Cardiff Bay, the largest waterfront development in Europe, presents a compelling blend of Wales’ historical maritime legacy and contemporary urban charm. Yachting.Rent recognizes that every sailor seeks a unique experience, and Cardiff Bay offers a mosaic of experiences that promise to satiate the wanderlust of every maritime enthusiast.

Nestled at the mouth of the rivers Taff and Ely, Cardiff Bay’s transformation from a coal port to a bustling waterfront attraction epitomizes the spirit of renewal. Its expansive waters invite sailors to explore a bay that once facilitated the global coal trade. As you sail, the historic Pierhead building stands as a testament to the bay’s past, while the futuristic Wales Millennium Centre symbolizes its vibrant present. The bay offers a calm and sheltered environment, making it perfect for both novice sailors looking to gain confidence and seasoned sailors seeking a relaxed sail. The consistent breeze ensures a steady yet non-intimidating sailing experience, allowing one to savor the bay’s beauty without the usual challenges of unpredictable winds.

Beyond the pure joy of sailing, Cardiff Bay has much more to offer. As you anchor, you’re welcomed by an array of attractions that promise to make your trip memorable. The Cardiff Bay Barrage, an engineering marvel, is not just functional but also a sight to behold, especially during the sunset. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Cardiff Bay

At Yachting.Rent, we believe that every sailing experience is unique, and the vessel you choose plays a pivotal role in shaping that experience. Cardiff Bay, with its serene waters and panoramic views, offers ample opportunities for both sailing boats and catamarans. But the question remains: which is the right choice for your next adventure in this Welsh water wonderland?

Sailing boats, the classic symbols of maritime grace, are the very embodiment of tradition and elegance. Their slender design, single hull, and deep keel provide an intimate connection with the water, making them ideal for those who crave an authentic sailing experience in Cardiff Bay. They offer a balletic dance with the wind, where every gust and shift can be keenly felt, and the thrill of tacking and gybing is unparalleled. Sailing boats also bring you closer to Cardiff Bay’s rich history, echoing the tales of ancient mariners who once navigated these waters. They’re perfect for small groups or couples seeking a more personalized and romantic experience. With Yachting.Rent’s carefully curated fleet of sailing boats, you’re promised an intimate communion with Cardiff Bay, where every ripple tells a story.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their twin hulls and broader decks, are all about stability and space. They provide a distinct vantage point, allowing sailors to view Cardiff Bay from a comfortable and spacious setting. The wider stance ensures minimal tilt, making them especially suitable for families with kids or larger groups. The dual-hull design also offers shallower drafts, allowing you to venture closer to some of the bay’s hidden nooks and crannies. With Yachting.Rent’s selection of state-of-the-art catamarans, you’re promised a blend of luxury, comfort, and panoramic views. If it’s a party, a family gathering, or just a desire for a roomier sailing experience you’re after, the catamaran is your vessel of choice.

In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran in Cardiff Bay hinges on the experience you seek. If it’s tradition, intimacy, and a direct feel of the waters, the sailing boat beckons. If stability, space, and panoramic luxury are on your checklist, the catamaran stands tall. Regardless of your choice, Yachting.Rent assures an unparalleled experience. With our expertly maintained fleet and seasoned crew, we ensure that your voyage in Cardiff Bay, be it on a sailing boat or a catamaran, becomes a cherished memory. After all, in the end, it’s not just about the vessel, but the tales you gather and the horizons you chase.

Cardiff, S.Wales

Cardiff is the Welsh capital city, famous for Rugby, Shirley Bassey & Tom Jones. It is now the Sports Capital, for its thought provoking Millennium Stadium. It has all any visitor could want. Excellent Restaurants, Nightclubs, Pubs, Bars, Opera, Theatres, Cinemas, Museums, Art galleries, Parks, Cultural events and Castles Galore.

Wales might be physically attached to the UK but there's no doubt when you go over the border that you're in a distinctly different place. The Welsh are proud of their land, their language and their culture. The Welsh language - a form of Celtic, is considered to be amongst the oldest languages in Europe.

This is a country of rolling hills, and lush valleys, an ancient Celtic lilting. Wales is often known as the Land of Castles, because there are more than 400 of them dotted all over the country.

