Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel, More than Just a Port in the Storm

July 3, 2020 by Vanessa Workman 2 Comments

Although I live in a very pleasant area of Langkawi, Malaysia, the Covid-19 ‘lockdown’ chillout experience has its limits. Waking up to the same routine and same visuals for 100 days straight can take its toll on even the most content of individuals. What’s the remedy? A good old-fashioned staycation! And I didn’t even need to leave Langkawi as I found the perfect staycation location just across the island at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel . Not only was it perfect for me, I also discovered it to be one of the best hotels in Kuah Town . Very affordable too.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

The Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel is located at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in Langkawi’s main township of Kuah. The recent addition of adjacent Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi , with its many restaurants and shops, has created a unique trifecta for hotel guests now as they can get just about anything they need right on site. Or within walking distance.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

Conveniently situated within a 5-minute walk to the Kuah Ferry Terminal makes the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel an excellent choice for anyone coming to Langkawi via ferry. But it’s also just a 25-minute taxi ride (or shuttle service) from the Langkawi International Airport , so it’s easy enough to grab your luggage after landing and be at the hotel in a blink of an eye as well.

Arrival and Check-In at Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel

The colorful Mediterranean style shopping complex of Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi is a bit of an enigma for passersby. Knowledge that a cozy 44-room hotel lurks within the eye-popping façade is not obvious beyond small roof top logos. The subtle signage perhaps keeping this ‘hidden gem’ somewhat exclusive. In fact, it is only upon entering the breezeway of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club that you will see the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel sign in its eclectic, typewriter font.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

What’s it like to check in at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel during Malaysia’s Restricted Movement Control phase? It’s uncomplicated, as it should be. The hotel is now following solid Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) and I must say that they are doing an impressive job tackling this ‘new normal’.

I was greeted by mask wearing staff who took my temperature, and kept the appropriate social distancing while checking me in. It took well under 15-minutes. No bumbling around or wearing masks on chins to talk to me, just a quick professional attentive demeanor that left me feeling quite confident that I was in safe hands.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

It is of course an unusual time to be checking into a hotel and to be honest I did have my concerns. Even under normal circumstances I’m a stickler for good customer service and neat and tidy hallways and seating areas. But with the pandemic issues lurking I’m especially concerned about overall cleanliness.

I’m happy to report that the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel was clean as a whistle during my stay. Ship shape if you will. No hallways cluttered with mop buckets or brooms; no overturned chairs being ‘stored’ until business picked up again (which I find depressing). It felt loved and respected. The kind of hotel I wanted to stay in.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

And oddly, despite the fact that they just re-opened and there were few people milling around, there was a buzzy air throughout the hotel as well as the adjacent Fisherman’s Wharf Complex. It made me feel recharged from the get go.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

The floors and elevators of the hotel complex are also marked with red boxes as gentle reminders of social distancing recommendations as well as laminated SOP guidelines tastefully posted in the lobby and elevators. If you have any concerns about traveling due to the pandemic precautions, you can rest easy at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel; they are on top of it.

My Deluxe Seaview Room and Amenities

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the doors of my Deluxe Seaview Room . For me it was perfect in size, floorplan and décor, but the view from my balcony? It sealed the deal. The expansive view of the 250-berth Royal Langkawi Yacht Club marina against the backdrop of those 99-islands of the Langkawi archipelago is breath taking. Add in a few horn toots from the ferry boats and I had the full monty of a maritime experience right at the threshold of my balcony.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

With a minimalist approach to décor, the practical arrangement of furnishings accentuated the already ample floor space. Even with a sizable king size bed in place, there was still plenty of leg room. With a desk, sideboard table and 2 bedside tables, it was easy to keep the clutter down; an added perk for over-packer traveler types like myself.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

Other room amenities included fast WIFI, flat screen TV, electric tea kettle, mini- fridge and a personal safe. Plenty of closet space too. And in addition to the wonderful sea facing balcony, the bathrooms have a rain shower, with no skimping of available hot water. Oh yes, nothing beats a steady rain shower for de-stressing.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

The 44-room Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel has six room styles to choose from, but I chose the Deluxe Seaview Room as I was traveling solo and preferred a room with a direct sea view. The Deluxe Seaview Room is a good choice for couples as well as singles. I would not however recommend this room style for anyone with small children in tow due to balcony safety issues. Yes, you could always just keep the balcony door closed, but then what’s the point of having a balcony if not to enjoy it to its fullest, right? Other more child friendly room options are available.

