Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Sail Areas: Main 7.60m2/ 82 Sq.Ft. Jib 3.60m2/ 39 Sq.Ft. Total 11.2ms/ 121 Sq.Ft. Built in Norway but effectively promoted and exported around the world during the 1960’s. An active Norwegian class association has continued into the 21st century.

I have, rather unsurprisingly, Skipjack K8 in Tollesbury, Essex. The BB11 (well, mine!) made it to no 132 or something in the last Classic Boat poll of the best 200 boats/classes of all time. There was another BB11 on the Blackwater recently, and I believe there was one for sale in the UK that looked very well rebuilt recently (although I thought the coffee grinders were a bit excessive for a 40 square foot headsail!). David Lynch has a good site detailing the rebuilding of a BB11 ( http://www.bluedome.co.uk/BB11/ ). I talked to Jack Chippendale, and he recalled that they imported 'about thirty' BB11s into the UK in the early sixties. I think it was the 1960 London Boat Show that they had a BB11 on their stand. Beatiful boat, beautiful to sail.

Here's a bit of information on 'Janye' UK32 which I owned from 1976 - 1986. Bought on Coniston, & previously kept at Piel Island (Barrow in Furness), she was then in early old age & suffering a bit. Even had drying legs. I re-decked her, had her re-ribbed (at Crossfields yard, Arnside - there was an article in one of the yachting mags at the time - I still have a copy) put on new sails (jeckells), centre main sheet & some little Gibb self tailing winches (purchased from the boat show for £30 ! A bit OTT but great when single handing). Black hull, white deck, mahogany brightwork, white bottom. the bees knees, a pure delight to sail with classic keelboat handling (So much nicer than modern flat bottomed fin jobs if not quite as fast) I kept her on Windermere for 10 years, then sold her when small babies demanded things like potties & things. I sold her to a gentleman from Essex. I wonder where she is now ? Said babies are all grown up & want her back !

Betty Blue - participating boat

Betty Blue

The BB11 is a strict one design, conceived in 1956, as a high quality, moderately, priced yacht, equally suited both for day, cruising and racing as a “thoroughbred “racing boat. The BB11 is fast and dry, having an easily driven and particularly seaworthy hull form. The long keel and high freeboard making it directionally stable and seaworthy.
The all up weight of the yacht is under 3/4 of a ton and it can easily be trialed by road.

BB11 is designed and built exclusively by Borge Bringsvaerd in Norway. The Builder combined the best traditions of Norwegian boat building with a modern flow production system to create a quality product of outstanding value.
In 2006 the BB11 was named the all time Norwegian sailboat and was also used to train Navel cadets.
The last produced BB11 was in 1968. Betty Blue was built in 1957 and was formerly called Teal and was based on the Helford.

The BB11 One Design (All dimensions and other information is taken from the 1957 BB promotional leaflet.)

General Notes

The BB11 is a strict One Design, conceived in 1956 as a high quality. moderately priced yacht, equally suited both for day cruising and class racing. As a 'thoroughbred' racing boat, the BB11 is more economical to maintain than the majority of keel boat classes, and appeals particularly to the dinghy sailor who wants to continue class racing with more comfort and less expenditure of effort. The BB11 is fast and dry, having an easily driven and particularly seaworthy hull form. Built in buoyancy is incorporated in the hull to ensure maximum safety under all conditions. the all-up weight of the BB11 is under three quarters of a ton and can easily be trailed by road. The BB11 is designed and built exclusively by Borge Bringsvaerd, Drobak, Norway. The builder has combined the best traditions of Norwegian boat building with modern 'flow' production systems to create a quality product of outstanding value. There are BB11 Fleets in more than 10 countries, and several hundred yachts have been built and are racing throughout the world. The strict One Desing nature of the class is ensured by rigid and up to date rules controlled by the International BB11 Association, and the fact that all boats are constructed by one builder ensures that as far as possible hulls are identical. The class has been granted National status by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club.