Welsh culture is proudly celebrated each year with the Eisteddfod, a celebration of all things Welsh. Visitors to S. Wales will be bowled over by the sheer natural beauty of the landscape. There are no less than three national parks - Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire Coast. Add to that other areas classed as having Outstanding Natural Beauty and it's easy to understand why the principality is a must for lovers of the outdoors.

Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay to be linked by new Tramway

Cardiff Crossrail phrase one - The Urbanists

New plans have been unveiled for a tramway connecting Cardiff Central railway station directly with Cardiff Bay for the first time.

The initial phase of Cardiff Crossrail, undertaken by Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales (TfW), promises to enhance the railway network connecting the city centre with Cardiff Bay, offering substantial benefits to the broader city and region.

Cardiff Crossrail - The Urbanists

The public is invited to participate in a 6-week consultation starting 16th September, and concluding on 27 October 2024. The consultation can be accessed via:  haveyoursay.tfw.wales/cardiff-crossrail

The plan includes the construction of a new two-platform station situated in the southern car park of Cardiff Central railway station, ensuring seamless interchangeability at the station.

The proposed tramway is set to extend from the current southern car park at Cardiff Central Station, passing through Callaghan Square before merging with the existing Cardiff Bay line, leading to Cardiff Bay.

Preliminary 3D design of the new Cardiff Crossrail viewed from street level - The Urbanists

A third platform is being constructed at Cardiff Bay railway station, complementing the second platform currently under development. This expansion is part of the broader transformation of the Cardiff Bay line within the South Wales Metro project .

Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales are seeking feedback on the proposed designs for the new tramway. They are also inviting suggestions for enhancing public spaces along the route to better connect adjacent communities, landmarks, and attractions.

“The Cardiff Crossrail project has been a long-held ambition for a long time and when fully complete will connect some of the most deprived communities in Cardiff to the railway network for the first time.  Subject to funding, the Cardiff Crossrail will eventually run from the northwest of the city, all the way to the east of the city connecting with the proposed Parkway railway station.   To start this process, the first phase of the scheme must be built between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay. This will finally ensure that Butetown is properly connected to the city centre, through the new tramway, providing further capacity for residents and visitors to access the wide range of attractions that Cardiff has to offer. We want the public to engage in the consultation process, so they can give their feedback on the very first phase of this exciting project.”  Cllr De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning & Transport at Cardiff Council

Cardiff Crossrail phrase one - The Urbanists

“Today, in partnership with Cardiff Council, we’ve shared exciting plans for the delivery of a brand-new tramway between Cardiff Central station and Cardiff Bay station. These plans align with work already underway to build a new track on the Cardiff Bay line, which will allow faster and more frequent services using brand-new tram -trains.   Our ambition is that the new tramway will contribute towards a more sustainable transport network for Cardiff, encouraging more people to leave their cars at home and instead choose more sustainable ways to travel.  We want to hear as many thoughts, opinions and questions on the proposals as possible, which will help to inform key decisions on the scheme. Contributions from our communities will help to shape this project so we can deliver a public tramway that people are proud of.”   Dan Tipper, TfW’s Chief Infrastructure Officer

A sequence of drop-in events will provide the public with opportunities to engage with the teams involved, learn more about, and inquire about the proposals.

Yet again more transport investment for Cardiff and nothing for the rest of Wales maybe we should rename transport for Wales to transport for Cardiff

First images show the £100m new tram route that will run through the middle of Cardiff

The first images of a £100m new tram line running from Cardiff Central railway station to Cardiff Bay have been released. The artist impressions, from Cardiff-based architectural firm The Urbanists, coincide with the launch of a public consultation exercise for the project.

The first phase of Cardiff Council ’s ambitious long-term Cardiff Crossrail vision will see a new dedicated two-platform tram station incorporated into Cardiff Central on the current surface car park on its south side. The route would then run through the Callaghan Square office scheme area before joining the existing rail line linking Cardiff Bay to Queen Street Station that runs along Bute Street.

