First slide

"First time trying EGG yachting in Gocek. We met with Ibrahim some time ago in a boat exhibition and he’s friendly honest approach made us give EGG yachting a go. Althouth there was a slight confusion with our rental dates we came to a mutual agreement and Surprisingly this was one of a kind and the service provided by both Mr Ibrahim and his team was exceptional. We were provided with a great sailboat. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in renting a sailboat to go through EGG yatching. Turkeys sail holiday is one of a kind. Not known by most European skippers. If you’re up for an unforgettable sail experience try Gocek out and make sure you speak to Ibrahim as EGG yachting is extreamly luck to have such a team member. Go sail turkey - go E.G.G Yachting…."

"The boat charter with E.G.G.Yachting in Göcek was an extraordinary experience. Base manager Ibrahim and his team carried out the check in and check out very calmly and personably. The boat was very clean and in very good technical condition. We loved our yacht Palomem, a Bavaria 46 cruiser. Göcek Marina is an ideal starting point for a trip in the Golf of Fethye. We can highly recomment Ibrahim and his team from E.G.G. Yachting, thank you very much for everything."

logo

"We chartered a yacht for 2 weeks. The yacht was very well prepared. The E.G.G crew was very helpful and friendly. Basic things like the engine, sails, etc. were perfect. Additionally, the yacht had an exceptionally well-equipped kitchen with an additional refrigerator. There were steel life lines installed on the yacht, there were a lot of small ropes which are usually very necessary. There were a lot of extra things that were usually extremely helpful. E.G.G. organized a transfer from Antala at a very good price. I highly recommend them and hope to see next year."

logo

"EGG provided us with a great sailing experience The staff were very efficient and friendly. Attentive to meeting our needs they were always on hand if there was any teething difficulties and nothing was too much trouble. A very well led and managed team"

logo

"We’ve chartered our yacht there this summer and were super happy with everything. İbrahim made sure that everything works properly, he gave us all the instructions and also made sure we understood them correctly. The whole process was very smooth and the whole team was very attentive whenever we had a question. So far the best experience we’ve had in Europe."

Sailing from Gocek

Nestled in the heart of Gocek Bay, the bohemian town of Gocek is a fantastic place to start a sailing holiday – it has perfect sailing weather (sunshine, dependable winds), plenty of pristine coastline (and turquoise seas), and a plethora of exciting places to sail to and explore. The whole surrounding Gocek Bay area is a collection of islands and secluded bays, each seemingly with their own cute top-notch restaurant and jetty.

You could get away with just sailing in the sheltered Gocek Bay area, but if you want to get some stronger wind in your sails and nautical miles on your logbook then you can head north to Ekincik to see Turtle beach, the Dalyan mud-baths, or the Ancient city of Kaunos, or south past historic Fethiye and the famous Blue Lagoon to visit the epic sunken city of Kekova. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Göcek

Gocek is a fantastic place to sail and offers a different sailing experience to Greece and Croatia – there aren’t many massive marinas, so you’ll find yourself in remote anchorages or on a restaurant jetty in a secluded bay each night. Often there is no charge for the mooring fees as long as you eat in the restaurant in the evening, and some places will even throw in breakfast for free!

Gocek - 6 day Sailing itinerary

It’s six days (not seven) because you normally only get on board at 4pm on Saturday, and are required to be back at the marina on Friday evening (before checking-out on Saturday morning – which, assuming that you buy food and pack provisions on the first Saturday, and set off on your voyage first thing on Sunday morning, means six days of wonderful sailing.

Gobun

We’re darting around the Gocek Bay area – what a delightful place to sail – you’ll likely be tacking and beating up the prevailing summer winds as we make our way to the best place in the area: Gobun bay, which is better known to the locals as Kapi Creek. If you arrive in the afternoon, you’ll find olive groves to meander around, you could be tempted in to take a dip or, if you’re keen to explore, you can summit the nearby hillside (it takes about an hour) to get stunning views across the bay area.

After the sun sets, the local restaurant (which you can only reach by boat) will sort you out with a fine meal, and you’ll be able to find fellow-sailors to compare plans or swap your best sailing adventures with. Or just sit and get to know your crew. This is the life!