Logo

The Norwegian sailboat BB1 is 20 feet long made of mahogany. The very first boat was launched on 1 January 1956 and was produced in series until 1968. It was built in excess of 1300 of the little Norwegian sailboat BB1s and today there are about 350 left in Norway. The rest were exported to USA, Canada, Asia, Africa and most countries in Europe. Borge Bringsværd from Arendal had the idea for the boat and built it at his yard outside Drøbak . He collaborated with jeweler Knut Larsen on the construction.

Børge Bringsværd Børge Bringsværd built rowboats, kayaks, motorboats and sailboats. He also built a boat for the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. The first BB1 he built alone. The logo BB11 was embroiderd on the sail.  BB is Børge’s initials and 11 denotes the eleven square meters sail. The price was about $ 550 and the serial production could begin.

BB1 has been floating for more than 60 years. It has survived rough sea and stiff gale, rot and rain and even plastic boats. In 2006 it was named the all-time Norwegian sailboat by the magazine Seilmagasinet .

The Little Norwegian Sailboat

The Little Norwegian Sailboat The BB1s are good sailers, stable and handle wind well. BB1 is a nice looking small classic looking a little like Sunbeams or Brown Boats in England. BB1 was used as sail-trainer at Haakonsvern – the Naval academy. The long keel and high freeboard make it directionally stable and seaworthy.

The last produced BB1 was launched in 1968. You can see the sailboat’s data here .

Review of BB 11

Basic specs..

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The BB 11 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.98 - 1.08 meter (3.22 - 3.52 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for BB 11 is 2.07, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 4.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for BB 11 is about 48 kg/cm, alternatively 273 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 48 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 273 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.11

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 8m 2 (86 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

The BB11 Boat Owner

IMG_69091

Duncan  Hubbard.

When I go down to the BB11 boat shed on a wintery Thursday evening, it is still, after 15yrs, so nice to hear and see the ongoing winter repair and summer season preparation work in full swing. Usually before I have reached my own boat I will have stopped, watched, advised and discussed the various ongoing activities on several different boats.

The variation of methods and tools used for similar works by different owners is quite interesting – e.g. to remove old varnish – by sanding or hot air gun and scraping. Also the extent & quality of the finished work varies from owner to owner.

IMG_69071

Over the years I have seen the emergence of two different groups of boat owners. At the initial boat restoration these ‘differences’ start to appear but tend to be minimal. However, as the completed boats age, then the different owner’s approaches widen into two groups.

Starting from the lifting out of the boats for winter storage, you will see differences. First the boat`s cradle – good condition or “hardly fit for purpose”. Once positioned inside the Båtbua, one group will remove items from within the boat that might require cleaning & dry storage. Sails are removed along with empty bottles and beer cans. The boat is given an internal spraying of oil, covered and layed up in a particular manner. For the other group, their boats tend to be left ‘as is’ until preparation for the coming season is commenced.

Preparation work for the coming season by one group is completed in a detailed and specific manner. Wood working is carried out using, what they consider as “correct” tools and sandpapers. Quality tools tend to be used. Painting and varnishing is methodical, using good paints and varnish. Deck equipment is removed prior to painting the deck. The overall finished package clearly shows the effort afforded, complete with an expression of pride on the owner`s face. For this group the preparation for sea setting is completed in a similar manner. Nothing is left to chance. Automatic pumps have been removed, cleaned and checked. Batteries fully charged. Fenders and ropes are all in place. And a neatly placed paddle oar is ready inside.

1111

For the other group of equally enthusiastic sailors, the sea setting preparation tends to be carried out in a quicker and less methodical way. They know what has to be done, but it`s kept to the minimum requirements. Equipment and materials used are, maybe, purchased from Biltema. Painting sees the tell-tale marks left on deck items. Varnish work is sometimes completed in haste, leaving the resulting runs down both sides of the boat. Sea setting checks are minimal and tend to happen in the last hours before crane lorry arrives. (I have actually seen a complete coating of varnish being applied less than two hours before lifting onto the water). Unchecked pumps are connected to a half- charged battery, usually just by bare wires. More often than not some in this group slip into semi – panic mode, sooner rather than later, causing stir amongst everybody involved.

