Pure Sail Azores

Igor Radyuk / Belarus

Really the best charter company!I rented Bavaria 41 Hera in June, 2017 for 2 weeks. And these guys are really profesionals! The boat was in perfect conditons with all nessesary equipment on board. By my expirience not every company make so many efforts to prepare the same conditions of charter boats. Check in and briefing before charter was very efficient with many good advices and additional information to make our trip amazing.I can say exactly, when I return to Azores I'll take a boat in Pure Sail!

Pure Sail Azores

Kurt Mahnert / Austria

Best equipped charter boat in my personal experienceTook over the boat in a perfectly clean and exceptionally well equipped condition. Easy but detailed takeover / checkin with all explanations. Boat almost new, and from tools to dishes, welcome package and beautiful sheets and covers on the bed everything was in best and brandnew condition. Many recommendations were given for marinas, harbours and bays, as well as about fishing and special destinations that should not be missed.Aside from the perfect boat and service of Pure Sail Yacht Charter, the Azores are really worth a visit: Perfect nature, friendly and helpful people, beautiful landscape and all far away from crowded and over-marketed areas. This is "real sailing", no crowded bays and no traffic on the ocean aside from tons of dolphins, some whales and even a turtle. All in all a perfect holiday, away from "usual pathes" with a touch of adventure in one of the most beautiful places if not the most beautiful area where I have sailed so far.

Pure Sail Azores

Ben H. / Spain

The best way to see the AzoresWe hired 'Urze' a beautiful 41ft for three days and two nights along with skipper/owner Duarte and had an absolute ball. The boat is almost brand new, well appointed and very comfortable, with three decent berths. It's also well equipped with a decent size saloon and was perfect for explorung the coast of Sao Miguel, including the famous crater island at Vila Franca. Duarte was an accommodating host, passionate about sailing and the Azores, and was especially good and patient with our youngest. He also turned out to be a pretty good chef! We were privileged to sail among at least three pods of dolphins. This is really a great way to see the Azores and its marine life and Pure Sail comes highy recommended.

The Archipelago of the Azores are located in the mid North Atlantic Ocean, within a range bounded by the parallels 36° 55' 43'' and 39° 43' 02'' N and the meridians 24° 46 ' 15'' and 31° 16' 02'' W. It is about 1430 km from the European continent and more than 3900 km east of North American mainland. The islands form the Autonomous Region of the Azores, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal. The archipelago consists of nine islands gathered into three distinct groups: the Western Group, the Central Group and the Eastern Group. The two main yacht charter areas of the Azores are either the central island group including the islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Terceira and Graciosa or the eastern islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria. The Azores are a great cruising ground with everything from steep rising majestic volcanos to sleepy little fishing villages. We have yachts based in the lovely marinas of Horta on Faial island, Lajes on Pico island and Vila Franca on Sao Miguel.

is located at 38° 36' N and 28° 30' W and is just 21 km long and 14 km wide. The island is 4.5 miles from Pico and 14 miles from Sao Jorge. On the SW coast Faial lies the town of Horta, the main port of the Azores archipelago. And here you will find our charter boats in Horta Marina, renowned amongst transatlantic sailors and blue water cruisers at the mandatory stop over when making the west-east Atlantic crossing from the Americas to Europe. The paintings that cover the walls and ground of the marina are made by the crew of boats conscious of the legend says that sailors who do not draw a painting will not reach their destination. Horta Marina has 300 berths and is within walking distance of the town making shopping, sightseeing and provisioning very easy and convenient. Horta is a pleasant town to explore with many old shops, cafes and good restaurants. Check out Pete's Bar, popular with sailors and locals alike.
Major attractions ashore and inland include; The Caldeira and Capelinhos Volcanos and the Horta Regional Museum

