Are these the 8 most beautiful classic sailing yachts of all time?

Moonbeam of fife iii, 1903.

The 30 metre, gaff cutter Moonbeam of Fife III epitomises beautiful classic yachts at their finest. Launched in 1903, Moonbeam of Fife is still going strong on the classic yacht regatta circuit despite being more than a hundred years old. The William Fife-designed yacht is constructed in wood with an oak hull and superstructure, while her interior joinery is well-kept mahogany. The historical yacht Moonbeam of Fife III is currently for sale .

Tuiga, 1909

Built by the renowned William Fife shipyard in Fairlie on the Clyde estuary in Scotland, Tuiga was commissioned by the Duke of Medinaceli, a close friend of the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, and has had 10 owners in 106 years. HSH Prince Albert II decided to buy her in 1995.  Tuiga  has been participating in classic yacht regattas ever since and is now the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, crewed by YCM members.

Mariette, 1915

The classic 42 metre twin-masted schooner _ Mariette of 1915  _was built by Herreshoff in the United States 100 years ago. Age has not withered her, but  Mariette of 1915  has undergone a few refits in the Pendennis yard at Falmouth in recent years: in 2010 and again in 2012 in preparation for the Pendennis Cup, in which she took first prize in the St Petroc Traditional Class as well as being crowned overall winner. In 2014 she returned to Falmouth once more for minor works.

Creole, 1927

Now owned by the Gucci family, this beautiful wooden schooner has had a colourful history. Commissioned by wealthy American Alan Cochran and launched in 1927,  Creole  has had a number of different owners and also been called Vira. When she was known as  Magic Circle , she was transformed into a minesweeper during the Second World War, having previously competed in a number of regattas and attended previous America’s Cup events. In the 1970s she was used by the Danish government for sailing training in the rehabilitation of drug addicts before being bought by the Gucci family in 1983.

Endeavour, 1934

Arguably the world’s most famous J Class,  Endeavour  was the British challenger in the 1934 America’s Cup , but was beaten by the Harold Vanderbilt-owned Rainbow . Endeavour was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, who was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft, Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour ’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen around the world, winning many races in her first season. Though she did not win the America's Cup she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

Since 1934, she has often led a perilous existence, even being sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In 1984, American yachtswoman Elizabeth Meyer bought Endeavour and she was transformed and rebuilt by Royal Huisman. Endeavour sailed again on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years. J Class yacht  Endeavour  is now for sale .

Elena, 1910

In 1910, Morton Plant commissioned 55 metre  Elena to be designed by American naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff, the so-called “Wizard of Bristol”, who made his name designing sailing yachts for America’s elite. Plant's brief was to the point: he wanted a schooner “that can win”.

Herreshoff gave Elena a slightly deeper keel than preceding designs of that time, lowering her centre of ballast, which improved her windward ability. Elena won most of her early races against the cream of the American schooner fleet and in 1928 came her crowning glory, victory in the Transatlantic Race. In 2009, she was rebuilt using the original plans for the first Elena.

Black Swan, 1899

Originally designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1899 at Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England, Black Swan started life as Brynhild with a yawl rig. She won a number of races at the beginning of the 20th century, including the King’s Cup. Over the years, she has undergone several changes and different rig configurations, and at one stage she was renamed Changrilla . She was rechristened Black Swan in the 1960s and, today, after an extensive restoration project at the Beconcini yard in La Spezia, Italy, she is now carrying a gaff-rig, designed by the Faggioni Yacht Design Studio and built by Harry Spencer.

Mariquita, 1911

Another beautiful classic yacht from Fife, Mariquita was launched in 1911. The 38.16 metre sailing yacht was designed and built for the industrialist Arthur Stothert. As part of the 19 metre Big Class racing that re-emerged in 1911, this gaff-rigged cutter is said to have inspired the J Class yachts that came after her.

She raced competitively against her brethren from 1911-1913, but by the 1950s, Mariquita was the last in the 19 metre class remaining. She was restored in 1991 and received a further refit in 2004. A star on the classic yacht racing scene, Mariquita is now for sale .

