The future of the motor boat has never looked so exciting but what form will it take? We take a closer look at five craft of tomorrow you can buy today

The 2019 Boot Düsseldorf show was awash with exciting new boats , brands and concept craft all claiming to represent the future of boating. Some were touting hybrid or pure electric drivetrains; others were offering radical new hull shapes, while yet another promised a completely fresh approach to its interior layout.

The one thing they all agreed on is that the market for motor boats is ripe for change, with customers looking not just for the next new model but for a genuinely fresh approach to the whole boating experience.

Having scanned the halls, here is our pick of the five most interesting new craft heading to a marina near you in the months ahead.

Solar Impact

Solar Impact is a 78ft ocean-going solar-powered motor yacht based on an aluminium SWATH hull. The result of a five-year research project by Swiss start-up SolarImpact Yacht AG, it claims to offer unrivalled luxury and refinement with cutting-edge aesthetics in a sustainable package.

What makes it special?

Its SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) design consists of two torpedo-shaped tubes housing the electric motors and batteries, which travel a few feet under the water, avoiding the waves which make life uncomfortable for conventional ‘surface’ craft. The accommodation is raised above the waterline on slender blades to minimise drag and frontal area.

Power comes from twin 500kW electric motors fed by an 800kWh battery pack which is kept topped by 300m 2 of solar cells mounted on the coachroof, hard top and folding wings. A pair of exceptionally compact 70kVA rotary-engined generators help extend the range during cloudy conditions. This is claimed to give a top speed of 22 knots for short periods with 10 hours battery life at slower cruising speeds and an indefinite range at 5 knots in calm sunny conditions.

The open-plan living areas are designed to feel like a luxury waterside apartment

Accommodation consists of a large open-plan saloon and galley on the main deck with a master suite forward and four twin or double cabins below, each with their own ensuite bathrooms, plus a further small cabin for crew.

When can I have one?

The first one is already in build at Schaaf Yachtbau in Germany with a projected launch date of February 2020. The price for this futuristic craft is €7.2million ex VAT.

X Shore is the closest thing yet to a Tesla for the sea according to its founder, the Swedish tech magnate Konrad Bergström. Having made his fortune in premium headphones and speakers, he has now turned his attention to creating an all-electric boat brand that offers proper performance and range in a stylish, sustainable and environmentally friendly package.

The design features a tall bow for a dry ride matched with a modular cockpit for flexible seating options. The hull has a deep step amidships with a single exposed shaft taking the drive from the electric motor in the bow to the propeller, which is set in a stern tunnel to keep the drive angle as close to horizontal as possible.

A unique gearbox using magnetic teeth that never actually touch the cogs reduces friction for maximum efficiency. The result is a claimed top speed of 40 knots and a range of 60nm at 25 knots or 100nm at displacement speed. Charging takes 8-12 hours depending on the source and the battery is good for 5,000 cycles.

It’s not just the drivetrain that’s innovative. The helm station features a rotary dial instead of a throttle lever, the seats are mounted on sliding rails and the steering uses fly-by-wire technology. Even the decks are made of sustainably sourced cork instead of teak. Front and rear bow thrusters make light work of manoeuvres.

There are two models available, the Eelex 8000 (pictured above and launched last year) and the smaller Eelex 6500 shown at Düsseldorf, deliveries of which begin later this year. Prices start from €249,000 ex VAT.

The Cetera 60 is a fresh take on a liveaboard cruising yacht with an innovative ‘multispace’ layout that prioritises space and comfort over performance. A joint venture between Guida Design & Engineering and the Fiart shipyard, it is claimed to have 30m² more living space than a conventional 60ft flybridge.

The starting point is a broad 18ft beam with a blunt rounded bow that barely tapers at either end on a hull designed for efficient cruising at 20 knots and a top speed of 23 knots. Twin IPS600 engines allow for a short engineroom and tender garage leaving space ahead for a full-length (but restricted height) technical deck with separate compartments for fuel and water tanks as well as electrics and batteries for the planned hybrid version.

All three sleeping cabins and bathrooms are on the lower main deck off a central corridor that leads from the water-level beach club area through to the forward cockpit. The saloon/study is forward and a couple of steps up, giving a clear view ahead as well as access to the spacious bow cockpit.

