As a master driver, Toyoda was inspired by the power of the turbodiesel powertrains and the handling and stability of the advanced hull designs; as the Chief Branding Officer of Lexus International, he also appreciated the potential of a stylish premium performance yacht to complement the Lexus lifestyle.
This led the Marine Department to envision how a premium performance yacht might expand the Lexus brand into new areas of lifestyle and recreation. Today Lexus reveals the result of this project, a running proof-of-concept for a Lexus Sport Yacht, at Di Lido Island on Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach, Fla.
DESIGN A brief for an open sport yacht for recreational day-touring with six to eight guests, powered by twin high- performance Lexus V8s and with advanced styling and handling was given to the Lexus Design Center in Toyota City, Japan. In the summer of 2015 concepts from the design team were evaluated by Senior Managing Officer Tokuo Fukuichi, Chief Officer of Global Design and President of Lexus International Co., Senior Managing Officer Shigeki Tomoyama in charge of the Toyota Marine Department, and President Toyoda.
“For the Lexus Design Center this project has been very exciting. The effort is valuable to us as it stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design and lifestyle possibilities outside of the automotive realm we know well.” The selected proposal continued to be refined throughout 2015 as the Marine Department engineered the construction and onboard marine systems.
As a concept, the Lexus Sport Yacht revealed at Miami is a bespoke one-off project with no production intent. To produce this single example the Marine Department selected the Marquis-Carver Yacht Group of Pulaski, Wisconsin, USA, based on their in-house engineering and manufacturing capabilities and their skill in large hand- laid composite structures. FEATURES The design of the Lexus Sport Yacht concept has the upper deck and outer hull seamlessly bonded around the inner structure, each piece a single massive hand-laid composite of two-part polyurethane epoxy resin reinforced with hand-laid woven carbon fiber cloth, a composite material called carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, or CFRP. CFRP is the technology used in the structure of racecars and supercars like the 202 mile per hour (325 kmh) 553 horsepower Lexus LFA, high-performance military and civilian aircraft, competition skis and bicycles, and world-class racing sailboats.
The Lexus Sport Yacht concept’s unique CFRP construction saves nearly 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) compared to a similar yacht in fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). The underwater hull design is stepped to reduce resistance or drag and improve handling balance at high speeds.
The captain controls and monitors onboard systems from a color touchscreen panel at the helm; screens show GPS navigation, digital charts, surface radar, underwater sonar, lighting and entertainment systems. The captain’s seat is power adjustable; the armrests fold out to become jump seats on each side for very special guests.
The forward passenger cabin is inviting in luxurious Lexus leather with wood and glass details. A standing height, sofa seating for six with a table, and air conditioning create a comfortable environment for intimate entertaining. The galley features a two-burner stove, sink and under-counter refrigerator; a beautifully finished head includes a shower.
An integrated audio-video entertainment system is fully networked, with 4G WiFi & WAN. Sound reproduction is by Revolution Acoustics surface-mounted drivers using the ceiling panel as a transducer, powered by a Mark Levinson® Reference digital amplifier. SPECIFICATIONS, preliminary values:

