FORMER Real Madrid playmaker and Italy international Antonio Cassano has been hospitalised in Italy after contracting Covid-19.

His wife Carolina Marcialis confirmed that the 39-year-old had tested positive for the virus over the Christmas period.

Former Real Madrid forward and Italy international Cassano is in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19

He contracted the virus in the final days of 2021, but after spending 'several days' isolating, now requires hospital treatment after his condition worsened.

He was admitted to hospital today, according to local outlet Genova Today .

Cassano is receiving treatment at the San Martino hospital in Genoa due to suffering from complications due to the virus.

However, Marcialis has taken to social media to reassure fans that the former pro is 'doing well' in hospital.

She wrote on her Instagram story that husband Cassano: "Is in hospital and doing well."

She also claimed that Cassano has received two doses of vaccination against Covid, contrary to some media reports.

Regarded as a player who possessed brilliant natural ability, Cassano's career never really reached the heights it was expected to.

He struggled with weight problems, and had a terrible disciplinary record as a player that saw him in tangles with referees and even his own team-mates.

Cassano spent two years with Real Madrid, but made just 19 appearances for the LaLiga giants, although he did win the title in 2007.

But his weight became such a concern that he was fined for every gram he was overweight, and was eventually banished from the first team squad by manager Fabio Capello.

His real success came in his home land Italy, where he turned out a combined 400 times during spells with multiple Serie A clubs.

Cassano won the league title with AC Milan in 2011, and also played for the likes of Roma, Sampdoria and Inter, among others, before retiring in 2018.

The controversial figure also played 39 times for Italy, between 2003 and 2014, but wasn't part of the Azzurri's 2006 World Cup winning squad.

Antonio Cassano Opens Up About His Life and Career

Antonio Cassano Opens Up About His Life and Career

Antonio Cassano opens up candidly on " Passa dal BSMT ", the podcast by Gianluca Gazzoli . One of the most significant parts of the interview is about Fantantonio's relationship with his father: "When I was a child, he didn't give a damn about me," Cassano said. "At one point, I told my mother, 'Choose, either here or there.' I was 12 or 13 years old. My mother chose me. I've never told anyone this. I've never had a parent."

Antonio Cassano, who is the former footballer of Inter and Roma: career, controversies, and the "cassanas"

The Relationship with the Absent Father

The former footballer talks about the last contact he had with his father, dating back to 1999: "He resurfaced the day after the goal against Inter (his first in Serie A, ed.), on December 19. I told him, 'There's no point in showing up, you go your way and I'll go mine.' From that day on, I never saw him again. I never cared about anything. Because it's easy to go to a child when you need something. Oh no, I'm not a fool." Fantantonio's father, Gennaro Cassano , died in 2010.

Antonio Cassano also talked to Gianluca Gazzoli about his difficult childhood without a father: "My mother did everything and more, working, making fried food on the street, having no money. When it rained and she couldn't sell the fried food, I had to go to the deli and ask, 'Can you give me some mortadella because I need to eat?' Or a sandwich that cost 200 lire, we're talking about 25-30 years ago." He forced his mother to make a decision: "I left home for three days and she couldn't find me anymore. She had to choose between her husband and her son. When you grow up in the old city with a thousand difficulties, at 12-13 years old you either grow up or you're finished." The former striker concluded this painful chapter by stating, "The great love I have for my children is probably because I never lived with and had a male parent."

Cassanate and Tapiri

"The only mistake I wouldn't make again is disrespecting the president of Sampdoria Riccardo Garrone . He was like a father, and I regretted it after two minutes," Antonio Cassano relives the film of his career, marked by applause-worthy plays but also excessive behaviors, entered into the Treccani dictionary as "cassanas." He recounts the episode in Genoa: "The week before Inter-Sampdoria they sought me out to collect the award for best player of the previous season, where we finished fourth. I didn't feel like doing it. I made the assist for the 1-1 and played a great match. The following Tuesday he called me to ask for it again. But I didn't want to, and there was also my friend Gigi D'Alessio's concert at Carlo Felice. He then told me that he was no longer talking to me as a father to a son but was imposing it on me as president. When I heard this, a black veil fell in front of my eyes, and I pushed the rolling chair he was sitting on." I left saying a lot of swear words. When he left, after 20 minutes I called him three times because I regretted it, and he reassured me there were no problems. At dinner, he talked about it with his children, who took the opportunity to terminate the contract. We went to court, which I lost. I was then offered a 20 million release clause to be paid if I disrespected a storekeeper or president. Knowing that I'm a fool and that I could send someone to hell, I went to Milan."

