We took our two grandsons out on the 2 hour whale watching excursion - perfect amount of time for the kids. Boat was super nice, and captain shared really good information about whales, dolphins, sea lions and more. Their use of a drone was also really cool! Saw at least 4 grey whales, and 2 different species of dolphins who raced under the boat with us! Great day on the water!

Amazing! Saw a bunch of dolphins and sea lions. It was such an easy process to board. Fun and super special. If you're looking for a great adventure, definitely take this tour!

Always enjoy the afternoon trips! We use to go from Dana Point but discovered Oceanside and now only go out with Oceanside Adventures! Today we saw a pod of dolphins playing all around the boat and also saw a gray whale. I got a shot of the fluke!

Best whale watching tour I’ve every been on. The crew was great and we saw all kinds of animals from a grey whale to different types of dolphins. We even saw a sea lion eat a small shark! Great experience overall!

I've gone out with Oceanside Adventures several times over the last two years, and every single trip has been a new experience... Shane the captain is incredibly friendly and informative and his crew is amazing. It's an experience I would recommend for anyone. Bring the whole family!

My wife and I loved our trip. Good, stable, safe, clean boat. Knowledgeable captain and mates. Leaving from Oceanside harbor makes for shorter trips - closer to the whales. We followed two whales and encountered multiple pods of dolphins. We plan to return next year.

The decision to pick this tour out of Oceanside turned out to be the best ever! The price was affordable, and one of the reasons I initially chose them, but the trip turned out to be far better than I ever expected. We saw what must have been hundreds of dolphins in 3 different species and 2 grey whales! We hung out with the whales for a long time and on the way back we took a detour and spotted sea lions hanging out on a buoy! The trip went quite a bit over the 2 hours we paid for and the crew went above and beyond to give us a memorable excursion! Well worth it! You won’t be sorry.

This is the second time we took the trip and we loved it each time. The crew is fantastic and kept us informed of events and sightings and they are super knowledgeable. The boat is very well maintained and the area is beautiful. We'll be back again and will be bringing our grandson and other family members next time.

Second trip with Oceanside Adventures and loved it. Friendly staff, knowledgeable. Captain extended out trip to catch a glimpse of a passing grey whale. Fantastic! Looking forward to our next trip.

My sister and I booked the whale watching tour while vacationing near Oceanside and we really enjoyed the experience. We saw thousands of dolphins, 2 whales, and a variety of other marine animals. We had a lovely day in terms of weather, so all around it was a wonderful, relaxing and fun way to spend a couple of hours on the water.

Whale Watching Maui Where, When, How?

Maui whale watch boat cruises compared.

A favorite activity in Maui during the winter is watching the whales.   You can do your whale watching Maui adventures from shore, but you get a closer look if you go out for a couple of hours on a whale watching boat.

If you are staying in West Maui (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua), take a boat that departs from Lahaina Harbor (or from Kaanapali Beach).  If your hotel or condo is in south Maui (Wailea, Kihei), your boat departure should be from Maalaea Harbor.

About 12,000  humpback whales  come to the waters around Maui at various times between late November and early April.  But they are most numerous from January through March, with about 5000 present at any one time in the peak month of February, so those are your best whale watching Maui months.  The whales come to Hawaii to breed and give birth.  Unlike you and me, they don’t eat while they are in Hawaii.  In the summer they live around Alaska, where they eat krill (similar to shrimp).

Humpback whales come to Maui every winter, and so should we!

See below for a comparison of some of the companies offering whale watching Maui boat excursions every winter, as well as photos and a whale watching video.   Or click for more  things to do on Maui .

Whale Watch Boats – Details and differences to help you decide

Whale watch catamarans.

This is the largest and best-known whale watch company on Maui.  Most catamaran boats are two-level, double-hull, very modern, and larger than boats from other companies.  These boats can carry up to 140 passengers.  Prices here are usually better than boats that take less passengers.

Maui Custom Charters

Maui Custom Charters offers private whale watches for up to six guests aboard the S/V Artemis or S/V Nova. This experience is ideal for groups hoping to avoid crowds aboard larger tour boats. Since Artemis is a sailing catamaran and Nova is a sailing yacht, excursions aboard these vessels are void of loud engines and diesel fumes— which both humans and whales will agree is a plus. Throughout the tour, the hospitable Maui Custom Charters crew is on hand to offer an interpretation of whale behavior, prepare tasty snacks, and man the hydrophone to listen in on whale songs beneath the surface. In season, the charters depart daily out of Ma’alaea Harbor.

Maui Whale Watching Private Sailing

Not only does Trilogy offer excellent service aboard their whale watching tours , but they are industry leaders in ocean conservation— the company was even named Ecotour Operator of the Year in 2017. Trilogy operates a fleet of six stable sailing catamarans that offer panoramic whale-watching views. A marine naturalist is also onboard to share fun facts about Maui’s humpback whales and their sometimes-quirky behavior. What’s more, Trilogy’s catamarans are equipped with hydrophones— underwater microphones— to listen in on whale songs. Trilogy offers whale watches from December 15th to April 15th out of Maalaea Harbor, Lahaina Harbor, and Kaanapali Beach.

Trilogy whale watch tours

Redline Rafting

This company uses 35-foot high-speed boats that take a maximum of 24 passengers. So they are less crowded than the above boats while sitting you close to the water like on the other small boats.  This boat is more maneuverable and you get a more personal experience than you can get on a big catamaran. The boats depart from Kihei, so if you are staying in Kihei or Wailea, then this boat is more convenient to get to than the others.

Redline Rafting whale watch details, prices, or reservations

The Kai Kanani is a 65-foot luxury sailing catamaran with room for 80 guests. They’re the only boat allowed to moor in Makena, and they conveniently have beach entry from in front of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. This location is prime because they can get to Molokini Crater faster than anyone else. The Kai Kanani has tours to Molokini for snorkeling, to turtle town, sunset cocktail cruises, whale watching, and private events.  If you are staying at a hotel in Wailea, this is the most convenient boat to take.

This is a smaller company than the above two, so has fewer boats per day.  Their 64-foot catamaran is slightly larger than Trilogy’s, plus they give you food.  Maximum 49 passengers.  You can often find a discounted price by shopping from various activity sellers. They have an 8 AM whale watch that is when the ocean is often less choppy than in the afternoon.

Another small company like Gemini, but with a more luxurious boat.  Their 65-foot catamaran holds up to 49 passengers.  They offer ala cart made-to-order full-service food in an air-conditioned dining room on their dinner-time whale watch.  Some online and local discounts.  This company’s former boat was Kapalua Kai.

Maui Adventure Cruises

These are large rafts, 37 to 49 feet long.  They limit the number of passengers to between 34 and 38.  They are faster than the above larger boats, and you sit closer to the water. So if you want a more adventurous whale watching Maui experience, this may be the right choice for you.

Ultimate Whale Watch

This company uses smaller boats, 30-foot inflated rafts that (like Maui Adventure) go faster than the larger boats of the other above companies.  You sit much lower, close to the water level.  They only take 18 passengers.

Aloha Outdoors

You can rent a small boat and drive it yourself (holds up to six people).

