The Yacht Brokers Association of America, Inc. – YBAA - was founded in 1920 and exists to unite Yacht Sales Professionals throughout North America in order to: establish, promote and enforce high standards of professional competence, character and ethical conduct; foster public recognition of, and support for, YBAA and its member brokers; facilitate cooperation among member brokers; and, enhance each member's success.

YBAA defines a Yacht Sales Professional (YSP) as an individual who conforms to industry standards of skill, competence and character in service to their clients. As a member of a recognized yacht broker trade association and through continuing education and compliance with established Codes of Ethics, a YSP maintains their expertise throughout their professional career.

YSPs may represent a buyer and/or seller as a broker in the sale of a recreational yacht, or may be the representative of a yacht dealer or yacht manufacturer in the sale of a vessel. Those who attain, and maintain, their credentials as a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) further demonstrate their ongoing commitment to their profession.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORMS

Corporate Membership Application - For brokerage firms and their eligible brokers who have been in business for at least one year. Provisional Application - For brokerage firms in business for less than one year. Applicants must be referred by a YBAA member and attendance at a YBAA conference or seminar is required within the first year.   Affiliate Membership Application - For companies that provide services or products of interest to yacht brokers and who wish to support the enhancement of the yacht brokerage profession.

For individuals interested in entering the yacht brokerage profession for the first time, we recommend working for an established firm, ideally a member of YBAA. The Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents’ (ABYA) is the association that represents professional yacht brokers, dealers and also new boat sales people. ABYA members must have demonstrated a knowledge and application of the necessary legal, financial and tax documentation required in order to pass on good legal title when buying a vessel in order to become a member.

The brain-child of the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA), the CPYB certification program is now lead by a consortium of seven leading associations representing yacht brokers in North America and abroad.  Learn more about the history of the CPYB certification. 

Endorsed Brokers

The CPYB program is pleased to extend its service to the industry by offering the opportunity for qualified North American brokerage firms and dealerships to earn recognition as a CPYB Endorsed Brokerage . A qualified brokerage firm or dealership is defined as an entity or entities advertising under a common name in North America. Just as the program currently recognizes qualified yacht sales professionals, the Endorsed Brokerage program recognizes brokerage firms and dealerships that are committed to the high standards of the CPYB program and who support their YSPs’ investment in attaining and maintaining their CPYB certification.

Eligibility Requirements

If you have been a yacht broker for two-years and work or are affiliated with a Brokerage House that follows strict ethical business practices, you are candidate eligible.  Becoming a CPYB signals to your buyers and those in the profession that you have broad-based competencies and skills that puts you in an elite group.

What Is The MLS?

The member listing service (MLS) is a database established by our industry’s leading professional yacht broker associations (PYBA) to collect, control & provide data about vessels for sale and is exclusively for yacht sales professional use. The MLS allows yacht brokers to see one another’s listings with the goal of connecting buyers to sellers through a yacht sales professional (YSP).

• The MLS is a database established by cooperating yacht brokers to provide data about vessels for sale.
• An MLS allows brokers to see one another’s listings of vessels for sale with the goal of connecting buyers to sellers through a YSP.
• The MLS helps yacht brokers connect by consolidating and sharing information while sharing commissions.
• Controlling the MLS database allows PYBAs to control how this data is used in public markets.

YSPs receive free access to the MLS or pay a small fee for co-brokerage data feeds. In return, they receive information on vessels for sale, including listing details, photos, and descriptions of each vessel. The MLS can only be accessed by yacht sales professionals. The MLS follows the rules set out by the participating professional yacht broker associations.

Benefits Of The MLS

As a result of collective YSP participation, the MLS provides more exposure to the selling broker and more options to the broker representing the buyer. In return, both brokers may receive a commission on the sale. The MLS allows competing brokers to work together toward a common goal of helping buyers find their desired vessels and helping sellers sell their vessels through the use of YSP services.

• Prospective buyers gain access to numerous listings directly from YSPs, while sellers get connected to buyers through a YSP via… a. “YSP Only” access to the MLS database b. Secure data feeds YSPs can use to advertise MLS database listings c. Secure webhooks to integrate MLS data elements with external systems to assist YSPs with sales & marketing efforts (ie BoatDox, CRM, etc)
• Online advertising websites containing listings can pull data directly from the official PYBA MLS database.