The LY 650 is a new embodiment of Lexus’ challenge to go beyond the automobile to deliver innovative and amazing experiences.
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES (September 19, 2019)—In its continuing challenge to deliver innovative and amazing experiences to its customers, Lexus held the world premiere of its first luxury yacht, the Lexus LY 650, today in Boca Raton.
The LY 650 is a new embodiment of Lexus’ challenge to go beyond the automobile to deliver innovative and amazing experiences. Based on the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept first shown in January 2017, the LY 650 features unique styling and superb cruising performance. Lexus – which aspires to be a true luxury lifestyle brand - has fused advanced technology and craftsmanship to provide an irreplaceable experience that stimulates the senses and exceeds owner expectations, even at sea.
This LY 650 flagship yacht is the new embodiment of the Lexus “CRAFTED” philosophy, to which exquisite attention to detail and anticipatory hospitality are applied in every possible aspect.
The shape of the hull, the abundant volume of the stern, and other elements, in addition to beautiful curved lines, give the LY 650 unprecedented and distinctive exterior styling.
Collaboration with Italian yacht design studio Nuvolari Lenard*1 has resulted in an advanced design and a comfortable interior living space that exemplifies high quality in every detail.
Furthermore, in pursuit of cruising that achieves the exhilarating performance of a Lexus, the yacht rides on a light and highly rigid composite hull that combines CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced plastic) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced plastic), and was jointly developed with Marquis Yachts LLC*2. Additionally, the LY 650 is equipped with LY-Link, an advanced connectivity technology for boating that shares timely information and provides control of various yacht functions.
The LY 650 is built in collaboration with the craftspeople of Marquis Yachts in Pulaski, Wisconsin, USA. With the start of LY 650 manufacturing, Marquis Yachts has applied the famous Toyota Production System in its production processes to improve production efficiencies and quality. The new yacht will appear at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida Oct. 30 – Nov. 3, 2019.
President Akio Toyoda commented: "The LY 650 symbolizes the challenge taken by Lexus, which aspires to be a true luxury lifestyle brand, to venture beyond the automobile.
A collaborative team between Toyota and Marquis Yachts introduced the Toyota Production System to the boat manufacturing facility to improve productivity and quality.
This allowed the Lexus “CRAFTED” philosophy of anticipatory hospitality and meticulous attention to detail to become a reality in the form of a luxury yacht. I am truly looking forward to seeing the advanced, high quality LY650 display its beauty on the oceans across the globe. As a mobility company, we are pursuing new possibilities for mobility even on the sea."
The premiere yacht features an optional two-tone color scheme that highlights its one-of-a-kind form and captures the image of the Lexus Sports Yacht Concept from 2017. Metallic accents on the bow, side windows, and the vessel’s L-shaped air intakes create the iconic image of a Lexus yacht.
The interior fuses advanced design and omotenashi (Japanese hospitality that sincerely and warm heartedly anticipates and fulfills people’s needs) in pursuit of high quality that is distinctively Lexus and features a bright, white-themed interior space for a sense of openness, while the use of curving lines and creative lighting provide a comfortable sense of envelopment.
The salon’s efficient layout features dual captain’s seats and sofas set forward and a galley set aft. Below the salon are three elegant berths with 6 feet and 6 inches (more than two meters) of headroom, each with a private head with shower.
To achieve the exhilarating performance of a Lexus, the LY 650 was meticulously designed and engineered to provide both cruising comfort and dynamic response to the helm in any yachting situation.
The powertrain features twin Volvo Penta® IPS*3 engines (1350/1200/1050). By integrating these with a unique underwater-hull shape achieved through the application of computational fluid dynamics modeling, Lexus was able to achieve not only high output and low fuel consumption, but also exceptional cruising stability and maneuverability. The LY 650 also boasts an array of piloting-support functions, including joystick control, fixed-point position-holding at sea, and an auto-flap function.
The underwater hull and the upper part of the hull are constructed of CFRP for lightness and high rigidity, contributing to remarkable high-speed performance and a comfortable cruising experience. Sandwich panels with excellent soundproofing qualities are used in the main walls to help ensure exceptional quietness for uninterrupted conversation.
LY-Link, an advanced technology for boat connectivity, shares and provides various information in a timely manner. The technology can be used to monitor the vessel and have notifications sent via text message should an abnormality be detected. It also enhances convenience by enabling users to remotely turn on and turn off such components as the yacht’s air conditioning system and lights via a smartphone.
From the captain’s seat, both style and high operability come into play, thanks to a stylish instrument panel with touchscreen operation.
An available custom Mark Levinson® Surround Sound System with a subwoofer system creates an immersive concert hall-like acoustic space in the salon.

Marquis and toyota team up to design and launch a high-performance runabout….
Marquis Yachts LLC, makers of Marquis and Carver yachts, has partnered with Toyota Motor Corporation's marine division to engineer and build a prototype concept boat with a luxury mission worthy of the Lexus brand. The result is a sensually stylish, 42-foot open sports boat informed by the Lexus design language. The Lexus Sport Yacht made its debut on 12 January at a Lexus-hosted "Through the Lens" global media event in Miami, Florida.
The idea, two years in the making, came about when Toyota’s CEO, Akio Toyoda, was testing one of the marine division's new boats that use Toyota diesel engines. He wanted to see what a sports yacht inspired by Lexus design would look like. The result is certainly a step up the luxury ladder from the mid-90s when Toyota first entered the marine market with the Epic line of inboard ski boats.
The carbon fibre prototype, built by Marquis in Wisconsin, is equipped with twin Lexus V8 engines that share the same bright blue-painted intake manifolds as the Lexus RC F. Their combined 880 horsepower provide a top speed in excess of 40 knots.
"In building the Lexus Sport Yacht concept, we managed and administered a quality programme to their exacting standards and expectations: we'll apply what we've learned to all Marquis and Carver Yachts going forward," says Paul Liss, Vice President of Operations & Manufacturing at Marquis. "We worked with extreme tolerance levels to construct this boat: essentially these are aerospace-like tolerances and specifications."
Marquis also collaborated closely with Diesel Center Frabetti Design in Italy, and with the Lexus designers and Toyota Marine engineers in Japan, to meet the exacting quality and performance standards expected of a Lexus-branded product.
"This project used all the in-house capabilities we have at our disposal,” says Josh Delforge, Vice President of Design at Marquis, “including engineering, modelling, mould-making, lay-up of composite structures, metal shop fabrication, upholstery, paint and other techniques, to come to life."
The initiative follows forays by other premium automotive brands into the world of powerboat design, including Aston Martin with its AM37 and the Arrow 460GT from Mercedes. Unlike its high-performance rivals, the Lexus project was kept under the radar during development, but judging from the above images the two-tone dayboat is every bit as sleek and polished.
But don’t expect to see the Lexus Sport Yacht on sale anytime soon. Although the prototype is up and running, much like a concept supercar it is intended as a one-off project and sadly there are no current plans to put it into production.