Maui Kayak Whale Watching

Check out this whale watching experience from a few years back off the coast of Olowalu.  Unbelievable! They also offer kayak whale watching in Makena .

Maui Whale Watching Tours are a MUST during whale season (Dec 15th-May 15th).  February is the best month, but you’ll see whales during any whale watch in that period of time.

OVER 1,000 5-STAR REVIEWS!

The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. I highly recommend this excursion.

We enjoyed getting to see what came up with the traps and getting to hold a live lobster. It was a good length of a tour and I'd definitely recommend it for the kids or adults like me who are still kids at heart. The ship captain and naturalist were very friendly and great guides.

We booked a whale watching tour through this company. It was a great experience we saw several whales and porpoise and dolphins while on the tour. The crew and staff were great and they really took time to make our tour extra special. We highly recommend this company to all who want to experience an once in a lifetime experience.

During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well. The crew were accommodating, professional, a little humorous, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend if you're up for a boat ride in the Bar Harbor area.

So fun! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, the boat had plenty of room to walk around and the captain did a great job making sure we could all see the landmarks they were pointing out. I’d go again!

Interesting history of Bar Harbor area coupled with eagles, hawks, cormorants, gannets and other sea birds. Good narration by our naturalist, Ruth, who was informative and interesting. Enjoyed the lighthouses and seeing the diverse harbors and island shores.

We loved both Captain Edwin and narrator Andy. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative. We caught a variety of sea life in the traps - lobster, crabs, and a sea cucumber. We spotted dozens of seals. The boat itself was stable, clean, and well maintained. It had flaps to protect from high winds and sea spray, but you are allowed to open the flaps as you want. I am someone who can get seasick easily, but I did not feel even the bit queasy. They do post a sign at the dock on the day of your tour that states the sea sickness level, so if it indicates a high level of sea sickness, you can take Dramamine or other in advance. Kids and adults alike enjoyed this tour and it was very interactive.

The boat is roomy, both inside ans out on the decks; staff friendly and knowledgeable. The sound system is nice and clear so all guests can hear what the naturalist is saying about the wildlife. And...oh...the whales!!! It was amazing, and I hope to do it again. Well worth the price.

On this once in a lifetime experience, we chose to go with this whale 🐋 watching 👀 tour There are many companies that offer varying tours, and this is the only one I've ever experienced, so can only speak about this one; nor do I have anything to compare it to. This experience was 100% as expected (and advertised) with zero surprises. The Captain, crew, ancillary staff,safety/security personnel and tour guide were all highly trained, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, & welcoming. It was just a fantastic overall 'refreshing' vibe. The scenery was nothing short of amazing, awe-inspiring, and magical. We saw EIGHT humpback whales!!! I am a seasoned world traveler, have visited numerous bucket list places, and have done literally hundreds of excursions through Trip Advisor and similar platforms. I 100%, would do this again if the opportunity presented itself. For others? I highly, highly recommend this experience. 👌

We went on the lighthouse tour and it was wonderful! The guide did a fabulous job informing us about lighthouses, history of the area and alerting us to wildlife. Highly recommend this tour!

The captain and crew went off their route to find interesting sights and sea life for our cruise. The Naturalist on board was knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend it!

We had a great experience with the Nature Cruise, we learned a lot about the area and saw some great scenic views! I highly recommend binoculars, you can rent some on the boat, but they’re limited. We got to see seals, porpoises, and a few bald eagles, which was really cool because I had never seen one before and they were what I wanted to see most! I definitely plan on going back again for more cruises!

A MUST-DO EXPERIENCE IN HAWAII!

I booked a last minute sunset whale watching cruise with North Shore, and I had a wonderful time. The captain and his second were both very nice, offering us drinks and lots of lore about the whales and the island. Despite the rains nearby, we stayed dry the whole time, and the captain guided us directly to a pair of Humpbacks that were feeding nearby. A nice additional touch was staying out on the water for an extra half-hour to catch the entire sunset, which was gorgeous. Highly recommended!

We had a great time and saw at least 8-10 whales including a young calf. The boat was well run and the crew were great. The hydrophone to listen to the whales was awesome! Highly recommend.

We had an amazing time with Captain Mark and Skye! Our family of 10, including an infant, went out on their catamaran. They were wonderful hosts, and super accommodating. We saw tons of dolphins, several whales and a couple of turtles. They were very engaging with our young adults and taught them how to spot the animals, making a wonderful and interactive tour. I would definitely recommend this company and will go again when we get the chance.

I would give North Shore Catamarans 10 stars if I could. Amazing cruise. A young whale breached several times near our boat. Then the mother breached and the youngster breached several more times. What an amazing sight! The boat was very stable & comfortable. The crew was delightful. We highly recommend North Shore Catamarans.

Unlike some of tours available on the south side of the island this tour does not put 200 people on a boat. The small boat held about 20 people and was the perfect size. I braved the nets and got splashed a bit by a few passing waves but it was loads of fun! February is peak whale season. We saw so many whales waving their fins and tails at us I lost count. We even got to see a a few break the water as they swam, and 1 even did a spiral flip for us. It was truly an amazing experience. The crew helped point out the whales in the distance, so we wouldn’t miss any. They were friendly and professional. I highly recommend the drive up to the North Shore! It was definitely worth it!

We went out at 0930 for a whale watching tour. Crew/staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We saw a bunch of whales, got to listen to them and swim in the deep ocean. We also saw some dolphins toward the end and spent a little extra time trying to get a better look. Photographer captured some great pics of whales and our group and sold them for a reasonable cost. Would choose this company again.

My daughter and I were on the whale watching tour. It was my daughter’s 3rd With this company. We have both been on tours and what I liked about this one. The captain and crew member were very nice. We did get to see a whale breaching and blowing, turtles and a shark. The crew also let us listen to the whales and it was so clear and amazing. Also when we were going into port the crew had a guest blow 3x into a HUGE Conch shell to let everyone now we were coming in. Lots of Fun!

This is a must do! It was great to be out at sea to view the island from a different perspective. Of course the sea life and the sun set was equally as great! Good job to the crew. They are very informative and friendly.

Enjoy The Whale Watching Tour by Electric Catamaran

Our pick: eco-friendly & ethical whale watching safari in tromsø.

Get a unique perspective on the majestic humpback and killer whales with an underwater drone and microphone. As they feed in the herring-rich fjords of the Arctic.

Departing Tromsø in the morning, the electric catamaran heads out to where the whales are in time to enjoy the short hours of daylight. On the way you can take in the breathtaking views of frozen landscapes in comfortable, panoramic lounges and multi-level decks.

You’ll find a selection of food and drinks for purchase on board. They use a hybrid engine to reach the whale’s feeding grounds, and as they come near to the whales, the silent electric engine is switched on that allows them to get close without disturbing them.

If the weather allows it, an underwater drone and hydrophone is launched that captures the images and sounds of the whales as they work together to hunt in the herring-rich fjords. The duration of this trip depends on the whales’ location and can therefore range from 6-7 hours.

There’s no guarantee, but they always do their best to see the whales!

