Is it better to hire a Cook or a Hostess?

Bareboat yacht charter in Croatia  also provides multitude of options to hire various crew members at skippered charters ( cook and hostess ). Please find below which option suits your holiday style better and what are the assignments they do.

1. Chartering a Hostess

Guests usually book our hostess when they want to have a relaxing and a care-free sailing holiday in Croatia. She can perform various tasks, on board and off board, that you usually have to take care alone when you hire a bareboat sailing charter in Croatia . Our crew is all fluent in English and sometimes also multilingual. Together with our local skipper, they will make sure that your cruising adventure in Croatia is and indulging and a one-of a-kind experience.

Basic assignments of a hostess

  • keeping all areas on yacht clean and tidy
  • handling the provisioning throughout the trip (shopping for supplies, stocking boat lockers before and during your trip)
  • she prepares and serves two light meals daily (breakfast and one simple lunch). Extra meals are option with an additional fee.
  • washes the dishes, cleans the galley and salon

A Tip: We advise to transfer her some APA money (advanced provisioning allowance) so that she can supply your boat before arrival.

2. Hiring a Cook/Chef

The general assignment for cook on board is to prepare 3 meals a day , considering the client's preferences and what kind of food do they want. Usual fee for cook starts at  170€ per day . However, it can vary and mostly depends the boats size and number of the guests aboard.

That depends on the level of the tasks, requests and how many guests are there to cater. Her basic fee is 130€ per day and can go up to 180€ . This fee does not include gratuity nor the meals for the crew; They can join you for meals or allow 30€ pocket money per crew member per day.

Where does a hostess sleep?

The front bow cabins on catamarans are usually occupied with the crew, that is why we recommend to charter sailing yacht with 2 separate crew cabins. Most of the sailing catamarans in Croatia have such a layout. Sometimes, the crew can also sleep in the salon, but it is not something we advise, since everyone needs time to rest, so they can give you their best during the day.

It is also customary to take care of the crew's meals on your sailing trip. Feel free to invite your crew to join you at the dinner, they will be more than happy. If you wish to dine in privacy, they can east separately.

A Tip: When you hire a hostess you already have 2 meals included. That gives you extra time to explore the islands where you can dine in a local restaurant your crew will be happy to recommend. Here you can taste Dalmatian delicacies in fisherma's tavern called "konoba" - a must try!

Best time for sailing in Croatia is definitively in summer months June July and August when the weather is simply glorious and everything is in full swing.

Is it better to charter a sailboat or a catamaran?

It is all up to your expectations and your budget.

In Croatia you can charter almost everything that floats. To rent a sailing boat in Croatia with skipper assures you to discover the most beautiful islands at your own pace and with a flexible route itinerary. It is considered the most genuine and fashionable way of exploring Adriatic coast.

On sailboats you mostly depnd on winds, but sailing yacht will give you more sailing pleasures with minimum fuel consumption. Catamarans are wider, more stable, and extra comfortable. Commodity however, also means higher rental price, larger costs on fuel and marina fees.

When it comes to quality of staying on board, catamarans ensure more privacy and space. Most of the catamarans for chartering in Croatia have cozy flybridge that provides extra places to chill or sunbathe. If you want to move faster and your main concern is not large fuel consumption, simply hire a motor yacht.

If you think green, rent a sailboat

Less consumption means less exhaust into the sea. Especially if you are an active explorer, you will certainly try to stay most of the time under sails. Hiring a sailboat in Croatia is definitively more exciting, fun and authentic holiday experience with an opportunity to gain some sailing knowledge and participate in various activities during your yacht charter week.

Choosing a sailing boat to suit your travelling style and budget

To narrow your choice, you should first estimate how much space do you need and how high can you stretch. Larger the group, bigger the boat, bigger the yacht, larger the cost. When you plan  sailing trip with children , catamaran might be a better choice. If you stay on a budget, a sailing yacht with 2 steering wheels and bathing platform should do. Usually 2 families rent one catamaran to divide the costs. One hull for one family.

How long does a sailing trip last?