An internal staircase leads up to the large open-plan dining area, galley and helm on the enclosed upper deck, although drop- down windows and twin sunroofs open it up to the elements when required.

Hull no 1 is already in build and due to be launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Modular construction using simple box-shaped cabins keeps the starting price to €1million ex tax.

Arksen isn’t just a new breed of explorer yacht, it’s also a new approach to ownership that combines off-the-grid boating with a socially responsible attitude. All its boats are fitted with monitoring systems that continuously relay information about global water quality, and owners pledge to donate 10% of their vessel’s sea time to projects supported by the Arksen foundation, such as scientific research or film-making.

It’s the brainchild of entrepreneur and experienced sailor Jasper Smith, who spotted a gap in the market for a range of three adventure yachts from 70ft to 100ft that he claims are tougher, smarter and more efficient than the competition.

Designed by Humphreys Yacht Design and built by the Wight Shipyard Company in Cowes, they feature self-righting, aluminium hulls that can slip through the water at 7 knots using minimal power or push on to 14 knots when needed. Hybrid propulsion is optional but even with diesels the 85 has a range of 6,000nm from its 16,000-litre tanks. Fins, gyros and flopper stoppers maintain stability while solar panels generate up to 4.2kw of power.

All Arksen Yachts are designed to be semi-autonomous so that in the future Arksen Mission Control will be able to deliver your yacht to any given destination. It also plans to offer curated adventures to remote corners of the globe. Interiors by Design Unlimited are said to be stylish but also easily reconfigured from leisure to research or commercial use.

Arksen has sufficient funding to build the first boat on spec but is already discussing orders with potential buyers. Prices start at £4.5million ex VAT for the Arksen 70 rising to £8.5m for the Arksen 100. 1% of its annual sales will be donated to environmental causes.

The helm is just as clean and elegant as the design of the long, slender hull

The Q30 is perhaps the closest thing yet to the gentleman’s launch of the future. Designed and built in Finland with a long, slender 9.3m hull and a modern, minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic, it uses a proven Oceanvolt electric drive system to slip silently along.

Rather than attempt to create a high-performance electric sportsboat with all the limitations of speed and range that implies, Q-Yachts has focused on building an elegant, efficient and useable day boat for rivers, harbours and coastal waters.

With a cruising speed of 9 knots, a fast cruise of 14 knots and a claimed range of 42nm and 22nm respectively (double that if you opt for the 60kWh battery pack), it’s perfect for day trips. And because the entire drivetrain is supplied by Oceanvolt, it should work seamlessly together.

Charging from 5% to 95% takes 13 hours and the batteries are rated for 500 cycles with minimal loss. As Q-Yachts points out if you discharged it fully 50 times a year (the equivalent of 2,000nm/220 hours at 9 knots) the batteries should last at least 10 years and retain 80% of their capacity. You can also fit a 2kW petrol range extender if required. A cuddy cabin with a vee-berth and under-seat toilet makes overnighting possible and the whole boat is trailable.

The first boats have already been delivered and crucially for British customers, Wessex Boats (the UK importer for Targa and Marex ) is representing them in the UK. The boat comes with a two-year warranty and prices start at €183,000 ex VAT and delivery.

The Best Eco-Friendly Yachts of the 21st Century

There are many options for enjoying these beasts of the ocean in a more responsible way.

As yachts get larger in size, they generally also increase in fuel capacity and consumption, running costs and also environmental impact. However, in recent years, there has been a change in the world of superyachts. Today, we are witnessing more and more yachts take steps towards efficiency, reducing fuel usage and innovating when it comes to improving sustainability credentials.

Much like aviation, bio and sustainable fuels are becoming far more accessible and prevalent in yachting. There has also been an uptick in the use of hybrid propulsion — the use of a combination of different energy sources — most commonly this results in a combination of both diesel and battery power. There has also been a renaissance of the sail, with some owners looking to harness the power of the wind to aid their transportation. It also undeniably looks superb.  

As many yacht owners and potential buyers begin to focus more on the sustainability of these vessels, yacht builders are taking note. Here, Elite Traveler takes a closer look at some of the most impressive eco-friendly yachts to have hit the water during the last two decades. We will also be taking a quick look at what’s on the horizon.