He still feels a bit the weight of that choice today: "Before Garrone 's death, we hugged, and I feel a little more at ease." On the other hand, he doesn't regret: "I'm not convinced I'm right, but everything else I've done, I would do it again." To the many episodes that made the news, there were just as many tapiri: "I've received 23, but I could have 50 or 70. Staffelli has become a dear friend of mine, every week he tells me he could bring me another one. The first was a fight in 2001 in Rome because I didn't want to let him pass. He threw himself on a lawn with the risk of breaking his head."

The Difficult Childhood

"If I didn't become a footballer, what would I have done? Would I have gone stealing?" El Pibe de Bari asks bluntly during the interview with Gianluca Gazzoli , who asks him about his complicated childhood in Puglia: "Until I was 17, I only had my mother and didn't even have 500 lire to eat. After the goal in Bari-Inter, the first thing I thought was that I would become rich thanks to my dream of playing football. Before, only my mother noticed me, when I came home, I found 3,000 people. I had become beautiful, rich, and famous. Money makes even the blind see. I sent everyone away."

He also explains his relationship with money: "I never had vices except for food because I eat like an animal. A player who earned a lot and squanders all the money makes me feel sorry. The only madness I did was in the first year of contract with Sensi's Roma: I bought nine cars, including two Mercedes and two Ferrari , in one year." When asked how he wants to be remembered, he has no doubts in his answer: "A good guy even if crazy. When Chiellini , Buffon , and Totti tell me this, it pleases me. I'm complicated to deal with, but I don't need to kiss ass like for work. Many want to be your friends for money or visibility. But my mother told me that we come from the sidewalks, and we won't go back there."

Discussions with Totti

yacht antonio cassano

Antonio Cassano arrives in Rome when Francesco Totti was already a great player. The captain takes him into his home as a younger brother: "The first four months I lived at Fiorella and Enzo 's house, who made me feel like their third son. They fed me and washed my clothes. One day I argued with them because I couldn't find the paycheck and told Totti that they had stolen it from me. In the end, it was under the seat of my car, but the first month they had stolen all my money, and I was afraid of even my shadow. We made peace through Vito Scala ." A truce that didn't last long, though: "I had a verbal agreement with Franco Sensi for the renewal. But I had quarreled with his daughter Rosella , so she didn't want me. When I found out that Montella and Totti had renewed, I went to the locker room to insult them. We went 6-7 years without speaking." Now the relations between the two have significantly improved and returned to how they were.

It is striking how in the podcast Antonio Cassano mentions Lele Adani , who accompanied him in the studio, and Nicola Ventola , their adventure companion. However, the name of Bobo Vieri is never mentioned: "We created everything thanks to Lele . When at a certain point you pull, it breaks, and you can no longer sew it back together. Betrayal is the worst thing in life, something I don't accept. I don't want to give importance to that person and for me, it's a closed chapter, I won't even call him by name anymore." The former striker removes some pebbles from his shoes: "Did you think you were the strongest? Instead, we are the three of us. Are you convinced? Go alone and stick to it, now not even your mother follows you."

A situation that wouldn't have saddened him too much: "Better to realize it before than after when it's too late. We suffered only because for a long time we couldn't do our things. But the show was in three, not four. The one who did everything was Lele. Now we take our path happily." A few months after the recording of the episode, Viva il futbol, the program of the Adani-Cassano-Ventola trio, began.

What He Does Today

yacht antonio cassano

Antonio Cassano has chosen Genoa as his home: "I'm not moving from here. Carolina would live in other cities like Paris , Milan , and London . I am a humble houseworker, if the boss and the children want, I'll have to leave." The city has stolen his heart: " Genoa is beautiful to me, but the Genoese are heavy. We have the city with the most old people in Italy, who annoy you and bother you. The Genoese always grumble, but I love Genoa." His typical day is structured like this: "I wake up at 7 in the morning and take the kids to school. At 8:15 I have breakfast, and at 9:30 I start playing padel. I play 2-3 hours of padel matches of a certain type and others with certain friends who are lazy. I am a Gattuso of this sport, but from Serie D I have reached Serie B. If you hear all the former players, they tell you they are strong, but it's not like that."

yacht antonio cassano

A dive into the past when Cassano was 25 years old and met his current wife Carolina Marcialis : "We met in a trattoria. She was 17 years old, and her mother told her to be careful because I would have devoured her. I was her first boyfriend, but I felt that if she gave me a chance, she would be the woman of my life." She made him the happiest man in the world with two children, one of whom is named Lionel after Messi : "At home, I'm worth as much as a two of clubs when spades are trumps. She liked Samuel, when she told me to sign for Lionel, I was very happy. I notified the whole world, and Messi found out through Zanetti. I have a good relationship with him, when we see each other, we hug." Now they have grown, Christopher is 13 years old, and Lionel is 11. Antonio has found himself dealing with parental duties: "I always tell them that I'm good, your mother is the right one who disciplines you. I can't say no even once because of the love I feel for them." Seeing them grow, he also had moments of sadness: "When I tell them to study and do well in school, they respond, 'There's no point in giving me advice, dad. You got held back six times.' I don't want them to do like me, who was stupid." And again: "He asked me to drop them off twenty meters from school and not to greet them. To show that they are older, that they go to school alone. I left crying."