Croatia sailing charter runs on weekly basis from Saturday to Saturday. However, in shoulder season (September, May, October, June ) short sailing trips are also possible. To explore Croatia's coastline highlights and visit the most beautiful secluded treasures of the Dalmatian coast, we recommend to book one of our  7 day private sailing cruises .

Can you swim in Croatia in September?

September  and October are the perfect months for a relaxing sailing cruise in Croatia . The sea temperatures are pleasant for swimming and still above 20 o (70F). With abundance of sun (especially on the islands) the air keeps constant 25 o (77F) during the day almost until late October. Expect lower yacht rental prices, less crowds on city streets and ports, maritime traffic is lower and you can always get a free berth in marina.

What should I bring on a yacht charter?

With plenty of sunny days and mild Med. climate, Croatia is among sunniest European destinations. Summertime on Adriatic is simply glorious. Sun-soaked Dalmatian islands are literally bathing in sunbeams, while the air is dry and the sea warm. If your sailing trip is in summer season, simply bring your summer wardrobe.

It is highly recommended to bring your soft handbag or a duffel bag  or rucksack instead of a plastic suitcase to gain more space in your cabin. Please read about the Sail Croatia Packing List for newbies and  remember to pack light.

Need help with booking?

Almost all navigators sailing on yacht charter in Croatia have certainly come across the idea to hire a yacht with a skipper. Most of us probably had similar initial navigation experiences.

On bareboat yacht charter we made up a crew including someone with more or less sailing experience and we set out to the sea. Perhaps we had some theoretical knowledge, but we lacked practical skill.

On most of our first sailings we had to cope with torn sails, our limbs full of bruises, entangled ropes and similar problems. Even later on, the crews sailing a week or two per year, face some difficulties in the first days, taking into account that over the years they hire different vessels which they do not have the opportunity to get used to.

Skippered yacht charters and sailing holidays in Croatia

Boat charter with a professional skipper is definitely an advantage for an inexperienced crew. As a rule, most nautical beginners predominantly have theoretical knowledge gained in the courses for obtaining a sailing licence. A week or two of navigation under skipper's instructions will help to get some good knowledge of the navigation technique and optimum exploitation for your next sailboat rental, catamaran charter or motor yacht charter experience. You can also yacht charter Croatia with crew for this purpose.

In subsequent years, such a crew will be able to sail alone without undue worries. Even more skilled skippers and crews may undergo a few days long training course of regatta sailing under the guidance of a skipper in order learn how to exploit the capabilities of vessels as well as possible.

NCP & mare can provide charter sailing boats for sporting sailing and it is also possible to attend an international sailing course organized by RYA (Royal Yachting Association). For more guidance about which boat to choose, for your next boat trip in Croatia, based on your preference and needs, read our article on how to choose the right boat for your next yacht charter holidays .

Croatia yacht charter with skipper for a safer experience

Safety while sailing the Croatian coast should certainly be a priority. Every navigator must follow the weather forecast while experienced skippers can assess the threat of an approaching storm or other major changes of weather according to the situation in the air.

Due to the weather conditions, the Adriatic Sea can be very insidious and is considered to be a dangerous sea. As part of the Mediterranean Sea, it is full of bays and creeks, surrounded by bulks of land. That's why storms can develop faster and more unpredictably than in the oceans. Summers, however, offer longer periods of nice weather but when the weather changes, the storms are so much more severe.

In view of good sailing tour in Croatia we also need to know the wind conditions in the Adriatic.

In summer, most winds are weak, except the good sailing winds in the area of outer islands. In particular the maestral can become fairly strong in the open. It is a sign of good weather and if it does not blow it may predict the worsening of the weather.

The sirocco is less common in summer and it usually decreases to no more than 7 Beauforts.

The bora wind is very dangerous because it often strikes like a bolt from the blue, with no signs, in good weather and at high air pressure. Skilled skippers know very well that even on the lee side of the islands, the higher ones, the situation is extremely dangerous because the winds rise and become even stronger, unlike the lower islands. Therefore, a seasoned skipper takes care of firm anchoring and/or an adequate mooring. Sailing in the bora wind on the lee side of the islands and of the coast is also rather demanding despite lower waves because the gusts of the wind may tear the sails.