is located at 38° 30' N 28° 20' W, just 11 miles south of Sao Jorge and just 4.5 miles east of Faial. It is 46 km long with a maximum width of 16 km. The island is well known for its visually dramatic volcano, Ponta do Pico (2351m altitude) which is not only the highest point of the entire Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but is also the tallest mountain in all of Portugal and the Azores. Pico is often called Ilha Preta (Black Island) by locals, thanks to its black volcanic soil. Pico Island boasts historical vineyards that played a large part in the historic development of the area and these are now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Major attractions ashore include;- The Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, Torres Cavern, Capitao and Caiado Lagoons and the Whalemen's and Whaling Industry Museums

is located at 38° 24' N 28° 33' W, 11 miles north of Pico, 22 miles south of Graciosa, 14 miles east of Faial and 32 miles west of Terceira. It is 56 km long and just 8 km wide. The island is distinguished by its long narrow shape and by the presence of numerous coves which have been formed over thousands of years by the falling slopes. The coves now contain many small, quaint coastal villages. Velas Marina, on the SW coast provides 77 berths in the protected natural harbour and offers a spectacular view of the cliffs. The town of Velas is within walking distance from the marina making shopping, sightseeing and provisioning easy and convenient.
Major inland attractions include; Caldeira de Santo Cristo Faja, the peaks of Morgadias, Esperança, Areeiro and Calheta. Ponta dos Rosais and the Ethnographic Museum.

is located in the north of the Central Group, about 20 miles northeast of Sao Jorge and 32 miles northwest of Terceira. The island is the least mountainous of the Azores, reaching a maximum altitude of 402m. Graciosa's landscape is very beautiful, combining green pastures with white isolated houses and villages. It's fertile fields produce vegetables, fruit, wine and cattle.

is the most populated island of the Central Group in the Azores archipelago with a population in excess of 50,000 inhabitants. It is the most eastern island in the group located 90 miles from Sao Miguel and 66 miles from Faial. The city of Angra do Heroismo, the main urban center of the island was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO because of the beauty of its Renaissance houses, churches and monasteries. These are characterized by vivid colors.

is the largest island in the Azores archipelago with an area of over 7.5 thousand square kilometers and a population of approximately 140,000 inhabitants. The bustling port of Ponta Delgada welcomes sailors and fellow holiday makers alike. Nicknamed “the green island,” because of its extensive vegetation and abundance of cultivated fields, it is visually stunning so try to spare a little time to explore inland.
Other inland attractions include; the Sete Cidades and Fogo Lagoons.

, the other island in the Eastern Group, was the first of the Azores islands to be discovered by the Portuguese navigator Diogo de Silves, circa 1427. In February 1493 Christopher Columbus stopped on the island returning from his first trip to America.

Yacht charter Azores

Azores-Horta-harbour-Pico-yacht-charters-Horta.jpg

The nine main islands of the Azores are divided into three groups: the "Grupo Ocidental" in the northwest with Flores and Corvo, the "Grupo Oriental" in the Southeast and the "Grupo Central". In the southeast, there are the biggest and main island Sao Miguel with the capital Ponta Delgada, the island Santa Maria, and the uninhabited archipelago of Formigas. The central group, which is particularly interesting for sailors, consists of the island of Faial, with the well known capital of Horta, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira. Between Corvo in the northwest and Santa Maria in the southeast of the archipelago, the distance is about 340 nautical miles. Approximately 20 per cent of about 250.000 inhabitants live in the capital, Ponta Delgada.

The Azores have been colonized by the Portuguese in the middle of the 15th Century. While previously farming with the cultivation of sugar cane, oranges and pineapples, tobacco and tea was the main source of income, later the inhabitants reinforced trade and whaling – now they live on livestock, tourism and especially eco-tourism gets more and more important. Tourists can also watch more than thirty species of whales and dolphins.

Due to the Gulf Stream, there is a relatively mild climate year-round in the Azores: with an average of 13 degrees Celsius in winter and 23 degrees in the summer, and water temperatures ranging from 18 to 24 degrees. Lush vegetation alternates with more bare volcanic formations – earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the Azores are not uncommon even in recent history.

Yacht Charter Azores crews reach the Azores via the international airport of Ponte Delgada Joao Paulo II (PDL) and the regional airports on the other 8 islands, all of which are also connected by with ferries.

