Marinas and Yacht Harbours in Portugal
- Accommodation
Portugal has founded its glory and wealth on the epic feats of expert navigators who set out from its shores to discover new lands. Along the hundreds of kilometers of its coastline are scattered ports of all kinds, including both busy commercial ports and marinas for tourist use.
Relive the charm of the epic maritime exploits of yesteryear by arriving at and departing from one of Portugal’s marinas . No adventures into the unknown, everything will take place in the utmost safety: the main marinas in Portugal are modern and well equipped. And if you do not have a boat in many locations you can rent one.
Having a boat (yours or rented) will allow you to discover hidden coves, enter sea caves, admire the shapes and colors of the cliffs along the coast, sunbathe lying on lonely beaches not accessible by land. In short, experience Portugal from a different and fascinating perspective, the most beautiful for those of you who love the sea, the sound of the waves, the coolness of the sea breeze.
Start planning your itinerary at sea by taking a look at which are the best marinas in Portugal . We have divided them by area (north and center, Lisbon and surroundings, south, islands), so you can find the right marina for you faster.
Marinas in northern and central Portugal
The best landing point in northern Portugal is the Marina of Viana do Castelo , near the mouth of the Lima River and only a 10-minute walk from the city center.
It is the first Portuguese marina one encounters when sailing south from Spain and is an excellent base to anchor the boat and explore the fascinating Minho region or sunbathe on a Costa Verde beach.
Going further south, you will encounter other well-equipped marinas around the Farol de Barra, the highest lighthouse in Portugal and an important reference point for all sailors.
You can dock in Carregal (near Ovar), in Torreira or in Figueira da Foz . The latter is a lively seaside resort with a huge beach and an old-fashioned atmosphere, with good connections to the cities of Coimbra, Porto or Lisbon and a lively nightlife. It is an ideal destination suitable for different types of travelers, with proposals for all ages.
The Marina of Figueira da Foz is located at the mouth of the Mondego River; the city center can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
Other marinas in northern and central Portugal are:
- Póvoa do Varzim
- Douro Marina in Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto)
- Marina Porto Atlântico in Leixões (near Porto)
- Marina Quinta da Barca in Esposende (province of Braga)
Marinas in Lisbon district
The Lisbon district and the surrounding areas offer many safe harbors. If you want to experience the thrill of arriving by boat in one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals, you can dock at the Parque das Nações Marina on the north bank of the Tagus River, in a modern area of the city redeveloped after the 1998 EXPO.
Oriente Station is just a 10-minute walk from the marina and offers excellent connections to the historic center, but you won’t need to travel far to find all the stores and services you’ll need, as well as some of Lisbon’s most famous tourist attractions.
If you prefer to dock in a seaside resort, the best choices north of Lisbon are the Marina of Cascais along the Estoril coast and the marina of Oeiras , located about halfway between Lisbon and Cascais.
To the south of Lisbon, however, we recommend the marina of Sesimbra , two kilometers from the city center. It is an ideal base for those who, after many hours of sailing, want to stretch their legs with fascinating excursions in the green Arrábida Natural Park; those who prefer to continue exploring by sea will be able to go in search of small coves and deserted beaches.
The marina of Sines is a convenient stop for those who then want to continue towards the Algarve.
Other marinas in the district of Lisbon and surroundings are:
- Doca das Fontaínhas
- Marina of Troia
Marinas in southern Portugal
Southern Portugal, and in particular the Algarve region, is another area rich in safe marinas and marinas with many services.
One of these is Vilamoura Marina , the oldest in Portugal, located in the central Algarve about 27 kilometers from Faro. Vilamoura is a very developed tourist resort founded in the seventies by a rich banker from Lisbon: in the surroundings of the marina there are many hotels, luxury villas, vacation homes, bars, restaurants, stores.
Other marinas of similar quality that you can find sailing along the Algarve coast from west to east are Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos.
Other marinas in southern Portugal are:
- Vila Nova de Milfontes
Marinas in the Portuguese islands
Those who want to go far beyond the coast of Portugal and reach the charming Portuguese islands in the Atlantic will not have any difficulty in finding a port where to dock, whether in the elegant island of Madeira or in the remote Azores islands.
We are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, so a good experience in navigation is required: but if you have the necessary skills, reaching the islands that were a port of call for the intrepid navigators of the Age of Discovery will be an unforgettable emotion.
The most exciting point of arrival is perhaps the Marina of Horta in the Azores (island of Faial), a colorful marina that has been embellished over time by paintings and drawings drawn by sailors arriving and departing.
Due to its location, it is a sort of obligatory stop for those crossing the Atlantic and this has made it become a sort of symbol for those who want to undertake challenging nautical enterprises.
In order to explore the beauty of this remote archipelago, you can stop at the marinas of Angra and Praia da Vitória on Terceira Island and at Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel Island.
In the Madeira archipelago, the best landing point is the lively port of Funchal , which welcomes boats of all sizes from all over the world.
Other marinas in the Madeira Islands and Azores:
- Marina do Lugar de Baixo (Ponta do Sol)
- Vila do Porto

