The Norwegian sailboat BB1 is 20 feet long made of mahogany. The very first boat was launched on 1 January 1956 and was produced in series until 1968. It was built in excess of 1300 of the little Norwegian sailboat BB1s and today there are about 350 left in Norway. The rest were exported to USA, Canada, Asia, Africa and most countries in Europe. Borge Bringsværd from Arendal had the idea for the boat and built it at his yard outside Drøbak . He collaborated with jeweler Knut Larsen on the construction. Related: The Norwegian Tall Ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl. Børge Bringsværd Børge Bringsværd built rowboats, kayaks, motorboats and sailboats. He also built a boat for the famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. The first BB1 he built alone. The logo BB11 was embroiderd on the sail. BB is Børge’s initials and 11 denotes the eleven square meters sail. The price was about $ 550 and the serial production could begin. It has survived rough sea and stiff gale, rot and rain and even plastic boats. In 2006 it was named the all-time Norwegian sailboat by the magazine Seilmagasinet . The Little Norwegian Sailboat The BB1s are good sailers, stable and handle wind well. BB1 is a nice looking small classic looking a little like Sunbeams or Brown Boats in England. BB1 was used as sail-trainer at Haakonsvern – the Naval academy. The long keel and high freeboard make it directionally stable and seaworthy. The last produced BB1 was launched in 1968. You can see the sailboat’s data here . The Little Norwegian Sailboat, written by Tor Kjolberg Review of BB 11Basic specs.. The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed. The BB 11 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.98 - 1.08 meter (3.22 - 3.52 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below. Sailing characteristicsThis section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats. What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)? The capsize screening value for BB 11 is 2.07, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races. What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed? The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 4.9 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed. The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for BB 11 is about 48 kg/cm, alternatively 273 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 48 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 273 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch. Sailing statisticsThis section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points. What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)? What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)? What is a Ballast Ratio? What is Displacement Length Ratio? SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 15.11 MaintenanceWhen buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 8m 2 (86 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need. If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful. When I go down to the BB11 boat shed on a wintery Thursday evening, it is still, after 15yrs, so nice to hear and see the ongoing winter repair and summer season preparation work in full swing. Usually before I have reached my own boat I will have stopped, watched, advised and discussed the various ongoing activities on several different boats. The variation of methods and tools used for similar works by different owners is quite interesting – e.g. to remove old varnish – by sanding or hot air gun and scraping. Also the extent & quality of the finished work varies from owner to owner. Over the years I have seen the emergence of two different groups of boat owners. At the initial boat restoration these ‘differences’ start to appear but tend to be minimal. However, as the completed boats age, then the different owner’s approaches widen into two groups. Starting from the lifting out of the boats for winter storage, you will see differences. First the boat`s cradle – good condition or “hardly fit for purpose”. Once positioned inside the Båtbua, one group will remove items from within the boat that might require cleaning & dry storage. Sails are removed along with empty bottles and beer cans. The boat is given an internal spraying of oil, covered and layed up in a particular manner. For the other group, their boats tend to be left ‘as is’ until preparation for the coming season is commenced. Preparation work for the coming season by one group is completed in a detailed and specific manner. Wood working is carried out using, what they consider as “correct” tools and sandpapers. Quality tools tend to be used. Painting and varnishing is methodical, using good paints and varnish. Deck equipment is removed prior to painting the deck. The overall finished package clearly shows the effort afforded, complete with an expression of pride on the owner`s face. For this group the preparation for sea setting is completed in a similar manner. Nothing is left to chance. Automatic pumps have been removed, cleaned and checked. Batteries fully charged. Fenders and ropes are all in place. And a neatly placed paddle oar is ready inside. For the other group of equally enthusiastic sailors, the sea setting preparation tends to be carried out in a quicker and less methodical way. They know what has to be done, but it`s kept to the minimum requirements. Equipment and materials used are, maybe, purchased from Biltema. Painting sees the tell-tale marks left on deck items. Varnish work is sometimes completed in haste, leaving the resulting runs down both sides of the boat. Sea setting checks are minimal and tend to happen in the last hours before crane lorry arrives. (I have actually seen a complete coating of varnish being applied less than two hours before lifting onto the water). Unchecked pumps are connected to a half- charged battery, usually just by bare wires. More often than not some in this group slip into semi – panic mode, sooner rather than later, causing stir amongst everybody involved. Two different groups continue to be visible when the boats are moored at the summer quays. Mooring ropes for the first group are usually the required size and length, arranged and tied in a self-proclaimed correct manner. For those in the second group, the differences are not big, but they are there. It is also possible to identify the group differences during some regattas. One group may be a little more anxious for their boats. The competitive spirit is there but may, in certain circumstances, be held back in case of damaging their carefully maintained boat. This article is not a criticism of either group, or the equipment/materials they use, rather my humorous and pondering insider’s view and observation, over the years, of a small group of enthusiastic wooden boat owners, who, in their various ways, contribute to the multi-national and varied bunch of BB11 enthusiasts which gives our club such a broad appeal. All of whom are fond of their boats and love sailing. So which group do you belong to? Are you the fussy and thorough, well prepared boat owner, or are you more of the ‘happy go lucky ‘ type? Next summer, take a look at the BB11 boats in gjestehavna. Neat ropes or heap of ropes? Whichever group you are part of, I wish you all a good 2016 sailing season and enjoy your boat. The keel was laid down in 1900, launched in December 1901, and commissioned in December 1903. After commissioning she completed sea trials off the Virginia Capes in early 1904 and then training in the Caribbean. On April 13, 1904, while in Pensacola, Florida there was a disaster on board when 29-men were killed and 5-others injured. Captain Cowles was in command, brother-in-law to President Roosevelt. His actions to immediately flood the magazines potentially prevented a much larger disaster. The disaster was caused by 2,000 pounds of powder in the after twelve-inch turret. The Missouri was on the target range with the USS Texas and USS Brooklyn when the incident occurred. Leading the rescue party was Captain Cowles who rushed below to enter with the Ordnance Officer, Lieutenant Davis to assist sailor from impacted spaces. Five of the men killed were officers directly associated with the operation of the turret. The photo postcard at right was taken by Enrique Muller. For the next three years she conducted training exercises, including relief work in Jamaica fromm 17-19 January of 1907 after an earthquake. In April of 1907 she participated in the Jamestown Exposition. A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
