Short Answer

Yacht is pronounced with a long “a” sound, like “yawt”.

It rhymes with “bought”.

The word is typically pronounced with a soft “ch” sound at the end, like “yacht-ch”.

It is also sometimes pronounced like “yaw-cht” with a hard “ch” sound at the end.

What Is a Yacht?

A yacht is a luxurious boat or vessel, typically used for recreational purposes such as sailing, cruising, or fishing.

Yachts are typically quite large and are usually powered by either sails or motors.

They are usually equipped with a variety of features and amenities that make them perfect for leisurely activities and entertaining large groups of people.

Yachts range in size from small, personal boats to large, more elaborate vessels that can cost millions of dollars.

Yachts are often associated with wealth and status, as they are often seen as a symbol of luxury and privilege.

What is the Correct Pronunciation of Yacht?

how to pronounce a yacht

The correct pronunciation of the word “yacht” is “yot”.

It is pronounced with a soft “y” sound, followed by a short “o” sound, and ending with a hard “t” sound.

This pronunciation is the same in both American and British English.

It is important to note that the word is not pronounced with a long “a” sound like some mistakenly believe, but rather with a short “o” sound.

When saying the word, it is important to be careful not to elongate the “o” sound, as this often leads to mispronunciation.

For example, some people mistakenly pronounce the word as “yahcht” or “yawcht,” which are incorrect pronunciations.

Additionally, the “y” sound at the beginning of the word should be soft, and not pronounced as an “ee” sound like in the word “yell.

” To practice the correct pronunciation of “yacht,” it may be helpful to break the word down into its individual sounds.

Start by saying the soft “y” sound, followed by the short “o” sound, and finally the hard “t” sound.

Once you have the individual sounds down, practice stringing them together to form the word.

It may also be helpful to listen to the word being said by a native speaker, which can help you to develop your pronunciation skills.

The Phonetic Pronunciation of Yacht

The word is often used to refer to a luxury boat or vessel, typically used for recreational purposes.

In phonetics, the “y” sound of “yacht” is known as a palatal approximant, which is a sound made by bringing the front of the tongue near the roof of the mouth without creating any friction.

The “o” sound is a close-mid back rounded vowel, which is made by rounding the lips and raising the back of the tongue towards the soft palate.

Finally, the “t” sound is a voiceless alveolar stop, which is made by pushing the tongue against the roof of the mouth and releasing the air quickly.

When pronouncing the word “yacht,” the emphasis should be placed on the “t.

” The “y” and “o” sounds should be relatively short and soft, while the “t” should be strong and pronounced clearly.

Additionally, the “y” sound should be drawn out slightly longer than the other two sounds.

In addition to the phonetic pronunciation of the word “yacht,” there are also several other ways to pronounce it.

Some people pronounce the word with a “ch” sound instead of the “t,” while others pronounce it with a “j” sound.

However, the traditional and most commonly accepted pronunciation is with the “t” sound.

Worcester County Wonders: What's in a name? A lot if you're in Webster

Can you say it lake chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchubunagungamaugg.

Portrait of Sarah Barnacle

WEBSTER — What's in a name?

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the longest word in the English language. But if you ask a Webster native, it's Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchubunagungamaugg, also known as Webster Lake , home of Memorial Beach . Both are 45 letters, but if you were to count the "lake" portion of its title, the body of water takes the cake.

There are a number of spellings for the Nipmuc name, including a shortened version of Chaubunagungamaug that appears on Google Earth.

It isn't just the name that is notable. In fact, the lake is the largest natural lake found in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Three smaller bodies of water make up the large lake left by retreating glaciers during the last ice age. Several islands dot the lake, including Goat Island, Strip Island, and Long Island, which has several summer homes with running water and electricity.

Opening the small door to Webster Lake Gifts , visitors are greeted by the lengthy name decorating everything imaginable from clothing to mugs, ornaments and postcards. The woman behind the counter, who wished to remain unnamed, quickly pointed to a sheet of paper hanging to the left.

"That's from the time we were on ' Jeopardy !'," she said, adding she had to teach the show's production how to pronounce the name of the lake. She was happy to offer instruction on how to pronounce the name and suggested it's easiest to break the word apart. Here's the Jeopardy! answer:

"In this 'Bay State' some call it Webster Lake; others, Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg."

The question: "What is Massachusetts?"

