About Model Boat Pond

I discovered Model Boat Pond after stumbling upon a public body of water via Google Satellite one day. Determined to visit as many ponds and lakes as I can in San Diego County, I set out to visit it!

mission bay model yacht pond

Everyone was friendly and happy to have me hang out and watch. This pond is located within a beautiful little nook right next to Vacation Isle.  This is a great starting point for a beautiful walk.  So many scenic points of interest in such a small area.

History of Model Boat Pond

It turns out this pond has quite an extensive history, dating back to 1939! The pond was originally built into the Mission Bay master plan in 1939 as a continuation of a long standing program with the City Schools of San Diego of building Model Boats and competing between schools on the pond.

mission bay model yacht pond

Once the club was formed the program was eventually cut off, by the Argonauts continued their gatherings.

mission bay model yacht pond

In the 50’s both radio-controlled model boats at the Model Yacht Club shared the pond. With the demise of the San Diego Model Yacht Club, the Argonauts became the only organization using the pond and today considers the pond its home water.

Mission Bay Guide: Vacation Isle

San Diego’s Mission Bay is one of the city’s prime attractions.  There are all kinds of water-based activities and 27-miles of shoreline.  This is our guide to Vacation Isle located in the center of Mission Bay.

  • Location: 1600 Vacation Rd, San Diego, CA 92109
  • Parking: Large parking lots at Ski Beach. Smaller parking lots at North Cove Beach and Vacation Isle Park
  • Facilities: Restrooms at Ski Beech and Vacation Isle Park
  • Lifeguards: None
  • Rentals: Paradise Point has a rental location. Ski Beach may have seasonal rentals.  Rental facilities also available directly across the bridge at Dana Landing by SeaWorld.

NOTE: Pictures in the original article were taken during summer 2020.  Updates include pictures taken during winter 2021 at low tide.

Jump Ahead To

Vacation Isle is a man-made island in the center of Mission Bay.  Ingraham Street runs through the middle and connects the island to Dana Landing and SeaWorld in the south and Crown Point/Pacific Beach in the north.

The island can be divided into four areas.  Ski Beach takes up the eastern half of the island with Paradise Point, North Cove Beach and Vacation Isle Park on the western half.  The entire island is less than half a mile in each direction.

As its name implies Ski Beach is a prime location for jet skiing and water skiing.  There is plenty of parking in the large parking lots where parking spaces are designed for vehicles with trailers.  Of course, there is a boat ramp.

The map here shows the water ski area .

This is also a great area for families with small children.  There are restrooms, plenty of grassy area and playgrounds.

The downside is that Ski Beach is designed primarily for motor sports.  This is not the place for swimming, paddle boarding or kayaking.  Very small children can wade into the water but that is about all.

Ski Beach

North Cove Beach

North Cove Beach is one of the most secluded areas of Mission Bay.  The beach is located off a side street at the entrance to Paradise Point resort.

There is a small parking lot and the beach itself is fairly small.  However, it is generally not very crowded and the cove is away from the activity of Mission Bay.

Most of the horseshoe shaped beach area is part of the Paradise Point Resort beach area.

North Cove Beach

North Cove Beach is also a popular spot for fishing near the bridge that connects Vacation Isle to Crown Point.

North Cove Beach

Vacation Isle Park

Vacation Isle Park is a large grassy park in the southwest corner of Vacation Isle.  This is a great place for family picnics, but it is not a beach area.

The Model Yacht Pond or Model Boat Pond is a key feature of the area.  As the name implies it is a place to sail model boats.

Vacation Isle Park

Paradise Point Resort

Paradise Point Resort is one of San Diego’s most attractive lodging options.  The resort takes up much of the western end of Vacation Isle.

Paradise Point has several dining options.  The Barefoot Bar and Grill has always been a popular spot even for locals.

Model boats make a big splash in a small pond

Terry L. Wilson

Every Saturday morning a fleet of classic ships invade Mission Bay to parade up and down the Model Boat Pond. These floating works of art range from a two-masted schooner, an aircraft carrier, and a turn-of-the-century steam-powered paddle boat, all built to scale.