Other great wildlife and nature activities in Tromsø

There’s a lot of other things that you can get to do in Tromsø, Norway other than whale watching. Here are a few suggestions for some more great wildlife and nature-related activities you might find in the area, like traditional Norwegian dog sledding or admiring the northern lights of Tromsø :

Chase The Northern Lights in The Norwegian Wilderness

Troms ø is one of the best places in the world you can visit to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Just like whale watching, time is crucial, and it’s important that you book your stay during the right time of the year.

Meet Reindeer Up Close And Personal

If you’ve ever wanted to meet reindeer, Tromsø is also one of the best places to visit to do it: With the right guide by your side, you can get close enough to feed them and go reindeer sledding: Who hasn’t ever wanted to do that?

Troms ø Self-Driven Husky Dog Sled Daytime Adventure

There’s also this self-driven husky dog sled daytime adventure for anyone who loves both adventure and nature. Be hands-on with the dogs, be in control of your own sled, and finish it all with a slice of chocolate cake.

Best Hotels in  Tromsø

There are great hotels to stay in within the area of Tromsø – and you can find a great place to stay for the duration of your trip no matter what your budget might be when you get here.

Some of the hotels are five-star (yet a lot more affordable than you might think), and some others might not have an official star-rating, but still be a great place to stay while you connect with the area, the locals and the culture.

Just to help you out, here’s a look at some of the top 4 hotels in Tromsø :

Scandic Ishavshotel

The Ishavshotel is one of the more luxurious options on the list, perfect for an exclusive stay in one of the leading Tromsø hotels: Luxury amenities are included in your stay, and their suites are suited to one or several with the option of room service and access to a balcony for most of the suites. Rooms have very comfortable bedding – and you can expect this option to feel akin to the Marriott anywhere else.

The Raddison Blu

The Raddison Blu is a 4-star hotel that’s great for anyone visiting Tromsø whether for a few-day family vacation or for business with a whale watching stop-over. They really utilize the theme of blue (without it being over the top) and you can book either a suite or a room with truly incredible and spectacular local views. Any hotel that provides a photo opportunity right from the room is worth it.

Tromsø Camping

Not everyone wants a luxury suite when they’re on vacation: Sometimes you just want a chance to connect with nature, get back to earth and get some rest inbetween activities – and of course, a lot of people just plainly prefer camping above hotel rooms. If any of this describes you or your group, consider Tromsø camping for a back-to-earth stay with a great atmosphere and included amenities.

The Comfort Hotel

Comfort Hotel is another unstarred option that offers you the option of suites or rooms and amenities like wi-fi throughout the hotel: It’s great because it’s classier than your average motel of stop-over, and what you’ll get on the inside is well-described by the word “comfortable.” Great for groups, great for families: Great for anyone who is planning their stay on a budget.

Best Whale Watching Season in Tromsø

One of the first questions most people have about whale watching in Norway is what time of the year to go if you want to see it. Too early or too late in the year means that you are less likely to see the whales passing through – and it’s generally pretty easy to establish their cycle every year, so you just have to make sure that you’re going to the right area at the right time.

Specially for Tromsø, the ideal time to visit the area for whale watching is during November to January  every year. Tours in February and later can be booked here .

November through to the end of January make for the best times of the year to visit Tromsø for whale watching safaris: It’s just the time they naturally pass through their route, much like the great bird or butterfly migration that happens every year in some other parts of the world.

And just like bird or butterfly migrations, you can show up to see it!

If you go in February, you’re likely too late, and any further outside of this time, you might have to catch the whales during the rest of their path if you missed them in Tromsø.

Note: The whale watching season (whales and orca’s) ends at the end of January. The chance that you will encounter whales or orcas after January is very slim. For guests that want to book a tour in February or later, you can experience the wildlife of the Tromsø region by booking a wildlife tour. During this tour you will encounter a wide variety of local wildlife such as sea eagles, guillemots, and eider ducks. Encounter puffins (in season), cormorants, seals, and otters. See small pilot whales and dolphins playing in the water and look to the shoreline to spot reindeer, and take in the flora and fauna of Tromsø in all its diversity. For more information about this tour: Click Here!

Visitors to Tromsø should also know that the whale safari isn’t the only thing to see: Many people also visit the area of Tromsø to experience the food and the incredible sight of the Northern Lights, which can be seen during around September to April every year.

For seeing the Northern Lights, the best is to link up with a reputable tour company who can tell you exactly when the best time might be to go on an organized group tour of the best areas to spot Northern Lights.

It’s an occasionally unpredictable phenomenon of nature: That’s why it’s always better to seek out an expert guide if that’s what you’re coming to Tromsø to see.

How to find an ethical and eco-friendly tour?

Whale watching is an environmental activity: This means that there are responsible ways to enjoy it – and that’s the right way to do it if we all want to continue watching the whales on their trek through the area.

Whale watching also makes for a much safer, better and more environmentally responsible alternative to any other way we have to observe these creatures: Why see them captive at aquariums when you can see them in their natural habitats instead?

It’s a pretty big reason to pick whale watching as your next vacation activity!

Always remember that you have a personal responsibility to the environment (and the ocean) when visiting it: Responsible and ethical whale tour agencies are aware of this, and they are there to answer any questions that you might have about the area.

If you’re planning to go whale watching in Tromsø, one of the first things you’ll need to do is find a tour company or guide to take you through:

The tour company is in charge of a responsible, safe route – and usually owns a relevant sea vessel that can take you out on the ocean for a tour.

When it’s time to choose a guide or tour, make sure you choose an ethically responsible, reputable and eco-friendly tour.

There are many companies in Norway who offer whale watching safaris, but not all of them are on the same level – and yes, there are some companies who aren’t registered, aren’t trained and shouldn’t be out on the water at all.

How can you be sure that the whale watching safari company, tour or tour guide that you choose ends up being an ethical, eco-friendly and responsible one?

Let me show you how:

  • Whale watching tour guides and companies have to be registered and licensed to do it. This is the first thing you should look for when going out to find a company that can help you to go whale watching.
  • Ask for their registration details – and if they’re not licensed to be out on the water (or they can’t account for the registration papers of their boat), don’t let them take you out on the water.
  • Responsible, eco-friendly and ethical tour guides are there to answer questions and, well, guide your tour. Anywhere you find a tour guide that doesn’t quite feel like a tour guide (or isn’t happy to answer the questions you have, or might not seem to know as much as they should) might not be a registered tour guide – and it’s a definite red flag.
  • Look for tour guides and companies who have a good reputation: Ask around, ask locals if they know the company or the people and check out their online reviews before you make your final choice of the whale watching company you pick to take you out on the water.

If you’ve found a whale watching company for your tour, be sure to get in touch with them and ask a few of the right questions:

  • How long have they been around?
  • How often do they do this?

Ask to see their registration – and ask any other questions that you might have in order to feel comfortable.

How to prepare for a whale watching safari?

Any kind of safari requires a little bit of preparation to make sure that you enjoy your experience as much as possible: This is true for a real African safari in the Kruger park, and it’s true for any whale watching you might want to do in Tromsø, Norway.

How do you prepare for a whale watching experience?

Here are a few tips to make sure you have a great time.