For bareboat charter in the Azores, there are based some yachts only since 2011. Sailors can charter yachts on three islands of the "Grupo Central" at the charter bases in the marina of Horta on Faial Island , in Velas on Sao Jorge and in Marina in Lajes do Pico .

Chartering the Azores

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: March 15, 2017

Sail Azores

Cardoza. Silvia. DaCosta. Dutra. Mello. Borges. Growing up in Middletown, Rhode Island, back in the day, those were just a few of the names of kids I went to school with who shared a common ancestry: Their dads — and in many cases, their dads’ dads — were fishermen. Farmers. Landscapers. Boatbuilders. Mill workers. Masons. Family men. They’d come to America seeking the vast opportunities it presented, and they epitomized the title of that great old Rolling Stones tune, “Salt of the Earth.”

Dashing through their kitchens, on the way from one baseball or basketball game to another, the stories around the table of the “old country” were all about the Azores, their homeland, an archipelago of nine rugged islands in the middle of the Atlantic where it was said that if you jammed a stick into the ground, it would grow into a towering tree, so fertile and lush was the land. That was the sort of observation that would send my buddies’ eyes rolling skyward, but it sounded pretty magical to me, and even as a landlocked teenager, I always wanted to go there, to see for myself. Then, when I grew older and became an ocean sailor, the itch to visit became stronger still for a whole new set of reasons.

Over the years, of course, literally tens of thousands of intrepid voyagers have made landfall in the Azores, along with Bermuda, one of the true crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean. Perhaps the first Yankee yachtsman to call there — all by himself, naturally — was Capt. Joshua Slocum, who watched the islands rise from the mist after an 18-day voyage from Cape Sable, Nova Scotia, in summer 1895. If some of my friends’ parents had originally piqued my interest in the place, it was Slocum who turned my hazy curiosity into a bona-fide obsession.

“Early on the morning of July 20, I saw Pico looming above the clouds on the starboard bow,” wrote Slocum in his classic tome, Sailing Alone Around the World . “Lower lands burst forth as the sun burned away the morning fog, and island after island came into view. As I approached nearer, cultivated fields appeared, ‘and oh, how green the corn!’ Only those who have seen the Azores from the deck of a vessel realize the beauty of the midocean picture…

“It was the season for fruit when I arrived at the Azores,” he continued, “and there was soon more of all kinds of it put on board than I knew what to do with. Islanders are always the kindest people in the world, and I met none anywhere kinder than the good hearts of this place.”

After reading those passages, and speaking with other sailors who’d arrived in the Azores after a bluewater trip across the Atlantic, I reckoned and hoped that someday I would do the same. As it turned out, though, my very first glimpse of the isles came through the window of a puddle-jumping airplane inbound from Lisbon, the Azores being one of Portugal’s autonomous regions. And soon after, when we hoisted sail to wander in Slocum’s wake, it wasn’t aboard my own yacht on which we set forth. Nope, our party of four — including my longtime Newport sailing pals, Joy and Ian Scott, and my good ol’ Aussie mate, Carole — would be taking in the islands on a bareboat charter from a company called Sail Azores on their spiffy Dufour 460 Grand Large, Primo . Slocum probably would have been appalled.

Just for the record, Slocum’s Spray may well have had an easier time getting to the Azores than we did. First off, our overnight flight from Boston to Lisbon was delayed several times before being canceled altogether, which necessitated an overnight stay in an airport hotel. Then, on day two, another long delay in Beantown caused us to miss connections once in Portugal, which meant a second night in a hotel when we should’ve been aboard Primo and underway. By that time, we’d met several islanders in various airport lounges who assured us such travel nightmares to the Azores never happen (then again, they’d never flown with me, no stranger to such shenanigans). But as we soon learned, from a wind and weather standpoint, that missed day of what happened to be clear skies and favorable breeze threw a wrench in our itinerary from which we never truly recovered. In other words, we didn’t get to see everything we’d hoped to. That’s the downside of an ambitious weeklong charter.

