Intrepid Boats History
Intrepid got its start in Opa-locka, Florida, eventually moving and expanding to two facilities in Florida: a manufacturing facility in Largo and a Sales Center in Dania. Intrepid Powerboats has been exceeding expectations since it first launched itself into the spotlight in 1983, with the introduction of its 30-foot open formed powerboat, the world’s first vessel formed with the Vacuum Bagging/Resin Infusion method. Pioneered by Intrepid, this method put the new company on the map by delivering greater strength and rigidity while shedding 20 to 40% of the weight in boats built with traditional materials and techniques.
Intrepid’s artisans have continually offered new innovations over its 30 year-history, such as incorporating hand-laid, uni- and multi-directional fiberglass fabrics and Kevlar construction process for a lighter, stronger hull and more fuel-efficient ride, and powering their entire 14 vessel line-up by outboard motors. By using an external propulsion force, Intrepid is able to perform maintenance and make repairs to their engines swiftly and effortlessly, resulting in less time spent off the water. In 2011, Intrepid formed a partnership with Seven Marine, maker of the world’s most powerful outboard motors, to produce the 327 Center Console Tournament Edition Fishboat. Intrepid continues to practice leadership through innovation, producing versatile fiberglass vessels completely customized for diving, fishing, or cruising – whatever use their owners can imagine!

Overview [ edit ]
Intrepid Powerboats is a custom luxury powerboat manufacturer and retailer with a manufacturing plant based in Largo, Florida and a Sales Center located at Harbour Towne Marina in Dania, Florida. [1]
The company slogan of “One of a kind. One at a time.” underlines their approach to boat design, production and customer service. Intrepid offers sport yachts, walk around cruisers and center console boats from 27 to 40 feet in length. [2] The vessels are custom-rigged to accommodate activities such as fishing, diving and day-cruising, as well as overnight outings.
History and Innovation [ edit ]
Intrepid entered the marine market in 1983 with a new 30-foot open-formed powerboat, the world’s first vessel built with a wood-free core composite system enhanced by a vacuum-bagging and resin infusion molding process. [3] Power & Motoryacht reports the method delivers greater strength and rigidity to Intrepid hulls while also shedding weight, which results in faster speeds, superior performance, and increased fuel efficiency. [4]
Intrepid’s powerboats were also the first to incorporate a large signature “step” in the forward panel of each hull, delivering a more stable ride. This transverse step is matched to the hull shape and the offset hull panels create more lift aft than at the step itself, so the boat runs with its bow up, keeping it drier than the flat running angle of other stepped hulls, which have hull panels at equal declivity. [5] A tulip-shaped (convex or flam) bow entry adds buoyancy to the vessel and complements the offset panels in the signature large-step hull design. [6]
Since 1983, Intrepid has continued evolving its nautical design, engineering and fabrication techniques. The company also claims several industry firsts, including being the first to prototype a dive door and the first to create dive doors that penetrated the hullside. [7]
Other Intrepid manufacturing techniques include the precision engineering of hand-laid uni- and multi-directional laminates to withstand the stresses and loads of rough seas [8] , and the use of knitted fiberglass cloths that provide a 20% increase in tensile strength over the woven fabrics commonly used throughout the industry. To further guarantee performance and satisfaction, Intrepid powerboats are individually tested and inspected, then sanded, buffed and polished by hand before they leave the factory. [9]
Television Features [ edit ]
The company was featured in a digital television series, “Intrepid Powerboats on the Water,” which was produced by Revma Media in association with Power Media Solutions and aired for 3 seasons. [10]
Intrepid Powerboats can also be seen on the Netflix original series “The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes” in Season 2 Part B “Norway” episode. The episode was produced by a Wall to Wall West Production, a Warner Bros. Television Production UK Company for Netflix in association with the BBC. [11]

According to a Tampa Bay Fox affiliate, Intrepid’s Largo, Florida production facility employs more than 300 designers, engineers and craftspeople delivering approximately 115 customized outboard powerboats and sports yachts per year. [9] In 2016, Trade Only Today reported the purchase of Intrepid by JDG Capital, a Dallas-based company led by David Gillikin. [12]
In the domestic marine manufacturing market, Intrepid Powerboats’ competitors include Boston Whaler, Princess Yachts and Tiara Yachts.
