IMX 40, High-Performance Racer/Cruiser

  • By Peter D’anjou

imx 40 x yachts

After we announced our 2002 Boat of the Year winners, we got a letter from a reader overseas suggesting that our judging panel must be biased because its all-American members failed to select the Danish-built IMX 40. We replied that the boat had been unavailable at the time, but that we were looking forward to an upcoming test. So, on a blustery spring day with a northwesterly blowing 15 to 25 knots, we took Udo Schroff’s IMX 40, Amadeus, for a workout on Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay.

This is the fourth Niels Jeppesen-designed X-Yacht we’ve sailed in the past few years. Based on those experiences and the design brief that called for an “IMS cruiser/racer,” we thought we had a handle on what to expect. We figured it would have the galvanized steel grid support glassed into all X-Yachts, which makes them strong and stiff–check. A fast hull form–check again. And a boat that leaned toward cruising–wrong! Instead, we found a boat designed and outfitted to race, right out of the box.

From the dock, the first thing we noticed was the IMX 40’s 4.5-foot freeboard. The bow is nearly plumb, the entry fine, and the knuckle sits just out of the water. The cabin top is low and unobtrusive, partly because of the high freeboard. The carbon spars are built by Nordic and painted white, and there’s discontinuous rod rigging and three swept-back spreaders on the runnerless fractional rig.

For the benefit of the hiking crew, there’s a nicely rounded hull-deck joint and the toe rails run no farther aft than the chainplates. The stern is open to the 66-inch carbon-fiber wheel, and a transom locker can be installed for cruising storage and seating, or left behind as a dock box when racing. The 40 comes with Spectra running rigging, hydraulic mast jack, and a choice of Frederiksen or Harken hardware, but the cruising stuff like the transom locker is extra.

An underdeck split-mainsheet system leads just forward of the wheel. There’s an ingenious and effective internal backstay system: a 4-to-1 cascade leads below deck to a 15-to-1 drum that provides 60-to-1 power with a single control line emerging on deck on a swivel cam in front of the wheel–a good position for the main trimmer to reach.

With a crew of five onboard we fired up the three-cylinder Volvo diesel to motor out from the East Greenwich YC before hoisting a full main and blade. The optional roller furler was still attached, making the headstay tension slightly soft, but nontheless, we sped upwind at 7.5 knots. The boat is stiff and was barely affected by the wind-driven chop. The high freeboard kept the leeward rail out of the water even though we were sailing with 20 degrees of heel. With a full race crew on the rail and proper headstay tension, this boat would be a rocket in anything over 10 knots.

We bore off and popped the 1,308-sq. ft. symmetric chute. Shorthanded, and with the wind oscillating in 25-degree shifts, we were mindful of broaching, but the boat drove down easily enough and we exceeded 10 knots with little effort. Later, as we sailed upwind again, we rounded up a few times and we recalled experiences with other Jeppesen-designed rudders stalling in similar conditions. “The rudder sections we’re using are relatively sharp on the leading edge,” says Jeppesen, “which minimizes resistance but requires attentive trimmers.”

The sightlines on the boat are excellent and the wheel height was good for my 5’10″ size. The footchocks were well placed, and the helm sensitive–it’s an easy boat to keep in the groove.

The boat’s base price is $240,000, without sails and electronics, and Schroff told us $300,000 is a realistic sail-away cost. For this price, you also get a varnished mahogany cabin with recessed lighting. There’s a 3-foot chart table to port and a full galley, including refrigeration, to starboard. The folding table can be removed for racing, and while this boat doesn’t have the cruising interior we’ve seen on other X-Yachts models, the Danish craftsmanship is still very much in evidence. Forward there’s a V-berth with plenty of locker space and an adjoining head. Aft are equal-sized molded-in quarter berths, each with an adjacent hanging locker and a pair of removable pipe berths.

Initially introduced in Europe in 2000, the IMX 40 has been a success for the builder, with close to 100 boats built, and also for European owners who are winning in IMS 600 fleets (the IMX 40’s GPH is 598.9–the PHRF rating is 42). At the 2002 IMS Worlds in Capri, Italy, 14 IMX 40s competed in the B division.