  • Listen to your guide! Assuming that you picked a reputable, registered and experienced tour company to guide you through your first whale watching experience, one of the most important things you can do is to listen to your guide (and pay attention to the water).Tour guides will almost always know the environment better, and they know what to watch out for as well as what not to do: Rely on their expertise if you want to have your whale watching experience go off without a hitch.
  • Keep a healthy distance. Always keep a healthy distance between you and the whales you’re trying to watch. Going too close is risky, dangerous and rude to everyone there – including the whales! This includes touching, feeding and anything more than being allowed to take pictures of the whales from far enough away.
  • Don’t go overboard. Including a healthy distance from the whales, it’s also a good idea to keep a healthy distance away from the side of the boat at the same time. While waters are calm most of the time, be prepared for the occasional sway or bump and don’t go overboard when this happens.Yes, it’s a possible danger to fall off the boat: While it’s unlikely that you’ll be hurt by whales, you might knock your head against the side of the boat or any number of other things. Stay safe.
  • Never lose personal effects over the side. Other than going straight over the side of the boat yourself, some people have also lost (very expensive) personal effects like their wedding rings, phones, car keys and cameras over the side of the boat during a whale watching excursion.Always be careful, and keep in mind that there are some things you want to lock away (and other things you want to leave home) when heading to whale watching.
  • Don’t put phones and other items in back pockets. Back pockets make a very bad place to keep phones and other items when heading out on a boat, and there are many people who still do it. Just don’t. Putting phones and other things in your pockets increases the chances that something will fall out of them. Some things you want to leave at home and other things you might want to secure while you’re on the boat. Just choose any place that’s more secure than your back pocket.
  • Don’t try to touch or feed the whales. Other than standing too close or losing your important effects over the side, don’t try to touch or feed the whales: You’d be surprised at what people attending whale watching tours have done in the past – and don’t be the next visitor or tourist that does something stupid. Respect the whales, respect your guide and remember that you’re here for whale watching only.
  • Seasick? Try medication – or other whale watching alternatives. Seasickness is a real thing, and a lot of people who have never been on a boat might experience it for the first time going whale watching. It’s painful, unpleasant and everything is usually spinning for a while, but there are measures you can take before you get on the boat to counter seasickness. If these measures don’t do the trick for you, there are other alternatives to whale watching on a boat, including the option of doing it from a deck through the tour companies in Tromsø that offer this.

What do you need to go on a trip?

There’s an old expression that says, “You don’t show up empty-handed to a whale watching trip.” Well, actually there isn’t – but it’s still true if you’re visiting an area like Tromsø for whale watching. There are a few things you might want to think about or bring along for the trip – and as part of your ultimate guide on enjoying whale watching, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s what you might need.

  • Appropriate clothing One of the first things that you should keep in mind for your visit to Tromsø is what clothing to pack – and what you’re going to wear on your day out. A lot of tourists accidentally plan for colder weather  during moderate seasons, or the other way around. A simple check of the weather report for the time you’re going to Tromsø can save you all of this time and effort.
  • Seasickness medicine Seasickness medicine is available over-the-counter, and if you aren’t sure whether or not you need it, the answer is probably going to be that you might. You don’t have to let something like seasickness take away from your whale watching experience when you can take preventative measures for it: Just don’t forget them at home, and take them just before you intend on going. Check with your doctor if you have any type of medical condition, or if you’re taking other medications with it.
  • Cameras Always remember your camera when you’ve booked a whale watching trip, and always remember accessories like your charger: Again, you would be surprised at just how many people book a trip and forget essentials like this. Sure, you can use your smartphone to take pictures, but yes, there’s a risk of dropping it into the water.
  • Waterproof things Most of the things you plan on taking along for your whale watching trip should ideally be waterproof – including at least one good waterproof jacket. (If you’re not familiar with the water, then it might be a better idea to wear a lifejacket instead.)
  • Backup battery life If you plan on going anywhere (and not just Tromsø in Norway!) it’s a great idea to keep backup battery life with you at all times: Emergencies happen, and you want to be prepared for anything even if it might not happen. Keep a few fully-charged power banks with you – although ideally, not out on the water.
  • Sun protection Protection against the sun is important: This is true for the body and true for the eyes. To prepare properly for a trip, make sure you’re guarded against the worst UV rays with the use of a decent skin cream together with wearing sunglasses. Especially while you’re out on the water, the sun can sometimes get to be harsh.

Whale watching photography & video tips

If you’re planning on going to Tromsø for whale watching, it’s almost certain that you’re going to take photographs of the experience, too.

Everyone on holiday wants to make sure that the ones they take are good photographs: But not everyone is a professional photographer, and not everyone has more than a smartphone to do it.

Use these tips to make sure you’re still getting good snaps of your vacation.

  • Don’t get too close Yes, this has already been said, but it’s even more true when you’re holding a camera: Don’t get in too close, and you won’t lose your camera, phone or fall off the boat.
  • Remove the flash, please How would you feel if someone stopped your taxi to work just to shove a camera through the window and flash photograph of your face? Turn the flash off when taking pictures of your whale watching experience: It’s just nice.
  • Multiple-photo mode – it’s there, use it! Your phone or camera likely has multiple-photo mode. It’s a good idea to use it when taking pictures of the whales: If not, then you might very well miss a great photo opportunity just because you were waiting for the device to wake up between images.
  • Backup memory cards and/or backing up to cloud Technology allows for the luxury of being able to backup all of your images straight to the cloud: Where not, backup memory cards can be essential. Many holiday photos have been lost because they weren’t backed up somewhere else: Don’t make that mistake yourself!

Whale watching cruise: Zodiac versus boat?

February 12, 2020

AML Marsouins next to the AML Levant

Are you planning a whale watching cruise for this summer and wondering what type of embarcation to choose, board a zodiac or a boat?  Here is a list of characteristics for each option so you choose the perfect cruise.

Whale watching cruise aboard a Zodiac:

  • Aboard a Zodiac, you are very close to the water. Whales can look more impressive when you’re in the middle of their environment. An encounter with such an imposing mammal aboard a small vessel is breathtaking.  Prepare yourself for a truly memorable experience.
  • This activity is for thrill seekers. During the cruise, you will be under the impression that you are moving at a very high speed. You will probably be splashed but it is part of the fun.
  • You will enjoy an intimate experience with a few passengers, a certified naturalist captain and whales.
  • It is generally colder aboard a Zodiac. Although AML Cruises provides coverall suits for the expedition, it is strongly recommended to dress warmly for the occasion.
  • Boarding is prohibited for pregnant women, children under 5 years old and people with back issues.

Whale watching cruise aboard a boat:

  • Aboard a boat, comfort is guaranteed. There are various services offered including a restaurant, a souvenir boutique and washrooms. You can enjoy a good meal and observe the whales in their environment.
  • In case of rain, there are several places on the boat where you can stay warm and dry.
  • The boat offers plenty of spaces to observe whales as well as to stretch your legs (covered decks, glassed-in panoramic decks, observation platform). AML Cruises offers the best whale watching cruises in Canada.
  • The boat can accommodate several hundreds passengers.
  • Take advantage of the comfort aboard the boat and listen to the naturalist guide as he describes the fascinating world of whales. Enjoy the extraordinary panoramic view and discover the life of these remarkable sea giants.