Ekincik

Ekincik itself is a pretty ex-fishing village with a brilliant beach, and it’s another tranquil and beautiful place to spend the night, but the main reason we’re here is so that you can get yourself set up for tomorrow – there are full and half-day boat trips which leave from Ekincik and head to take in the remarkable (and highly recommended) ruins of ancient Kaunos, the thermal mud baths at Dalyan (which they say take ten years off the age you look), or the natural wilderness of Iztuzu Beach – better known as Turtle beach, and the home of over 300 nesting couples of sea-turtles during breeding season.

Speak to one of the locals about arranging a tour and you can set off on one of their traditional riverboats tomorrow morning (you’re not allowed to sail to Dalyan in your own boat as you need a special permit).

Ekincik

Asi Koyu is a bit of a hidden gem – though you suspect that it’s one of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches or bays in Turkey precisely because it is so far off the beaten track for land-lubbing tourists (there’s no main roads that head here, so getting here without your own boat is not easy).

There’s a beach bar, but it’s a romantic place to just sit on deck and relax under the stars. If you haven’t yet sampled Turkish wine yet, then here is as good a place as any to give it a try: wine was invented in Turkey, and they’ve been making it for over 6,000 years, so they know a thing or two about it!

Tersane Adasi

Nowadays, it’s an oasis of peace and calm, but Tersane Adasi (and the Gocek Bay area) was once the headquarters of the Ottaman Navy! ‘Tersane’ literally means ‘dockyard’ in Turkish, and this island is where they built all their finest ships. You can still spot hidden signs of this ancient former life, particularly if you’re able to snorkel.

Interestingly, the history of Tersane island goes back further still – it is regularly name-checked in Ancient Greek literature (when it was called ‘Telandros’) and it is believed to be the final resting place of the heroic Glaucos, who fought in the battle of Troy!

Cold Water Bay

To get there, we’re heading out south past the Fethiye headland, and you’ll find the destination tucked just around the other side. If you have time, you should sail a little further south to check out the famous Blue Lagoon – an stunning lagoon which you have to see to believe (Google it).

If you’re feeling energetic, then there’s the curious ghost town of Kayakoy located a short walk above Cold Water Bay: the largely Greek population that lived here were forced out of their homes as part of a Greek-Turkish people swap in 1923. None of the Turkish people who arrived in exchange wanted to live in Kayakoy, so consequently the whole village of 500+ buildings was abandoned, and is now a creepy tourist attraction.

Gocek

From Cold Water Bay, we’re sailing back towards the Gocek Bay area - so you can maybe check out another couple of idyllic places you liked over there, go exploring for places to stay over at next year, or go in search of the ultimate background to a team photograph – before sailing onwards to Gocek, and all it’s pretty sea-side restaurants. Moor up the boat pretty much where you found her, and then it’s time to high-five the crew for (another) job well done!

If you haven’t yet been out to Gocek yet then it is totally worth a stroll – there are lots of restaurants and bars along the long waterside promenade and there is a jovial holiday atmosphere – particularly with all the sailors back in town at the end of a great week of sailing.

Hopefully you’ve also had a great week of sailing, and you’re leaving here with a multitude of happy memories, a sun tan, and better friends than you arrived here with. Many people who sail in Turkey once end up sailing here year on year, so maybe we’ll see you again next summer? Otherwise, check out PlainSailing.com for more inspiration of places to sail. Have a safe trip home, and hopefully see you online soon :)

Sailing Conditions

Turkey Sailing - Wind Conditions

The prevailing winds are generally consistent, force 3 to 4 – which is absolutely perfect for sailing. You’ll find occasional weather systems arrive from elsewhere, particularly in spring or autumn, so it is worth checking the forecast before you set sail.

And in winter, then winds can arrive from any direction and you might face icy cold Siberian winds from the north, or warm equatorial tropical storms from the south.

Wind strengths and speeds also vary during the year, but tend to be between force 3 to 5 during summer – which is ideal sailing conditions – or stronger if you head out to the Dodecanese island. Winds are slightly stronger in winter.

Marmaris - Average Temperature

Göcek is now the biggest yacht charter hub in Turkey, and simultaneous developments of brand new marinas means that there are six marinas in the area. The three main ones we use are the giant D-Marin Göcek at the south of the town, the swish Marinturk Göcek Village Port just to the North of the town, and the quieter Club Marina which is a little further around the coast, but which is connected to Gocek by a regular (and free) ferry-bus. All are modern developments with excellent facilities.