Two different groups continue to be visible when the boats are moored at the summer quays. Mooring ropes for the first group are usually the required size and length, arranged and tied in a self-proclaimed correct manner. For those in the second group, the differences are not big, but they are there.

It is also possible to identify the group differences during some regattas. One group may be a little more anxious for their boats. The competitive spirit is there but may, in certain circumstances, be held back in case of damaging their carefully maintained boat.

This article is not a criticism of either group, or the equipment/materials they use, rather my humorous and pondering insider’s view and observation, over the years, of a small group of enthusiastic wooden boat owners, who, in their various ways, contribute to the multi-national and varied bunch of BB11 enthusiasts which gives our club such a broad appeal. All of whom are fond of their boats and love sailing.

So which group do you belong to? Are you the fussy and thorough, well prepared boat owner, or are you more of the ‘happy go lucky ‘ type?

Next summer, take a look at the BB11 boats in gjestehavna. Neat ropes or heap of ropes?

P10400222

Whichever group you  are part of, I wish you all a good 2016 sailing season and enjoy your boat.

Duncan Hubbard

THE WORLD'S FINEST CLASSIC WOODEN BOAT LISTING SITE SINCE 1998

  • USS Missouri (BB-11)

The USS Missouri (BB-11) was a Maine Class battleship built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock.  The keel was laid down in 1900, launched in December 1901, and commissioned in December 1903.  After commissioning she completed sea trials off the Virginia Capes in early 1904 and then training in the Caribbean.   On April 13, 1904, while in Pensacola, Florida there was a disaster on board when 29-men were killed and 5-others injured.   Captain Cowles was in command, brother-in-law to President Roosevelt.  His actions to immediately flood the magazines potentially prevented a much larger disaster.  The disaster was caused by 2,000 pounds of powder in the after twelve-inch turret.  The Missouri was on the target range with the USS Texas and USS Brooklyn  when the incident occurred.  Leading the rescue party was Captain Cowles who rushed below to enter with the Ordnance Officer, Lieutenant Davis to assist sailor from impacted spaces.  Five of the men killed were officers directly associated with the operation of the turret.

The photo postcard at right was taken by Enrique Muller.  To see more of this collection follow this link:  Enrique Muller Photographers

In June of 1904 she left Newport News for a tour in the Mediterranean arriving back in the States in December.  For the next three years she conducted training exercises, including relief work in Jamaica fromm 17-19 January of 1907 after an earthquake.  In April of 1907 she participated in the Jamestown Exposition.

In June of 1907, Greenleaf Merriam was given command of the USS Missouri and remained in command for the first part of the voyage until San Francisco.

This card is from a series that was made to give out for free with delivery of the newspaper.  Most of the cards I have collected were from the Lincoln Daily Star, this one showing Captain Augustus Merriam with the USS Missouri.  The photograph is copyrighted by Enrique Muller.

The accident that happened on April 13, 1904 was not lost on the Navy.  Of particular concern was how the Navy honored its heroes.  The below cards are part of a series showing the services and treatment of the dead sailors.  In the first card the bodies of the sailors are being brought ashore.  In card number 2 sailors can be seen lined up to honor there crewmembers as they are brought ashore.  In card number 5 the bodies are being taken to the cemetery using wagons.  In card number 6, burial services at the cemetery.

farewell ball - crew of missouri

On Wednesday October 13th, 1907, the crew of the USS Missouri gave a ball at the Odd Fellows Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The ship would be busy preparing for departing on December 17th and would not be back to Boston.  Thecard below is from this event, 24 songs played by Condit's Orchestra, and dinner of Roast Turkey and Lobster Salad catered by D. Strachan.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising.