The timeless grace of the classic yachts  - a tribute to a bygone era of luxury, sophistication, and elegance; where passion for the sea meets unparalleled craftsmanship. Everyone loves the classics!

But capturing their true beauty can be a tad more tricky with their authentic sparse interior lighting, high-gloss reflective varnish, and physically challenging manoeuvrability.

When passion meets results, the outcome is truly extraordinary!

But don’t take my word for it.

A photo speaks a thousand words, so take a look….

Yacht photography tips

This article is a guide towards achieving a successful professional yacht photography session. Yacht photo shooting for professional use, such as promoting chartering or selling, is a quite complicated job that requires a very good preparation and schedule. It also requires a very good cooperation between the photographer and the captain, crew, yacht administrator or owner’s representative. Usually the yacht’s availability for a complete photography session is two up to three days including sailing outside the harbor.

Before the photography session

A meeting inside the yacht is absolutely necessary before the photography session. The captain together with the client (yacht’s administrator or owner’s representative) should show the yacht around to the photographer and discuss about what exactly is required. It is important to make clear whether the photographs are going to serve chartering, selling, both, or other need. Decisions should be made about supplementary interior decoration, bed covers and props. If the yacht has a special character such as classic, innovative, impressive woodwork etc, then detailed photographs like the ones below, should illustrate this characteristics.

Additionally all electrical equipment and other mechanisms should be checked for proper function. In this phase, the photographer will decide which pictures can be taken with the yacht in the dock and for which ones she is necessary to sail and stay outside the harbor. Generally all interior areas with small portholes or without any, can be shot inside the harbor. The rest areas, interiors with large openings and all exteriors should be photographed outside the harbor in a nice natural backdrop.

General requirements for the photography session

The yacht should be net, clean and ready for the photo session. One crew member should stay all the time together with the photographer in order to find solutions in every issue quickly and efficiently. All other crew members should be standing by.

Shooting interiors

Interior areas with small portholes like the guest cabins, guest toilets, corridors and crew areas, or areas without any openings like the engine room as well as other supplementary spaces, can be shot with the yacht in her mooring position.

In the guest cabins shots, special care should be taken in bed covers and decorating pillows, as their color is very critical.  Some alternative props for decoration for both the cabins and the toilets should be available. Usually all these shots are made with the yacht’s lights on and no additional lights.

Shooting interiors with large openings

This is a more difficult case, because the natural light coming from the large openings is generally creating a lot of issues. Natural light is much stronger and has a different color (more bluish) comparing with the artificial light. This is a big problem especially when the yacht’s interior is covered with shiny surfaces especially wooden ones. These surfaces reflect the windows highlights, altering the normal view of the area. The solution is to choose the right time when the natural light is in balance with the artificial one, which occurs late in the afternoon or early in the morning. In some rare cases, definitely when there are no shiny surfaces, photo shooting can take place in mid day. In this case, intense natural light can be used creatively and can be controlled with blades as they produce a quite pleasant effect when they are over exposed. Televisions are often a tricky element, as their images are reflected on shiny surfaces. If this happens, it is not possible to inset another image in the TV screen, therefore it is necessary to take a lot of different screen shots for selecting the best one.

The bridge is also a difficult place for photography as it has large openings and very dim light. That means that it should be quite dark outside for obtaining a light balance and get a dramatic picture with instruments lights on.

Shooting exteriors

Generally the hard mid day light is not proper for photography. Maybe only the sun deck, the “sea toys” and some close up shots look nice under hard light.

For the rest ones, it is much better to wait until late in the afternoon, even after sunset or very early in the morning. Especially some exterior shots that show interior areas as well (shooting from the stern looking forward inside the lounge), should be taken during a very narrow time gap when both natural light and yacht’s artificial light are in balance. Actually there are many interior and exterior shots which are better to be shot between half an hour before sunset and half an hour after sunset. That’s why all these places should be ready in advance, with all decorating elements in place and all crew standing by to help.

Before getting too dark it is the right time for deck shots showing the night environmental scenery. Weather conditions are also very critical when shooting exteriors. Requirements are clear sky and calm sea.