Former Italy star Antonio Cassano announces retirement... again

Antonio Cassano has announced his retirement from playing for the second time, only five days after he had begun training with third-tier club Virtus Entella.

Ex-Italy international forward Cassano, whose club career included spells with AC and Inter Milan and Real Madrid, last played competitively for Sampdoria in 2016.

The 36-year-old, who trained with Verona last summer -- after which he declared he would retire -- said in a statement released via reporter Pierluigi Pardo : "Over the last few days of training, I realised that I no longer have the mentality to train consistently.

"In order to play football, you need passion and talent but above all determination, and at this moment I have other priorities.

"Now the second half of my life begins. I am curious and fired up to prove, first of all to myself, that I can do good things even without the help of my feet."

Cassano said he wanted "to thank all the friends and teammates I worked with over the years, the opponents, the coaches and directors (yes, even those I had arguments with)."

He added: "Above all I want to salute the fans, those on my side and in opposition, because without them football would not exist.

"Football has given me so much. It allowed me to meet magnificent people, great champions and common folk. It took me off the street, gave me a marvellous family and, above all, allowed me to have so much fun."

The list of footballers who have indulged themselves with a playboy lifestyle is endless - but Antonio Cassano perhaps tops the lot.

A self-destructive hothead with a penchant for food and sleeping with women, as well as an array of questionable quotes, Cassano lived the high life until the luxury took an explosive toll.

His latest foray into the headlines came after his admission over an obsession with Nutella.

The now 38-year-old endured an unhappy two years at Real Madrid, a spell dogged by his poor physique and fitness, and has partially blamed the club for the downfall.

Cassano arrived at the Bernabeu aged 23 - a time when footballers are expected to develop and hone their talents before flourishing.

In this case, however, his early adult years triggered the beginning of a spectacular spiral.

He arrived overweight, managed to shed the pounds, but then piled them back on again. The cause? Endless tubs of hazelnut flavoured spread.

The 38-year-old has opened up on how eating Nutella saw him pile on 14 kilos at Real Madrid

'Nutella was one of the sponsors of the club and each month they gave us five kilos of product,' Cassano said.

'When (Fabio) Capello arrived I scored two goals in two games and I felt like the king of the world. After that he replaced me against Lyon, I argued with him in Jerez and he took me out of the team.

'In seven months I gained 14 kilos. I ate Nutella directly from the bottle and I didn't care. I was ashamed.'

The name drop of Capello isn't the least bit surprising. After all, Cassano had once told the former England boss he was a 'piece of s***' and 'more fake than Monopoly money.'

This type of outburst remained a constant in the wild Italian's life. He himself admitted to being 'a problematic guy' - and his devilish desire for sex and food earmarked a truly extraordinary career.

Cassano claims he had slept with between 600 and 700 women before he turned 25 and insisted he typically enjoyed a 'great match' after intercourse.

His brash personality is a stark contrast to his humble upbringing. He was born into poverty in Bari and raised solely by his mother after his father abandoned them.

It was on the streets of his testing neighbourhood that Cassano first developed his football skills. A spot in Bari's youth system soon followed.

After catching the eye there, Cassano received a promotion to the first team in 1999. His arrival into the spotlight arrived soon after against Inter Milan.

A 17-year-old Cassano showed the courage and self-belief to take down a pass forward brilliantly, before ghosting beyond Christian Panucci and Laurent Blanc.

Having disposed of two timeless defenders with a nonchalance most of his peers could only have dreamed of, Cassano fooled the goalkeeper with a dummy and buried his strike inside the near post.

Jaw-dropping, timeless and outrageous - just as the enigma is remembered today.

That goal helped haul Cassano out of the temptations that lurked around the dark corners of his home city.

'If it wasn't for that game against Inter I would have become a thief or worse; either way, a delinquent,' he admitted in his 2008 autobiography. 'A lot of people that I know have become involved in that life.'

But the start of his furious, and regular, arguments with Capello would soon follow.

Cassano moved to Roma in 2001, aged 19, for a fee of £26million. The price tag earned him the accolade of being the world's most expensive teenager at the time.