Charters are normally Saturday to Saturday, so you might need to stay a night or two on land before or after your charter. Göcek is a great place to while away the time, and the following hotels in Göcek village centre are highly recommended for being fantastic hotels, but reasonably priced: A&B Home Hotel or Villa Danlin Hotel .

Bareboat Yacht Charter

Along the turkish coast.

Bareboat yachting means that you charter a yacht independently. We hand over the yacht ready for use and you return the yacht to us at the end of your charter. As skipper you are fully responsible for the yacht and its crew. Of course you can always contact the base in Gocek by VHF or mobile phone in case of unexpected problems.

Flotilla Sailing Holiday

A flotilla consists of a group of yachts (generally around 5 boats) which all follow the same itinerary. During the day you sail independently but you can always refer back to the lead boat. We all depart from the same harbour or bay and meet again all together in the evening. Our head office is situated in the centre of Göcek town near the waterfront.

Sailing Courses

Budget Sailing Turkey is member of the Turkish Sailing Federation (TYF) and recognised by “World Sailing” (the former ISAF/International Sailing Federation). We offer practical courses for boat-and sail handling including all the basics you need to get familiarised with a standard sailing yacht. You can either do this on a one-to-one base or with your own group on the yacht type you chartered.

charter sailboat gocek

Budget Sailing Turkey offers well-maintained yachts for a real budget price directly from the owner. Budget Sailing Turkey is a small family run yacht charter company located in the pretty town of Gocek, only a half hour drive away from Dalaman International Airport. From here you directly sail into an unique and protected area full of bays, inlets, small islands and interesting historical sites. “Budget” was the initial concept of our company when we started with an older fleet of boats: the Aloa 27 SC and the Comet 1050. Both of these yacht types are significantly older than the other yachts we added to our fleet at a later stage and which belong to the more “modern” type of yachts such as Bavaria and Beneteau. But we never changed our initial concept: sailing for everyone’s budget! Our head office is situated in the centre of Göcek town near the waterfront. Our yachts are berthed in D-Marin Göcek marina, a relaxed and enjoyable marina, with all the facilities and services you need at the beginning and end of your charter holidays.

Budget Sailing Turkey is a trade mark of Karayel Yachting operating under the registration of The Republic of Turkey Ministery of Culture and Tourism, with yacht charter license No: 136

Göcek Yacht Charter

Gocek is one of the great places in Turkey to go sailing or crusing on a luxury yacht. It is is a well-known and beautiful yachting spot and is a favourite holiday destination for yacht charter enthusiasts. This bustling town is a favourite watering-hole of well-heeled tourists and celebrities. This charming yacht charter holiday resort is home to some 4,000 inhabitants and is known for its warm and friendly atmosphere.

Gocek is just a short 15-minute drive from the International Airport in Dalaman and can be accessed in one hour if you are coming from Istanbul. Gocek is an upscale yachting destination and the top choice if you want to explore and discover an elegant mix of impressive cultural treasures and enchanting natural settings.

A Yacht Charter Vacation Around Gocek

What is most notable about Gocek is its strict adherence to rigid development and construction regulations that are geared towards the protection of the city’s rich cultural heritage and tradition. Despite being a mainstream tourist centre in the region, the main attractions of this popular yacht charter holiday destination are its archaeological structures and historical landmarks, which is well-preserved and protected.

Gocek is originally a small farming village that transformed into an upscale holiday resort. The locals are still actively engaged in farming despite the heightened and fast-paced activities in the tourist centres. Local houses that are mostly located just a short distance from the resort’s famed promenade still have their verdant gardens where fresh vegetables are grown by the residents. The sidewalks along this section of the town is teeming with lemon, grapefruit, tangerine and orange trees, and this gives Gocek its unique panorama, a natural allure that is not usually present in other popular yacht charter destinations in Turkey.

The view at the waterfront is indicative of the popularity of Gocek in yacht charter circles. The entire bay and its 4 marinas are teeming with all kinds of boats, ranging from the ordinary dinghies to the impressive luxury yachts and superyachts.

Popular Places in Gocek Turkey

Just like in Fethiye and Marmaris, a typical holiday in the rustic town of Gocek is a journey to the storied past of Turkey. Yacht charter aficionados and regular tourists will have their hands full covering popular attractions and important destinations that feature archaeological structures and relics dating as far back as the Lycian civilization.

