The Fastest & Biggest Catamaran Ferries

FerryGoGo

Catamaran Ferries are faster than traditional ‘monohull' ferries. These ferries can achieve much higher speeds. In Europe, you have several of these fast catamaran connections that you can take.

Take for instance the ferry on the connection between Hirtshals and Kristiansand:

Fjord FSTR Bron: https://www.fjordline.com/

The Fastest Ferry

The Franciso ferry remains the fastest ferry, built by Incat:

HSC Francisco is a High-Speed Catamaran built by Incat in Hobart, Tasmania. Powered by liquefied natural gas, she is currently the fastest passenger ship in service, reaching a speed of 58 knots (107 km/h; 67 mph). The propulsion is by two GE LM2500 water jets. Connecting Buenos Aires with Montevideo .

catamaran ferries international

A ferry connection is considered fast if more than 40 knots can be achieved. Only ferry catamarans make this. Boats that are often high and therefore have less friction with the water.

All fast Catamaran connections in Europe

Catamaran connections in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea

  • Aarhus – Odden
  • Rønne – Ystad (2 pieces)
  • Gothenburg (Sweden) – Frederikshavn (Denmark)
  • Gran Canaria – Fuerteventura ( Leonora Christina )
  • Hirtshals (Denmark) and Kristiansand (Norway)
  • Viking FSTR – Helsinki to Tallinn (Very fast!)

Bajamar Express

You also have these ferries in the British Isles, including from Stranraer to Belfast and ferries from England to the Channel Islands. Since these often change locations, it is difficult to pin them to one location or connection.

You also recently have more of these High-Speed ferries available around Greece.

The Largest Catamaran Ferry

HSC-Express

The largest diesel-powered catamaran ferry is the  HSC Express 1 and 2  between Aarhus and Odden (as well as Rønne and Ystad) in Denmark. More information about this catamaran can be found  here on Wikipedia  . The newer variants of this Ferry. For example, the HSC Express 3 is slightly smaller, so it may well be the case that these will remain the fastest and largest catamarans in the world for a very long time.

UPDATE: By the way, the  Express 5  will eventually become the largest.

Sometimes you hear that the Hodor pleasure yacht (  Astilleros Armon  ) is the largest catamaran with 60 meters, but this is incorrect. It is much smaller than the HSC Express at  112.6 meters .

The Bajamar Express is a beauty, love to see more of these catamaran ferries in Europe!

The White Blue ferry is the Iris 6.1 Catamaran Passenger Ferry. I think the project failed:

” The philosophy underpinning the design concept was the need to achieve three important targets. Most importantly, it had to be able to transport passengers in comfort. In order to impose a mimimal environmental impact on ports, estuaries and banks, it had to generate a low wake at all operational speeds. Lastly, it had to meet these standards without negatively influencing the hull form, which was designed to maximise speed and economy.”

The ferry is still active somewhere in Croatia. When you spot it let us know 🙂

The high speed catamaran ferries building program, the Pacificat Series 1000, was initiated by the B.C. government in 1994, partly to revive the shipbuilding industry in B.C., which had virtually shut down with the closure of Versatile Pacific Shipyards in the early 1990s. At 122.5 m long with a beam of 25.8 m they were the second largest aluminum multihull in the world. Their service speed is 37 knots. Construction was managed by CFI (Catamaran Ferries International Inc.), a wholly owned subsidiary of B.C. Ferries, with six B.C. shipyards participating in the construction. Their capacity is 1000 passengers and 250 cars (no trucks). Design was by the Australian company Incat Designs Pty Ltd., with Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. responsible for the machinery, auxiliary systems, electrical and outfitting aspects. A 6000 square foot, 13.4 million dollar assembly facility for the ships was built on Pier 94 in North Vancouver, just east of the former Versatile Pacific Shipyards. Construction delays and cost overruns became a major political issue for Glen Clark's NDP government. While originally budgeted at 70 million dollars each, the cost of the first ship ballooned to 118 million dollars, and the second and third to 104 million dollars each. Welding aluminum proved to be a particularly difficult problem. Attempts to sell the technology offshore met with no success. Numerous operational problems also plagued the ferries. They saw only limited service, and have been put up for sale at a fraction of their original cost. Construction ceased with the completion of the third ferry in the fall of 2000.