Work on a second platform at Cardiff Bay station at the end of Bute Street is now under way as part of the South Wales Metro rail electrification project. The existing Bay line is also being electrified and upgraded to two tracks. To accommodate Crossrail services a dedicated third platform will be added. The initial plan for phase one of Crossrail was for the tram route, which will use the same tram-train rolling stock being introduced on the Metro for valley services, to extend further into the Bay to a new station at Pierhead Street. While a final budget for the first phase project has yet to be finalised, it is hoped it will not exceed the £100m identified. Extending it to Pierhead Street could cost around £40m. That is now being seen as a next phase Cardiff Crossrail project, subject to securing the necessary funding requirement.

The long-term aim for this element of Crossrail is for it to eventually extend westwards to meet the South Wales Mainline and the proposed Cardiff Parkway station and integrated business park at St Mellons - for which the Welsh Government is still dragging its feet on a planning decision.

A significant part of the cost of the new link from the city centre to the Bay will be highways related to bring the on-street section through Callaghan Square, which will also see new pedestrian and cycle routes and public realm. However, Cardiff Council could move on to enabling work later this year or early next, while the Welsh Government brings forward the necessary rail legislation for the project, via a transport works act order.

Also required, although discussions are understood to be moving in the right direction, is an agreement with Network Rail for the proposed two-platform dedicated Crossrail station to be built on its land immediately south of Cardiff Central. Subject to final agreements between Cardiff Council, Network Rail, Welsh Government and its transport body Transport for Wales, the new tram network to Cardiff Bay could become operational in late 2028.

Earlier this year Cardiff Council appointed engineering and environmental professional services consultancy WSP and construction, property and management consultants Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) to provide programme and cost management services for the project.

superyacht in cardiff bay

The £100m was secured via Cardiff Council’s successful bid to the previous UK Government, through the Levelling Up Fund. A condition of the funding, which is based on four equal instalments of £12.5m from the UK Government over four years, is that the Welsh Government matches it with a further £50m of its own. The Cardiff Bay administration now needs to finalise that funding commitment.

While not yet agreed as a project, a station link connecting Crossrail phase one to the City Line in the west would allow direct services to Cardiff Bay from the valleys - without requiring a change at Cardiff Central. That would significantly enhance the new tram route to the Bay, while also alleviating pressure on Queen Street services from increased valley services generated by the Metro.

A separate new west Cardiff junction is also required to increase the number of services able to run on the city and Coryton Lines in the capital and which have the heaviest population densities on the Metro network . At present the Metro project, while signalling a major upgrade in frequency and number of services from the valleys into Cardiff, will see services on the city and Coryton Lines remaining at just two an hour.

Cardiff Council’s public consultation on its first phase of Cardiff Crossrail will run until October 27. Cardiff Council and TfW are looking for feedback on the proposed designs and are seeking suggestions for improvement.

Cardiff Council’s cabinet member for climate change, strategic planning and transport, Dan De’Ath, said: “The Cardiff Crossrail project has been a long-held ambition for a long time and when fully complete will connect some of the most deprived communities in Cardiff to the railway network for the first time. Subject to funding, the Cardiff Crossrail will eventually run from the northwest of the city, all the way to the east of the city connecting with the proposed Parkway railway station.

This will finally ensure that Butetown is properly connected to the city centre, through the new tramway, providing further capacity for residents and visitors to access the wide range of attractions that Cardiff has to offer. Dan Tipper, Transport for Wales’s chief infrastructure officer, said: “Today, in partnership with Cardiff Council, we’ve shared exciting plans for the delivery of a brand-new tramway between Cardiff Central station and Cardiff Bay station. These plans align with work already underway to build a new track on the Cardiff Bay line, which will allow faster and more frequent services using brand-new tram-trains.

We want to hear as many thoughts, opinions and questions on the proposals as possible, which will help to inform key decisions on the scheme. Contributions from our communities will help to shape this project so we can deliver a public tramway that people are proud of.”

A series of drop-in events will give members of the public opportunities to talk to the teams involved and learn more and ask questions about the proposals. Cardiff Council’s Crossrail vision was published in a white paper in 2019 which outlined integrated transport projects across the city with an indicative price tag of up to £2bn.