It is useful to know all such things. Nowadays, in the Internet Age, it is fortunately very easy to follow detailed weather forecasts for navigators, such as published at meteo.hr or at windfinder.com . These forecasts are fairly reliable for at least 24 hours, but also for up to 3 days.

Depending on the weather forecast and with the help of a skipper on a yacht you will find an ideal sailing route for amusing yacht tour as well as peaceful bays for swimming and overnight stays.

Usually, the holiday crew is made up of friends or family members. Often only one person is more or less experienced and capable to operate the vessel. However, it is essential for safe operation of a vessel that there are at least two experienced persons on board. It turns out particularly important in the event of more difficult weather conditions. It is invaluable to have on board a reliable person that can secure safety and is able to take appropriate measures in any situation.

When taking your family on Croatia yacht trip you wish everybody to relax and to enjoy. A skipper can secure your safety in any weather conditions, he will take care of the boat while you are diving, swimming, playing with children or going on a trip to the mainland. He can help you build an ideal itinerary for your unforgettable vacation. During your voyage he will find for you the most beautiful bays where you will enjoy bathing and other marine delights.

Twin skippered sailing holidays for more fun

Moreover, NCP & mare provides a special facility, twin sailing, where you can charter two identical sailboats from our fleet at the same time and get a discount.

This is ideal for a larger group of sailors or for two families, as they can travel together and nevertheless preserve their privacy on their own vessels. In this case, too, it is very useful to hire the vessel with a skipper.

With twin sailing you can hire only one skipper for one vessel and the other vessel will join it on its voyage. In this way you can spend a part of the day focusing on the improvement of your sailing skills, if you wish, but you can also just indulge in the pleasure of sailing Croatia and discovering new destinations, being aware that you are accompanied by an experienced expert.

If your route includes the most crowded Adriatic destinations, such as Hvar or Vis , the skipper may book the berths in advance or he may just wait on the boat while you visit a crowded market in Hvar or Komiža and buy fresh vegetables, locally produced fruits, fresh bread and have a cup of coffee in the local coffee shop.

Then you can again head for some nice bay away from the tourist crowds.

You may have heard from your friends that they enjoyed their vacation on the sea and you want to try it yourself. A chartered vessel with a friendly skipper or full crew is an ideal opportunity to get to know the coast from the sea side, to spend your holidays in different locations without having to constantly fill and empty your luggage.

You rent a sailing boat or hire a yacht with a skipper and you can indulge in new adventures. You can choose a trip from one bay to another and enjoy the crystal-clear sea of the Adriatic islands . Alternatively, you can cruise Croatia from one place to another in order to visit the architectural pearls of the Adriatic towns , the museums, including culinary experiences in best restaurants on Adriatic , all at your own pace and without any obligation. If you like the place you visit, you can stay there for several days without being under the pressure of the schedule. And do not forget to visit about Croatian national parks , near our marina in Šibenik .

You can also travel to the farthest Adriatic islands, like Lastovo , and get to know their history since the ancient times.

Privacy aboard when renting a yacht with skipper in Croatia

Concerns can arise regarding the privacy on board, as the skipper is a member of the crew, but nevertheless a foreigner.

Anyway, guests should take into account that one cabin will be needed for the skipper himself, also in order to be able to withdraw and to make the guests feel more relaxed.

In any case, the hiring of a vessel with a skipper has its positive and also some negative sides, depending on the guests' expectations, their navigation & sailing skills and their knowledge of the coast and islands of the Adriatic Sea.

Our company NCP & mare offers several possibilities for sailing boats and motor yachts for rent with a skipper. Most of the skippers are also our sailors whom our guests get to know at the quay when taking over the boats. It means that they know in detail our big and small private yachts where they work as skippers.