Find your ferry

Ferry croatia.

With more than 1200 islands, ferries and catamaran are an essential part of the transportation system in Croatia . In additional to domestic ferries, to the Croatian Island, there is also several ferry and catamaran connections from Italy to Croatia , majority of these lines only operate during summer season.

Why Ferry Croatia?

The ferry and catamaran lines in Croatia are operated by about 15 different companies , the main domestic carrier is the company Jadrolinija , often website refer to this page in relation to ferry schedules, but as mentioned this is just one company out of 15 so you will only find some of the ferry routes and timetables on their page, which is reason why we have made www.ferrycroatia.com , here you find ALL ferry timetable , regardless of carrier.

Buying ferry tickets in Croatia

Although there are a few exceptions, the general rule is that International ferry and catamaran departures can be booked online well ahead, for the domestic car ferry lines is it meanwhile also possible to book and reserve tickets on some routes. Alternative to buying tickets online is to go to the ferry terminal/ticket agent which you will find in each ferry port.

Why is it not possible to buy a ticket for a specific domestic car ferry?

The main reason why you can not buy a ticket for a specific departure online is the infrastructure of the ferry ports (Especially the ones on the islands). During the summer season the ports are often full, and there’s lots of traffic on public roads, which makes it very complicated if not impossible to use any other system than the “ first in” – “first-out” principle .

Ferry timetables – Seasonal ferries Croatia

The majority of the international ferries only sail during the summer season , which is usually lasts from 1st of May to 30 th of September.

Most domestic ferry routes normally (do not apply to all ferry companies) have timetables divided into the following three “seasons ”.

  • Main Season – 1st of July to 31 of August.
  • Pre-and after Season . 1 st of June to – 30 th of June and 1 st of September to 30 th of September.
  • Out of  Season – 1 st of October to 31 st of May the following year.

Under our detailed route descriptions below you will find all information about specific routes.

Ferry to Islands in Croatia

We recommend doing so, especially on the international routes, and routes operated by catamarans that have limited space.

In most cases, you need to buy a ticket either online or at a ticket office. Buying tickets onboard is possible only on a selected boat and catamaran lines.

The full timetable for all ferry, catamaran, and boat lines in Croatia can be found on our site. Use the search form above to find your desired departures.

In the winter months, ferry departures in Croatia are not as frequent as in the summer. This is due to the decrease of tourists going to Croatian islands. However, you can still travel with Croatian ferries in the winter, you will just have to plan your trip more carefully due to the decrease of lines.

If you are traveling on a car ferry, we certainly recommend getting there as early as possible, especially from June – September. If you’re a foot passenger, you can be at the ferry port as late as 10 minutes before departure.

Car ferries can transport both foot passengers and vehicles and are generally much slower than catamarans. Catamarans are designed only for foot passengers.

Yes, they can. If you are a foot passenger traveling on a car ferry in Croatia, you don’t have to worry if there will be enough space on the ferry, as there is plenty of space on car ferries for foot passengers.

If you’re traveling with Jadrolinija and miss your departure, you can use your ferry ticket for any departure on that day. Other catamaran companies have their regulation, and generally, with them, you can use your ticket only for the selected departures.

This of course depends on your financial situation, but generally speaking, ferry tickets are affordable. If you are traveling with your car, expect the prices to be significantly higher, as you need to pay a ferry ticket for your vehicle too.

This depends on the ferry company. Each company has its own rules and regulations, but generally, it is possible to bring your pets and a bike on board (with probable extra fees).  We recommend checking this information before your departure.

Nanaimo-Vancouver passenger ferry set to begin service in late summer

One of two 354-passenger high-speed ferries undergoing sea trials in Vietnam. CNW GROUP/VANCOUVER ISLAND FERRY COMPANY

A pair of new high-speed catamaran ferries sailing under the brand Hullo will begin offering up to seven round-trip sailings a day between Nanaimo and Vancouver in late summer, says the Vancouver Island Ferry Co.

Each trip on the 354-passenger walk-on ferries will take 70 minutes. Sailing schedules and fares will be released in early June, the company said.