Buy a boat in Portugal to sail when and where you please
With 943 km of coastline on the mainland and 917 km around Madeira and the Azores, Portugal offers sea enthusiasts plenty of sailing options.
Sailing around Porto: outings for experienced sailing enthusiasts
Buying a new or used boat in Porto gives you the opportunity to discover the Douro, of course, but it also means you can explore the west coast of the country. There are various marinas providing comfortable stopovers for coastal cruises with Matosinhos, Póvoa de Varzim or Ria d'Aveiro among others. Note to thrill seekers: there's a good reason most of the ports on the coast have been constructed inside rivers... it's because the place is known for its strong swells.
Lisbon, a capital halfway between Tagus and the ocean
Near Lisbon, the Tagus forms a genuine inland sea which lends itself perfectly to yachting. The numerous marinas on the banks of the Tagus are the ideal starting point for walks to the estuary and the historic town of Cascais. So why not buy a boat in Lisbon to explore the country's coast for a few days?
Sail the Algarve on translucent waters
Buying a boat in the Algarve enables you to enjoy idyllic sailing on all types of boats. With its cliffs, white sand beaches, nature reserves and historic towns, the Atlantic coast here takes on the air of the Mediterranean, to the delight of yachting enthusiasts. Between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, the south of Portugal is a perfect destination for walks, coastal cruises and enjoying water sports.
The archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores: the gateway to the Atlantic
Buying a boat in Madeira or the Azores gives you direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. These particularly unspoilt archipelagos are appreciated for their wild side and the mildness of their climate throughout the year. Sailing from island to island, by sailboat or motor boat, is a pleasure accessible to all. The islands of Madeira or the Azores are also a great starting point for crossing to the Antilles!
Freshwater sailing in Portugal along the Douro
Buying a river cruiser in Portugal or a small cabin boat gives you the opportunity to embark on some great river cruises. The most notable option is certainly the Douro: from Barca d'Alva to Porto, you've got 210 km of sheer panoramas, history and vineyards in an endless vista as you journey through five locks. The Arade in the Algarve, or the Tagus around Lisbon also offer peaceful navigation options with plenty to discover along the way. Buying a boat in Portugal: a safe bet for sailing all year round! Along the rivers or on the quiet Algarve coast, it is an ideal country for yachting.