Their advantage is not only in their knowledge of the behavior of the vessel at sea, but they also know how to eliminate potential defects that may occur during the voyage. They know well the aquatorium, they book either berths in the city ports or in front of the restaurants and they are discreet during the voyage.

In case our skippers are busy we have at our disposal a set of other tried skippers who earn their money accordingly throughout the season.

Price considerations of yacht charter Croatia with skipper

Yacht charter Croatia with crew or a skipper is, however, more expensive than bareboat yacht charter. Yet it is important that the skipper is provided with due insurance of the vessel.

A guest who himself takes the place of the skipper must conclude a special insurance for possible damage that is not covered by the marine hull insurance of vessels.

The skipper will provide for daily cleaning and readiness of the vessel for navigation. With the help of the local skipper guests may even get to know local customs, communicate with the locals and thus enrich their holidays.

Last but not least, a skipper, if guests take him with them to the restaurant, usually makes sure that they get fresh fish and good wine for reasonable prices.

In winter our skippers often tell stories and remember nice experiences that they shared with guests on the boat. As a rule they look forward to the new season and new adventures.

And then there is Dubrovnik , as this beautiful city is also called “the Mediterranean pearl.” You can marvel at the generous walls of the town and the old harbor where you can dock in Croatia if you hire a ferry. The old town will take you back to another era, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sailing enthusiasts in most sailing destinations, including Pula ACI Marina, Brac, Split, Dubrovnik ACI Marina, Rijeka, and Trogir, love Croatia for its modern boating infrastructure and marinas. There are also a lot of remote coves and bays to explore with your family or friends to enjoy a boating trip. Many visitors choose to rent a sailing boat, a catamaran, or a motorboat to offer an unforgettable honeymoon trip to their significant other.

You will visit Croatia’s vast multitude of islands with a charter yacht. You have a wide selection of different ports and many amazing sights to see. There is also an extensive range of motor or sailing yachts available for rent, and the prices are the lowest in the Mediterranean. Lovely, Croatia is a mix of beautiful scenery, fascinating history, and excellent infrastructure.

What are the desirable features of a Croatian yacht charter holiday?

First of all, there is the Adriatic Sea’s incredibly bright climate. The shoreline is predominantly rocky and is made up of pebble beaches, so the sea is usually not clouded by swirled sand. This adds the beautiful Venetian architecture that comes from the long period of time when Dalmatia and its ports were under the rule of the Italian city state-mainly between the 16th and 18th centuries. The blend between unspoiled nature and architecture of the Renaissance makes this part of Croatia so attractive.

The coastline of the Croatian Adriatic is 1,777 km long. It’s only 526 km from the southernmost to the northernmost point as the crow flies, but it’s one of Europe’s most indented shorelines. This means that Croatia also has a total of 5,835 km to list the shores of the islands. It, therefore, represents three-quarters of the total coastline of the Adriatic.

Of numerous small islands, there are a multitude of bays and archipelagos. 48 Permanently inhabited, most of them housing a charming medieval town. To be precise, there are 718 islands and islets along the coastline, 289 rocks, and 78 reefs. That’s why Croatia is also named the’ land of a thousand islands’ quite accurately.

Besides this, there are some of the most new ports. The yacht charter fleets are well managed, and for very little money, you get a high-quality level. With about 3500 bareboat charter yachts, you can choose to use more than 150 charter companies. Croatia is the world’s largest cruising charter region. A safe harbor is always within reach, and the atmosphere is mild. The winds are gentle, making them ideal for family sailing holidays. And if you’re chartering a yacht in Croatia, you can also enjoy the light and safe local cuisine, the view of the lush green offshore vegetation, or some of the attractions in the Krka National Park, such as the massive waterfalls.

You can cruise around the islands or sail your bareboat charter yacht along the Dalmatian coastline. To give you an example, the distance from Dubrovnik in the south to Zadar is 155 nautical miles. If you’re going to Split, you can choose from three marinas. Just southwest of the historical center, the ACI Marina Split has 364 moorings up to 80 m for yachts.