Next month, the vessels are expected to leave Vietnam, where they were built by Damen Shipyards, to sail to Vancouver Island.

“The vessels are built and going through rigorous sea trials and the terminal areas are in the process of being upgraded to welcome our guests,” said Alastair Caddick, chief executive of the Nanaimo-based Vancouver Island Ferry Co., which held a ground-breaking Wednesday at the Port of Nanaimo, where the ferries will be based.

Facilities in Nanaimo will include a 400-space parking lot, EV charging and a guest welcome area.

Ferries will leave from Port Drive in Nanaimo to dock at the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre at Burrard Landing, at 1055 Canada Place.

The plan is for the vessels to depart early enough to allow Island commuters to get to downtown Vancouver offices for work, and return late enough so Nanaimo residents can take in an event or concert in Vancouver and be back home the same night.

Passengers will be able to reserve seats in three service levels: comfort, premium and business, with free Wi-Fi.

Vancouver Island Ferry Co. is just the latest in a string of companies to attempt a sustainable passenger ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver. It says it has lined up long-term partnerships with Snuneymuxw First Nation, the Nanaimo Port Authority and the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre.

Jenn Houtby-Ferguson, Tourism Nanaimo’s interim executive director, says he is eager to see the service begin. “It’s an opportunity for tourism to bring guests from the Lower Mainland to the Island and for folks already on the Island to go back and forth,” she said, adding the service will bring opportunities for special events and meetings. “The community is excited.”

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog also has high hopes for the ferry service, which he says will allow people to live in Nanaimo and go to work in Vancouver in a timely way, while those headed to Vancouver for medical appointments will have a comfortable way to get back and forth.

Krog said the ferry service will also allow the community to grow its tourism sector. “It means conventioneers can come from Vancouver, arrive in literally downtown Nanaimo, go to the hotel, attend their convention, do some tourist activities and head home without taking a car.”

A long-awaited hotel recently opened in downtown Nanaimo to serve the Vancouver Island Convention Centre and others. “All the pieces are falling into place,” Krog said.

Ferries in Croatia - Jadrolinija catamaran

Given the many, many islands off the country’s coastline, it’s highly likely that you’ll be utilising ferries in Croatia when you visit the country. The main ferry company in Croatia is Jadrolinija and they operate the vast majority of ferry and catamaran routes in Croatia, although other companies do also exist – see a complete list below.

Boats and ferries sail the Adriatic connecting major ports with almost all the inhabited islands all year round, with many routes having a higher frequency of sailings during the summer months.

Note: a famous (slow) ferry line that sailed down much of Croatia’s coast – connecting Rijeka with Split, Dubrovnik and some of the islands – that was run by  Jadrolinija  for 60 years – no longer operates.

Oryol ( Russian : Eagle ) is a city in the Chernozemye region of the Russian Federation . This regional capital is a destination for its clean air, old churches, and extensive literary and dramatic history.

Oryol is located 368 km to the South from Moscow , on the way to Ukraine and Crimea . It is just a 5-hour drive from Moscow, the road is a 4-lane highway until Tula , often bumpy though, and then 2-3 lanes of a moderate quality. Alternatively, you can take an express commuter train from Kursky railway station in Moscow. It starts at 6PM and arrives at Oryol at 10:40PM There is also an overnight 'sleeping' train starting at 11PM and arriving before 6AM Generally, there are a LOT of trains passing Oryol from Moscow on their way to Ukraine. The fare is US$10-20-40 depending on the carriage class.

Firmenny sleeper train Turgenev № 603/604 rides between Oryol and Moscow daily.

Map

The central part of the city is pleasant and walkable. To travel around, locals choose between public buses, trolley-buses, trams and numerous minibus-taxies. Fares vary from a fixed US$0.33 (buses, trolley-buses and trams) to US$0.50 (minibus-taxies); however, you may prefer to move around by a private taxi (US$3-7 for trips within the city). The interesting means of transportation is a river tram , a boat shuttling on the river for tourist purposes but may be used for other ones. It goes from the Central Park to Luzhki aka Luzhkovsky Bridge at 10-00, 12-00, 14-00, 16-00, 18-00, 20-00 if there is no less than 10 passengers abroad.