Facilities Available at Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel

When it comes to facilities at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel, there is something for nearly everyone. In addition to having access to the 250-berth Royal Langkawi Yacht Club marina and a seaside swimming pool, the adjacent Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi offers guests eclectic shopping, diverse dining, a full-service spa and creative entertainment (inclusive of a karaoke venue).

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

The hotel’s 2 restaurants top the list of onsite eateries; Charlie’s Bar and Grill and Barbosa Pizza . Charlie’s Bar and Grill also serves up the hotel’s inclusive breakfasts; enjoyed seaside in Charlie’s open-air restaurant or delivered to your room. Come sundown, Charlie’s Bar and Grill also has one of the best seats in Langkawi for enjoying sunset .

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

Feel like exploring the Kuah Town area? Shuttle service is available, not only to and from the airport, but around Kuah as well.

Exploring Langkawi

If you feel like getting out and about, several popular Langkawi sightseeing options are within easy walking distance to the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel. The iconic Brahminy Kite statue of Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) and Lagenda Langkawi Dalam Taman (Lagenda Park) are both located next to the nearby Kuah Ferry Terminal . The location for the scheduled Wednesday and Saturday Night Markets is just another 10-minute walk down the road.

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Review

And for the more adventurous, Pulau Tuba (Tuba Island) is a 10-ringgit boat ride from the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel, with water taxis departures regularly scheduled at Jeti Dato Syad Omar (previously known as Marble Jetty); located next door to Fisherman’s Wharf. Visitors can also check in with This Week in Langkawi for updated listings of local Langkawi events and happenings.

My Verdict on the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel

At a glance I would not have thought the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel was much to write home about. But I was wrong. It’s a very cool hotel and has much to offer. It wouldn’t necessarily be my top recommendation for large gregarious families, but I would recommend it as a top pick for couples or small groups of families or friends. During these uncertain pandemic hindered travel times, the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel offers a breath of fresh sea air as well as a safe relaxing haven to hunker down in for a few days. If you need a staycation, I highly recommend staying here. I was an invited guest of Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel, but my opinions are my own.

Hi Cynthia, this hotel is now a Ramada hotel (I think)… but likely has the exact same room layout and location perks for sure. Great choice btw.

Hotel review: royal langkawi yacht club hotel.

IMG_20180325_091035

Early this year, we went for a family trip within Malaysia via flight. It was Jet’s second time boarding on plane since he was 2 years old. But during that time he barely know much. Now he’s more bigger and chatty, he enjoyed the ride and know what’s going on.

IMG_20180325_103707

As we arrived Langkawi Airport, Jet said, “Mummy, lets look at the map”. 😀

At the airport arrival hall, there is a row of counters offering car rental and travel packages within the island. If you want to save some hassle, you can pre-book before you arrive. For my 3days 2 nights trip, I rented a car from this company . I was given a rate of RM140 (during non-peak season). Meaning its RM70/night. Very good price! However the price may vary during school break or festive holidays. I got a Proton Saga FLX (Auto). I wouldn’t say the car condition was tip top but still acceptable.

IMG_20180325_190436

Seems like hotels at Pantai Cenang are more expensive. Therefore I changed my mind to book a hotel at Kuah. I got to know about this hotel from my friend who was coincidentally traveling to Langkawi a day later than me. Driving distance from airport to Royal Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel is about 14km (approx. 30 minutes). From Pantai Cenang to Kuah will only need 14.2km. Since we got a car to move about, so I thought staying in Kuah wouldn’t be a problem.

Car Park is available at this premise. But quite limited. Otherwise full, you can opt to park at the opposite car park lot at RM5/entry. It is waiveable for hotel guest.

“Initially it was known as Langkawi Yacht Club. In 1999, the royal patron of the club Sultan of Kedah state conferred the ‘Royal’ title to the club. Over the years, the club has grown in its stature and become one of the top favorites to the yachters from all over the world.”

At year 2015, the club undergone a major renovation. Level-1 there will be a lobby and a reception area. There are total 32 boutique rooms. So, I can say that our room is pretty new. 🙂

Hill View Family Room.

We booked the room for RM622 for 2 nights inclusive of breakfast via Expedia. The 31 m² area room with 2 Queen size bed.

IMG_20180325_162838

There’s also sufficient space for luggage.

Other amenities are kettle, instant coffee, bedroom slippers, complimentary drinking water in bottle, television, free wifi, refrigerator, in room safe box.