Renting a yacht in portugal - portugal boating vacation, a warm scene in the north atlantic.
Portugal shares its northern and eastern frontiers of the Iberian Peninsula with Spain, while having over 1,000 kilometers of coastline in the west and south. With a long coastline, Portugal produced great sailors like Vasco de Gama, Pedro Álvares Cabral, and Afonso de Albuquerque. These men helped construct a spirit of sailing and adventure in Portugal that still holds true today. It is very easy to experience this sense of spirit and passion while on your own yacht charter in Portugal.
Whether you charter a sailboat, catamaran, motorboat, or houseboat in Portugal, you will have easy access to the Atlantic Ocean as well as other countries. Portugal provides the perfect location for a sailor searching for a boating holiday. Portugal is a fairly small country, but the different yacht charter routes you can experience are numerous, as well as visiting other countries like Morocco and Spain. Though Portugal is in the far west of continental Europe, you still have quick and easy access to terrific coastlines of other countries.
Fun Activities While Anchored
Prior to sailing the open waters that surround Portugal, be sure to drop anchor near Lagos and view the fascinating coastline. Ponta da Piedade is a must visit because of the beautiful section of coastline that is like no other place on Earth. It is the perfect place to swim in the hidden coves and grottos while jumping off perfectly sculpted cliffs that are thousands of years old. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars when you visit Ria Formosa in order to witness the hundreds of different migrating birds that use these barrier islands as a temporary home in the spring and autumn months.
From the safety of your yacht charter, experience the Boca do Inferno or “The Mouth of Hell,” where you can observe unbelievable thundering waves crashing against the rocky coastline. You are more than welcome to moor and casually stroll the coastline that provides infinite scenic views. However, if you are looking for more of a city feel, travel to the former fishing village of Cascais and sample the local cuisine.
After you experienced enough of the southern Portuguese culture, navigate around the southern tip of Sagres, and head north to Belém, just west of Portugal’s capital Lisbon. Visiting the Belém Tower, a 16th century fortified lighthouse that was built to defend the port, is a must while chartering a yacht in this area of central Portugal. Famous Portuguese sailors, like Vasco de Gama, sailed by this same light house before embarking on their daring sea-expeditions.
Continue your yachting vacation to Lisbon and stop in Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon. Unlike most of the city, this district survived the earthquake of 1775 and still offers astonishing views from several observation points. Be sure to have a map of this district because it is very easy to get lost walking the cobbled streets while observing the Lisbon Cathedral, the Museum of Decorative Arts, historic architecture and the local bars.
Many people think the Caribbean has the best diving in the Atlantic Ocean, but Portugal provides diving that is just as spectacular. The long Atlantic coastline provides excellent diving in Faro, Lagos, Sines, and Aveiro, where extraordinary marine life inhabit reefs and caves. Diving in Portugal’s warm waters is possible year round with water visibility typically ranging from 3-15 meters but can be as far as 30 meters. Portugal offers exciting and unique experiences that cannot be replicated by any country on Earth.
Portugal: Sailing Itineraries and Route Suggestions
The greatest advantage to hiring a yacht charter in Portugal is the freedom you have to go to the most exclusive and stunning locations Portugal has to offer. This advantage makes Portugal a huge destination for a boating vacation. You can easily venture off the beaten path to remote locations that provide immaculate views and wildlife. Also, you have the opportunity to experience cities like Lisbon and Porto, or small sleepy fishing villages; wherever you wish to navigate your yacht charter.
Depending on the length of your boating vacation, Portugal has countless sailing opportunities for all sailing expertise levels. Navigating north to south or south to north, will allow you to experience the Portuguese culture to the fullest. Find a route suggestion here for sailing Portugal’s Silver Coast. If you are more interested in experiencing Portugal’s southern coast, we provide a route suggestion for sailing in the Algarve region. Portugal provides abundant ports that make for perfect day trips, allowing you to experience different parts of the country you wish to see.
Climate and Sailing Conditions for Portugal
Portugal’s location in Western Europe gives the country a warm, temperate, Mediterranean climate with a wet season in the winter. During the winter months, the average daytime high temperature is 61°F (16°C) and in the spring months, temperatures gradually rise and reach around 72°F (22°C). In southern Portugal, the summer months last from May to October and the weather is warm with very little rain. Relax on your catamaran, motor yacht, sailboat or houseboat in 85°F (29°C) temperatures in July and August, while a refreshing breeze softly blows. The sun shines for 12 hours per day, allowing plenty of time for outdoor activities like swimming and diving. Because of the shifting current, the best time to swim and dive in Portuguese waters is in July or August when the average water temperature is 70°F (21°C)
The pristine sailing conditions of the west coast are attracting an increasing number of international sailors. Over 300 days out of the year, the Nortada (Portuguese Trade Winds) blow at between 12 and 18 knots which makes Portugal an ideal boating destination. Refreshing breezes, 12 hours of sunshine, comfortable temperatures and warm water, July and August are definitely the best months to charter a yacht in Portugal. Chartering a catamaran, sailboat, houseboat or motor yacht, it is recommended you sail from south to north because of the trade winds and the southern current that flows during the summer.
Boating Licenses for Portugal
In order to rent a yacht in Portugal, you must abide to certain sailing and boating regulations. Licenses are issued by the Portuguese Maritime Institute but any sailing licenses issued by another European Union country are automatically valid. Non-EU licenses are accepted and recognized in Portugal if the requisites meet EU standards. They usually have to be translated into Portuguese or English. Should you go on a Douro River or Douro Valley tour?
What’s the difference between a Douro River and a Douro Valley ? It mainly comes down to location and duration.
A Douro River tour is focused around Porto, typically lasting 2-3 hours. This tour, primarily by boat, lets you see the city’s landscapes and historic sites but doesn’t include the Douro Valley.
On the other hand, a Douro Valley tour is a full-day experience, usually 8 to 9 hours long. This tour takes you into the Douro Valley, known for its winemaking. It often features a visit to a vineyard where you can participate in wine tasting and enjoy a lunch with local flavors set against the backdrop of the valley’s vineyards.
So the difference? While the river tour offers a quick overview of Porto, the valley tour provides a deeper exploration of the region’s wine culture. Keep that in mind as you scan the best Porto boat tours that are listed below.

