RIGGING SERVICES

Almost all mast failures are caused by problems in the standing or running rigging, many of which could have been easily resolved if caught early. Regular inspections and services, either before major events for racing yachts or annually for cruising boats can save money, time and potentially lives, as well as increase performance, and enjoyment and improve the chances of a successful voyage.

Rigit_Inspection_Riggning.jpg

RIGGING INSPECTIONS

360° APPROACH

Rigit rig inspection service is a 360° comprehensive check of the mast and all its component parts.

Masts bend and flex as a normal part of sailing, but over time this causes wear and tear. The marine environment is particularly unforgiving and worn protective coatings can quickly escalate into much larger problems.

Our experienced team know exactly what warning signs to look for and regular inspections can mean the difference between a quick fix and a broken mast.

RIG SURVEYS

PRE-PURCHASE

Pre-purchase surveys are a valuable tool when looking into purchasing a new boat.  The findings could save you from unwanted bills later on, put you in a better bargaining position or even show you how you could improve the yacht's performance after purchasing it.

Many insurance companies require surveys to be regularly completed.

Rigit can complete a survey to meet the insurance company’s requirements .

RIG TUNNING

PERFORMANCE

All masts bend under load as the standing rigging stretches. At its most basic, rig tuning is making sure the mast bends only in the places and directions it is designed to move, without exceeding it’s designed limitations or falling over.

Once those basic requirements have been met, rig tuning becomes the art of controlling the exact amount of flex to balance power, performance through waves and upwind speed, with consideration to the design and purpose of the hull, the cut of the sails and the requirements of the crew.

Every boat, whether cruising or racing, can benefit from a rig tune by one of Rigit experienced professionals.

NEW MAST COMMISSIONING

EXPERIENCE & PARTNERS

Measuring and specifying a replacement or upgraded mast for a boat is a complex process. The original mast must be exactly measured and the replacement specified. A naval architect may need to be involved in the design or certification of any changes.

Rigit has links with a variety of experienced designers and builders of masts across the world and can liaise with the most suitable supplier to meet the requirements of a boat and ow ner.

RUNNING RIGGING REPLACEMENT

EXTENSIVE RANGE

Gone are the good old days when manila & hemp were the staples of cordage. Wire running rigging has also been and gone, much to the joy of bow teams everywhere. The choice of rope now available can be bewildering. At Rigit our professional riggers can inspect your original running rigging, supply and install appropriate replacements as necessary from our extensive range.

Different ropes; i.e. Polyester, Dyneema, PBO, require different splicing techniques and we have the resources and experience to make the correct type of splice for the reliable joining or termination for all types of mod ern rope.

STANDING RIGGING REPLACEMENT

EXTENSIVE CAPABILITIES

Whether you’re replacing your standing rigging as an insurance requirement, after an incident or as a precaution before a long voyage, Rigit has one of the best best equipped workshops able to handle swaging and load testing of even largest rigs.

Our expertise and products range from cost-effective and well-proven WIRE RIGGING through ROD SYSTEMS that benefit from lower weight aloft and decreased windage, offering better overall performance for yachts but at an increased cost. FIBRE RIGGING, specifically PBO and Kevlar-based systems, offers massive weight savings over the other types and can work exceptionally well, but understanding the material by your Rigger is essential. At Rigit, we have a great deal of experience in all these different types and can advise you on the best type for your boat.

PARTS SERVICING

AUTHORISED SERVICE CENTRE

Regular service of parts reduces wear and tear and keeps things working at their best; whether it’s parts that should move, or parts that shouldn’t.

Regular parts servicing is an important part of preventative maintenance that allows for sacrificial wear pieces to be replaced, waterproofing and protective coatings to be renewed and moving parts to be kept well lubricated.

We are Authorised service partner for many brands.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY

Whether you have a specific upgrade in mind or you have something you’d like to improve but you’re not sure how to do it, Rigit has the connections and experience to help.

We have connections with a number of industry leading suppliers of both cruising and racing technology and we pride ourselves on remaining up to date with the latest improvements and developments.

Our staff are all passionate sailors and are more than happy to advise on anything you might want to achieve.

The sails are the engine of all yachts and as such should receive the attention that they deserve. We can provide five main services to boat owners; Sail Inspection, Cleaning, Repair, UV Proofing and the supply and fitting of new Sails.

MASTS & SPARS

Over the years we have serviced and supplied hundreds of masts and spars as a replacement or new commissions for both small and large sailboats. We are supported by almost every world manufacturer to ensure your yacht is fitted with the most optimal mast and spar combination. Each is built to the specific requirement of the boat. We provide full service including measurements, supply, transport and installation.

