was built in 1913 on the east coast of the United States. The Lawley&Son shipyard, where it was assembled, was active from 1866 to 1945, between Scituate and Boston.

The yacht Sakara

The Sakara is a long super yacht 34 meters . Its structure was designed by John Beavor Webb , an architect of Irish origin who died in 1927. The hull is made of steel, a resistant material which, according to experts, leaves open the hope that the vessel can be recovered, at least partially. The superstructure, however, was made of wood. In 2008 all the masts were replaced with new carbon ones. Before being put to sea as Sakara, the ship had other names: Kirin, Magdalene, Primavera, Kyra and Dodi.

Bad weather, storm in Rapallo

Nearly 200 boats were destroyed by the violence storm which fell on Rapallo . Among these, also superyachts, large motorboats and sailing boats. Marina Scarpino, director of the Carlo Riva port, said: “10 meter high waves hit the cliff for hours and their force broke the dam for 300 metres. After the crash of 2000, for another storm , we had rebuilt the dam 1,30 meters taller, bringing it to 6,5 metres. It wasn't enough with a exceptional event ".

To your average man on the street, billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed's stay on a luxury boat in St Tropez is the height of extravagance.

But as he sails on a vintage vessel this weekend through the Mediterranean, the former Harrods owner's choice of boat is a far cry from those of his business peers and the super yacht he once loaned to Diana, Princess of Wales, and his son Dodi.

The 86-year-old - who is reportedly worth $2billion (£1.3billion) - was photographed looking out to sea and enjoying an ice-cream on the boat while it was moored in the French Riviera.

But it is nothing compared to Al Fayed's former yacht Sokar, also known as Jonikal, which he sold last year after it had been on the market for years.

Designed by naval architect Vincenzo Ruggiero in the 1980s and built in Italy, it measures 208ft - making it one of the largest yachts in the world.

The Al Fayeds would usually moor the boat in Monaco and it was used extensively by Diana and Dodi in the weeks before they were killed in a car crash in Paris.

Al Fayed had reportedly tried to sell the boat for $40million, but only received $13million from an unknown buyer in 2014.

He mourns alone al-fayed pictured on his yacht as he prepares to mark 20 years of son’s death.

sakara yacht al fayed

Mohamed Al-Fayed has been pictured on his luxury yacht in St Tropez as he prepares to mark the 20th anniversary of his son’s death.

The 88-year-old looked deep in thought as he relaxed on the deck of Sakara, his 112ft-long boat.

It comes as the former Harrods owner looks set to mark 20 years since Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana were killed in a car accident in Paris.

Al-Fayed has said he still mourns the death of his son twenty years after they died and claims they were killed because they planned to marry.

He claims to spend 300 days a year sitting beside his son’s body, which has been interred at a mausoleum in the grounds of his mansion near Oxted in Surrey.

He also has left Dodi’s Park Lane flat, where he took Diana during the summer of 1997 before the pair died in a car crash, untouched as a shrine to his son.

The billionaire believes they were killed by security services on the order of Prince Philip to prevent her from marrying a Muslim, even though he has no evidence.

One month after the claims were made by Mr Fayed in 2000, Harrods was stripped of its 44-year-old royal warrant, which was granted by the Duke of Edinburgh.

A spokesperson at Buckingham Palace said at the time it was due to a ‘significant decline in the trading relationship’ and refused to comment on the matter further.

A close friend told The Sun: ‘Mohamed believes they were in love and were going to announce their engagement in London the day after the tragedy. He will never get over the death of his son, or that of the Princess — because of the love he had for both.’

Another source told the paper: ‘Mohamed remains confident that information will emerge confirming his belief that Dodi and Diana were deliberately killed by the security services.

‘He always says, “My son was slaughtered”, and he believes that was because the Establishment would not allow a Muslim to be married to the woman who would be the mother of the future king.’

Despite his claims of a murder plot, an inquest held into the deaths of Dodi and Diana ruled the pair died because of the ‘grossly negligent’ driving of Henri Paul and the paparazzi in pursuit of their car.

Jurors blamed the ‘unlawful killing’ on driver Henri Paul and the group of paparazzi photographers who were following his Mercedes.

Like the earlier French and British police investigations, the panel concluded Mr Paul had been drinking and was speeding when the car hit a pillar in the Alma underpass in Paris in August 1997.

They also singled out the paparazzi’s speed and the way they were driving as contributory factors, but concluded the couple could have survived the accident had they been wearing seatbelts.

A Buckingham Palace source said: ‘The inquest verdict speaks for itself.’