Shooting from a tender and aerial photography

Shooting a yacht from her tender, requires very good communication and cooperation between the photographer and the captain. The photographer should explain in advance the required course and speed of the yacht regarding the tender’s position. During shooting, communication with VHF should be kept all the time. Aerial photography of the yacht, is probably much more important than photography from the sea level. Photography with a drone is more flexible and less expensive comparing to hiring an helicopter, that’s why it is mostly preferable. The drone can fly anytime and as low as needed. Again, real time communication with the captain is critical. During both aerial or sea level photography, special care should be taken in every visible part of the yacht’s exterior. Crew members should be hidden but ready to fix anything needed on the decks. The drone operator with the photographer would better stay on shore (if this is possible), alternatively they could be onboard the yacht or in the tender.

Digital editing

After finishing the yacht photo shooting, an equally important work which is digital editing, is about to begin. Professional photographers are shooting “RAW” files, because they contain all the information of color, as well as shadows and highlights details. The problem is that RAW files offer very flat images, improper to be delivered right away. Every image should be processed carefully in a way that every adjustment forms a separate image “layer”, that can be modified any time. Usually every day of shooting on location, requires about two days of digital editing. Finally, two sets of all processed images should be delivered. One set of full resolution and full size files and one set of smaller ones for internet use, processed for minimum file size without visible losses.

Stuart Pearce Shares How To Take The Perfect Yacht Photo

classic yacht photography

We see innumerable amounts of Superyacht snaps on a daily basis here at Superyacht Content. Speaking honestly, this sometimes makes it easy to forget about how much work goes on behind the lens. We thought that, as we spend so much of our time sharing these images, we owe our readers some sort of inside scoop! We had a chat with Stuart Pearce, owner of Yacht Shot , to find out more about how to take the perfect yacht photo.

Composition and angle are key

“Ask any photographer, and they’ll tell you that composition is a big one,” says Stuart, matter-of-fact-ly. “It’s all about getting the right angle, which can take time as it’s not always necessarily obvious. Normally you end up finding the perfect angle when you’re there on a shoot- and no amount of planning or research can prepare you for the conditions on the day. I normally would go around the boat a few times and then decide which angles are going to look best, daylight permitting of course.”

And what about those striking aerial images taken from a helicopter? We thought they’d be a must-have for every photoshoot, but Stuart tells us otherwise.

‘’It always bewilders me that some yacht owners don’t want to pay for a helicopter!” he says, “I don’t know if it’s the brokers or the owners who pay for it… It seems a given that you’d want to shoot [the yacht] from a helicopter. But, if they don’t have the budget, then I’ll usually try and get a birds-eye from a cliff if I can.”

“Every boat has an angle that it looks best at, and it’s always different. Loads of yachts’ exterior profiles divide opinion across the industry, and worldwide, based purely on the photos released by the yachting media. I think that S/Y “A” will have a lot of people commenting on the photos. I really would love to shoot her!”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Feb 8, 2017 at 12:35am PST

Happy crew = great photos

Crew are key to making any photoshoot a success, as they play an active role in setting up the shots, preparing the boat, and sometimes even starring in the images! Stuart tells us that it’s usually a question of timing…

“I often prefer to take the photos post shipyard period, when the captain and crew are fresh and ready for the new season. You need to catch them when they’re up for it and well-rested. I like getting to know them and having fun with them, that way we get the job done really well. The crew is the most important factor, followed by the weather.”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Nov 16, 2014 at 8:41am PST

Blame it on the Weather

Weather is, of course, a huge factor when it comes to yacht photography, especially as Stuart spends a lot of his time shooting from a tender.

“If there’s too much wind, you can’t go out of course. Then there’s light to think about, and a good sunny day is every photographer’s dream. You can always edit photos, but natural lighting is very valuable- a grey day can sometimes even spell the end of a photoshoot before it’s begun!”.

So how do you keep stable when snapping yacht shots from a rocking tender?

