Q&A with Gaspard Milazzo – G-Yachts

How long have you been at your current organization?

I have been in the yachting industry since I was born, as my parents were pioneers in boat sales and charters in the early 70’s in the French Riviera. I created my company, G-Yachts (originally called Gaspard Yachts), in 1999.

What are your responsibilities within your organization?

I am the CEO of G-Yachts, so I supervise all operations within the company, but I also carry on working as a yacht broker as this is what I really enjoy.

Describe a typical day or week in your role.

I spend a lot of my time between Monaco and Cannes, as we have an office in both places. Regardless of where I am, like most of us, the first thing I do when I open my eyes is read my emails. Then I spend a lot of time at the office among my team talking about sales, charters and management, as I really believe that good communication is a key to success. I also travel quite a bit to meet clients and attend many events all over the world, which I really enjoy. My favorite part of the day is when I can come home to my family and 3 wonderful daughters.

What do you love most about your job?

Receiving a signed Bill of Sale : ). I love the excitement and feeling of achievement when I close a deal for a client. I think all brokers get the same excitement in these moments, which have required a lot of work to make them happen. Also, discovering new and creative designs, always-smarter technologies and experiencing impressive innovation on new and unique yachts is another thing that I love about working in this amazing industry.

What is the relationship between Jetcraft and G-Yachts?

First I was a friend of Jahid (Jetcraft Chairman) and his family. We quickly realized that G-Yachts and Jetcraft had many similarities – both are specialists in their field, and each have a global footprint where they work with a similar client base. We have now become long time industry friends and attend together many events of both industries where our teams can work together.

Who or what has been your greatest professional influence?

As I mentioned, my parents used to sell and charter smaller boats and I started working with them when I was 16. My father was tough and demanding with me but he taught me everything that I needed to know. He was a self-made-man coming from a family of fishermen and he showed me every day that success was only a matter of will and hard work. Following his footsteps I created my own company called Gaspard Yachts at the age of 23 and was referenced by the famous Boat International magazine as the youngest independent yacht broker at the time.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Honest. Love. Business.

What one item would you never travel without on a long haul flight?

My iPhone and the latest Boat International issue.

I cannot tell you as it will not be a hidden talent anymore : )

I otherwise I like riding horses and spending some quality time with family and friends.

Ares Yachts announces 51m superyacht project in collaboration with Bannenberg & Rowell

Turkish yard Ares Yachts has revealed the first details of an upcoming superyacht project known as Spitfire. Measuring 50.6 metres, Spitfire is based on the same fast displacement hull dynamics of the shipyard's offshore patrol vessel series, the Ares 150 Bold. 

Bannenberg & Rowell and Lateral Naval Architects have been confirmed as collaborators on the design, with construction scheduled to begin by 2025.

"This platform is constructed based on three fundamental principles: speed, lightweight construction, and iconic design proportions," said shipyard chairman Kerim Kalafatoğlu. "Combining a hull with offshore pedigree and the specifications of a superyacht platform opens up thrilling possibilities from both design and technical standpoints."

Leisure highlights include the vast beach club area, equipped with fold-down wings, a transformer platform and a transom capable of housing loose furniture and watertoys. The indoor space can be configured as a lounge and cinema space or as a fully-equipped gym and is designed with four large skylights to maximise natural light.

Accommodation is across five cabins, including a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck with 270-degree views and a private forward cockpit, complete with a Jacuzzi and an outdoor movie theatre.

Spitfire's design was guided by a desire for "flexible and informal living" according to the shipyard, with social spaces easily joined and separated at will using sliding glass walls and doors. An example is the main deck, whose dining room and lounge can be converted into a large indoor-outdoor area and the upper deck, where doors and a sunroof allow the indoor sofas to become part of the exterior bar, grill and sunloungers.

In an exclusive interview, Dickie Bannenberg told BOAT : "We've given her a very different layout without labouring the point of "Spitfire" and the heritage behind it. There are some nods to that. All the interior spaces are rechristened to break that link of the boring main saloon, owner's saloon, all those things. They've been ditched in favour of scramble spaces and bosses' quarters. It sets the story for that sort of boat and how she will be perceived."

Hybrid diesel-electric propulsion means the yacht can achieve a range of flexible options under power. This includes an hour's worth of propulsion on electric power alone, with an optional extra battery package pushing silent operations out to 11 hours, even in Mediterranean conditions.

Spitfire will be able to reach a maximum speed of 22 knots and a range of 2,200 nautical miles which can be upgraded to 3,500 nautical miles with extra tankage.

Boat Test: 2024 Hurricane SunDeck 2600 OB

The Hurricane SunDeck 2600 OB features a symmetrical layout with twin reversible-­back stern lounges. Flipped forward, the backrests allow those facing aft to lounge and watch swimmers or enjoy the sunset. Flip them aft, and the more-upright backrest position proves ideal for those who want to face forward.

Interior and Accessories

Up front, the bowrider seats offer the perfect amount of recline. We liked the playpen option that fills the bow with cushions.

Because there’s a sterndrive version of this boat, the outboard iteration nets a massive 2-foot-deep compartment from the empty engine space. In addition to underseat storage, a roomy head compartment with a freshwater sink is also ideal for storing large items, if the toilet won’t be used.

We tested the SD 2600 in Havasu City, Arizona, under a blazing sun. Yet, we kept cool, thanks to the optional wakeboard tower ($19,028) with its expansive, black mesh-fabric top. The top is power-actuated, rated to 55 mph, and remains level when lowered to limbo under low bridges.

The helm on our test SD 2600 featured dual ­Simrad NSX 3007 GPS displays ($3,473), along with the controller for the standard Fusion six-speaker stereo system, which can be upgraded to a dual-amp system with two additional stern speakers and remote as well as a subwoofer ($556). A premium JL Audio system is also available. The helm seats have standard electric cup-holder coolers. Other notable standards? A stern shower and wireless phone charging stations.

Our test boat was powered with a Honda 350 hp outboard . The smooth-running new V-8 from Honda displayed its engine data through the ­Simrad display while we recorded its speeds.

The Honda 350 outboard proved smooth in cornering and held its power and bite in turns. 

Deck boats usually can’t boast of seakeeping ability, but the SunDeck 2600 OB sports a 19-degree deep-V hull, which helps it slice through the chop. At cruise speeds, the robust hull rides slightly bow-up at 3 to 4 degrees of running angle, and although Lake Havasu was pondlike on test day, its design inspires confidence for big-water cruising.

• Drive/Props: Solas 16″ x 18″ 3-blade stainless steel
• Gear Ratio: 1.79:1 Fuel Load: 54 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 750 lb.

High Points

• The large head compartment with a freshwater sink is a huge plus for ­families with kids. 
• The SD 2600 now has a windlass option ($4,494). 
• The base boat is well-equipped with a six-speaker Fusion stereo and a Bimini top. Eight hull-color options are available ($695).
• The Oasis Cognac vinyl-seat option can get hot.
• The rear-facing stern seats can’t be used when cruising.
• The swim platform is small compared with the one on the sterndrive version.

Toughest Competitor

The slightly longer Sea Ray SDX 250 is the smallest in its deck-boat line. It also has reversible stern seating, a slightly larger swim platform, and a heavier, deeper-V hull with 21 degrees of deadrise. Its maximum available Mercury-only power is a 300 hp V-8 Verado, which pushes its price to $138,070.