Following on from the one-of-a-kind concept boat it revealed at the beginning of 2017, Lexus has announced a second, larger yacht — and this one’s set to actually going on sale to the public. Meet the Lexus Sport Yacht.
The new boat increases the size from last year’s 42-foot cruiser – which only had space for eight members of the 1% – to a massive 65-foot monster with enough space for 15 public school alumni.
Lexus isn’t normally a brand you’d associate with the open seas, but it looks like this isn’t just a co-branding opportunity.
The previous boat featured a 5.0 litre Lexus V8 engine, which could also be found in the Lexus RC F coupe and the new LC 500 coupe, while the incoming Lexus Sport Yacht will pack two 5.0-litre V8s to help power its 885bhp capacity and top speed of 49mph.
The yacht will also draw upon Lexus’s Mobility Services Platform to provide smartphone integration, diagnostics and maintenance.
Overall, the yacht draws from the Lexus Design department, while being engineered by the Marine Division of Toyota, its parent company. Manufacturing will be handled in partnership with Marquis-Larson, a specialist in boat manufacturing.
While the previous, smaller model was only produced as a one-off concept, Lexus plans for the new yacht to go on sale in the US in the latter half of 2019 at a price that’s to be announced. If your hobbies include buying football clubs and beluga caviar, we’re sure it’ll be very affordable.
Other high-end car manufacturers that have started playing pirates recently include Porsche, Aston Martin and Bugatti.

One-of-a-kind watercraft created to showcase motor manufacturer's drive into luxury lifestyle..
Lexus has shown us landlubbers that it doesn't just do luxury on the road by revealing a high-tech, high-performance sport yacht influenced by the styling and engine power of its sports cars.
The unveiling of the Lexus Sport Yacht took place in the decadent surroundings of Miami Beach, Florida where IBTimes UK was invited to step on-board to take an exclusive peek of its motoring and maritime innovation.
The two-tone, open-top day tourer is as sleek and polished as any Monaco-residing oligarch or Bond villain could desire with a finish that's undeniably premium, impressively plush and typically Lexus. On the open water the 12.7 metre long boat looks like something that's been Photoshopped into real life as a result of its splashy, concept design.
"For the Lexus Design Centre this project has been very exciting. The effort is valuable to us as it stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design for lifestyle possibilities outside of the automotive realm we know well," said Yoshihiro Sawa, executive vice president of Lexus International.
Ahoy there! Lexus has gone and made a speedboat. This is the concept Lexus Sport Yacht #LexusLens pic.twitter.com/fnAc0v47iI — IBTimesUK Technology (@IBTimesUKTech) January 12, 2017
Where car-meets-boat is in the construction of the structure of the hull where the outer hull is bonded seamlessly with the inner frame with one large piece of composite material consisting of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic. This is the same structure used in the Lexus LFA as well as some aircraft and skis. As well as sounding rather clever, this manufacturing process means it weighs in at nearly 1000kg lighter than similar fibreglass yachts.
Visible through a glass enclosure at the stern, it's powered by twin 5-litre V8 engines based on those found in the Lexus RC F coupe and new LC 500, producing over 885hp in total for a top speed of 49mph (43 knots). On-board a large colour touchscreen on the dash as well as another on the steering wheel provides all the essential information of GPS, surface radar and underwater sonar. It also controls the yacht's Mark Levinson-tweaked entertainment system, which its eight passengers living it up on the Lexus leather clad seating can enjoy.
Toyota – which Lexus is a division of – is no stranger to the boating world with its own maritime department launched back in 1997, and that has already been borrowing advanced technology methods from the design of its luxury cars to create its boats. But, don't hold your breath in anticipation of seeing this on the water anytime soon. The Sport Yacht is a bespoke, one-off project intended to see how Lexus' luxury can be pushed into other lifestyle arenas with no production intent.
As Lexus continues to reinvent its brand and push luxury into other aspects of life it's not yet ventured in, this opulent Sport Yacht might just be a drop in the ocean over the next 18-months.
Just don't call it the Japanese Sunseekser.

Lexus sport yacht.
Curious as to what a Lexus vessel might look like, Toyota motors president Akio Toyoda decided to go ahead and build one. The Lexus Sport Yacht is the result. Created by the Lexus Design Center and built by Marquis-Carver in Wisconsin, this 42-foot, eight passenger yacht has the same combination of power and luxury as the company's cars. It's powered by a pair of 5.0L V8 engines producing 880 total hp, enough to hit speeds of up to 43 knots, helped along by CFRP construction that saves more than a ton over a fiberglass build. The cockpit is home to a color touchscreen that lets the pilot monitor and control all aspects of the ship, and high-end finishes of leather, wood, and glass offer the same comforts you'll find in Lexus' land-locked transports.

That said, the Ranger Hoodie LT is still fully equipped for Spec-Ops missions: In fact, for over a decade, it's been trusted by both adventurers and soldiers across all seven continents. That's because while it can keep you both warm and dry with its DWR coating and advanced thermal properties, and there are thumb slots to help you layer, there are also mesh vents to regulate your temperature, whether you're climbing through snowy terrain or laying low while a rain storm passes overhead. No matter the situation, the Ranger Hoodie LT helps you stay ready with six ergonomically placed pockets on the biceps, forearm, chest, hips, and lower back for all of your essentials.