IMG_20180325_163100

The Family Room does not have seaview but only nature view. We could see monkeys climbing the trees ……………

also spotted the Macho Eagle flying around here. Not one but a few of them.

The AL-fresco breakfast area.

IMG_20180326_085346

The breakfast served was quite simple and not too much varieties unlike some hotels that serve like a feast. But it has the common ones like egg, toast, sausage/bacon, baked beans, hash brown, cereal, yogurt, nasi lemak, juice, milk and coffee.

IMG_20180326_085956

I like that they served Nasi Lemak Bungkus (nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf). It was very delicious too.

If you are lazy to drive out for dinner, you can also dine at Charlie’s Bar & Grill. A restaurant serving Western and also Asian food.

DSC05288

Dataran Lang/Eagle Square , one of Langkawi’s best known manmade attractions, a large sculpture of an eagle poised to take flight. This 12 metre-tall statue is one of the island’s most recognizable monuments.

It is just situated 690m away from the hotel.

IMG_20180326_084722

I enjoyed taking photos of this hotel view, be it during the day or during the sunset. Really love this breathtaking panoramic view. I do not have any complains about this hotel. All of us enjoyed our stay here.

Apart from this, Langkawi is a duty free state. You can buy lots of chocolates and liquor at really good price here. But for liquor there’s a restriction of 1 liter per person in case you are bringing it home.

4 Best Duty Free Outlets are:-

  • The Zon Shopping Paradise (at Pantai Cenang)
  • Coco Valley Langkawi ((at Pantai Cenang)
  • Langkawi Saga Shopping Centre (at Kuah)
  • Teow Soon Huat Duty-Free Shopping (at Kuah)

IMG_20180326_092917

We enjoyed traveling together now. Just that traveling with a little one, mummy has to be like a hawk, more alert to guard them. Now, Jet kept telling me to go Langkawi. Looks like he really love this place. I also like Langkawi. This is my 4th time in Langkawi. Its not just an island mainly for snorkeling or swimming. But there’s more to explore.

Langkawi Yacht Club⛵️I have only seen it in Hong Kong dramas before, it is pretty good, the overseas yachts are very professional, and the overall is good. Going out to sea is a more romantic way of traveling, but pay attention to sun protection

A Getaway to the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel (Review)

Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel

The Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel (book on Agoda ) is situated on the island of Langkawi in the Malaysian state of Kedah — 30km off Peninsula Malaysia’s northwest coast. The island is a popular holiday destination (and one of my favourites for a quick getaway) — and has a combination of gorgeous beaches and lush rainforests, and has tons of activities and tourist attractions for every kind of visitor.

Attached to the island’s Yacht Club and the adjacent Fisherman’s Wharf , the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel is located in the Langkawi’s district capital of Kuah . Being the main hub of the island, Kuah’s jetty serves as the entry point for visitors coming to the island from the water. And because the hotel is right next to the jetty, you can see ferries coming in, in addition to the luxury boats docked at the marina. It really is a wonderful sight — in the early mornings, and especially in the evenings with the beautiful view of the setting sun.

The Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel Experience

Upon arriving at Langkawi Airport — Fong and I rented a small Perodua Viva (for RM50~US$11 a day) and headed straight for the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel , which is about a 30-minute drive away. There is an open-air free carpark just next to the hotel entrance for guests; so parking the car and checking-in was pretty easy and hassle-free. And the first thing I did upon arriving at the hotel? Head straight for the huge balcony at the lobby that overlooks the gorgeous marina!

The hotel has two buildings — the main building, and the 1st floor of the Fisherman’s Wharf . I was accompanied to my room in the latter building, where the lovely Seaview Rooms are located. Later in the evening, I was taken for a short tour around the hotel and the Fisherman’s Wharf — where I got to see the many different rooms provided by the hotel, and all the restaurants and fun facilities to be found at Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Hotel Rooms

My spacious Seaview Room comes with a balcony that overlooks the marina — so I had lovely views to wake up to and to end the day. The room is equipped with a King sized bed (Fong loved that it is super comfy); facilities like the air-conditioner, a wide screen TV, safe, coffee making facilities, fridge, and a hot-water shower with the basic amenities. And, free wifi! I also liked that my water bottles were replenished every day. The interior design and furnishings of the room is pretty simple, yet modern.

The Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel also offers different types of room at the Fisherman’s Wharf wing — the Skylight Room with its open-aired showers, the Courtyard Room that faces the Artisan Alley, and the Hillview Room that overlooks the hill behind the hotel. The hotel provides huge family rooms too; and the 2,350 square feet Admiral Suite is located in this section as well — it comes with 3 rooms and baths, a living area, a dining area, a kitchenette, and a private terrace with the most inviting-looking jacuzzi! The Standard Rooms and Executive Suite with its humongous balcony is located at the hotel’s main building. There’s also the private Marina View Cottage (set on a hill away from the hotel) for short and long-term stays — and is the perfect hideaway for that fun family holiday.

Dining at the Fisherman’s Wharf

Fisherman’s Wharf is filled with restaurants and bars. On our first night at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel , we decided to head for a big-fat steak dinner at Jake’s Charbroil Steaks . It was such a romantic dinner as we dined al-fresco while watching the sky change colors with the setting sun, and watching the yachts light up as the day turned dark. The next day, we had lunch at Charlie’s Bar and Grill , where they serve patrons with local and international delights, all while getting to enjoy the view of the marina. I ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice (because I love my chicken rice and theirs was actually pretty good), and Fong had the Oxtail Curry. For pizza, there’s the Barbosa Pizza where you can also dine al-fresco; and for charcoal grilled burgers, there’s the small snack shop Dara@FWL .

We really enjoyed walking about the hotel and the comforts of our room that we never really got to sit down for a few rounds of drinks at Fisherman’s Wharf. However, late at night as I admired the night view from my room balcony, I could hear the band (and some random guests) singing from Scarborough’s Fish and Chips — it’s a restaurant, and a late night bar as well. Guests can also stop for a drink with cigars at the Trinidad Cigar Divan Lounge ; or enjoy a cocktail by the pool at Captain Eva’s Pool Bar .

Our daily buffet breakfast that is included with the hotel stay was served at Charlie’s Bar and Grill every morning.

Things to Do at the Fisherman’s Wharf

We spent 3 days at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel and felt that it was not nearly enough time! Well, we actually spent most of the day at the pool soaking in the sun, and by the verandah admiring the yachts at the marina. But during that little free time we had, Fong and I strolled around Fisherman’s Wharf — dropping by the Artisan Valley at the courtyard that is lined with shops selling arts and crafts like jewellery, clothes, handbags and souvenirs. There’s also a convenience store and a diving centre.

I really wanted to drop by Black Pearl Reflexology and Spa for a little relaxing massage — but like I said, there wasn’t enough time! The massage centre has a whole range of spa treatments, from their Signature Massages to facials and scrubs. Fisherman’s Wharf also added a new entertainment outlet recently for those who are looking to let loose and sing their hearts out — the Jolly Roger Family Karaoke opens way past midnight, so there’s still more things to do for the night owls.

Oh, and if you’re looking for photo spots (other than the beautiful marina and its sunset), Fisherman’s Wharf has a few hidden corners for you to get that instagram-worthy shot. From large structures of fishes and sharks, and photo cut-out boards (where you can put your face in); to the lovely pastel colors of the building itself — I had some good shutter time.

What to Do in Langkawi?

Langkawi is one of my favourite places for a quick getaway for some sun and sea. I have been lucky to be able to visit the island countless of times during the last few years. The first few times I visited, I went all touristy and drove around to some of the island’s most popular attractions, explored small villages, and discovered hidden temples. So nowadays — whenever I visit, I am contented to enjoy the comforts of my hotel and laze about under the sun. I love that Langkawi has a little bit for everyone, be it a new traveler to the island or someone who returns occasionally; whether you are a history buff, an animal and nature lover, an adventure addict, a shopaholic, or a sunseeker.

So for a complete island immersion, here’s a list of things you can do when you are in Langkawi. Pick and choose, do them all, or don’t do anything at all and just lounge all day — Mynn’s Top 20 Things to Do in Langkawi .

End of the Day

I have to admit that I always have a great time in Langkawi. And at the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel , it was yet another great time — but of course, with a totally different vista! Staying here, I not only got the view of the ocean, but I also got a view of some of the most beautiful yachts I have ever seen. The hotel is at a pretty strategic spot right next to the main jetty of the island, and of course, since its situated in the main town of Kuah — there’s the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall and lots of other choices of restaurants just a quick drive away (we headed out for a seafood dinner too, at the nearby Langkawi Fish Farm ).

Oh Langkawi — it was so good to be back, and I will definitely be back again. And thanks for fulfilling a part of my yacht dream, Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel!