Launched by Dutch yard Royal Huisman in 2008, 190-ft ketch Ethereal was a trendsetter that paved the way for future ‘eco’ superyachts. The first superyacht with a true hybrid system on board, she was the dream of owners Bill and Shannon Joy who set out to challenge the norm of yacht building. Together with the shipyard, naval architect Ron Holland and exterior/interior designer Pieter Beeldsnijder, the Joys worked to create a yacht that would have the lowest possible impact on the planet. The result was a technologically advanced design that delivered energy efficiency in a sleek and high-performance package.

Thanks to a twin hybrid electro-mechanical propulsion system, which recharges her battery bank, Ethereal can operate for long periods of time under the quiet stored power of her own resources. Every detail of Ethereal was examined for ways to reduce energy demands—from lighting to air-conditioning—and she delivers an impressively efficient performance when underway. Her open interior, with a warm and welcoming feel, invites guests in— fittingly, as her entire layout was designed to maximize spaces and allow those on board to spend quality time together. Since her launch Ethereal has traveled the world, treading lightly wherever she goes.

At 350 ft, Black Pearl is the largest sailing superyacht in the world. She is certainly not inconspicuous but, despite her size, she is extremely eco-friendly. Delivered by Oceanco in 2016, Black Pearl is said to have the capability to cross the Atlantic using zero fossil fuel. Plans for undertaking this particular feat were underway when Covid-19 hit and delayed this attempt, but her captain, Chris Gartner, says that the owner and the Black Pearl’s team are committed to going ahead with that as soon as possible.

Black Pearl incorporates features that ensure a lower environmental impact: propellers that can generate electricity when operating in ‘regeneration mode’ and, one of her most impressive features, her sails also double as a source of power. Measuring an incredible 31,215 sq ft, Black Pearl’s sails have built-in solar panels that create electricity that is then stored so it can be put to use elsewhere as needed. The DynaRig sails also allow the yacht to be easily operated under sail power as much as possible, greatly reducing the need for fuel.

Savannah , built by Dutch shipyard Feadship and hailed as the first hybrid motoryacht at her 2015 launch, is also the world’s largest metallic-painted floating object. This beautiful yacht has collected many awards, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2016 World Superyacht Awards. Her ‘Breathe’ propulsion system delivers 30% fuel-saving economies, and she can cruise under diesel-electric or simply electric battery power.

Savannah set a precedent for other eco-friendly projects from Feadship, including the ultra-sustainable 308-ft Viva (Hull 817), which has made waves since her February 2021 launch. As attractive as she is innovative, her elegant, four-deck floating superstructure pairs world-class technology with timeless style; features include the ‘Nemo Lounge,’ where you can peek below the waves and marvel at passing sea life from the comfort of the yacht. The main deck has a 30-ft pool and two main salons that are divided by a video wall, and the owner’s stateroom boasts a skylight above the master bed for admiring the starscape above.

The impressive 262-ft Artefact , designed by Gregory C Marshall and delivered by Nobiskrug Yachts in 2020, is a head-turner for more than one reason. Her striking exterior, which makes clever use of glass, is the most obvious, but her eco-credentials are her biggest asset. Built for visionary owners who specifically requested a yacht with a reduced environmental impact, Artefact’s many solutions for this brief include 248 ft of solar panels and a battery storage system that allows the yacht to operate without its main engines for extended periods.

Added to that is her dynamic positioning system and Azipod propulsion system – these allow Artefact to easily hold her position without needing to use her anchors and reduce her emissions while also upping her efficiency. In fact, she was one of the very first superyachts built to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations. For those wishing to enjoy pristine surroundings without interruption, Artefact is also capable of silent operations. This ‘greener’ superyacht certainly doesn’t compromise on comfort and on her launch was the biggest volume yacht of her size in the world. Sailing Yachts

Originally launched in 1993, the 143-ft Juliet was reborn in 2021 after an extensive “go greener” refit at her original build yard, Royal Huisman. Newly transformed into a hybrid yacht, Juliet now bears technologies that will future-proof her for years to come. Her new hybrid system offers numerous benefits including silent operations, zero emissions, peak-shaving, shaft-generated power under sail and reduced fuel consumption. A brand-new gearbox, aligned with a sophisticated new electric motor/generator, will allow electric propulsion that is powered by either the main engine or alternatively the battery pack or generator. Meanwhile, a battery bank will allow Juliet to operate in ‘silent ship’ mode.