Gocek is not your usual sprawling tourist centre and majority of shops and boutiques and other important establishments and facilities are concentrated on a particular stretch of road that traverses the town. It is along this main street where you can find the 3 main supermarkets of Gocek as well as an array of clothes boutiques, gift shops and bazaars, outlets for sailing provisions. This is the main reason why most sailors go on a whistle-stop in this town for their yachting resupply.

Dining experience in Gocek is generally eclectic. Fine restaurants and other food venues serve a wide range of local dishes as well as international menus. Gocek is also home to an array of food outlets that specialize in Turkish cuisine, local pastry shops and the ubiquitous food shops that offer delectable pitas and kebabs.

Gocek Yacht Charter Enquiry

Hi Trina - I want to pass along our thanks for a lovely time on the Mare Nostrum. Not only is she a magnificent boat (new, well kept, lots of outdoor space, equal sized and lovely room with beautiful bathrooms) that is well equipped (jet ski, kayak, water ski), but the service and attention of Galip (the owner who was with us the entire trip!) and his team was truly EXCEPTIONAL!!! From meals that would be hard to find in the nicest restaurants to daily adventures experiencing the local flavors and personality, we could not have been happier. We have been all over the world with our family and we would have to say that our trip on the Mare Nostrum surely has been one of the best. Our hearty thanks! The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Yacht charter from fethiye & gocek.

If you are looking for a charter yacht in Turkey to enjoy a relaxing sailing holiday then look no further than the Gulf of Fethiye. Start your charter from Fethiye or Gocek, both easily reached from Dalaman airport, to have access to this tranquil sailing area with its calm winds, protected anchorages and short passages between islands and bays. Fethiye is a friendly harbour town with waterfront boulevard and pedestrianised town centre lined with tavernas and shops selling everything from carpets to spices. Göcek is a yachting centre but has lost none of its authentic Turkish charm.

To charter a yacht in Turkey is to appreciate the slower pace of life still lived by many in this part of the world and allows you to combine stunning anchorages, natural springs and mud baths with visits to ancient tombs and Lycian ruins. Names such as Four Fathom Bay, Ruin Bay, Wall Bay and Tomb Bay might sound like those found in a bestselling novel but actually these names hint to the centuries old history which remains evident today.

The Gulf of Fethiye is a yachtsman’s paradise with so many sheltered anchorages, coves and islands with crystal clear water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling and perhaps even catching a sight of turtles and dolphins! During your yacht charter in Turkey most evenings will be spent in a protected anchorage with just one or two restaurants ashore, giving you the chance to sample the delicious cuisine and warm hospitality of the locals before settling down to a peaceful night on anchor.

A bareboat sailing holiday in Turkey is great choice for those who already have a sailing license and are looking to plan their own itinerary to best suit their crew. For a sociable holiday with the assistance of a professional lead crew with fantastic knowledge of the local area, why not have a look at the Fethiye Flotilla . For a memorable holiday for a large group, perhaps a traditional gulet in Turkey could be the ideal option. These iconic boats can take up to 20 guests and provide a professional crew and meals onboard.

Yachts for Rent and Places to Visit in Gocek Region

Gocek Region and Marinas

Göcek is a great place for a Turkey holiday with its beautiful marinas and scenery. Known throughout the region for yacht tourism, Göcek's six marinas, beautiful bays and magnificent scenery make it a popular choice among yachtsmen and visitors alike. Göcek, known as "Kalimche" in the past, is located between Dalaman and Fethiye, only 20 minutes by car from the International Dalaman airport.

Göcek is located in a large bay where islands and bays create a very nice environment to spend time in and out of the water. It was declared a special protection area in 1988. As a result, there is a wide variety of accommodation options, although multi-storey buildings are not allowed which adds to the resort's luxurious feel.

The various bays and 12 Islands surrounding Göcek provide an unspoiled, seductive view to the Mediterranean Sea with clear waters, beautiful beaches and pine forests. There are many ways to enjoy the islands in Göcek marina, with trips organized by many operators.

The area offers opportunities to visit historical sites within a 60-minute drive, such as Fethiye Museum, Pınara, Tlos Letoon, Xanthos, Telmessos and Patara.