“All of the boats in our club are built off of real boats and the dimensions are scaled down to create a replica of that craft,” said Kurt Sellen, vice commodore of scale for power boats. “For example, this tug boat I’m holding is 1/24th scale, meaning for every inch that’s 24 inches full size; and we use a hand-held remote control to guide our power boats around the pond.”

The model boat club is named Argonauts, after the sailors in Greek mythology. However these modern-day Argonauts aren’t searching for Jason’s Golden Fleece, they are putting their vessels to task just for fun. The club has three divisions: Scale, Sail, and Power, each has its vice commodore to oversee that specific venue.

“We have a division for the sail guys that come out on Tuesdays and Thursdays to do free sailing,” said Sellen. “These boats have no remote control equipment, they set a weathervane on the ship and set a course across the pond and back, just like it was done in the old days.”

4

Everyone is welcome to join the Argonauts as they cruise the friendly waters of the Model Boat Pond. The members love talking about their boats and their history.

To get the public more interested in their club the Argonauts are adding a new event each month. That includes Tug Boat Tug Of War, Races, Obstacle Course skill run, and a scene right out of D-Day.

“We have an event called Day Of Grey, a military-themed event with battleships, carriers, landing craft along with an assortment of navy boats,” said Sellen. “It’s as close as you can get to being in a battle without going to war. Then in December, we have one of our most popular events, the annual Parade of Lights. Our boats are decorated with Christmas lights; it’s our most popular event and draws many people.”

1

The San Diego Argonauts have a must-see event coming to the pond Aug. 2-11. They are hosting four countries to compete in their 15th consecutive Tri-Annual Race Week Regatta.

The Argonauts is an International organization dating back to before 1939. Sellen has taken on the job of researching the history of the club and the pond it calls home. But that’s another story for another time.

The Model Boat Pond is located on Vacation Isle, between Vacation Isle East and Vacation Isle West, just south of the Paradise Point Resort & Spa.

Vacation Isle Park

Pin Icon

In the middle of Mission Bay Park , a man-made body of water in San Diego, sits Vacation Isle. This little island is home to Paradise Point Resort & Spa and Ski Beach , but the southern third of the island is known as Vacation Isle Park, and it’s a fabulous place to spend a day with your family or friends.

Vacation Isle Park is a little different from some of the other parks because it’s divided into two halves, east and west, and in the center is a little treasure that puts this city park on many people’s must-see list: an unassuming rectangular pond with a unique activity.

Explore SeaWorld and SAVE

SeaWorld San Diego

There’s a variety of activities included with the Go City San Diego pass such as: The San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, LEGOLAND, SeaWorld, Hiking Tours, Whale Watching, Museum Tours, Speed Boat Adventures & more!

Worth the Trip to Vacation Isle Park

Grassy areas, fire pits & gazebos.

Vacation Isle East isn’t so different from Vacation Isle West; these two parts of the park both have wide grassy areas that are perfect for picnics or a game of Frisbee or cornhole, while the sandy beaches are beloved by sun worshipers who love to lay out and soak up the rays – with regular application of sunscreen, of course.

Both sides of the park have picnic tables in the grass, and on the beach, fire rings dot the sand for safe bonfire spots. A beloved nighttime activity with San Diego beachgoers is roasting marshmallows at the fire rings and it is part of both our Unique Things to Do in San Diego and our Best Things to do in San Diego at night lists!

The park also has shade trees to give you a break from the sun. In Vacation Isle East, however, there is a gazebo with picnic tables that you may be able to reserve for larger gatherings.

Beaches at Vacation Isle Park

The beaches of Vacation Isle Park are lovely, to be sure, but they do not afford you much in the way of water access; in fact, they have a rocky barrier that prevents easy entry. Needless to say, this is not the beach you go to for swimming or boogie boarding, but it is a beautiful place to see SeaWorld San Diego or Downtown San Diego off in the distance. You can also stroll along the sand to watch the clouds or birds go by.

Pond at Vacation Isle Park

But let’s go back to that pond in the center of the park, which is a big draw for visitors. The pond is used for racing model yachts and sailboats, and these are not kids’ toys we are talking about. Model boat enthusiasts bring their hand-crafted remote-controlled boats for races, and the boats themselves are a marvel to behold.

On Saturday mornings, the yachts are out in full force, while the afternoons are better for sailboats to take advantage of the breeze. A hobby group known as the San Diego Argonauts has a calendar of events you can check out to plan your visit when races take place.

