THEORY AND BACKGROUND:

Total number of places on Course 3

Class Room Theory

This will provide you with the background knowledge to ensure effective learning, including details of the different hull types and engines as well as their handling ability. The theory will assist your progress in purchasing or hiring a vessel.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course begins by teaching boat preparation. As a result you can find out how to do boat maintenance checks and take emergency action if necessary. It also shows you how to check fuel tanks, lines and fenders, and safety equipment. This is important because the driver is responsible for ensuring the boat is in the right condition and safe to drive afloat.

An important thing you will learn is how to understand the use of a basic chart and its different colours. The charts have essential info regarding tidal heights, buoyage, and what to do dependent on each buoy colour. It sounds difficult but it is very similar to using a road map.

Another vital thing the course teaches is how to prepare a boat for safe launch and how to carry out launches and recoveries as safely as possible. This includes the legal requirements when trailing a boat on the road.

On the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course, learners will spend time mastering boat handling and several essential manoeuvres. For example, you will learn how to handle a powerboat at slow speed and close quarters. This includes handling when coming alongside, anchoring, approaching and securing to a buoy. There will be high planing speed manoeuvres, S & U turns, and stopping to learn, as well as understanding boating at safe speed.

One of the most important things the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course will teach you is what to do when there is a man overboard. Acting correctly here is vital and could be the difference between successfully rescuing someone and causing them further harm. You will need to use several slow speed manoeuvres here.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course assessment is designed to ensure that participants have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a powerboat safely and competently.

There is no formal exam at the end of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. Instead, the assessment process is continuous and informal, conducted by the instructor throughout the duration of the course.

Here’s a detailed overview of the assessment process and criteria:

Assessment Process

  • Ongoing Observation : The instructor continuously observes participants during both theoretical and practical sessions. This allows for real-time feedback and immediate correction of any errors.
  • Practical Demonstrations : Participants are required to demonstrate their ability to perform various tasks and maneuvers. These demonstrations are assessed on their effectiveness and safety.
  • Scenario-Based Learning : Realistic scenarios are used to assess participants’ problem-solving skills and their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical situations.
  • Regular Feedback : The instructor provides regular feedback on performance, highlighting areas of strength and those needing improvement.
  • One-on-One Discussions : Personalized discussions between the instructor and participants help to address individual concerns and provide tailored advice.
  • Repetition and Practice : Participants are encouraged to practice skills repeatedly to build confidence and competence. The instructor assesses improvement over time.
  • Peer Review : Occasionally, participants may be asked to observe and provide feedback on each other’s performance, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Summative Assessment : Towards the end of the course, a final assessment is conducted where participants demonstrate all the skills they have learned. This includes both practical maneuvers and theoretical understanding.

Over the 2 days we look at:

Launching and Recovering

Launching and recovering a boat from and onto a trailer using slipways. We look how we need to set up the boat prior to launching and potential problems that could arise. We talk you through how to recover a boat on to a trailer by both driving and winching the boat on, considering potential hazards that may arise.

Preparation of boat

We discuss pre-launch checks that must be carried out for safe boating. We’ll check all necessary equipment is present and in good working order such as fenders, anchor, flares, fire extinguisher and spare fuel containers. We will also check the navigational equipment is working.

Boat handling

This part of the course covers all the basics of safe boat handling. We take you through the use of a kill cord, starting and stopping the engine, steering (using the ‘steer then gear’ method) and boat controls. The course will give you an understanding of how the boat is affected by wind and tide, how engine trimming works and start to discuss high speed manoeuvres, as well as low speed handling both backwards and forwards.

We’ll execute manoeuvres such as an emergency stop, parking, man overboard and various turns. We will spend some time looking at how to deal with potential emergencies, towing a boat, how different boats handle. While on the boat we’ll be working as a team, and of course we will discuss navigating the infamous Swellies!

We’ll go through picking up and mooring a buoy, leaving and parking alongside a pier, pontoon or wall, plus tying the boat up correctly and safely. The course covers towing a boat too, a skill you may need in an adverse situation.

Shore-based learning

During the classroom session, we’ll spend some time looking at and understanding navigational charts, learning how to use a compass and planning a passage. We will also gain a basic understanding of the buoyage system, tides, tidal streams and basic VHF radio handling.

  • 0900 Meet your instructor, discuss the day over a tea or coffee, then it’s time to get kitted-up
  • 0930 Practical session on the boat
  • 1130 Lunch and shore-based session
  • 1400 Practical session on the boat
  • 1700 Review the day

Caitlin Clark completed an absolutely stunning crosscourt assist to Fever teammate Lexie Hull

I ndiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark has become well-known for her ability to pass the basketball at an elite level in the WNBA.

Against the Minnesota Lynx , Clark completed a mind-boggling assist from the other side of the court to teammate Lexie Hull with a fantastic pass.

It's always thrilling to see Clark hit one of these passes from a far distance, and she was in perfect sync with Hull on getting the basketball down the court for the points.

Indiana needed every bucket it could get, as it trailed Minnesota for most of the game. However, Clark made sure Hull was in perfect position to snag this stellar assist. Sometimes, it's all about good timing and better passing.