The most popular beach D-Resort belongs to Göcek (a beautiful Göcek hotel) and can be used for a daily fee. İnlice beach is a 10-minute drive away. It is possible to reach Göcek Island by sea taxi from its port. Sarigerme's long sandy beach, Iztuzu beach, Ölüdeniz beach which is probably the best in Turkey and many other beaches are easily accessible by car.

The town is well served by most of the marinas around the bay, with restaurants, cafes, boutiques and supermarkets lining the seaside.

Göcek, with its modern facilities and wonderful regions that you can explore right on your doorstep, is a stylish destination for your vacation.

Göcek is a small town located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the Mugla province. Situated at the mouth of Fethiye Bay, Göcek boasts a picturesque atmosphere, making it a popular destination for sailors. Its natural beauty is striking, with a lovely blend of lush forests, clear waters and sheltered bays, and the best way to see everything is by boat!

A Göcek yacht charter makes for an unforgettable sailing experience. You’ll have many places to moor, plenty of beaches for sunbathing and numerous coves and islands to explore. When you charter a yacht in Göcek you’ll have the freedom to discover several famous sailing routes, including the Gulfs of Fethiye, Hisaronu and Gokova.

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your perfect holiday in Göcek with Click&Boat!

What type of boat is best for Göcek?

If you’re considering renting a boat in Göcek for your next holiday, there are some things to consider when looking for the perfect vessel. It’s important to think about how much time you’ll be spending on board. If you’re planning a trip of less than a week, a daily charter such as a motorboat or a RIB is sufficient. However, if you want an extended sailing trip of a week or more, you’ll need a more spacious vessel with amenities on board to accommodate all of your needs. Catamarans and yachts are great options for a longer holiday.

If you want a traditional sailing experience, we’d recommend opting for a sailboat, however, they are notorious for swaying on the water so if you’re a novice sailor you should choose one with a skipper. For a cultural experience, gulet rentals are the best option since they are extremely popular in Turkey, and you’ll feel like a local while cruising on one!

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Göcek?

If you’re looking for a bareboat charter in or around Göcek, the cost will vary depending on a number of factors such as the time of year, the number of people on board the vessel and the size and type of vessel you choose. Below are some average prices of a Göcek boat rental without a skipper on board.

  • Sailboat : €5,750/week in the high season and €3,550/week in the low season for 8 people.
  • Motorboat : €1,428/day for 5 people.
  • RIB : All of our RIB charter in Göcek include a skipper on board. The average cost of a skippered RIB charter is €1,690/day for 12 people.
  • Catamaran : €7,350/week in the high season and €4,500/week in the low season for 10 people.
  • Gulet : All of our gulet charters in Göcek include a skipper on board. The average cost for a skippered gulet is €14,000/week in the high season and €1,000/week in the low season for 14 people.
  • Yacht : All of our yacht charters in Göcek include a skipper on board. The average price of a skippered yacht is €33,250/week in the high season and €21,000/week in the low season for 8 people.

When is the best time to go?

The best time for a Göcek boat rental is between April and November, when there are average highs of 22°C and little to no precipitation. Of course, the summer months are the high season in Göcek which means that the town will be more crowded with tourists. If you want to avoid crowds and get better deals on yacht charters in Göcek, we recommend visiting in May or October, when the weather is still warm enough for swimming.

Where to sail in Göcek?

There are so many things to do while on a yacht charter in Göcek, you could never be bored! Here are some of our favourite activities and places for exploring on your sailing holiday.

  • Visit nearby islands: There are several nearby islands that are popular among sailors and yachters, such as the 12 Islands, which are a group of small islands located just off the coast of Göcek. These islands offer secluded beaches, hidden coves and great snorkelling opportunities.
  • Tour the ancient city of Tlos: Tlos is an ancient city located just a short sail from Göcek. It was once an important city in the Lycian civilization, and it offers a glimpse into the region's rich history with its well-preserved ruins and monuments.
  • See the Oludeniz Beach: Also known as the "Blue Lagoon" Oludeniz Beach is often hailed as one of the best beaches in the country. Water sports enthusiasts can get their dose of adrenaline here since it is a popular place for swimming, paragliding and stand-up paddleboarding.
  • Go shopping and dining in Göcek: Göcek has a charming town centre with a variety of shops and restaurants. Visitors can find traditional Turkish souvenirs, jewellery, and textiles, as well as delicious local food like traditional seafood and meze.
  • Scuba dive: Göcek is full of fabulous places to dive. Also known as "Siren Hole", the Blue Cave is one of the most famous diving spots in Göcek. This sea cave is located just off the coast of the island of Kufre and offers clear waters painted in a unique blue hue that filters in through an opening in the cave's roof. If you want to see the remains of an old shipwreck, head to Sarsala, and if you want to get up close and personal with marine life, go to Cold Water Springs where you can see octopuses and sea turtles!