Stay at Paradise Point Resort & Spa

Located just next to Vacation Isle Park is the gorgeous Paradise Point Resort & Spa . The Paradise Point Resort & Spa boasts private beaches on Mission Bay and 5 different swimming pools on its huge property. There is even a bar / restaurant that has a dock where guests or visitors can dock their boats while they eat at Barefoot Bar & Grill.

How to Get There & Parking

Free Parking

As with much of San Diego, getting to Vacation Isle Park isn’t difficult. Just take Sea World Drive off I-5 and follow it to Ingraham Street. This street runs through the length of Vacation Isle, and the Park is on the opposite side of the street from Ski Beach .

Both East and West each have a separate parking lot, and with a capacity of around 200 cars for each side, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting a space. Keep in mind that beautiful sunny days and model boat races will bring the masses, so plan to get there early to find a parking spot.

Fun Facts & Tips

Not a camping park.

This is not a camping park, so do not plan to stay overnight. The park operates between 4am and 10pm, so you still have plenty of time to watch the sunset or enjoy s'mores around the bonfire.

Dogs Allowed but only During Certain Hours

Yes, you can bring your dog with you, but not between the hours of 9am to 6pm. If you do plan to take your pup in the early morning or evening, be sure to have it on a leash and pick up after it so that the park is clean for everyone.

Not a Swimming Beach

Since this is not a swimming beach, it does not have a lifeguard on duty. There are not any playgrounds in either East or West, but that doesn’t mean your children won’t enjoy a day at the park.

Our Favorite Secret Lakes & Ponds in San Diego

kid holding brother in front of a pond

San Diego is known for its vacation-worthy beaches , but you don’t always have to go to the ocean to play in the water (or be forced to deal with all that sand). If you go inland and look between our hills and canyons you’ll find tons of freshwater lakes and ponds that are splash-worthy for a fun-filled day. Scroll down for our favorite in-the-know watering holes (until now that is) that tend to be less crowded and more secluded—you might even be the only ones there! Plus we’ve paired each waterway with a food hot spot nearby to grab some coffee, sandwiches or grab a box of doughnuts from one of our favorite shops for your lakeside adventures.

Evan’s Pond

mission bay model yacht pond

This one is at the top because it’s one of the least-known ponds on this list (until now that is). It’s right across the street from its more famous “Big Brother” Lake Miramar and it’s tucked behind the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library next to its parking lot. It’s a small pond with a cute flat trail that will take littles about 20 minutes to walk around—longer if they stop to feed the ducks or throw rocks into the water.

Insider Tip: The library sells duck food from its gift shop inside, cash only.

Food Hot Spots: Stop by Gong Cha for teas and boba, or Somisomi ( one of our favorite ice cream shops in San Diego ) for soft serve or Paris Baguette for pastries and coffee.

Discovery Lake

mission bay model yacht pond

Plan to spend several hours here because your kids won’t want to leave (making hitting up that food hot spot below even more clutch). After you walk or stroll on the lower flat paved loop trail for about 40 minutes (or you can take the upper hiking trail), you can choose to visit the small fishing dock, the new forest-themed playground or run around in the splash pad.

Food Hot Spots: You’ll discover a new favorite at the Old California Coffee House & Eatery , which has vegan and gluten-free options and even fire pits outside.

Discovery Lake 650 Foxhall Dr. San Marcos

Lower Otay Lake

Get inspired at this Olympic-approved lake which serves as the training lake for rowing sports from the U.S. Olympic Training Center across the street. Even if you don’t have Olympic aspirations, you can rent a boat and feel like one for the day. You can also rent fishing gear and buy live bait from the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company on-site to fish from the dock. They also sell ice cream, drinks, snacks and picnic supplies. Bring your bikes or go for a long walk on the quiet out-and-back trail that hugs the lake.

Insider Tip: The lake is only open on Wed, Sat & Sun and it's closed the 2nd Wed. of each month.

Food Hot Spots: Starbucks, IHOP and Islands Burgers are all nearby.