The question fell under the lakes category and was worth $400. James Holzhauer got the question correct and went on to collect more than $1 million in prize money.

"Jeopardy!" is just the latest to feature the lake in pop culture. In 1954, the lake was immortalized in song with Ethel Merman's recording of "The Lake Song."

The song tells the story of the lake, and its supposed translation of "you fish on your side, I'll fish on my side, and nobody fishes in the middle." Unfortunately, this particular translation was concocted by a local newspaper reporter at the time. According to Frank King, a former musical host on WBUR radio, the name roughly translates to "English knifemen and Nipmuc Indians at the boundary or neutral fishing place,"

During the summer the lake is full of water skiers. The Nipmuc Ski team dazzles spectators on Memorial Beach on Wednesday evenings. With dozens of folding chairs and picnic blankets, the community comes out in full force to watch the skiers perform jumps, pyramids and unbelievable tricks, all while speeding across the water at 40 mph.

Wandering through the crowd, a search for anyone who might be able to pronounce the Nipmuc name of the lake was not fruitful, more than two dozen locals said they could not pronounce the name.

This past Wednesday was the last performance of the summer and drew a large crowd, including a local cheerleading squad with posters for one of their members, Jocelyn. The girls lined up in a row, each carrying a large sign containing one letter of the skier's name to cheer on one of their own.

On the other side of the beach away from the wake of the skiers, many cooled off in the shallows, taking a swim in the clean, clear water.

It isn't just swimming that draws people to some 17 miles of shoreline. If you're lucky you may spot the Indian Princess , a modern replica of the "grand riverboats" that paraded up and down the Mississippi River in the late 19th century. The boat is owned and operated by Indian Ranch, offering tours and renting out the vessel for private events on the lake.

The riverboat is just one of the unique vessels parading the lake's waters. Beach's and Cream is owned by 17-year-old Vivienne Stepka, who sells ice cream out of a small tiki-themed boat. She's graduating from high school this year and plans to head to trade school after getting her diploma.

"No, I can't say it, but I'm learning," Vivienne said of pronouncing the Nipmuc name of the lake.

Then there is Waterfront Mary's 22 , a picturesque waterfront eatery with quite the history, seemingly hidden in a residential neighborhood.

"The name of the lake, it's on the back of my shirt," bartender Theresa Venuti said before spinning around and revealing the iconic 45 letters across her back. "There's at least one person here, maybe two, that can say it and they're all locals."

There has been a bar at the location since 1908, when it was called Birch Island Pavilion. Mary's gets its name from previous owner Mary L. Dow, described as somewhat of a flamboyant character in town, known to wear colorful hats and homemade sarongs. The bar was bought from Dow's estate back in 2004 and is now run by Tracy Lis.

Customers can often be seen pulling their boats up to Mary's dock to listen to live music and enjoy all the lake has to offer. Thankfully you won't have to pronounce the Nipmuc name to grab a beer.

Olympics | Opening ceremony for Paralympics aims to reshape views of disabilities

The ceremony will see the athletes parade down a section of the champs-elysees..

how to pronounce a yacht

PARIS (AP) — Creative director Thomas Jolly has some lofty goals for Wednesday’s opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games , when the heart of Paris will once again become the stage for a stunning artistic display.

The outdoor ceremony at the Champs-Elysees and Place de La Concorde — a site where several members of the royal family were beheaded during the French Revolution — is aiming to challenge and reshape society’s perceptions of disabilities.

“When we cut off the heads of the king and queen here, it changed society once. Maybe this ceremony will be the second time we change society,” said Jolly, who was also in charge of the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics last month.

La Concorde square, in the heart of Paris, is turned into a giant open-air arena to host the Paralympic Games opening ceremony.

On Monday, under the sweltering Parisian sun, a hundred dancers, including 20 performers with disabilities, gathered at La Concorde for a final rehearsal under the secrecy of huge banners closing the square. The site hosted several competitions during the Olympics and has now been transformed into a grand open arena centered around the ancient Luxor Obelisk, the French capital’s oldest monument.

Jolly said dance will be central to the show, celebrating all types of bodies through the universal language of movement. Swedish director Alexander Ekman has crafted a rhythmic spectacle where dancers — using crutches, wheelchairs, or adapted tricycles — will interact with pulsating beats.

The music of the event is once again in the hands of Victor Le Masne, who also composed the entire score for the Paris Olympics.