When stretching her legs under sail, the rotation of the propeller will generate electric power. When at anchor she can run on battery power so guests can relax without any noise pollution that might detract from their surroundings. With nearly a quarter a million miles logged since her launch, Juliet is now ready for the next quarter million miles to come.

Swan 88 Hybrid

Finnish builders Nautor’s Swan has joined the trend for hybrid yachts with its Swan 88 Hybrid model, which has a hybrid-electric propulsion system that marks a new era for the yard’s Maxi range. This new direction for the yard includes making greater use of eco-friendly materials in its designs. The Swan 88 Hybrid is the yard’s first attempt at a hybrid yacht, and the design has already borne fruit – in May 2021 it announced it had already sold the first hull.

Described by Nautor’s Swan as a “dual soul of racer and cruiser,” the Swan 88 Hybrid pairs comfort and performance and is an excellent ‘starter size’ superyacht that is spacious but manageable. The minimalist exterior design by German Frers is complemented by “a comfortable, harmonious and magical” interior by Misa Poggi. An easy-handle sail plan makes use of the brand’s long experience in ocean racing, delivering “efficient, uncomplicated and easily managed sailing”. The layout and design has been tailored to maximize guest comfort on longer trips – this first model will be able to travel the world with a lighter footprint thanks to her eco credentials.

Sailing purists the world over treasure the sight of a J Class yacht. Original J Class yachts raced in the 1930s under the Universal Rule, in events including the America’s Cup. There have been several replica J Class yachts built in modern times as well. Elegant Rainbow is one such replica and was built in Holland in 2012 by Holland Jachtbouw. Her design was based on the original Rainbow , which won the America’s Cup in 1934, and it paired the best of classic yacht design with all the necessary modern technologies and comforts.

Like many other eco-friendly sailing yachts, Rainbow is powered by a hybrid propulsion system – in fact, she was the first J Class to boast this capability. This means a welcome 30% reduction in fuel usage, as well as the option of silent operations when underway. Built by Finnish firm Baltic Yachts in 2019, the 142-ft Canova takes the title of being the yard’s very first zero emissions yacht over 100 ft. This was a mandate of her owner, who wanted his long-distance cruising yacht to be as green as possible. Canova more than met the mark and carries an impressive line-up of modern technologies including a power regeneration system that, in theory, allows a never-ending supply for the yacht to make use of. An added first is that Canova is the first superyacht to be fitted with a transverse Dynamic Stability System foil, which delivers unprecedented comfort levels for a sailing yacht by reducing heel and motion.

Guests can relax on board Canova and enjoy nine hours of ‘silent’ mode made possible by an electric propulsion system that also charges the on-board battery bank. An easy-to-handle, yet powerful, sail plan ensures hoisting the sails is a breeze, meaning Canova can make the most of her sailing prowess (again cutting down on engine use). Large spaces and good indoor/outdoor flow make her a home away from home, with communal spaces including the large, sheltered cockpit with drop down glass sides. Sw108 Hybrid

First revealed in 2021, the SW108 Hybrid from South African shipyard Southern Wind Shipyard (SWS) is an exciting diesel-electric concept that has been designed with the planet in mind. It is the result of an impressive collaboration between SWS, Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design. Featuring the ‘SWS Diesel-Electric Hybrid System,’ the SW108 Hybrid will allow for efficient consumption of fossil fuels and reduce harmful emissions.

All this is presented in a sleek, elegant and reliable package typical of SWS. Key features include a plus-sized beach club and a garage with room for a 16 ft tender. Sure to appeal to sailors looking for a reliable and comfortable “greener” sailing yacht, the design is what the yard describes as “a more environmentally friendly approach to performance yacht sailing.” The shipyard takes its responsibilities to deliver more eco-friendly yachts very seriously and the SW108 Hybrid will likely set the tone for future designs from SWS.

To the Future…

Now due to be completed in 2025, 640-ft REV Ocean will be the world’s largest research vessel. With construction well underway in Norway, REV Ocean is a state-of-the-art yacht that has been designed to ensure ‘one healthy ocean.’ As a luxury floating laboratory, her impressive facilities will allow her to undertake cutting-edge ocean science. She has an abundance of sustainable features, and her assets will include everything from a deep-diving submarine to a lecture theater for discussing discoveries.