The Mariana Lav is situated 8 km southeast of the city center in a luxury hotel complex and hosts 74 ships up to 40 m in length. Ultimately, there are 400 berths for yachts up to 100 m away from the Marina Kastela, 7 km from the airport. There is Hvar, which is perfect for a party but has a beautiful old town to visit as well as an impressive fortress. Korcula has an amazing old town as well as a paradisiacal national park with lush greenery and crystal clear lakes nearby Mljet. Skradin lies with its many huge waterfalls at the entrance to the Krka National Park. You can then sail north to Krk and stop at Brac, Losinj, and many more exciting islands.

The Kornati National Park, with around 140 islands in the northern part of Dalmatia, is another hugely popular destination. It’s the Mediterranean’s densest archipelago. Mooring is allowed only in specified bays, some with mooring boys and several with restaurants. The other mooring option among the park’s islands is the Marina Piskera run by ACI on Otok Piskera’s SW side, which is open from April to October.

What are the weather systems that prevail in Croatia relevant to your boat charter?

The northern Croatian sailing season runs from June to the end of September, as it’s a bit cooler than in the south. It extends from May to the end of October.

The Bora and the Sirocco during the winter (September-May) are the dominant winds in the Adriatic. The Maestral prevails over the summer months. However, in general, summer only brings moderate winds. There are also many elongated islands parallel to the shore that are separated by channels. Therefore, for family charter holidays, the cruising grounds are very secure and completely free. The country’s sunniest part is made up of the outer islands, e.g., Korcula and Hvar. Here is recorded a whopping 2,700 hours of sunshine a year.

Skipper is in charge of driving the boat, but if there are no other crew members on board, his jobs also includes maintaining the boat, making all necessary smaller repairs during the sail, taking care of the paperwork in marinas, transferring the vessek from one marina to the other between the charters and other. He can also give you various useful advice, point out some interesting places for you to visit or things to do, answer most of your questions and show you a thing or two about navigating a boat.

He is in charge of driving the boat and taking care of your safety.

He often cleans the boat and does other similar chores to ensure proper functioning of the vessel, even though it is not his primarly job. Overall safety and pleasurable sailing mostly depend on good organisation, assigning duties and good relationship between the guests as well as between the guests and the skipper. Since you’ll be spending at least a week together at the sea, it is important that you compromise and show respect for each other. Most guests get along great with their skippers and often ask for him/her when they come back next year.

When you hire a skipper, remember that you have to save a berth for him and provide his food. Skipper spends most of the time on board and always has a plenty to do, so he doesn’t have much time to cook meals for himself, so you should take care of this – regardless if you are eating on board or dinning out.

If you want your privacy, the skipper doesn’t always have to eat with you. Sometimes he can eat after you, or go to a different restaurant. With skipper you won’t have and trouble finding a common ground, a that is one of the main conditions for pleasant and joyful sail.

Bareboat Yacht Charter in Croatia for Your Sailing Holidays!

Just think of sailing away with your family and friends in complete freedom. Sounds tempting, doesn’t it? As long as you are a reasonably experienced sailor and you have an adequate (international) skipper’s license, you can charter one of our boats without a skipper and enjoy sailing by yourself.

What is a bareboat charter?

In the bareboat charter , you as the skipper take full responsibility for the chartered boat and its crew members. Regardless of its name, a bareboat charter does not come empty or bare. Instead, the boat will be fully loaded with everything you need for a safe and comfortable sailing vacation.

Even though the skipper is the only person in charge of the boat, every other crew member should take some part in responsibility to have a safe and comfortable vacation. It is difficult for one person to take care of the navigation and make sure that everything else on board runs smoothly. Everybody on board should have their tasks and obligations and this is what makes the bareboat charter quite a unique experience in teamwork as well.

What are bareboat charter requirements in Croatia?

According to Croatian maritime law, you must have a permit issued by the state government of the country you are coming from in order to operate a pleasure vessel. Furthermore necessary is the VHF license. Check valid sailing licenses in Croatia !