Lower Otay Lake 1500 Wueste Rd. Chula Vista Online: sandiego.gov

Model Yacht Pond

Bring your remote-controlled water toys to zip around on this hidden pond on Mission Bay. It’s primarily used for sailing small model yachts, so while it seems inviting, there is no swimming allowed here. However, a model yacht club meets regularly, and if you’re lucky enough to be here when they are, it’s a really nice group, and some will even let your kids sail their boats for a few minutes! When the kids are done watching, there are trees to climb, sandy beaches nearby with shaded picnic tables, bathrooms and fire pits for bonfires.

Food Hot Spot: Walk next door to Paradise Point Resort to grab a coffee from their Island Grinds Coffee shop or order pizza from their Barefoot Bar & Grill on the water. This is also a fun spot to walk around, find their native bird habitat lagoons, buy duck food from their gift shop and climb to the top of the lookout tower.

Model Yacht Pond 2800 Ingraham St. Mission Bay Online: sandiego.gov

Heritage Park Pond

Spend the entire day here with over nine options for fun! Choose from the playground, skate park and walking trails to run out some energy. For more action, bring a ball for the basketball courts or soccer field or a frisbee for the large open spaces. Grab a picnic table for lunch and use the barbecue grills and bathrooms. Check the schedule for concerts at the amphitheater or recreation classes at the community center. To keep it simple, kids will love just running around the hills and walking around the duck pond. When you need a break from all the activity, walk across the street for lots of food options.

Food Hot Spots: Walk across the street to DK Che Fruit for smoothies, raspados and tortas.

Play at the only natural lake in San Diego County with loads of activities to choose from. Start at the playground near the library or hit the skate park, walk or bike around the loop trail that circles the lake, and then go find the butterfly garden. If you’re feeling sporty, bring your rackets for the tennis courts, play catch at the softball fields or throw some horseshoes in the pits. You’ll also find 17 fitness stations for a free workout on the southwestern part of the lake. Kids will enjoy doing the TRACK Trails program, where you complete an educational scavenger hunt and log them online for prizes. Check the park ranger schedule online to go for a guided hike.

Food Hot Spot: Mary’s Donuts & Coffee is a nearby locals favorite and their lunch and breakfast sandwiches are also a big hit.

Lindo Lake 12660 Lindo Ln. Lakeside Online: sdparks.org

Tucked behind some office buildings and next to the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, you’ll find this quaint little lake that’s more of a pond. It’ll take kids about 10 minutes to run around it, but they’ll probably go around a few times. Bring little trikes and scooters for them to practice on the flat paved loop around. Stop to find the koi fish, turtles and ducks swimming around. There’s also a small waterfall that’s fun for kids to watch and a little bridge to run over next to the Veteran’s Memorial. Trees keep this area shaded and it’s a great picnic spot, so stop at a nearby restaurant or BYO lunch (no bathrooms here so plan ahead).

Food Hot Spot: Starbucks and Peet’s Coffee are nearby and lots of restaurant options down the street.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lakehouse Resort (@lakehousehotel)

Lake San Marcos

Rent a boat on this small private lake for a relaxing morning or early evening family time. You can rent electric Duffy boats or pontoons for cruising or fishing. If you want more of a workout, you can rent SUPs, kayaks or pedal boats. The water is calm because there are no wakes, so it’s ideal for little kids and beginners to enjoy. If you want someone to row you around, hire a guided gondola tour from Black Swan Gondola Company, they might even sing to you!

Pro Tip: Turn this into a relaxing stay-cation and get a room at the modern Lakehouse Hotel .

Food Hot Spots: Eat dockside at the Amalfi Marina Bar for out-of-this-world pizza or walk across the street to D’liteful Chocolat for crepes, breakfast and of course chocolate.

Now that we’re all comfortably settled into the rhythm of summer, let’s do a classic summer thing and go to a fair!

The Ossipee Valley Fair starts today and runs through Sunday. We especially love the Farmer Olympics because the hay bale toss and blind wheelbarrow obstacle course competition is fierce. Ray Routhier has details about Ossipee Valley and several others fairs happening this summer in Bangor, Waterville and Acton, among other locales.

Need a break from standard-issue hot dogs? We love them too, but sometimes a new twist is just what your taste buds need. Ray Routhier stopped by Gunnar’s Icelandic Hot Dogs cart . If you like what you read, you can find it parked from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at Apres in Portland, then on the roof of Bayside Bowl on Friday and Saturday evenings.