Azores

On a much more positive note, from the moment we finally landed in Horta, on the island of Faial, we were bathed in the same sort of warmth and hospitality that had struck Slocum all those years ago, and which became a recurring theme of our entire trip. The Azoreans we met were inviting, wise and friendly folks, but most of all, they were extremely proud of the natural beauty and heritage of the unique island chain they call home, and were more than eager to show it all off.

We were greeted at the airport by the affable Nicolau Faria, who founded Sail Azores several years ago. Before that, a coastal cruise of the Azores was a strenuous affair, for there are few spots to anchor in the deep, rocky waters adjacent to the steep, volcanic islands, which is why most transiting bluewater sailors confined their brief visits to the protected harbor of Horta before proceeding on their merry ways. More recently, however, a series of modern marinas, nestled behind new breakwaters and complete with clean, excellent shoreside facilities and even free Wi-Fi, have been erected on most of the islands. Harbor-hopping between them — and taking some time ashore to enjoy their many attractions — is now relatively simple and straightforward for voyagers and charterers alike.

Once aboard Primo , we settled into the chart briefing with Anabela Costa and Filipe Goulart of the Sail Azores team. As she spread out the charts before us, Anabela said, “The best we have to offer is nature,” and began to point out some of the must-see destinations on our route.

As the islands span nearly 400 miles of blue Atlantic from west to east, it would be nearly impossible to visit them all in even a fortnight, particularly since the weather is nothing if not changeable. (That said, Sail Azores also offers two-week charters for extremely motivated and experienced sailors who don’t mind overnight passages with suggested itineraries that cover most of the isles.) So Anabela advised a tour of the group’s central islands: São Jorge, Pico, Terceira and Faial. Since we were down to five days after our airline escapades, even this seemed like a fairly bold plan, but we were anxious to give it a go.

It was too late in the day to shove off, so we wandered along the waterfront and took in the dozens of colorful paintings on the seawalls created by long-distance sailors passing through, an open-air gallery of sorts and a tradition among voyagers for which Horta is famous. Afterward, we wandered up the hill to the bright, fully stocked supermarket where we loaded up on local wine, beer, fruit, bread, meats, cheeses and other delicacies. Finally, after catching a cab back to town with our goodies, we enjoyed a terrific seafood dinner at the Genuíno Restaurant, named after its proprietor, Genuíno Madruga, Portugal’s first and only solo circumnavigator, a local celebrity who greeted us at the door like long-lost mates. Everyone told us we had to try the local lapas , or limpets, delicate clams on the half-shell broiled in garlic and butter; so we did, and they were delicious. So too was the fresh pargo , or sea bream, that followed. Wandering back to the boat, we were astounded by how affordable everything was. Two full carts of groceries had come to roughly 70 euros, or about $75 USD, which was nearly identical to our restaurant tab for dinner for four, complete with flowing wine and several beers.

I was up early the next morning for a long swim off the deserted beach on the outskirts of town, reportedly one of the few true beaches in the islands and the only one we’d see on our travels. The water, in the low 70s, was delightful, precisely the same temperature as back home in Newport on this late-September day. With that, there was nothing left to do but go sailing.

Your nautical partner in azores.

SAILAZORES YACHT CHARTER (as SAILAZORES – ACTIVIDADES NÁUTICAS, Lda.), was created in September 2010 pursuing a family dream to show the Azores to the world through its most privileged vehicle: a sailboat. Amidst the passion for the sea, the Azores and sailboats, the Sailazores Project was born. Islandhopping quickly became our motto. And there are few places in the world where this concept makes so much sense. In the Azores we have 9 islands of lush beauty and unspoiled natural condition. All different among themselves. And the ocean that surrounds us gives sailing enthusiasts the true sense of " real sailing ”. From the passion that motivates us, we are assisted by a true willingness to respond professionally to all our challenges. We look forward and seek in every day the excellence of service and the transparency of relationship, whose sole objective is the complete satisfaction of every Customer, Partner and Friend. We truly value your opinion and it would be of high importance to us if you could share with us your thoughts and suggestions on everything that surrounds us. It will definitely help us improve our global level of care and service. All our yachts are fully-owned at pristine maintenance condition!