The Arksen 85 — dubbed Project Ocean — the first self-proclaimed “ultimate marine exploration vessel” to be built by Arksen Yachts. Created to travel the world, with a stable, hardy design, the Arksen 85 is intended to explore with low environmental impact. She’s built in an eco-friendly way, with her hull and superstructure made from low-carbon, recycled aluminum. A range of up to 7,000 nm will give her plenty of scope for adventures, and her eco credentials include a solar array option for zero-carbon electrical power and a hybrid propulsion system.

Buying an Arksen yacht offers several bolt-ons such as membership in the Arksen Explorers’ Club, which helps owners make the most of their vessels, and an invitation to join the Arksen Foundation, where owners are invited to pledge 10% of their vessels’ sea time to ocean-exploration projects. The Arksen 85 offers luxurious comfort and large onboard spaces. This first build will include a full beam master suite, media room and children’s cabin. She is due to launch in 2022, and a large portion of her time at sea has already been committed to the Arksen Foundation.

Project AQUA

Project AQUA made headlines around the world when rumors started that she was being built for Bill Gates. This speculation was later dispelled but, in the process, the world got a good look at the 367-ft vessel and so too a glimpse of what the future of yacht design might look like. The work of Lateral Naval Architects in collaboration with Sinot Yacht Design, hydrogen-powered Project AQUA represents how yachting might one day achieve zero carbon usage.

“For Project AQUA we set ourselves an objective of using near-future technology,” explains Simon Brealey, principal mechanical engineer at Lateral. “Liquid hydrogen has the potential to be created from renewable sources via electrolysis and as such can be considered a zero carbon fuel with the only local emissions being water. Project AQUA demonstrates [that] the onboard technology to enable a zero carbon project is ready, and we hope that it acts to inspire superyacht owners, shipyards, the hydrogen infrastructure industry and the wider maritime industry.”

The Sinot team used “an integrated and highly poetic design approach” when creating her: Cascading exterior decks are paired with a minimalist Japanese beach-style interior that provides living spaces in perfect balance with the water on which the vessel sits.

Dutch yard Feadship now has a good number of eco yachts to its name, and 312-ft hybrid yacht Bliss is the most recent to have hit the water. Launched in May 2021, Bliss benefits from the very latest advances in technology with an all-new hybrid propulsion system. De Voogt Naval Architects were heavily involved in the design and engineering of the hybrid system, which will allow the yacht to sail in diesel-electric mode. In a win-win for comfort and for the world, “this package helps to protect the environment and provides premium comfort for all who step aboard,” says Feadship. Bliss also has Polar Code compliance – what better way to connect with the importance of protecting the health of our planet than by coming face to face with the icy majesty of the Polar regions?

Currently owned by founder of Snapchat, Evan Spiegal, Bliss features an exterior design by Jan Schaffers of Studio de Voogt and interior design by Remi Tessier. This team has created an elegant style that they describe as “natural and welcoming, inside and out.” Highlights include nine cabins, a gym and wellness space, a pool and a convertible helideck. Designed for family fun and to see the world this magnificent custom yacht is a timeless triumph.

Eco Explorer

A collaboration between Dutch yard Feadship and French design studio Merveille Yachting, the Eco Explorer concept is described by Feadship as “a genuinely eco-friendly superyacht.” The yacht combines all the best elements of motor and sail yachts in one efficient package. She features a mast system that has fully automated wings twice as powerful as a standard sailing yacht rig, while the use of sail power reduces fuel use as well.

Energy is also harnessed from a trio of onboard solutions including wind turbines, solar panels and underwater turbines. These, together with other reduction elements, add up to the use of an estimated 50-70% less fossil fuel, and more than three times the range of an equivalent boat. The 55-ft beam ensures plenty of space on board, with an inviting interior and vast beach club that includes a 49-ft swimming pool. The perfect yacht for seeing the world guilt-free, “the Eco Explorer is on the forefront of cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technology,” says Feadship.

A mighty 328-ft sailing yacht concept, Vento is the brainchild of Nuvolari-Lenard. First revealed in June 2021 at the Venice Boat Show, this behemoth was created by design duo Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard to be a “manifesto for environmental protection” and a visual appeal to superyacht designers to create truly green yachts. This radical concept will use the wind as its main source of propulsion and its slipstream hull will ensure it moves efficiently through the water. Its Wing Sail sail plan is more efficient than traditional rigs, allowing for better performance. A diesel-electric system with variable speed generators and variable pitch propellors will allow operations to be adjusted to achieve maximum efficiency.