Göcek yacht charter with a skipper!

At Click&Boat, we want to make sailing accessible to everyone, so if you don’t have a sailing licence, not to worry! We’ve got plenty of Göcek yacht charters in our fleet which include a skipper on board. It’s true that skippered vessels tend to be more expensive than sailboats, however, the service is well worth the extra cost. Skippers will dock, anchor and sail the boat for you so that you can relax with ultimate peace of mind knowing that you are sailing in safe hands.

The best part about having a skipper on board is that they are usually locals of the area, so they can show you all of the best spots in Göcek, and help you see everything on your sailing itinerary. For a more personalised boat rental in Göcek, choose one with a skipper!

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

Related stories

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

One person dead and six missing after superyacht with 22 on board is sunk by tornado off coast of Italy

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those unaccounted for after the ship was battered by a tornado off the coast of Palermo in the early hours of Monday morning.

A man has died and six people are missing after a UK-flagged superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily in a tornado - with a prominent British businessman among those unaccounted for.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch owned the 56-metre vessel (183ft), named Bayesian.

Mr Lynch, known as the "British Bill Gates", has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, he was cleared of all charges by a US jury related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is among those missing after his yacht sank, local media reports.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is confirmed to be among the 15 people who were rescued after the British-flagged yacht capsized at around 4.30am local time (3.30am UK time) on Monday.

One body has also been recovered, after being found close to the vessel, according to local media.

The boat was hit by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, that struck where the yacht had been anchored during the storm.

Police divers have been trying to reach the hull of the ship, which is resting at a depth of 50 metres (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo.

During the rescue effort, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck, Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily, said.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he added.

The incident comes days after Stephen Chamberlain, Mr Lynch's co-accused in the fraud trial, died in a car collision in Stretham, Cambridgeshire.

Mr Chamberlain's lawyer said he was out running on Saturday when he was hit by a car.

Most on board yacht thought to be British

The boat had 12 passengers and a crew of 10 people. Four of the missing passengers are British and two are American, Italian news website la Reppublica reports.

Most of those on board were reported to be from Britain - including a mother and one-year-old daughter who are among those rescued.

Speaking to the Giornale Di Sicilia newspaper, Charlotte Golunski said: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.

"I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board."

Ms Golunski was reportedly given stitches for a chest injury following the ordeal. The father of the child also survived, Mr Cocina said.

Eight of the 15 people rescued and taken ashore at Porticello were taken to hospital, while the others were taken to a hotel.

The Italian coast guard said the boat had passengers from Britain, the US, and Canada.

Meanwhile, multiple Italian news outlets reported that people on the boat were from Britain, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

British-French citizens were also among those on the superyacht, according to reports.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

'I saw it sinking with my own eyes'

Pietro Asciutto, a fisherman from Porticello who witnessed the storm, told local media: "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big. I saw it suddenly sink."

He added: "I think the whirlwind came from Porticello... shortly afterwards I went down to Santa Nicolicchia Bay to get a better look at what was happening.

"The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

Fabio Cefalu, another local fisherman, called rescue services after spotting the wrecked boat off Porticello.

He said: "Around 3.55am we witnessed the whirlwind. After a quarter of an hour, we saw a flare 500 metres away from the dock.

"Around 4:35am we went out to sea for the rescue, however, we only saw the remains of the boat floating. There were no men in the sea. So we immediately called the harbour master's office."

Damaged caused by the storm

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide consular support to British nationals affected."

Camper and Nicholsons, which provided yacht management services for the Bayesian, has confirmed the vessel sank at around 4.30am local time.

The company said in a statement: "The Italian coast guard is leading search and rescue operations, and has safely recovered 15 individuals. Efforts to locate the seven missing persons continue.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

Online charter sites listed the Bayesian as available for rent for up to €195,000 (about £166,339) a week.