Because the IMX 40 missed the 2002 Boat of the Year competition we asked BOTY judge and sailmaker Chuck Allen, who sailed the boat in the 2001 Newport Gold Regatta for a synopsis. “What I liked best is that it’s simple,” said Allen. “Headstay tension is critical, but even this has a simple turnbuckle that can be adjusted between races. With this boat’s speed it’ll be pitted against bigger boats, which it can outmaneuver.”

Schroff says two things stand out about the IMX 40: “The topmast is unusually stiff for a fractionally rigged boat. It allows you to get greater headstay tension, which helps in a breeze. The waterline beam is relatively narrow and wetted surface is lower than boats of similar size.”

My assessment of the IMX 40 is that despite the design brief it’s much more raceboat than cruiser, yet is still comfortable enough to cruise on and big enough to go offshore. It’s Vinylester resin and E-glass construction over Divynicell foam core added to the aforementioned grid system make it stiff and as our heavy-air test sail showed, it has good stability. We never got to see how well the 150-percent headsail would drive the 15,051-pounds of displacement through the water in light air, but Schroff says the boat performs best in 10 to 12 knots. In keeping with the boat’s racing audience, I’d lose the refrigeration, but there isn’t much else I’d change. In the right hands, whether your shorthanded for a weekend trip or racing in a blow, it’ll get you where you’re going quickly.

X-Yacht IMX 40

The new 40-footer is labeled a "performance cruiser/racer." Now in my book, there is a huge difference between a "performance cruiser" and a "racer." The characteristics that make a boat a successful performance cruiser will not help it when it crosses the starting line in a fleet of racing boats.

I have no problem with this boat. It's just that I have a problem with the ad campaign. I guess my problem is with the term "performance cruiser" and the fact that this label has also been attached to the Valiant 40/42 and similar stalwart cruising boats for the past 27 years. Maybe it's time I updated my definition of performance cruiser.

Let's look at this design from both perspectives: racing and cruising. Start with cruising. The interior is well laid-out in a minor variation of "basic plan A." There are two double quarter berths that can be closed off and have single upper berths overhead. These compartments (there's no way I'll call them "staterooms") are a little tight for my taste. I'm not claustrophobic, but I do like some room for air movement around me when I sleep. I'd be inclined not to enclose these berths. Privacy would suffer, but even the word "privacy" needs redefinition on a 40-foot boat.

This galley is too small for me. The icebox is dinky, and there is minimal counter space. I'd end up putting cooking stuff on the companionway ladder. "Could you get your foot out of my batter please!" This is not a cruiser's galley.

The rest of the layout looks fine. There is a 24-gallon fuel tank and almost 40 gallons of water tankage. This is a little on the anemic side for a true cruising boat. On the other hand, this is more interior than you would want on a racing boat.

The hull looks racy, but it's quite beamy with an L/B of 3.17. Draft is 7 feet, 11 inches and that will work quite nicely on the race course. The rudder is a knifelike blade, well aft. The D/L of the hull is 165. The auxiliary is a Volvo 40-horsepower with a saildrive. I have a Volvo saildrive on my own boat, and I love it. There is very low drag from these units.

The keel is a two-part unit with the top fin portion being cast iron, which is then attached to a lead bulb. The bulb attachment is designed to allow a quick and easy change of bulbs. "Would you hand me that heavier bulb dear?"

The rig is a fractional type with 11-degree swept spreaders. I don't have I, J, E and P so I can't tell you the precise SA/D of this rig. It's my guess that it's around 22.5. This is a very standard rig with the traveler placed right in front of the wheel where it belongs. I hate midboom sheeting.

I like this boat. I don't know what to call it, but 25 years ago we had dozens of boats like this, including the Pearson 35, Islander 36 and my old favorite the C&C 39. Some called them "racer/cruisers." I just called them boats. This new X-Yacht is a nice boat.