Whether you choose a Zodiac for thrills or a boat for its comfort, AML Cruises promises you an unforgettable encounter with the most fascinating marine mammals in the world! Our crew will take you to the best locations to observe whales, keep your eyes wide open and enjoy the show!

What time of the year to go whale watching?

We have very good whale watching from February through November here on the central coast of California and on average we will find whales on most of the trips. Please check the "recent sighting" page for more information on what we are seeing currently. The past 2 years of trips notes are listed there if you would like to compare your dates with what we saw in 2022 and 2023. Every year is a bit different and these are wild animals that are free in the ocean so please have realistic expectations and understand that we are offering you a chance to see something special and not a guarantee that you will.

  • April through December is Humpback Whale season:  While we enjoy good sightings over this entire time period, the peak months when the most whales are here and the weather is at its best are August through October. These trips typically see whales on over 95% of the excursions. In April we will have the opportunity to see both Grey whales and Humpbacks.
  • January through March is Grey Whale season :  On these trips we enjoy excellent opportunities to see the California Grey whales as they migrate past our shores. March is the best month for seeing Grey whales with sighting on about 80% of the trips.
  • For a more detailed breakdown of what you might see please click on the individual trip description pages.

What time of the day to go?

Departure times for whale watching trips are 9:00 am and 11:30 am. The earlier trip usually has calmer sea conditions and the mid day trip has a bit more sunshine. The whales activity levels are about the same but do vary from day to day. There will be periods of calm and clear weather when we will be able to add more trips for private groups. These private trips typically go at 6:30 am or 2:00 pm. Please call me if you are interested in adding a private trip at a special time.

Six passenger maximum on a 28ft power catamaran, looks like a power boat but ride like a catamaran

Unlike most whale watching tours on larger boats with as many as 100 people on board, our tours are unique in that we only take 6 passengers at a time. This ensures that everyone can enjoy an unobstructed view of the whales  and other wildlife that we encounter with no crowding. We also have the advantage of being able to move quickly to a new location if we see something exciting going on. Catamarans with 2 hulls offer a much smoother ride through the waves which helps us get to the whales faster. Catamarans are also very stable which is a big help when taking pictures of the whales and other wildlife we encounter on these adventures. Personally, our favorite part of the smaller boat with only 6 passengers is that we will have the opportunity to talk about the animals as we observe them and we are available to answer questions about what we are seeing.

Where is Avila Beach Whale Watching located?

Our departure dock is located very close to Avila Beach, Ca. on a quaint, historic pier known as the Harford Landing at Port San Luis. This is just 15 minutes from Pismo Beach, Ca. and 20 minutes from San Luis Obispo, Ca. If you are staying near Paso Robles, Ca. we are only 45 minutes away and in the summer 20 degrees cooler!

Local Experience

Local experience matters when looking for whales.  We have been in continuous, year round operation on the waters of San Luis Bay since 2012. Captain Mark Kocina the owner has worked as a boat captain / naturalist / adventure travel guide / white water rafting guide for over 40 years in many countries around the world. He will bring all of that experience to bear on these trips. Captain Frank Orazio has been fishing these waters for 21 years and is an excellent boat captain with a good background in wildlife sighting. In our combined time at Port San Luis, we have taken over 18,000 guests out onto these waters to see the whales and other animals that frequent this area. If you are looking for a knowledgeable, friendly captain to escort your family out for a safe, educational and memorable whale watching experience please join us for a tour.

Are you guaranteed to see a whale?

The short answer is no as this is not a zoo. Please understand that we are offering you a chance to see wild animals that live freely in the real world and that is the beauty of this experience. We will always use every bit of experience we have to find them for you but no one on earth has control over mother nature.  While the whales do present themselves for us to see on the majority of our tours there will be trips that they do not.  Unfortunately our expenses are higher when we do not find whales as we search more, so we do not offer refunds or credits for future trips when we do not find whales. We appreciate your understanding as we are not in control of the weather or the animals.

PLEASE NOTE: If the ocean becomes too rough or foggy on the day of your trip to safely go out to the whales we will give you the option to either get a  full refund or go on a coastal explorer tour and you will receive a 50 percent refund.

How close will we get to the whales?

We will observe the animals from a safe and respectful distance. NOAA rules now stipulate that the safe distance for us to approach whales is 100 yards, Sea Lions and Dolphins is 50 yards.  At these distances we will be able to see the animals clearly and more importantly the animals will be safe and able to go about their day undisturbed by us.

Restroom Facilities

There is no toilet on the boat. Please use one of the public toilets in the port area before boarding. The most convenient toilet is found on the right side of the roadway as you enter the port area. It is located on the ground floor level of the Coastal gateway building

Non-Discrimination

We believe that each person deserves to be treated equally without discrimination of any kind for any reason. We do not discriminate in any manner against any person on account of marital status, religious creed, color, sexual orientation, ancestry, national origin, age, sex, medical condition (cancer / genetic characteristics) or disability, (mental or physical) including HIV and Aids.

Everyone is welcome on our tours, there is no age limit .

"I really loved the boat and the whole service from pick up to return was impeccable. Small group of people and generous on drinks, snacks and the Atlantic didn't fail to deliver whales and dolphins. These guys give their best... Michael the captain(I forgot his name) and Sisco are real care takers."

Just Brilliant!

"Fantastic trip. Highly recommended if you want to see whales and dolphins in their natural environment. The crew were brilliant, very informative and overall exceptional value."

Great adventure

"It was a really well planed trip, and the service was great! The staff was very friendly, and service minded. I would highly recommend you to go in this adventure!!"

Expectations absolutely fulfilled

"Excellent Trip, full recommendation. Whales are almost guaranteed, Tapas are fine and if they say "drinks included" they really mean it 🙂 We had a great time on the katamaran, finished by a nice stop in a small bay to go swimming and snorkeling. Michael and Andres were really polite and had a lot to tell about the whales and their habits."

"Excellent crew and captain; fast, comfortable boat, care taken over local wildlife, and we saw both dolphins (two, bottle-nosed) and whales (LOTS, pilot!) A real bonus to our short break on Costa Adeje. Definitely worth the money - highly recommended."

Loved this !

"Just back from the most amazing day! From the Initial pick up to the drop off, it was superb ! The guys couldn’t have been any nicer . We saw the best array of whales and dolphins , with the crew pointing them all us! Enjoyed a couple of glasses of cava and a swim in the sea when we anchored up! I want to do it all again tomorrow "

Outstanding service

"As you scroll through trip advisor you see quite a few companies with a solid wall of five star reviews, in the case of the Monte Cristo the reason is plain and simple. They make it their business to deliver a 1st class experience. The only reason I gave them five stars is that there wasn’t an option to give 6."

What a great day with the dolphins

"Our family went out on a trip with this amazing catamaran. The staff was great, really nice guys! We really liked the food too! Not like other boats just a sandwich. We enjoyed it a lot! One of the best trips we had on Tenerife."

Haleiwa sunset catamaran whale watching.

**Seasonal from December - April** North Shore sunsets are the best and there is no better place to watch them than from the deck of the 40ft Catamaran, the Ho'o Nanea. The sunset hours are a magical time to be out on the water. With the winds calm, the sun turns golden and paints the sky in a palette of hues and colors that seem almost unreal. There is no way you cannot be taken by it. The clean ocean air, vast sky and unbelievable sunset colors will connect you with nature and give you a feeling of relaxation and happiness that most people don't get to experience anymore. A sunset sail will help you calm your mind and let you breath again. So come join us and reset your senses!