A dancer performs during the rehearsal of the Paralympic Games opening ceremony.

On the eve of the Paralympic rehearsals, Le Masne welcomed a group of journalists into a secluded Parisian studio, offering a sneak peek of the track titled “Sportography,” a blend of organic sports sounds and drum rhythms that captures the essence of athleticism, incorporating real-life elements like the screeching of shoes and the hard breathing of athletes.

Reflecting on his recent collaborations with Céline Dion and Lady Gaga for the Olympic Opening Ceremony , Le Masne shared a few insights into the intense creative process.

He vividly described attending a private rehearsal at the top of the Eiffel Tower, where Dion performed “Hymn to Love” at 3 a.m., just hours before the ceremony. Despite obstacles like rain and Dion’s ongoing health challenges, Le Masne knew that her performance would be nothing short of grandiose.

And he was equally impressed by Lady Gaga.

Victor Le Masne, musical director of the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies, poses in the Question de Son studio.

“I had to work on the ‘Mon Truc en Plumes’ arrangement and then flew to Los Angeles to pitch the idea to her management,” he said. “They loved it, and Gaga immediately immersed herself in learning about French cabaret culture, even perfecting the pronunciation of the old-timey French song. Her professionalism was awe-inspiring.”

For the Paralympics, Le Masne’s approach has evolved.

“This time, I wanted to put the athletes first,” he said, emphasizing the importance of incorporating the physical and emotional sounds of sport.

The ceremony will also see the athletes parade down a section of the Champs-Elysees, Paris’s most iconic avenue, and special efforts have been made to ensure accessibility. The traditional cobblestones have been temporarily covered with a thin layer of asphalt to accommodate wheelchair users. That asphalt layer will be removed after the end of the Paralympic Games, on Sept. 8, said Thierry Reboul, who oversees all Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies.

Unlike the Olympic Opening Ceremony on the Seine, which was marked by stringent security and pouring rain, this event will allow the public to freely watch from along the Champs-Elysees and near the Louvre Museum.

The weather promises to cooperate this time, too, with bright sunshine and clear skies in the forecast.

“But we’re still pretty cautious about that last part,” Reboul joked about the weather conditions.

Why kamala harris’s centrism is working.

The vice president’s convention speech embodied her efforts to win over swing voters.

how to pronounce a yacht

By David Leonhardt

Kamala Harris capped her first month as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate with a roughly 35-minute convention speech last night that embodied her aggressive efforts to win over swing voters.

It was a patriotic speech that was hawkish on foreign policy and border security. She described the United States as the greatest country in the world — a view many Americans hold but most Democratic voters do not — and she ended by saying that being an American was “the greatest privilege on earth.” She promised to confront China, Russia, Iran and Iran-backed terrorists and to make sure that the U.S. military remained the “most lethal fighting force in the world.”

She also offered a series of populist promises to help the middle class by reducing the cost of housing and health care — policies that many independents and some Republicans favor. And she spent little if any time on subjects that inspire passion among Democrats but are either secondary or off-putting to many swing voters, such as student debt forgiveness and President Biden’s climate agenda.

You can read more about Harris’s speech in this news story , as well as in this article on how she contrasted herself with Donald Trump .

In today’s newsletter, I want to explain why Harris’s move to the political center seems to be working, at least so far.

Who vs. what

Harris has surged in the polls , erasing Biden’s deficit and taking a small lead over Trump, for two main reasons. First, she has won over some swing voters, including independents, working-class Midwesterners and even a fraction of 2020 Trump voters. Second, she has done so at no apparent cost: In addition to attracting swing voters, she has built a bigger lead than Biden had among the Democratic base, such as young voters, college graduates and city residents.

How could this be? It comes down to the difference between the who and the what of her candidacy.

Loyal Democrats are energized about the who . They spent months agonizing over Biden’s flailing candidacy. Once he quit and Harris wrapped up party support in just a few hours, everything felt different.

Democrats remembered what it was like to have a candidate who could deliver a speech without making people fret that something was about to go wrong. Harris is full of energy and joy. She can cogently explain the administration’s policies, and she seems to be having fun in the process. Amid this electricity, many Democrats have been willing to tolerate her triangulation in the service of winning.