40 years of X-Yachts Holland & the Schuttrups family

Friday 30th August 2024

40 years of X-Yachts Holland & the Schuttrups family

When Rob Schuttrups saw an X-102 during a Scandinavian summer holiday 4 decades ago he instantly knew he had to have one. It wasn’t until wintertime that he found the time to visit the team at X-Yachts, where the address on the Marstrup Mollevej turned out to be a house with a medium-sized shed. Rob and his wife were invited for a coffee around the kitchen table – this was in the days when there was no office!

Later Niels Jeppesen called and persuaded Rob not only to buy an X-102 but also to take up the Dutch dealership, saying the dealership wouldn’t take up too much of his time. It took almost a year to sell the first X-Yachts in Holland, an X-79, but she was quickly followed by two X-402s – which were considered massive yachts in those days. The company grew quickly after that and within a few years, Rob’s order book was overflowing. Hard to guess the exact amount of sold boats, but our best guess is that Rob has sold around 250 new X-Yachts.

Rob is an expert racer as well as a very experienced cruiser sailor (including 7 Atlantic crossings). He has raced with the X-One ton boats, X-99 and X-35 one design classes with many successes, and cruised every holiday with his wife Marja and kids Nanno and Nikki on their X-102 and later X-332 in the South of France. Later they stepped up to an X-46 and then an X-50 to sail further offshore, including crossing the Atlantic. Once the second generation (more on that below) came into the office Rob and Marja got themselves an Xc 50 and sailed it from the Netherlands all the way to Puerto Rico.

imx 40 x yachts

The second generation

Nanno and Nikki both grew up with the X-Yachts brand, sailing on almost every model the yard has produced. Rob and Marja however always encouraged them to pursue their own interests. Nevertheless, they were pleasantly surprised when Nanno announced that he wanted to join the business after finishing his Masters’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering in 2007.

Since joining the business Nanno has raced a year with his own team on an Xp 33 and crossed the Atlantic 4 times, in his free time he is a keen Finn dinghy sailor.

Some years later, Nikki provided the next surprise as she also joined the company in 2012, after her Bachelor in Communications and some years at another company. Another lifelong X-Yachts sailor, also racking up 1 Atlantic crossing herself.

Nanno and Nikki took over the dealership with Nanno as director of sales and Nikki in charge of service and administration. They are now joined by their team technician Fabrizio and rigger Keesjan. Rob and Marja still frequently help at the office during busy times and with the boat shows.

“When we took over the business we were asked many times if it would be a good idea to have a business together with your brother/sister. We simply figured we knew each other very well and trusted one another.

Now 12 years later we can confirm we got it right and still enjoy working together and with the X-Yachts brand.”

After spending so much time in the office and working with X-Yachts of all types, do they still enjoy being onboard themselves? Absolutely! Nanno and Nikki currently own an X4.3 which they keep in the South of France and use for cruising with their own families. The passion for X-Yachts looks set to continue for many more years and perhaps the third generation will take over in 20 years…?

Loyal clients

The dealership has been based in Marina Muiderzand since 1991, just 20 minutes from Amsterdam. The set-up includes an office, a workshop, 5 moorings in front of the office, a 25 m. land dock for easy access to (pre-owned) yachts and an indoor storage hall for 6 yachts, sails and spare parts. We provide an all-around service for our X-Yachts clients, including winter storing between 25-30 yachts each year.

Our clients are all enthusiastic sailors, keen on having a yacht that sails well but who also place demand on good looks and a high level of quality. Since that is a combination that X-Yachts has specialized in over the years we can offer them just that. Meeting the needs of our clients, each with their own specific wishes and areas of interest makes the intriguing part of our business – particularly making sure we deliver the correct yacht in the correct specification for every client. Our own experience in both racing and (long-distance) cruising helps us and our clients to get it right.

We also notice that our clients very much appreciate the fact that we are a family business. We aren’t just selling yachts but we sell a way for our clients to enjoy themselves on the water, fulfilling long-awaited dreams. Sharing this passion for sailing gets their approval every time.