Despite his sudden burst into fame, Cassano was unable to prevent his achievements on the field being hounded, and even overshadowed, by his shenanigans away from it.

After being left out of a practice match, Cassano feuded with Capello. It was in the fallout from the bust-up that both men would regularly tell each other to 'f*** off'.

The two-time Serie A Young Footballer of the Year winner was also known to target match officials with his fury.

A red card brandished towards Cassano during the 2003 Coppa Italia final triggered the youngster to direct a devil horns sign towards the referee.

Luigi Delneri then replaced Capello and took a more hardline stance over Cassano's controversial antics. The new coach wasted no time in kicking him out of his squad.

Luckily for Cassano, a route back was extended to him with the hiring of Bruno Conti and he was named captain.

Even this responsibility wasn't enough to prevent Cassano from nosediving towards oblivion.

Ill-natured talks with Roma over a new deal led to a breakdown in their relationship and Francesco Totti also found himself on the wrong end of Cassano's ire.

The team-mates had appeared on a TV show - and Cassano's grievances arose as a result of the fee they received.

His club decided to cut their losses and offload him - with a move to Real Madrid arising in 2006 for a fee of just over £4m.

Despite having moved to the esteemed LaLiga giants, Cassano's personal life continued to be dogged by the same habits.

He detailed in his book how his sordid lust for pastries and women was fulfilled thanks to a friend who worked as a hotel waiter.

'His job was to bring me three or four pastries after I had sex,' Cassano wrote.

'He would bring the pastries up the stairs, I would escort the woman to him and we would make an exchange.

'He would take the girl and I would take the pastries. Sex and then food, a perfect night.'

Madrid quickly attempted to crack down on Cassano's overindulgences.

Some divisive off-field antics saw Cassano (C) put on weight and led to the moniker 'El Gordito'

Some divisive off-field antics saw Cassano (C) put on weight and led to the moniker 'El Gordito'

He was fined for every gram he was overweight - leading to a new nickname, 'El Gordito'. In English, the translation is 'The Little Fatty'.

To make matters worse, his time at the club took another explosive lurch when Capello took up the reins.

The bitter reunion between the two figures, akin to a renewed showdown between two characters in a Marvel comic book, immediately gave way to the simmering tensions of the past.

After a clash at Tarragona, Cassano's 'Monopoly' rant took place and Capello imposed a suspension.

The fractured and irreparable relationship between them saw Cassano attempt to source a move away.

A spell at Sampdoria, which began with a loan stint, signalled the next chapter in his rollercoaster career.

Almost three years passed without an incident of note, although Cassano's unruly manner did lead to an unsavoury ending.

Cassano refused to attend an awards presentation night in a move which angered club president Riccardo Garrone.

Garrone looked to have the bad boy's deal torn up for gross misconduct - although a tribunal instead decided that Cassano's wages should be cut in half.

The irate chief later told Tuttosport that Cassano 'could have been one of the greatest players in the world' if not for his unruly 'temper'.

Despite the controversy that plagued his career, Cassano scored 10 goals in 39 caps for Italy

Cassano was shipped out to AC Milan in 2010. His time in the fashion capital of the world passed by without a single hitch - until a near-death experience, that is.

On the way back from a victory over former club Roma, Cassano began to feel unwell on the team bus from the airport.

He was soon diagnosed with an ischemic stroke by doctors after being taken to hospital.

'We argued for half an hour before I agreed to visit the hospital,' he later admitted. 'And that is when I started to have trouble speaking and thought about seeing my son again.'

Surgery was carried out to mend his heart issue and a return to the pitch followed six months later in April 2012.

The serious health scare did little to prevent Cassano from slipping back into his rebellious nature, however.

Further moves to Inter Milan, Parma, Sampdoria and Hellas Verona rounded off his eccentric career.

His time at the San Siro was marked by an alleged bust-up with coach Andrea Stramaccioni. The two men were said to have pushed and shoved each other in the dressing room after a training session.

Cassano announced his retirement in September 2017, despite having changed his mind on five occasions.

A final chapter promised much with Serie C outfit Virtus Entella, but the adventure was promptly cut short after just a week.

His boots remain stored away to this day.

Now married to water polo player Carolina Marcialis, and with the happy couple having celebrated their ten-year anniversary last year, Cassano leads a different life.

They have two sons, Christopher and Lionel - named after Barcelona superstar Messi.

There may have been little romanticism during Cassano's polarising career but there can be no denying the sheer size of the 'what if?' question he leaves behind.

Provided his cupboards are filled to the brim with Nutella, he may not mind.