What to Expect

And let's not forget about the Humpback Whales. Watch blowholes spout off in the distance, 50 foot long humpbacks break the surface within a few yards of the boat, giant fluke tails lift up exposing their unique white pigment patterns, and even the occassional breach right off the side of the catamaran.

North Shore Catamaran Charters was chosen as the best whale watching on Oahu because of it’s personalized attention, uncrowded boat, and fun and informative crew. During whale watching season the ocean boils with activity from the humpback whales and marine life.

The Catamaran

The Ho'o Nanea is the perfect boat for whale watching. It is just the right size to keep you close to the ocean, but big enough to be a safe and stable viewing platform. We are the only commercial sailing catamaran on the whole North Shore. You will not find a gaggle of boats competing for whales. Avid and apathetic whale watchers alike would both agree that sailing the North Shore of Oahu in search of whales is done best on the Sailing Cat.

The whales do not get frightened or disturbed by our boat because most of the time we are under sail. When we do motor, the small outboard engines are very quiet and unobtrusive. Our underwater hydrophone lets you hear the singing, clicking and moaning that goes on between the groups of humpbacks. It is a truly amazing experience!

  • The only commercial sailing catamaran on the entire North Shore
  • Chance to get up close with a breaching whale

Please Arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in process

  • Frequent Humpback Whale, Dolphin, and Turtle Sightings
  • Friendly and Knowledgable Crew
  • Informative Tour teaching about Hawaii's Humpback While Migration
  • Coast Guard Approved Life Jackets on board
  • Non-Alcoholic Beverage Refreshments
  • Bathroom Onboard
  • Bring Your Own Beer / Alcohol Permission
  • Enjoyable Sailing off the underdeveloped North Shore
  • Please meet us at our boat in the Haleiwa Boat Harbor. For GPS, we recommend that you use the "Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill" or harbor address: 66-105 Haleiwa Rd., Haleiwa, HI 96712. Our boat is located next to the 2 story grey building in the middle of the harbor.

That’s right, whale watching in Cabo San Lucas is one of the best activities you can enjoy in this Baja California Peninsula resort area!

You have a 90 to 95% chance of seeing whales on pretty well most Cabo whale watching tours.

This is thanks to Cabo’s amazing location. It’s where the Sea of Cortez – one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet – meets the Pacific Ocean.

Whale watching in Los Cabos: FAQs

Last words on the best Cabo San Lucas whale watching tours

The most common species of whales in the seas around Cabo are California gray whales and humpback whales .

They both make the 6,000-mile-long migration from Alaska down to Cabo in the cooler winter months.

In fact, around 10% of humpback whales are born in Mexico !

Breaching humpback whale in Cabo San Lucas

However, there are plenty of other whales in the temperate waters around Cabo. We said it was one of the most biodiverse places in the world, didn’t we.

On your tour, look out for blue whales (the largest mammal in the sea), sperm whales, minke whales, orcas (also known as killer whales), fin whales and pilot whales (which are like large dolphins).

As well as all the whales in Los Cabos, chances are you’ll see other marine life too, like bottlenose dolphins and sea lions.

Whale watching Cabo: Season

So you want to know: When can you see whales in Cabo?

Generally in the winter, but let’s explain a little more.

A whale watching boat tour in Cabo San Lucas

The Cabo whale watching season runs from around mid-December to mid-April, although it’s possible to see whales outside of this time frame.

The “official” Cabo San Lucas whale season is set by the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Mexico’s environment ministry) every year. Usually it starts on December 15.

The best time of the season depends on which whale you want to see.

Humpback whales in Cabo

The peak humpback season is between late December and the end of January.

Barnacles on a humpback whale in Los Cabos

January in Cabo is thus an ideal time for a post-Christmas trip if you want to see humpbacks.

However, baby humpbacks – so adorable – start appearing in the seas in February.

The humpbacks disappear around late March and early April, when they make the journey back north to Alaska.

Gray whales

Between early January and March, you’ve also got a good chance of seeing gray whales, which normally come much closer to the shore than their humpback cousins.

Best time of day to go whale watching in Cabo San Lucas

So, you now know the whale season in Cabo san Lucas. But what about the best time of day to see whales?

In the peak whale watching season, tours are usually offered three times a day – early morning, mid-day and late afternoon. Is one time better than another?

Early morning tours

The early morning is our preferred whale watching time.

We find that the sea is calmer and the boat ride is less choppy this time of day.

Plus, we like reserving our afternoons for enjoying the beach and reading a good book!

The downside is that the tours leave pretty early – about 8:00 am.

Mid-day tours

Mid-day tours can be rather warm on the boat if there’s no shade (remember to pack a sunhat).

But by this time the boat captains generally know where the whales are hanging out, which gives you a better chance of seeing them.

This is Cabo, though. You will see whales most of the time during the Los Cabos whale watching season – no matter when you go!

Late afternoon tours

Many visitors report that they see the best whale activity in the late afternoon when the creatures are more playful.

Humpback calf in Cabo San Lucas pokes its head out of the water

The breeze picks up in Cabo around mid-morning and usually lasts until late afternoon.

And apparently, whales actually like a little wind and some waves.

You might want to avoid late afternoon tours if you’re prone to seasickness though.

But larger boats are usually stable, so you shouldn’t have a problem on an afternoon tour on a larger vessel.

Bottom line: Which is the best time to see whales in Cabo?

These are all just musings, however. Whales don’t have the same Circadian rhythm (i.e. 24-hour cycle) that we have.

Sometimes they’re more active in the morning and sometimes the afternoons are better for spotting them.

So we’d recommend picking your preferred time and just going with that.

10 Best whale watching tours in Cabo San Lucas

Whale tail flukes

Whale watching tour boats leave from the Cabo San Lucas Marina and head out into Cabo San Lucas Bay.

They sometimes travel around Land’s End and into Pacific waters too in their search for whales.

Here are 10 of the best tours to see Cabo San Lucas whales:

Cabo Expeditions is among the most popular tour companies in the area.

They offer top-notch whale watching excursions on a Zodiac boat .

People on a Cabo Expeditions Zodiac watch two whales in Cabo San Lucas.

With the help of knowledgeable tour guides, your boat captain will steer you to the best hot spots for whale sightings.

The smaller Zodiac boat also means it can travel to areas that big boats can’t, giving you the chance to get up close and personal to these 40-ton giants, while still keeping a safe distance.

We’ve done this tour and can highly recommend it!

Cabo Trek also offers some of the best whale watching excursions in the area.

They have the prestigious title of being the first company in Mexico to obtain “Responsible Whale Watching Operator” certification from the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA).

Their small group whale watching tours (10 to 12 people on average) are on a small boat that can accommodate up to 18 people.

Cabo Trek offers a completely immersive experience. You can see whales above water and on their underwater camera system, and you can hear them through their hydrophones.

There’s a marine biologist on every tour to help you make sense of the whales’ behavior and learn more about these special creatures.

