Orion 50 is a 49 ′ 6 ″ / 15.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Gary Mull and built by Ta Shing Yacht Building Ltd. between 1983 and 1987.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

The Orion 50 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is excellent. There is an excellent water supply range.

The planning is a very exciting time, almost as good as gradually seeing your wishes come to life as the build progresses. I don't know about the relative performance sailing differences between the Orion and the Bestevaer. The Bestevaer and I imagine the Orion are custom boats, which means you can specify anything you want. Thinner or thicker aluminium, fixed, lifting or swing with multitude of drafts, different sail plans with aluminium or carbon spars. The ends (bow and stern can be left bare keeping weight at a minimum or fitted out increasing the accommodation) etc etc. These decisions will make more difference to sailing performance than any fundamental difference between the models, which on paper look otherwise very similar. Building a custom yacht is huge commitment in time and so sit down with each and make sure you are comfortable with their approach. You also need to look very carefully at other boats they have built, crawl around in the hidden areas and assess the quality of the . If you are serious, boatbuilders often encourage you to talk directly with the as part of the build process. They will be the best people to discuss the expected performance differences. Good luck. Thank you. 05-09-2021, 16:31   06-09-2021, 20:16   Boat: Custome Open BOC 50' cutter rig when the keel is extended it leaves a slot that acts like a sailing with a bucket tied to it as the slots have proven to reduce the performance of the boats that have swinging keels. I would go for fixed keel enclosed in Aluminium as I have on my boat the lead is encased and keep is one solid structure not independent of the boat's build. In its all about time and finally personal taste. Good luck with your up and coming, exciting adventure into semi custom boat building. PS, one last word, go or the boat with the lightest . As a reference, my boat is a 50' Aluminium, is 8.5 tons. Granted, it does not have a pilothouse, however that should not add too much to the displacement, in my experience I would aim for a design around 10 to 12 tons max 12.5 tons. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The boat equipped with a ketch rig. A ketch rig is generally considered easier to handle, because the sails are smaller, and because it can sail on most points to the wind with one sail completely taken down for repair or while reefing. The sail configuration of a ketch allows for better comfort and stability when sailing downwind or on a broad reach. The Orion 50 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed. The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.98 - 2.08 meter (6.50 - 6.80 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below. The boat may be equipped with an inboard Perkins 4.236 diesel engine at 85 hp (63 kW). Sailing characteristics This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats. What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed? The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed. The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Orion 50 is about 383 kg/cm, alternatively 2147 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 383 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 2147 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch. Criticism helps us to improve. Orion 49 / Explorer The Orion 49 / Explorer has the same hull, keel, rudder and rig as the Orion 49 / Cruiser (design 169). This version has a different deck, cockpit, deckhouse, interior and a different transom with a scope. The assignment was to design a robust and fast family cruising yacht, with a small deck saloon and suitable for sailing in cold regions. Also for this version, we have chosen aluminum, partly for its robust looks like (this aluminum is unpainted) and partly because aluminum is an extremely solid and lightweight construction material. Because of the keel is vertically retractable, it’s possible to sail with various drafts, wherein said steering characteristics remain the same. Exterior This version of the Orion 49 has a smaller cockpit with one pedestal. Two winches are in the centre of the cockpit for tne main- and jibsheet.  The seats have a good backrest and sit comfortably. The entire cockpit is kept as low as possible, to give the crew in heavy seas security. For that reason, there is also created sufficient space behind the helm.