Nuvolari and Lenard both believe that it is not enough to design a yacht that is “greener,” and instead our entire mentalities and attitudes towards yacht design needs to shift. “ Vento speaks to a market sensitive to environmental issues, worried about the future of the marine ecosystem, which is ready to do its part,” they say. Vento is their testimony and, they believe, proof that a truly green yacht needn’t mean compromising on innovative designs and luxurious living.

The size of the 308-ft Project Crystal is an eco yacht option for buyers who can’t let go of the idea of a very large yacht. She, like the rest on this list, has been designed in a way that will allow efficient operations and energy savings. “As with all our designs, the impact of a vessel on its context is crucial — environmental considerations extend from the controllable pitch propellers which maximize efficiency, through the hydrodynamic optimizations of the hull, hybrid power systems and glazing arrangements that minimize solar gain,” says Nick Stark, naval architect at Nick Stark Design.

Project Crystal is named for the distinctive crystalline lattice that forms a striking part of the exterior profile. Designed to be a sanctuary, Project Crystal is a safe and relaxing space that is both beautiful on board and from afar. “We wanted to create an aesthetic that is celebratory,” says Stark. “The lines flow up and across, both lifting our gaze and also guiding it to what is around us: the people, the community and the environment”. The design is able to achieve swift global navigation and she has been crafted with a relentless focus on hydrodynamic fundamentals – the sleek unadorned underwater lines tick the boxes for both fuel efficiency and superb seakeeping. Not to mention she looks pretty exceptional too.

Sunreef 80 Eco

The Sunreef 80 Eco catamaran design is described by Sunreef Yachts as “an eco-responsible luxury craft combining electric propulsion, superyacht living spaces, reliable sailing performance and the latest green technologies in the industry.” The Sunreef 80 Eco is the largest in the yard’s Eco range, which boasts a large number of appealing ‘green’ features. These include state-of-the-art batteries, sustainable interiors, wind generators and smart water management. In fact, the entire Sunreef brand has undergone a central shift and rebrand towards producing “eco luxury” catamarans.

Sunreef Yachts have worked hard on developing their own proprietary solar panel system, which has been integrated into the Sunreef 80 Eco design, allowing for 1,765 sq ft of ultra-light solar panels installed around the vessel. Pairing comfort and green technology, she has been designed for long range offshore cruising in total silence and in harmony with her surroundings. The entire design can be customized to suit her owners, with plenty of light-filled spaces in close proximity to the ocean. The first Sunreef 80 Eco is currently in build and due to make her debut in 2021.

Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) revealed its interpretation of an eco superyacht, the 265-ft Aegir 2.0 . The design house describes it as “the sailing yacht with the lowest possible environmental footprint.” A big claim indeed. The design has a wind-electric propulsion system that recharges her batteries as she sails. This means her range is theoretically infinite – the world will be her oyster. A Dynarig sail plan will ensure excellent performance, while the trimaran hull delivers excellent seakeeping.

Her eco credentials do not mean a sacrifice on comfort as Aegir 2.0 has plenty of luxury features including a swimming pool, beach club space and spacious rooms. A minimalist Scandinavian style interior pairs a subtle color palette with natural materials, complemented by large windows that fill all spaces with light.

Lürssen’s fuel cell yacht

There is little public information available about an exciting new project from German yard Lürssen Yachts, but it certainly warrants a place in this list for the feat of being the yard’s first yacht with fuel cell technology. Now in build, the yacht has been commissioned by a forward thinking and technology driven owner. This project is huge news as it represents a big step towards an emission free Lürssen superyacht. Flanking the traditional generators, the fuel cell will offer many benefits including the ability to anchor for 15 days or cruise 1,000 miles at slow speed with no emissions.

Complementing this new build project, the yard has set up an Innovation Laboratory that will “simulate and test the integration and operation of a Marine Hybrid Fuel Cell System on board a yacht powered by methanol.” Lürssen is certainly looking to the future and has ambitious goals to lead the field in the construction of emission free yachts.