Reasons to go for Bareboat Yacht Charter in Croatia

bareboat-yacht-charter-services.jpg

After discussing how bareboat yacht charters actually work, it is time to discuss why you should choose a bareboat charter in Croatia for your next vacation.

If you have a valid international skippers license, the facts listed below should help you make up your mind:

  • You will enjoy a private yacht Although our skippers are chosen both for their professional skills and for their people skills, most people prefer to have their privacy onboard a yacht. Why settle just for cabins when you can have the boat all for yourself!? You can consider it as your own piece of paradise in which you are surrounded only by your family and friends. As much as yachts can be large, they are tiny compared to the outdoors and the crew will spend a lot of time together socialising, swimming, eating and whatever they are planning on doing. If you would like to share that time only with your loved ones, the bareboat charter is the way to go.
  • You will spend less money In the bareboat charter, you are not paying for the skipper’s fee and for his food and drinks or taking him along to the restaurants that you are enjoying. So, if you are able to sail a yacht yourself and you feel confident in finding your way in the sailing area, a bareboat yacht charter will be easier in your pocket. If you are wondering   how the charter pricing work we have you covered.
  • Your family and friends can serve as the "crew". If you are looking into bareboat charters you probably like to take the helm yourself and have the full adventure and experience of a sailing holiday. The journey will be much more memorable than any typical holiday vacation because of the various roles it offers. There is no doubt that sailing together as a family or a group of friends will give you thousands of incredible memories to cherish for life. You will create a stronger bond by assigning roles and tasks to handle while sailing to the next exciting destination to explore.
  • You can sail at your own pace One of the biggest advantages of hiring a bareboat yacht charter is that you can explore the Croatian coast and islands at your own will. It will give you the freedom of sailing slowly; discovering hidden beaches and bays and snorkelling at all the best spots for as long as you want. Of course, most of these things can also be agreed with a skipper but being able to act spontaneously is an additional bonus. It will be exciting for you to sail a yacht yourself since it really builds up your confidence and voyage experience.
  • Croatia offers the largest selection of bareboat yachts If you have decided to rent a bareboat, Croatia is the place to go. With roughly 4.000 yachts to offer it is the world's main charter destination. With an international skippers license the list of yachts available to you is almost endless, from sailboats over catamarans to   motor yachts all are just a click away. Just contact us and we will find the perfect bareboat yacht for you or browse through our vast selection and pick a yacht for yourself.
  • The Adriatic sea in Croatia is easy to navigate With over 1000   islands in Croatia the sailing distances when island hopping can be really short if you want and often you do not have to cross more than 10 nautical miles to get to the next exciting destination. On top of that, the nautical infrastructure in Croatia is amazing and it offers an abundance of marinas , safe town ports and anchorages with buoys to spend your nights. The mild weather and pleasant wind on the Adriatic Sea will further make your navigation in Croatia a joy to remember.

Yachting in Croatia at its finest

In case you decide to spend your holiday in a boat and explore famous Croatian islands and cities such as Dubrovnik and Split, you are at the right place. With roughly 3.000 yachts ranging from single cabin boats to 6 cabins catamarans, Croatia Yachting is the best charter company in Croatia !

Croatia Yachting will make it simple for you by providing all the necessary nautical information: we will recommend   the itinerary , best   destinations and   restaurants to visit . All you need to bring with you are the crew and the provisioning. Even the   provisioning can be made easier for you as we can deliver the ordered items to the chartered yacht before your check-in.

Some Final Words

Well, these are more or less all the facts that speak for a bareboat yacht charter in Croatia to deliver a joyful experience on your sailing vacation. With our service, you’ll be safe and sound, your desired yacht will be in perfect sailing condition. Just   give us a call or send an e-mail and we’ll make sure you have the best possible sailing vacation!

Breaking news, i lived ‘below deck’ on a luxury yacht — here’s what you need to know.

Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.

In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.

But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.

A woman in a bikini standing on the deck of the 'Adriatic Escape' boat, ready to experience reality TV drama on the high seas in Maldives.

A tip on tipping

My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.

According to Zvonimir Androić, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.