SPARCRAFT_LOGO.png

HEADSAIL REEFING & FURLING SYSTEMS

Originally there was only one way to reduce the sail area of a headsail to suit the changing weather conditions, a different sail was used. This meant that most yachts carried at least four headsails; Genoa, Nos. 1 to 3 Jibs and sometimes a Storm jib. And for most racing boats this is still essentially what happens. However for club racers and the cruising sailor things have changed dramatically. Improvements in both furling systems and the ability of sailmakers to use modern cloths and to have a better understanding of how to cut a genoa that will keep its shape when reefed mean that often only one headsail is needed. Let the team at RigIt guide you into making the best choice according to your needs and budget.

Rigit_Furling_Gear_2.jpg

MAINSAIL REEFING & FURLING

There are two methods of reefing or furling a mainsail; In-mast or In-boom. IN-BOOM Furling Systems are a fairly new concept but are becoming increasingly popular and outperform   In-mast systems where once the mast is in place and the rigging is fixed it is not possible to alter the bend of the mast. Doing so would negate the sailor’s ability to reef or furl the mainsail into the mast.  At RigIt we have the experience necessary to discuss the various options that are available to allow you to make the right choice for your boat.

HI_LOW_REEFER.png

HO LOW REEFER

FLYING SAILS REEFING AND FURLING

Over the past decade there has been a trend in sail plans to increase the size of mainsails and to have non-overlapping jibs. In light weather this has meant that yachts tend to be under powered forward of the mast. This has been counterbalanced by the creation of a new breed of sail, the flying sail; Code Zero, Solents, etc.

Amazing service from Rigit UK Pavel and his crew. The rigging was surveyed, reported on and an estimate was given on the same day. We cannot thank Rigit UK and Pavel enough for their speedy work, they took on the task and completed the job within days. I would strongly recommend Pavel and his crew for their excellent work carried out on our Najad Aphrodite 36. The new rigging has been properly tuned, tested at sea and looks fantastic!
Rigit Have provided a comprehensive Rig refit on our dilapidated Moody 31, installing new Furling gear, all standing rigging, all running rigging and all new mast electrics. Pav and the team have done a fantastic job in all areas with the finish throughout very high, in particular the rope work is excellentThe work took slightly longer than originally quoted, primarily due to the need to source parts for old / discontinued spars. Pav was very helpful throughout the process and guided me through various options as we went through, I would trust his expertise in any area of my boat now.
Exceptional service from Rigit UK. I needed help with the rig on my Rustler 36. Pav and his team booked me in at short notice in the busiest time of year. Riggers, Ned and Dom arrived on time to the minute, no waiting around on the dock. They expertly solved the problem at the top of the mast on a windy day. A wholly professional set up at reasonable cost. I will not hesitate to use Rigit again.

'I feel my life has been saved' after yacht rescue

A yachtsman who was "scared for [his] life" has praised the bravery of police officers after they came to his aid in heavy seas off Clacton in Essex.

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday when a storm unexpectedly hit.

His yacht, the Samphire, took on water, its sail rope tore and Mr Harris radioed a PAN-PAN distress message to alert nearby boats and emergency services of an urgent problem.

The Essex Police Marine Unit said they located the 40ft-yacht near Gunfleet Sands off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

Sgt Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott McCabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols when they picked up the distress call.

“When Alex leapt on to the boat, touched my arm and said ‘You’re safe now’, it was such a comfort. I had been scared for my life," Mr Harris said.

“The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.”

He said Sunday’s storm had not been forecast and he would not have set sail from the Isle of Sheppey earlier that day if it had been.

They had sailed between six and seven hours in good conditions but, when they turned into the Crouch, the jib sheet broke, the ropes tangled and water poured in.

“I became exhausted very quickly and sent a PAN-PAN. I didn’t want to call for assistance because the airwaves were busy, but I had no choice," Mr Harris added.

"The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue.

"I wasn’t expecting them at all...I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved."

Sgt Southgate said the large waves made the approach "particularly dangerous", but PC Perry’s skill and judgement enabled him to get to the yacht.

"Once we’d checked everything over, I was able to take control of the yacht and steer it to the safety of Brightlingsea Harbour...SC McCabe kept us in touch with Dover and our own control centre, which was vital."

Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, police officers located the 40ft-yacht near Gunfleet Sands off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton

Dramatic footage shows couple rescued during storm on 40ft yacht

This is the moment police saved a terrified couple after an unexpected storm hit their 40ft yacht off the Essex coast.

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing in their yacht, the Samphire, when a storm took them by surprise.

Mr Harris and his partner had been sailing back to the River Crouch in Essex from Kent’s Isle of Sheppey last Sunday when an unforecasted storm damaged their yacht, which began taking on water.