“If you were shooting video, you would need a stabiliser, but with straight photography, this isn’t necessary as you’re shooting with super-fast [shutter] speeds. Framing an image is more difficult when you’re bobbing around, though- you’ve got to make sure you’re not cutting the top of the mast off!”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Aug 1, 2016 at 10:19am PDT

Timing (and lighting) is everything when learning how to take the perfect yacht photo

Having a solid plan ready with the crew and getting the timing right is crucial for ensuring you leave with that perfect shot. “Normally the crew has to help me just before sunrise and just before sunset. I don’t usually work past that because as soon as it’s dark there’s not a lot you can do.”

Even the most novice of photographers know how big a role good lighting can play in getting the mood and pictures right. Sunrise is one of the best times to shoot, as the light is quite special as the sun is rising. “I know some photographers who get the crew up at 4 am,” Stuart says, “though I’ve never done that, I do try to maximise the time spent onboard with natural sunlight coming into the cabins and other spaces that I photograph, but if you start too early then it can be quite tough on the crew. That being said, dawn is a great time to show off the bright colours of the interior fabrics, for example!”

Stuart also mentions that “more detailed areas such as the guest cabins and the engine rooms and a lot of the exterior look better in the bright but contrasting midday sun.” In this respect, having a timetable for which interior shots you’re planning on getting at different points of the day (and angles of the sun) is a good idea.

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Sep 16, 2016 at 2:26pm PDT

Location, location, location

Stuart explains that location is what takes a yacht photo from good, to outstanding. “I would love to go up to the Arctic to shoot a new build sailing up the North West passage. The location is important to give that spirit of adventure to the shots, especially when you’re shooting for charter brochures. A tropical background really helps too; the more exotic, the better. Of course, if the goal of the photo is to just sell that yacht, then the location isn’t so important. here I would favour more detailed interior shots and scenes which show off the yachts most desirable facilities.’’

When it comes to shooting in other, less exotic locations, a little research is necessary. “I normally would research the wind and have a look at a map to try and find an attractive bay, or something like that. At home in Mallorca, some captains will take me down to Es Trenc. It’s good to get out of the bay of Palma sometimes: and you need to choose the best possible location given the conditions on the day.”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Jun 13, 2016 at 12:08am PDT

Telling a story

Many successful photoshoots work on telling a story for the boat, so that people might relate to an anecdotal set of images depicting the experience onboard, rather than just focussing on the yacht’s look.“I haven’t shot a family charter boat yet, and I would love to tell that story of them arriving, dinner time, a cinema scene etc…” says Stuart. “You can do some really cool things if you have the right conditions and crew available; having pictures of dinner ashore with the yacht in the background, for example. I took a picture the other day with two girls walking out of the sea with the yacht at anchor in the background, that was great.”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Nov 3, 2016 at 4:11am PDT

Strike a pose

“Normally you would get professional models in who would bring their own wardrobe. This is great for the end product and cultivating an easy photoshoot. When it doesn’t work so well is when you just have friends of friends to come and do it- they don’t have the experience or the wardrobe (well, some of them don’t…)! You get what you pay for, I guess.”

Challenging stereotypes in yacht marketing is a hot topic at the moment. We’ve all seen the classic photo of the older man with the young, beautiful girl, supposedly representing the archetypal yacht guests. Stuart agrees that this kind of shot can look a little ridiculous, and prefers shooting authentic, old-fashioned fun.

“I once was shooting a family in Formentera. They were just jumping around, making everything wet… There was no pseudo-ing about it, they were just having fun. You can do posing, but you have to make it look natural. There was a series of pictures I shot where we had just the one girl in every single shot… I mean, who goes on a charter on their own?! You need to make sure the series of images represent the real thing, and having a good group of professional models on the day is the best way to do this.”

A post shared by Stuart Pearce • Photographer (@yacht_shot) on Feb 13, 2017 at 10:14am PST

Choosing the right equipment

And then there is the equipment, the tools of the trade, and the magic behind learning how to take the perfect yacht photo. Many people might need to re-mortgage their houses to get their hands on some of the most up-to-date equipment. Stuart says he’s currently using the Canon 5D Mark 4 camera, and that he’s currently working on investing in some underwater camera cases. “But they cost £4-£5k! And every time they update the camera, the case has to be replaced too. I’m a fan of Jeff Brown’s (Breed Media) half in, half out the water shots- they look cool.”