Harris isn’t just another Democratic politician, either. She would be the country’s first female president, of course, and is a woman of color. Today’s Democratic Party puts great emphasis on identity, especially race and gender. The party defines itself in large part as the defender of groups that suffer discrimination and injustice. Just watch Tuesday night’s ceremonial roll call to nominate Harris, when delegates celebrated her historic status — and their own identities.

This focus on personal identity can give pathbreaking candidates more flexibility to stray from Democratic orthodoxy without angering the base. Barack Obama benefited from a similar dynamic in 2008. He was more moderate than some other Democratic candidates that year, yet he still excited many progressives. (Obama’s speech this week was also fairly moderate. Nonetheless, it received rapturous applause.)

For all these reasons, Harris has formed an emotional bond with liberals and others who make up the Democratic base. That bond has freed her to pursue swing voters with the what of her candidacy. She offers an economic agenda that many working-class voters support. She claims that she, not Trump, is the true candidate of border security. She encourages “U.S.A.!” chants. Last night, she referred to American history as “the most extraordinary story ever told.”

A tight race

Even so, the presidential race remains close. Harris leads in enough states to win, but only just. And if recent polls have undercounted Trump voters as much as they did in 2016 and 2020 , he would probably win an election held today.

With the convention now over, Democrats won’t be able to control the narrative the way that they have this week. Republicans have already started running ads to remind voters of Harris’s liberal past. One ad opens by calling Harris a “San Francisco radical” and showing her wearing a Covid mask while she announces her pronouns. It then includes clips in which she calls for a ban on plastic straws, supports looser immigration policies and says more police officers don’t lead to more safety. Expect to see a lot of these ads before November.

It is possible that Harris has been enjoying a temporary polling bump — from the good vibes of replacing Biden — that will soon fade. (In that case, I’ll be curious to see if Harris goes even further to moderate her image; she said nothing last night, for example, about whether she supported an “all of the above” energy policy to reduce prices.)

Nobody knows what will happen between now and Election Day. What’s clear is that Harris has run an effective first month of her campaign, managing both to consolidate Democratic support and to moderately — in both senses of the word — expand her appeal.

More from the convention

Harris’s speech included a statement of support for Israel, a denunciation of Hamas and a demand for security and dignity for the people of Gaza. It was effort to bridge the Democratic Party’s divides on the war.

Harris spoke about growing up in a working-class neighborhood with an immigrant single mother . “She taught us to never complain about injustice, but do something about it,” Harris said. “She also taught us, ‘And never do anything half-assed.’”

Harris accused Trump and the Republicans of planning to jail opponents, cut taxes for the rich and ban abortion nationwide. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said.

“My entire career, I’ve only had one client: the people,” Harris said of her background as a prosecutor and lawmaker. Trump, she argued, was running “to serve the only client he has ever had: himself.” Read a transcript of her speech .

Other speakers last night echoed Harris’s patriotic theme . Adam Kinzinger, a Republican former congressman, said, “I want to let my fellow Republicans in on the secret: The Democrats are as patriotic as us.”

Members of the Central Park Five — who as boys were wrongfully convicted of attacking a woman in 1980s New York — criticized Trump . Years ago, he called for the return of the death penalty over the case.

Celebrity appearances included the Chicks, who performed the national anthem, Kerry Washington , the singer Pink and the N.B.A. star Stephen Curry, who endorsed Harris in a video.

Harris’s grandnieces led delegates in a call-and-response about how to pronounce her name. “First you say ‘comma,’ like a comma in a sentence,” one said. “Then you say ‘la,’ like ‘la-la-la-la-la,’” the other said.

More on the campaign

Trump, calling in to Fox News after Harris’s speech, sought to distance himself from Project 2025, his conservative allies’ governing blueprint, and accused Harris of failing to fix the problems she was “complaining about.”

Trump said on social media that Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who is Jewish, had done “nothing” for Israel and called himself “the best friend that Israel, and the Jewish people, ever had.” Shapiro accused Trump of peddling antisemitic tropes .

Arizona can require people registering to vote to show proof of citizenship , the Supreme Court said.

Trump’s New Jersey golf club will host a fund-raiser to support Capitol rioters , billed as the J6 Awards Gala, next month.

Arkansas’s Supreme Court rejected an effort to put an abortion-rights amendment on the November ballot, saying the paperwork was faulty.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed to withdraw from the presidential election in Arizona. He’s scheduled to speak about his campaign’s future today.