The Code X Yacht

Captain this catamaran across the clear seas and you’ll be the envy of everyone.  The Code X Yacht isn’t just pretty, she’s fast to boot.  Code X is a 48′ catamaran with 1420 horse power under the hood pushing this sexy beast to 80 knots.  If that’s too quick for your speed, take a look at the connecting piece over the catamaran– that solar panel will power an electric motor to 9 knots, a leisurely speed that’s perfect for entertaining sunset guests.  Fast and furious or green conscious, the Code X Yacht is hungry for the waters in your neck of the woods.  [ link ]

Oculus– in latin, the eye.  In this case, the “eye” in this yacht’s nomenclature is centered on the grand eye of the dolphin that inspired this design.  Oculus Yacht is a sea spectacle of the most true order, a shining example of aqua ingenuity in this watery world.   [ link ]

It’s official.  Ride the waters on this one, you’re either a Bond villain or a mad scientist.  The Wallypower 118 Yacht is an aggressive, angular poweryacht with the most progressive design on this list.  There is nothing more stylish on the seven seas than this Wallypower, and if you can prove otherwise, do so in the comments!

The Modern Houseboat by X-Architects

Scoop this modern houseboat out of the water and drop it in the hills of Hollywood, it would appear no different than the mid-century designs that grace that landscape.  The Modern Houseboat by X-Architects is a sea-bound home with the metal structure, the floor-to-ceiling windows that would make the architecture world jealous.  Okay, perhaps it’s not that progressive, but this is one houseboat you cannot ignore.  Lovely… [ link ]

The Sea Shadow Stealth Warship

If you see this one coming, you’re lucky– because it certainly won’t show up on your radar.  The Sea Shadow Stealth Warship is invisible to most radar systems of the 20th century, which is what made it a Navy secret until recently.  This sea-carving catamaran might be yours for a price, at it has faced retirement and is up for consideration by those at the Pentagon.  Can you imagine breaking the waves with this bad ass?  If money is no object, you might just be able to talk the Justice Department into pulling some strings for you… [ link ]

The Sea Phantom by Maritime Flight Dynamics

Does it look like a killer whale with corporate sponsor decals?  It does to us.  Then again, when you start it up, you won’t be laughing.  The Sea Phantom V-10 is a water-hungry sea beast with plenty of performance history.  Designed by Maritime Flight Dynamics, the Sea Phantom was built to reach cruising speed on the open water, then achieve a wing-bound “flight” to skip across the surface with it’s unique aerodynamic design. Gresham wants you to boldly go where no man has gone before—inside its bonkers new explorer yacht. That’s because the shipyard’s latest futuristic concept looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie.

Designed from the inside out––unlike most gigayachts––the 328-foot Thor Explore has a sweeping interior inspired by round, organic shapes that create airy rooms and expansive views of the ocean beyond, thanks to the double-height nautilus windows. To make the main deck appear even larger, it is uniquely constructed with a floating glass floor (supported by exposed structural beams) so passengers can imbibe at the bar as they take in the scenery.

This setting is also home to a sunken seating area––retro in concept but with a contemporary minimalist spin––that appears to float between decks, thanks to that glass floor. It and nearly every other architectural feature inside Thor have curvilinear lines, which are enhanced by the intricate lighting that closely follows nearly every rounded edge. While it illuminates the space, the lighting also adds some much-needed warmth to prevent the decor from being too impersonal.

But what if you need a little privacy—or want to keep the two levels of the main deck separate? Simply flip a switch and the clear glass floor immediately turns opaque, forming an immediate dividing line.

To access the impressive beach club, you must navigate a circular corridor that has a floor-to-ceiling cylindrical aquarium on either side. This allows you to get up close to whatever aquatic life is housed within. Once you arrive at the beach club itself, you’ll be positioned high above the waterline but can enjoy the use of fold-down balconies to have an oceanside view. The club also has a one-of-a-kind tender garage that can be accessed via a large bi-folding glass door.

The garage has enough space for all your toys, including a 41-foot custom tender, hydrofoil speedboat, a two-person submarine, not to mention kite and windsurfing equipment, diving gear, surfboards and jet skis. Even more impressive is the helideck, with its own hangar. For those taking the ice-class-hulled yacht into extreme environments, being able to protect the chopper is critical for safety missions, not to mention activities like heli-skiing.

BOAT rounds up the biggest and best superyacht concepts released in 2021 by shipyards and designers, including Lloyd Werft, Lazzarini Design and Iddes Yachts.