So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.

What’s up, dock?

A luxury yacht, named Adriatic Escape, docked at Split Marina with a weekly rental price of US$52,800

In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.

I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.

“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”

Play it cool

Barbie Pascual arranging a table on the set of Below Deck Season 11.

Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.

Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.

Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.

“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”

Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.

That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.

Asking for it

A group of people on the Adriatic Escape boat, available for weekly rent at $52,800

“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.

While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.

For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.

“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, et cetera,” said Androić. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”

Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.

Yachting on a budget

Agape Rose, an ultra luxury mini cruiser yacht with various amenities, sailing on Croatia's Adriatic coast.

Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.

If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.

Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Five bodies found inside superyacht that sank off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside a superyacht that sank in a sudden storm off Sicily , Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News.

Cocina later confirmed to Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore. One passenger remains missing.

The identities of the bodies were not immediately released. Their recovery follows a dayslong search in the deep waters off Italy where British tech tycoon Mike Lynch  and several others were believed to be trapped in the hull. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived.

The rest had been missing since early Monday, when the Bayesian was caught in the storm anchored off the coast of Porticello, a village near the Sicilian capital city, Palermo.

The body of the ship’s cook, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national, was recovered Monday.

On Wednesday, NBC News witnessed what appeared to be at least three body bags being lifted from fire department boats after they pulled into port at Porticello. It was unclear whose bodies they were. Some were later transferred to ambulances and driven away from the dock.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Bayesian yacht accident in Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was among the survivors rescued by a nearby vessel after they got into a lifeboat.

Built by the Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered yacht could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist boating sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” Lynch was  acquitted of fraud by a San Francisco jury this year, stemming from the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Bloomer, who testified in his defense, and Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers, on the trip.

Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian, but in what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed  him Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello. Henry Austin reported from London.

Claudio Lavanga is Rome-based foreign correspondent for NBC News.

Claudia Rizzo is an Italy based journalist.

Who was onboard tech mogul Mike Lynch's Bayesian yacht?

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far:

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time.

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank.

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said.

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added.

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event.

Who is missing?

A collage of three men

Lawyer Chris Morvillo (left), entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer are among the missing.

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht.

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing.

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include:

  • Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
  • Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
  • Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
  • The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued?

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship.

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

  • Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
  • Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
  • Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
  • New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
  • A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy.

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006.

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million.

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges.

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling.

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion.

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support.

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

Two boats in the sea

The ship also won a string of awards for its design.

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking.

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

How did divers manage to blow up the Nord Stream pipeline? We went down to the spot to find out

German network ard chartered yacht and divers to see how sabotage occurred.

Social Sharing

It was an event that rocked Europe and shook world affairs.

Early in the morning on Sept. 26, 2022, a series of powerful undersea explosions damaged pipelines under the Baltic Sea near Denmark that carried Russian natural gas to Germany.

Fingers were immediately pointed at Ukraine, which had been at war with Russia since the latter invaded in February of that year. Ukraine denied involvement, and in the absence of reliable information, conspiracy theories proliferated about who attacked the Nord Stream pipeline.

Did a Russian submarine intentionally destroy it in order to cut off the gas supply to Germany, a country allied with Ukraine? Was it the CIA, as famed U.S. investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote?

The German government has been tightlipped about the affair for two years, but this week, German media outlets ARD, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit jointly reported that federal prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant against a Ukrainian man. A Polish government spokesperson confirmed it.

The German reports identified the man as Volodymyr Z., a diving instructor who last resided in Poland. In a brief telephone conversation on Tuesday with reporters from ARD, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit, Volodymyr Z. expressed surprise at the accusations and denied involvement.

A large body of water is shown, with clouds shown above a large surface bubbling.

A report this week by the Wall Street Journal also pointed to Ukraine, suggesting the operation was carried out by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians with diving expertise and under the direction of Ukraine's then-commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Journalists at ARD, Germany's public broadcaster, have been hot on the trail since the shocking explosions took place. I was one of the reporters who was part of the team that spent months piecing together what may have occurred.