Visitors on a Cabo Trek boat watch a whale go back down under the water

The boats are spacious and have a roof canopy for shade – ideal if you’re on a mid-day cruise.

During the Los Cabos whale season, the tours run three times a day, taking 2½ hours.

We haven’t yet done one of Cabo Trek’s tours, but they get great reviews, so we feel confident recommending them here.

Some Los Cabos whale tours charge extra for their photos.

This whale tour includes the photos , so you can take home some fabulous whale photos, at no extra cost!

Whale watchers zooming out on a Cabo Nature tour

The boat that Cabo Nature uses is a 24-foot boat, and it’s kitted out with an underwater microphone so you can hear the whale songs. The group size is limited to 10 people.

The guides are all passionate, university-educated marine biologists.

They’ll share their knowledge of whale migration patterns, how whales are tracked via tail identification and more.

4) Inflatable speedboat tour

Humpback whale in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo Adventures is one of the biggest (and best) operators in the biz of offering Cabo San Lucas tours. We’ve done several tours with them now – all excellent.

They offer a few different types of cruises, depending on your style.

One is a whale watching adventure using an inflatable speedboat, guided by experts in marine mammals.

5) Luxury catamaran cruise

If you want something more comfortable, Cabo Adventures also offers deluxe catamaran whale watching cruises on a double-deck vessel (with bathrooms), accommodating about 25 guests.

The main deck has tiered seating up front, giving everyone a great view. Up top, there’s a small shaded deck with cushioned seats for about six people.

The French-made power cat offers smooth sailing, even in choppier waters – so it’s perfect for families or anyone who’s prone to motion sickness. It also boasts hydrophones, so you can hear the whales when they’re underwater.

When boarding, we were all welcomed with mimosas.

Mimosa on a boat while passing the Arch of Cabo San Lucas

After we set off, we were offered drinks of our choice.

Snacks followed, cleverly served in lacquered Japanese-style trays (one for each couple or small group), with compartments for guacamole and chips, toasted ham and cheese sandwiches (ours was an 8:00 am tour) and delicious chocolate truffles.

Meanwhile, our guide entertained us with all sorts of facts about whales and whale behavior.

And yes, we saw humpback whales on our tour – but mainly tails. No OMG breaching action (unlike people we’d met who were treated to an amazing whale show the day before).

No matter. With an open bar and plenty of snacks, this luxury 2½-hour tour is still a definite must-do in Cabo for one of the classiest whale watching experiences.

Whale watching in Cabo San Lucas from a luxury catamaran

The downside is that our vessel didn’t get as close to the whales as other smaller boats, which could maneuver more easily and quickly.

A popular company for all things Cabo marine-life related, PezGato offers 2-hour whale tours on a sailing catamaran .

Take in the best view of whales while sipping on an ice-cold beer (snacks and all beverages are included) and hear the whales’ songs through the hydrophones.

The large boat is comfortable and steady even in choppier weather, and all bookings include hotel transfers.

What’s better than a large Mexican breakfast? A large Mexican breakfast with views of whales, of course!

That’s just what Wild Cabo offers on this whale watching breakfast cruise .

With a twin-level power catamaran offering lots of space and two bathrooms, you’ll have a super-comfy start to the morning as you enjoy chilaquiles, beans, scrambled eggs and hot cakes.

Margarita in Cabo San Lucas

The open bar with mimosas, margaritas and cold beer (plus non-alcoholic drinks) is also sure to put a smile on your face.

The tour takes in Cabo’s Arch ( El Arco en Espanol!), Lover’s Beach and Land’s End, and then heads to some of the best whale watching spots in the area.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable marine biologist, you’ll likely see plenty of whales and learn about their behavior too.

8) Pirate-themed cruise

We bet the kids would love their breakfast on a pirate ship!

Wild Cabo offers a whale watching breakfast tour aboard a pirate boat .

How’s that for one of the coolest things to do in Cabo ?

Whale watching tours in Cabo San Lucas on pirate-themed boats

9) Educational tours

Whale Watch Cabo is perhaps the champion in their field, with very educational Zodiac tours .

They use fast boats (carrying up to 10 people) that zip right to where the whales usually hang out, with full commentary from a marine biologist. Children under 13 aren’t permitted on this tour.

However, Whale Watch Cabo also offers  tours on larger covered boats, where kids can join.

10) Big boat brunch tour

And then there’s Sunrider Tours.

Hop aboard a really large power catamaran. It can hold up to 250 passengers.

These highly-rated tours on the SunRider 100 are kid-friendly and combine whale watching with a delicious brunch buffet and an open bar.

A humpback whale breaches right by a large catamaran in Cabo San Lucas Bay.

Whale watching is highly regulated in Baja California Sur, with the safety and preservation of these mammals and their ecosystems always taking priority.

Guides must be officially licensed to lead whale watching trips.

Many are led by marine biologists and local whale experts who are familiar with all the various species and conservation efforts.

Boats can’t get closer than between 65 and 130 yards, depending on the whale species.

Sometimes, though, whales swim by close to your boat, even though your captain will try to move away.

So if a whale swims fairly close by your boat – which isn’t unusual – then you’re in luck!

How Cabo whales behave

Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching Season

Just gazing at these majestic creatures is a bucket-list check.

But if you know a little more about how they behave, your experience will be even richer. Here’s some information about their behaviors:

  • Head, tail or flipper slap:  This occurs when a whale moves a part of their body out of the water and then slaps it down on the water’s surface.
  • Spyhop:  It sounds like a James Bond movie. But this is when a whale lifts and turns its head before crashing back under the water. It’s generally done when a whale is watching out for predators.
  • Breaching:  When you see epic photos of whales, they’re usually doing a full body breach – jumping out of the water then turning and re-entering!
  • Peduncle throw:  This is a turning motion when a whale moves its tail and peduncle (where the tail fluke connects to the body) out of the water and smashes it back down. When you see a whale doing this, they’re mating.
  • Blow:  Whales blow water from their blowhole, so this is how whales breathe out. They can go for 15 minutes without breathing, although they generally breathe every 3 to 5 minutes when traveling.
  • Logging:  This is how whales sleep. They rest with their head and back exposed so they can breathe and move slowly on the surface.

Whale watching in Los Cabos: Frequently Asked Questions

A whale surfaces right by a boat in Cabo San Lucas Bay.

Where is the best place to go whale watching in Mexico?

Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places in Mexico for whale watching.

Other Mexican beach destinations like Puerto Vallarta are good too.

We’ve also gone whale watching in the Bay of Banderas in Puerto Vallarta – and we had a fabulous time viewing humpback whales there as well.

Why do whales migrate to Cabo?

Whales generally migrate from  Alaska  and along the west coast of the USA, down to Mexico, because of the water temperature.

In the winter months, they leave the frigid Arctic waters and swim south to mate, socialize and give birth in the warmer waters around Cabo.

These waters have lots of excellent nutrient-rich shallows and lagoons that make for great nurseries for baby whales.

In fact, on many whale watching tours, you’ll see whales in their natural habitat – teaching their young how to survive in the wild or just playing. It’s a humbling sight.

Spring signals the end of the Cabo San Lucas whale watching season. The whales leave the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez and head back north to spend their summers in Alaska.