This giant crab inspired 25m solar-powered catamaran concept by Lazzarini Design named Pagurus is capable of becoming amphibious thanks to retractable cylinders at the bottom of the twin steel hulls. When deployed, these lower the yacht by 60cm and allow it to 'crawl' up onto beaches. Elsewhere, the concept features accommodation for eight guests and four crew members, while power comes from dual propellers and twin diesel engines topping out at 24 knots. 

Revealed by German yard Lloyd Werft , the 115 metre explorer concept APEX boasts a massive range of 9,000 nautical miles and "rugged" exterior design, including a bow towering "almost four decks high," according to the yard. Other features include a helipad aft, with a dedicated hangar directly below, and cranes for launching the two tenders. Meanwhile, accommodation is for a total of 22 guests and 48 crew members.

Kurt Strand Design ’s superyacht concept, the 161 metre Norway , was inspired by the “powerful square sails” of Viking ships. Key features include the 96-metre-high carbon fibre Falcon rig masts and the 6000sqm of sails, wrapped in solar cell foil. Boosting the concept’s eco-focused credentials further are its hydrogen power cells which enable Norway to cruise when there is no light. The central mast conceals a “sky elevator”, which carries guests to lofty heights to enjoy impressive ocean views. 

A 78 metre superyacht concept named MM770 was revealed by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design in collaboration with Mark Whiteley . Ready to commence construction at Dutch yard Feadship , the concept features a sun deck with a Jacuzzi and al fresco dining, cinema and 8.8-metre glass-bottomed pool on the main deck. Elsewhere, the concept features a massive 1,700GT interior and a top speed of 17 knots. 

Powered by fuel cell technology and battery banks, Meyer Group's 150m ONE 50 is described as "ultra sustainable" by the yard. Representing the yard' first foray into superyacht design, ONE 50 features six decks, a 20 metre beam and a massive interior volume of 15,000GT.

Unveiled by   Feadship at the 2021 Monaco Yacht Show, the 81.75 metre superyacht concept Pure was designed following "massive client feedback" to the Dutch yard. The result is a yacht boasting a "sculptural exterior profile and open plan interior". The yacht also emphasises that the project could be "built tomorrow with adventurous clients". 

Revealed by Tankoa, the 76 metre superyacht concept Apache features a glass-bottomed swimming pool suspended in the bow. Penned by designer Alberto Mancini , Apache is set to be built from steel and aluminium and features a choice of two propulsion options; either twin CAT or MAN diesel engines, both providing a top speed of 16.5 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

With the capacity to accommodate 22 science laboratories on board, the 300m exploration vessel Earth 300 was revealed by Iddes Yachts. The concept is large enough to host 400 people on board and is designed will unite science and exploration to confront earth’s greatest challenges", according to Iddes Yachts founder Ivan Salas Jefferson.

Featuring a "gaping hole" in its superstructure , the 69m superyacht concept Shape was unveiled by Lazzarini Design. Elsewhere, the design features a glass-bottomed pool suspended over the front deck, or “hole”. The eco-focused concept is also designed to run on entirely “clean energy”, with a hydrogen propulsion system and a solar panel on its sun deck.

The futuristic 110m superyacht concept Now , unveiled by Nicolò Piredda , features a basketball court on the foredeck and a dedicated party deck. The 4135GT interior meanwhile includes accommodation for up to 20 guests, comprising an owner’s stateroom on the private bridge deck, four VIP staterooms on the main deck and four guest cabins on the lower deck. Other features include a 75 square metre cinema and a large heli-lobby.

Kuthiny Baty – amazing pumice cliffs in Kamchatka

Kuthiny Baty, a bizarre curtain of pumice cliffs, is a unique natural monument located about 4 kilometers from the source of the Ozernaya River (Lake Kurilskoye) in Kamchatka .

According to local legend, once, a wise raven Kutkh decided to dry his boats, and that’s why he placed them vertically on the bank of the river. But then he forgot about them, and the boats remained standing there forever.

The main god of Itelmens, indigenous people of Kamchatka, is a raven named Kutkh. And “bat” means a long boat. So “Kuthiny Baty” can be translated as “God Kutkh’s Boats.”

Indeed, these cliffs resemble long boats (like Indian pirogues), which are ready to sail on the first call of their master. This is a very unusual and beautiful place. Kuthiny Baty on Google Maps . Photos by: lusika33 .