You’ll glide past famous landmarks like the Dom Luís I Bridge , the picturesque Ribeira district , and the historic Vila Nova de Gaia , known for its port wine cellars.
Additionally, there are various types of cruises available, ranging from short trips to extended excursions, some even including meals and wine-tasting sessions. This variety ensures that there’s a cruise to suit everyone’s interests, whether you’re looking for a quick sightseeing tour or a leisurely exploration with local flavors and wines.
How long is the river cruise in Porto?
River cruises in Porto range from short two-hour cruises all the way up to full daylong trips which take you all the way up into the Douro Valley.
The river itself is nearly 900 km, over 500 miles, so you could spend days slowly traveling all the way up its entirety.
Is the 6 Bridges cruise worth it in Porto?
Yes — Porto Six Bridges boat tours are totally worth it. The bridges spanning the Douro River are all architecturally unique and interesting, and cruising under them offers a fun perspective of their structures.

Where do the river boats leave from Porto?
The majority of Porto boat cruises leave from the Douro Marina. The marina is on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river just west of the Ponte da Arrabida.

But not every one of the best boat tour Porto has to offer departs from the marina. So make sure to double-check the departure location before leaving your accommodations.
What is the best time of year to cruise the Douro River?
There is no bad time to visit Porto or to cruise the Douro — it’s always a guaranteed stunning experience.

What do you wear on a Douro River cruise?

If your Portugal river cruise includes a Porto wine boat tour, you may be asked not to wear casual summer clothes such as flip-flops or tank tops. If you’re headed out on the speedboat tour, you can expect to get a bit wet, so you’ll want to wear lighter clothing that will dry quickly.
Any time of year, wearing plenty of sunscreen is important . If you’re going on Portuguese river cruises in the autumn or winter months or a sunset cruise Porto experience, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got some layers to stay warm.
What are the boats in Porto called?