When turning up at a shoot, Stuart tends to pack “six to seven lenses, and a backup camera body. Oh, and tons of batteries, filters, tripods, and stands for the little flashes.”

Advice for budding photographers:

Well, I would say that the location of the yacht is the most important, but this is often not possible as they need the photo NOW. If it’s in La Ciotat, it’s La Ciotat, if it’s in Bora Bora then wow! I’d mainly advise photographers to plan in advance and invest once in a quality camera kit- as you won’t regret it when you get back home to start editing..”

Beautiful classic sailing yachts built or restored from a bygone era displaying exquisite craftsmanship, design and photogenic qualities. These sailing prints, whether in colour, black and white or sepia monochrome are timeless. In the UK, the pictures have been taken in the Solent with its sea colour mix of emerald and viridian around the Isle of Wight famous for the iconic Needles Lighthouse; the open waters of Carrick Roads on the Cornish Coast of England off Falmouth; and around the stunning Kyle's and islands of Scotland's west coast. Further afield the deep blue of the Mediterranean sea has provided beautiful backdrops for sailing prints for sale and framed pictures of classic sailing yachts for sale including the magnificent J Class yachts. Over the pond, the quintessentially Caribbean island of Antigua, has provided wonderful scenery and rolling waves with a long fetch to display  these classic sail boats.

The photographic prints shown here are a small selection of the thousands taken, and represent a prestige portrayal of these fine craft.

With yacht designers such as Dijkstra & Partners, Sparkman & Stephens, Simms Brothers, Nathanael Herreshoff, Laurent Giles, Charles E. Nicholson, Alfred Mylne, Hoek Design, Robert Clark, Johan Anker, and my favourite of all, William Fife III all represented here, these prints will showcase their classic lines the wall of your home, office or business.

I have had the pleasure - and some discomfort - in capturing these fine art photographs and posters. I hope you enjoy them.

Whether you search for classic yacht pictures; classic sailing prints or pictures; action sailboat images; sailing prints; yacht prints, yachting prints , sailing yacht pictures for sale UK, yachet prints; yahct pictures; yaaht prints; jclass prints for sail; j class pictures for sale; J Class boat picture for sail; classic sailing boats; classic yachting boat pics for sale; landscape photographs and prints from around the world we hopefully have you covered!

From an early background of training lifeguards and teaching aquatic classes, Jessica spent most of her life surfing competitively and teaching surf lessons around the world. She grew up in Apalachicola, Florida and began working on boats in her early 20’s where she’d spend the next decades in and out of the yachting industry between travels. She’s known for working on deck as well as tending to high profile clients down below, co-managing mega-yacht refits in the shipyard, assisting in deliveries and showing boats to those who are as enthusiastic about them as she is. Having lived on a number of boats, she expects a long future in yacht sales, chartering and traveling afloat. Today you’ll likely find her out fishing or surfing, tucked away writing music, making nautical YouTube videos or searching through listings for the next boat in her life.

Reuters: Tuapse refinery hit by drone resumes work after 3 months of repairs

Rosneft's Tuapse oil refinery has resumed processing after sustaining damage from a drone strike in January, Reuters reported on May 6, citing industry sources.

A fire broke out at the Tuapse facility on Jan. 25 following reports of a drone attack. Multiple strikes on oil depots in Russia, including in Bryansk , Oryol , and Leningrad oblasts, were reported in January, amid increasing claims of drone attacks in Russian regions bordering Ukraine.

Two industry sources told Reuters that the Rosneft plant in Tuapse has resumed operations. Repairs were completed at the facility's primary oil refining unit CDU-12 at the end of April, they said.

According to the sources, the unit's capacity totals around 250,000 barrels per day (bpd). The refinery processed 20,000 metric tons of oil on May 1, they claimed.

Rosneft's Tuapse refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai is one of the largest oil processing plants in southern Russia.

Ukraine has escalated attacks against Russia's oil industry in recent months, successfully reducing the processing capacities of multiple facilities.
