Centurion 32

  • July 9, 2009

This elegant Holman & Pye design from 1969 is now one of the more sought-after cruiser-racers of the period. Her heavy construction and excellent fi nish mean she has lasted well and her good manners, combined with sprightly windward performance, make her a rewarding fast cruiser for both experienced and novice sailors. Built by Henri Wauquiez in France, she has six berths in two cabins in a typical layout of the times – heads amidships, two berths forward, three in the saloon and a quarterberth. Galley and chart table are both acceptable, and she has a lead fin keel. She had two masthead rig options, although the smaller of them was the more popular.

LOA 9.75m (32ft), LWL 7.32m (24ft), beam 3.00m (9ft 10in), draught 1.78m (5ft 10in), Displacement 4,800kg (10,500lb). Price guard: £15,000 to £22,000.

Review of Centurion 32

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The Centurion 32 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.77 - 1.87 meter (5.81 - 6.11 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with a Volvo Penta diesel engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Centurion 32 is about 146 kg/cm, alternatively 821 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 146 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 821 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 26m 2 (279 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

The Wauquiez Centurion 32 Sailboat Specs & Key Performance Indicators

The Wauquiez Centurion 32 sailboat, a masthead sloop, was designed by British naval architect Kim Holman and built by the French boatbuilder Henri Wauquiez in Mouvaux, France.

Published Design Ratios for the Wauquiez Centurion 32 Sailboat The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (15.8): This ratio indicates that the sailboat is on the lower end of the power spectrum. With a ratio below 16, the vessel would be considered underpowered. This suggests that while the boat is likely capable of reasonable performance, it might not excel in light wind conditions and won't be as quick or competitive as boats with higher ratios in the 16-20 range or beyond.
  • Ballast/Displacement Ratio (45.9): *  A Ballast/Displacement ratio of 45.9 indicates that the boat is relatively stiff and capable of standing up well to the wind without excessive heeling. This implies good stability and the potential for steady handling in various wind conditions. However, it is worth noting that this ratio does not account for the placement of the ballast (e.g., deep versus shallow keel), which can significantly affect the boat's actual stiffness and handling characteristics.
  • Displacement/Length Ratio (310): This places the Wauqiuez Centurion 32 in the Heavy Displacement category (275-350). Such boats generally take more effort to drive to their hull speed and may not be as nimble or fast as lighter-displacement vessels. However, they often offer smoother and more comfortable rides, especially in choppy conditions, due to their inertia.
  • Comfort Ratio (26.8): ** With a Comfort Ratio of 26.8, the Centurion 32 falls into the range associated with a coastal cruiser with moderate stability. This suggests a decent level of comfort for typical sailing conditions but may not offer the smoothest ride in rough offshore conditions compared to boats with higher comfort ratios (30-40 for moderate bluewater cruisers).
  • Capsize Screening Formula (1.8): A value of 1.8 indicates that the boat has good bluewater capability and is suitable for ocean passages. This is below the critical threshold of 2.0, meaning the boat should handle well in rough and offshore conditions, reducing vulnerability to capsizing.

* Ballast/Displacement Ratio: While a higher percentage (above 40) suggests greater stability, this ratio does not consider the depth at which ballast is placed. For example, a deep keel with a bulb at the bottom will provide much more righting moment and stability than a keel with the same weight but spread out higher.

** Comfort Ratio: Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio favors heavy, narrow-beamed vessels with long overhangs. Modern sailboats often have lighter displacement, beamier hulls, and plumb bows, which do not score as high on this ratio despite potentially offering comfortable rides. This metric may not fully capture the comfort aspects of contemporary yacht designs.

In summary, the Wauqiuez Centurion 32 sailboat appears to be a well-balanced vessel with moderate performance and good bluewater capability, but it may not be the fastest or most spirited sailboat, particularly in light winds. The theoretical nature of these ratios aids initial evaluation but should be complemented with practical experience and specific design details for a comprehensive understanding.