After the yacht became damaged Mr Harris sent out a distress call requesting emergency assistance.

Essex Police’s Marine Unit was scrambled and found the couple near the Gunfleet Sands off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

Officers rescued the couple and brought both them and their yacht back to shore.

A marine police unit is seen boating through waves

Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force’s rib, Sentinel, when they picked up the distress call and rushed out to the Samphire.

Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the yacht and rescued the distressed couple.

Mr Harris heaped praise on Essex Police’s maritime unit for saving their lives and admitted he wouldn’t have sailed had he known they would have hit a storm.

‘When Alex leapt onto the boat, touched my arm and said, ‘You’re safe now’, it was such a comfort,’ Mr Harris said. ‘I had been scared for my life. The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.

‘We sailed for six to seven hours in good conditions but then the water started whipping up and, when we turned into the Crouch, the wind caught the tender (dinghy) on the front of Samphire, the jib sheet broke, the ropes got tangled and water started pouring through the hatch.

‘I became exhausted very quickly and sent a PAN-PAN. I didn’t want to call for assistance because the airwaves were busy but I had no choice.

‘The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue – I wasn’t expecting them at all. I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved.’

Caroline smiles as an officer boards the yacht to get them onshore

Sgt Southgate added that the storm saw waves crashing over the Samphire, making their approach dangerous as it was a very windy day.

He added: ‘PC Perry’s skill and judgement at the helm enabled him to get Sentinel safely alongside. He timed everything perfectly with the wave movement and the rising and falling of the yacht to allow me to safely cross over and board the yacht.

‘Having done this, I was able to check the crew and ascertain that the skipper was suffering from severe sea sickness and was in a state of shock.

‘Once we’d checked everything over, I was able to take control of the yacht and steer it to the safety of Brightlingsea Harbour.

‘It’s great to know everyone’s got each other’s back at sea.’

Due to the stormy conditions and the Samphire’s damaged sail, the journey to shore took more than two hours on rough seas instead of the 45 minutes the trip would take in normal conditions.

Sgt Southgate added: ‘Thankfully, we were out on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the area that day and were able to locate Mr Harris and his partner in time.’

Essex Police’s Marine Unit runs Operation Wave-Breaker between April and September each year to tackle anti-social behaviour and promote water safety, mounting high-visibility patrols along the Essex coastline to keep those in the water safe.

Essex Police rescue two people from stricken yacht after sudden storm

Essex Police rescue two people from stricken yacht after sudden storm

An Essex Police Marine Unit rescued two people earlier this month when their yacht got into difficulties off the coast of Clacton after a sudden storm whipped up.

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday 25 August when the storm hit.

With his yacht, the Samphire, taking on water and its sail rope torn, Mr Harris radioed a PAN-PAN message to alert nearby boats and emergency services that their vessel had an urgent problem.

Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the force rib Sentinel when they picked up the distress call.

Working with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they located the 40ft-yacht near an off-shore windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

Due to the weather conditions and the yacht’s damaged sail, the rescue journey took more than two hours in rough seas – it would usually take 45 minutes in normal conditions.

Essex Police marine unit saves storm-hit yacht in distress off coast of Clacton

  • Essex Police
  • Thursday 29 August 2024 at 4:51pm

STILL OF YACHT RESCUE ESSEX POLICE

A yachtsman rescued in heavy seas has praised a police marine unit for coming to his aid, saying: "I feel like my life has been saved."

Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson were sailing back to the River Crouch from Kent on Sunday when a storm whipped up unexpectedly off the coast of Clacton.

With his yacht, the Samphire, damaged and taking on water, Mr Harris radioed for help to alert nearby boats and emergency services.

Sgt Alex Southgate, PC John Perry and special constable Scott Mccabe were nearby when they picked up the distress call and found the 40ft yacht near the Gunfleet Sands windfarm, four miles off Clacton.

“When Alex leapt onto the boat and said ‘You’re safe now’ it was such a comfort. I had been scared for my life," said Mr Harris

“The Essex Police Marine Unit turned up out of the blue – I wasn’t expecting them at all.

“The officers should be recognised for their bravery – they don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives.

“I can’t express my gratitude and appreciation enough. I feel like my life has been saved.”

“The Essex Police Marine Unit’s top priority is to keep members of our marine communities safe on land and water and a key part of our role is search and rescue," said Sgt Southgate.

“Thankfully, we were out on Operation Wave-Breaker patrols in the area that day and were able to locate Mr Harris and his partner in time.”

Operation Wave-Breaker runs from April to September each year and tackles anti-social behaviour and promotes water safety.