Sincerely yours,

azores bareboat yacht charter

Yacht Charter Greece – The Aegean Yachting offers a wide range of sailing yachts, motor yachts, and catamarans in some of the most beautiful destinations in Greece .  A brand of Nikolas Yachting Ltd. , Aegean Yachting provides affordable yacht charters in Greece and the Greek islands . You can explore the Greek islands with a sailing or motor yacht, bare-boat or with a skipper for the vacation of a lifetime. The Greek peninsula is at the far south east of Europe is made up of the mainland (Attica, Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace) and the islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The area has a population of about 10 million.

Athens , the capital and largest city of Greece: The name of Greece’s capital derives from the name of the Goddess of wisdom and intelligence, Athena. This unique city is where democracy first saw the light of day, and where the Parthenon, the gem of architecture, was built.

Yacht charter bases in Greece – Greek islands:

Greece has an extremely large number of islands – 6,000-odd islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which only 227 islands are inhabited. Most of the islands are found in the Aegean Sea and are divided into many groups:

Sporades Islands: Pine-clad, picturesque, and hilly islands with some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches — Alonnisos , Skiathos , Skopelos , and Skyros .

Dodecanese Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Dodecanese, Greece ) – This group of islands has some of the most cosmopolitan and tranquil of the Greek Islands – 15 larger and about 150 smaller Greek islands — Astypalaia , Agathonisi , Alimia, Arkoi, Chalki, Farmakonisi, Gyali, Kalymnos , Karpathos , Kasos , Kastellorizo , Kinaros, Kos , Lipsi , Leipsoi, Leros , Levitha, Marathos, Nisyros , Nimos , Patmos , Pserimos , Rhodes , Symi , Saria, Strongyli, Syrna, Telendos , and Tilos .

Cyclades Islands  (Yacht Charter in Cyclades, Greece), situated in the heart of Aegean Sea, Cyclades is one of the most popular yacht charter destination in Greece.

This group of islands is made up of 56 islands of various sizes, with the most important being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, Folegandros, as well as the “Minor Cyclades” comprising Donousa, Irakleia, Koufonisia and Schinousa.

Saronic Islands  also known as  Gulf of Aegina   (Yacht Charter in Saronic Gulf, Greece), easily accessible from Athens or Poros, excellent for bareboat yacht charters or flotillas alike.

This area is also ideal for beginners with steady predictable afternoon breezes – the islands of Aegina/Aegena, Salamina/Salamis, Poros, Patroklos, Fleves, Angistri,  Methana, Spetses, and Hydra.

Ionian Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Ionian, Greece )  – The Ionian Sea is an ideal yacht charter destination and somewhat more peaceful than the Aegean.

The lush green beauty of the Ionian Islands offer gentle sailing from bases in Corfu and Lefkas makes this a family friendly yacht charter area in Greece – lying just off the West coast of Greece, Ionian islands resemble a necklace, and include Paxos and Antipaxos, Corfu, Levkas, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakinthos.

Evia  (Yacht Charter in Evia, Greece) – The prefecture of Evia (which also includes the island of Skiros), is next to the prefecture of Viotia on the east and on the south touches the Aegean Sea, on the north and northwest to the Pagasitiko and Maliako Gulf, while on the west and southwest with the north and south Evian Gulf.

The Northeastern Aegean Islands  (Yacht Charter in Northeastern Aegean, Greece)  – Agios Efstratios, Thasos, Ikaria, Lesbos, Limnos, Inouses, Samos, Samothrace, Chios, Psara.

Crete    – an authentic Greek Island with a metropolitan twist: Yacht charter in Crete is a wonderful experience, offering the ultimate escape. Located at the southernmost tip of Greece, Crete is the largest island of Greece and divided in to 4 prefectures.

From west to east: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi.