Some whales, such as killer whales, travel to the Sea of Cortez because of the rich array of marine life (aka whale food) here.

How much does whale watching cost in Cabo?

Generally, whale watching tours in Cabo cost between $80 to $120 USD p.p.

If you book tours that include an open bar and a meal, they’ll be at the higher end of this spectrum. Likewise, if you opt for experiences with a marine biologist, you’ll be paying for their knowledge.

Can you swim with the whales in Cabo?

No, it’s illegal. Plus, they’re huge mammals and they’re unpredictable. They could accidentally hurt you when they move.

However, you can swim with whale sharks in La Paz on a day tour from Cabo San Lucas.

They’re not actually whales, which are warm-blooded. Whale sharks are fish, which are cold-blooded. But they’re just as big as whales – and they’re very gentle.

That wraps up our guide on the best Cabo San Lucas whale watching tours!

When planning your Cabo trip , whale watching is definitely a bucket list activity you’ll want to experience.

It’s one of the reasons to head here in winter (the best time to see whales in Cabo).

Witnessing these majestic mammals is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

We hope your whale watching tour will give you plenty of wonderful memories that you’ll be talking about for months to come!

Why take a dolphin and whale watching trip in Madeira?

Is it worth it.

Totally, it’s one of Funchal’s must-do activities! Madeira is a prime destination for observing dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. There’s a good chance you’ll come across cetaceans during your observation tour. What species can you spot around Madeira? When can I see them?

Whale and dolphin watching season.

In Madeira, you can see whales and dolphins all year round. The observation towers are open continuously. A few species of whale remain permanently close to the island, which is a veritable sanctuary for these marine animals.

However, we recommend that you focus on the period from April to September, when the greatest number of species are concentrated. In summer, dolphins congregate in shallower waters, generally closer to the coast. Overall, you’re more likely to see dolphins, as whales spend more time in the depths of the ocean. To learn more about these amazing sea creatures, visit the Whale Museum in Caniçal!

Different species visible in different seasons

Madeira attracts an impressive diversity of cetaceans, including many species of dolphin and whale. In the waters surrounding the island, bottlenose dolphins are very present, even in the depths of winter. Sperm whales and pilot whales, both members of the whale family, are fairly common in the region. As the seasons change, different species approach the archipelago:

  • Common dolphin between January and July,
  • Striped dolphin from February to April, then from July to November,
  • Atlantic spotted dolphin between March and October,
  • Rough-toothed dolphin between May and September,
  • Risso’s dolphin between May and October,
  • Fin whale between April and October and sometimes in winter,
  • Byrde’s whale between April and December,
  • Sei whale between March and October and sometimes in winter,
  • Humpback whales from March to April, then from September to November.

Best time of day

Excursions take place in the morning, afternoon and at sunset for maximum flexibility. Although there’s no better time of day to spot cetaceans, overall you’re more likely to see dolphins than whales.

Which boat and tour to choose to see dolphins in Madeira?

Whether you prefer peaceful seafaring or more dynamic escapades, you’ll find what you’re looking for among the many options available in Madeira! The number of dolphin and whale watching tours on offer is very high, making it all the more difficult to make the right choice. We have a slight preference for catamarans or sailing boats, which offer a gentler, more authentic experience. Generally speaking, you should allow between 2 and 3 hours for this activity. To help you identify the tour best suited to your needs, find out more about the advantages of the different types of boat:

Advantages of an ecological catamaran: our favorite

coast - Madeira

  • The activity lasts about 3 hours. We had plenty of time to enjoy the island’s magnificent coastal scenery.
  • The catamaran is equipped with hybrid electric motors, more respectful of aquatic fauna. It’s a technology that’s close to our hearts!
  • You can move around the boat quite freely.
  • Bar with drinks and snacks available.
  • Disabled-accessible toilets.
  • Seating inside and out.
  • Upper deck with superb views.

During our trip to Madeira, we went in search of cetaceans aboard a catamaran. It was a memorable experience, as we came across a school of dolphins! We highly recommend this option, especially if you enjoy being rocked by the waves.

See availability and book.

Speedboat advantages

dolphin fin - Madeira

  • The activity lasts about 2 hours.
  • The zodiac can cover long distances quickly.
  • In theory, you increase your chances of seeing several different groups of cetaceans.
  • The adrenalin and sensation of speed are more intense than on a catamaran.
  • The boat is low to the water, so the cetaceans can get as close to you as possible.
  • Conditions permitting, you can swim with the dolphins.
  • If you didn’t come across a dolphin or whale during your tour, you can take a 2nd visit free of charge.

Advantages of a luxury catamaran

Tips for enjoying your dolphin-watching tour in Madeira

Book at the right time.

To maximize your chances of seeing cetaceans in Madeira, book your excursion a few days after your arrival. This way, you’ll avoid any problems associated with flight delays, or even flight delays. Some days, the winds are too strong for planes to land on the island.

But don’t wait too long either! We recommend booking your dolphin-watching tour mid-stay. If bad weather conditions prevent you from going out to sea on the day, the organizer of your activity will be able to offer you an alternative time slot. Some even offer a second free tour if you didn’t see a dolphin or whale on your first outing. This is particularly true of this activity .

shoal of fish - Madeira

Respecting marine animals

During your encounter with cetaceans, respect a few essential rules to ensure the well-being of these marine animals:

  • don’t feed them,
  • do not approach closer than 100m,
  • keep noise to a minimum,
  • do not cross a group of whales,
  • do not throw your garbage into the water,
  • avoid sudden movements of the boat.

These precautions guarantee responsible and respectful observation of marine fauna.

Take warm clothing

Don’t forget to bring warm clothing with you on the boat, whatever the season. The wind in Madeira can be intense, so you’ll quickly feel the chill when you’re out at sea. We recommend you bring a life jacket to cover your arms, and a towel to dry off after swimming. During winter, slip on a waterproof jacket to protect you from potential rain.

view from catamaran - madeira

Wear sunscreen

The boat may be buffeted by winds of varying strength, so you may not feel the intensity of the sun’s rays, and you may get burned. Apply sunscreen generously before setting off, and reapply after swimming. Don’t forget your feet, which are just as exposed as the rest of your body. Complete your protection with sunglasses and a hat!

Put on your swimsuit before the tour

If you’ve opted for a swimming excursion, don’t forget to put on your bathing suit before you even get on the boat! Generally speaking, there’s little room to change directly on board. What’s more, you’ll be the first to jump into the water! You don’t want to waste a second before diving into this magnificent setting, do you?

catamaran - madeira

Anticipating seasickness

If you’re prone to seasickness, here’s some advice:

  • move to the stern of the boat,
  • stay outside the cabin to enjoy the fresh air,
  • a light meal before the boat trip,
  • look to the horizon,
  • sip water slowly,
  • prefer fast boats to catamarans.

Immortalize the moment

Take your camera or smartphone with you. To avoid dropping your equipment in the water, there are cables that connect it to your wrist or neck. Marine animals move very quickly. We recommend that you photograph them several times, then add to your photo gallery only after the tour. And don’t forget to take pictures of the coastline. Madeira is a magnificent island. Above all, make the most of the moment and don’t forget to enjoy this extraordinary experience!