To understand what happened to the Nord Stream pipeline that day, ARD chartered the very yacht the perpetrators allegedly used and sent divers into the roiling waters of the Baltic Sea to see how the pipeline might have been attacked.

Group chartered sailing yacht

Several outlets have reported that in early September 2022, a sailing yacht called Andromeda set sail from the port of Hohe Düne in Rostock, Germany. According to the ARD investigation, the commando that was to destroy the pipelines was on board the Andromeda. The group is said to have consisted of six people — five men and one woman. Among them, it is suspected, was Volodymyr Z.

After stops in Rügen, Bornholm and Christiansø in Denmark, Sandhamn in Sweden and Kołobrzeg in Poland, the boat returned to Rostock.

A yacht docked.

At some point during the trip, investigators believe the crew dove from the yacht down to the seabed and, in the darkness of the Baltic Sea, attached the explosive devices to the pipeline at a depth of around 80 metres.

What happened later is well-known. At 2:03 a.m. local time on Sept. 26, 2022, the first explosion damaged Nord Stream 2. Approximately 16 hours later, three other explosions damaged Nord Stream 1. Investigators later found residue of the explosive HMX, also known as octogen, on board the Andromeda.

  • Germany issued arrest warrant for Ukrainian diver in Nord Stream pipeline attack
  • Denmark, like Sweden before them, ends probe into Nord Stream pipeline 'sabotage'

During our investigation, we wondered just how hard it would have been to carry out such a mission.

The Andromeda is a charter yacht. Anyone can rent it — so we rented it, too, and took three divers with us.

As with many charter yachts, the Andromeda was not in the best condition — our skipper called it "one of the worst boats I've ever sailed with."

He said several electrical components were broken and that the yacht didn't move well in the waves. Then there was the swim platform, which the divers would need to get on and off the boat. If the swell is high, the platform moves up and down, punching into the sea. A diver trying to get back on the boat could be slammed on the head by the platform, causing serious injury. For us, this risk was too high.

A woman in sunglasses sits on a boat.

So we returned the Andromeda and chartered a professional diving vessel with a crew that usually recovers Second World War explosives from the bed of the Baltic Sea.

We then drove to the exact spot where the first explosion happened — 120 kilometres off the German coast, with the Danish island Bornholm in sight.

Trained divers required

We arrived at 6 a.m. to witness a symbolic moment in the Baltic Sea.

A Russian military ship appeared. Through our radio, we heard, "Russian warship delta echo, U.S. warship Yankee." The U.S. Navy was trying to make contact with the Russian Navy right before our eyes. How could a sabotage operation have gone on undetected in this environment?

The burst pipeline lay almost 80 metres beneath us, a depth not every diver could handle.

You need to be trained as a tech diver. At that depth, you have to breathe a special mixture of oxygen, helium and nitrogen, and that means carrying about 220 pounds of equipment.

A diver underwater.

It is also pitch black at the bottom of the sea. The multiple scuba tanks gave the divers about 40 minutes to find the pipeline, which means they needed to know precisely where to look. A sonar device was required to locate the pipeline beforehand. The Andromeda did not have this kind of device on board, but our new vessel did.

Our tech divers found the burst pipeline on their second try and filmed it.

The difficult part for the divers was returning to the surface. The pressure is so intense that if the ascent is not done correctly, divers could experience serious symptoms like paralysis or damage to their lungs. Doing proper decompression from such a depth — which requires divers to switch to a different gas mix — takes about two hours.

Conducting a complex mission like that from the Andromeda would have been difficult and dangerous. According to the German investigation, it's plausible Volodymyr Z. was trained for dives like that.

A broken gas pipe deep underwater.

Everyone who has examined the Andromeda agrees it's not the vessel anyone would choose to secure a mission.

As our tech diver Derk Remmers put it: "I would use the Andromeda for a vacation, but not a sabotage mission."

Yet this could be precisely why the saboteurs used it. To stay undetected and unaccountable — which they managed to do until the charges were made public this week.