Here's how to calculate the KPIs yourself -  without having to wrestle with the mathematics...

What the Yachting Press has to say about the Centurion 32...

Yachting Monthly tells us: "This elegant Holman & Pye design from 1969 is now one of the more sought-after cruiser-racers of the period. Her heavy construction and excellent finish mean she has lasted well and her good manners, combined with sprightly windward performance, make her a rewarding fast cruiser for both experienced and novice sailors. Galley and chart table are both acceptable, and she has a lead fin keel. She had two masthead rig options, although the smaller of them was the more popular."

Practical Sailor provides a comprehensive review of the Centurion 32. They highlight "its robust construction, seaworthiness, and classic design. The boat’s moderate displacement and long waterline contribute to its stability and performance. The interior layout is practical, with comfortable accommodations for cruising" .

Cruising World features an article on the Centurion 32, emphasizing its "timeless lines and well-balanced sailing characteristics. The boat’s full keel design ensures stability and predictable handling. While not a speed demon, it excels in heavy weather and offers a comfortable ride. The interior layout includes a spacious saloon, galley, and berths. Owners appreciate its durability and classic aesthetics" .

Sailing Today covers the Centurion 32 in their archives. They describe it as a "well-built, long-keeled cruiser with a strong following among enthusiasts. The boat’s performance is steady, and it handles rough seas admirably. The interior provides ample space for extended cruising. Some owners have upgraded rigging and electronics to enhance performance. It’s a reliable choice for coastal and offshore adventures".

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Centurion 32, it has too much class

How to choose your used sailboat? This week the Centurion 32, a reference from the French shipyard Wauquiez.

Emmanuel Van Deth

  • 400 copies from 1968 to 1977
  • From 15,000 euros for a model to be refreshed built before 1975. Up to 27 000 euros for a 32 refurbished and well equipped.

Centurion 32

Buy a Centurion 32 It's a bit like buying an old Jaguar. It's beautiful and timeless. When will we see a vintage version, like a Mini? Obviously, this narrow hull does not compare with more recent boats, in terms of living space or downwind performance. But the budget, ready to sail , is divided by three or four. A good reason to squeeze into the front berth, after all... especially since a couple can envisage a nice trip on board.

Centurion 32

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

You get what you pay for: the construction quality of the Wauquiez yard is not a myth. A Centurion can be completely rebuilt with confidence, because the base is always sound. A simple look under the floors will reassure you: the floors are strong. On the other hand, the engine, sails and fittings often require investments.

Centurion 32

"Like all manufactured products, the boat is sold practically by the kilo. Moreover, each kilo on board imposes its own additional square decimeter of sail area, and tucking in a 35-square-meter genoa can make you wish you'd been more diligent in attending a gymnastics club."

Jacques Monsault, owner of a 32 Centurion

Centurion 32

The advantages

  • Timeless silhouette
  • Upwind performance
  • At ease and comfortable on the high seas
  • Doesn't float at bearing gaits
  • Demanding genoa to be tucked in
  • Rather small interior volume for a 32 footer

centurion 32 yacht

But what is missing?

A better balanced mainsail/genoa distribution

a beautiful back beach

an XXL cockpit!

centurion 32 yacht

The equivalent today?

Nothing at Wauquiez ... so we fall back on the Winner 900, a discreet and sober cruiser/racer.

Broker's Comments

Boatshed Dartmouth are pleased to offer for sale this Henri Wauquiez Centurion 32 for sale. This is a classic looking Holman Pye design yacht with a good sized cockpit and a decent turn of speed. The owner tells me that the first reef does not need to go in until 20-22 knots of wind. She is also proven capable having suffered a 90 degree knockdown 40 miles off Cape Finisterre in 45 knots of wind. The owner tells me she just picked herself up, shook herself down and then carried on with three reefs. The equipment level is very high with some gear only having recently been installed (Forgen wind generator for example) and a Volvo MD2030 engine installed in 2002. Viewings are by prior appointment 6-days a week with your Boatshed Dartmouth broker, Paul
