Visited the club to look at a boat with a broker. After viewing the boat we asked two gentleman getting on their jet skis if there was a restroom we could use. They kindly pointed us to the harbor master building by the pool. We walked by and we're very impressed with the beautiful pool and view. We walked around the building and didn't see the restroom door. We asked one of the young men working there and he walked us around to the side we missed and showered us the restroom door (clearly marked just opposite the harbor master side ) It was refreshing to be greeted by such professional and well mannered young man who didn't just tell us where to go but walked us there ! While we aren't members my husband and I were very impressed with the club, people and beautifully kept grounds !! Would love to return by boat to enjoy meeting with others at this club !

We decided to host our fall 2019 wedding at Catawba Island Club. I had searched online for venues in the area that were beautiful and also had marina access. We knew when we met with Heather that the beautiful views, amazing customer services, and package was exactly what we were looking for in a venue. We are so happy with our choice - our day was more beautiful than we could have imagined. Heather and team were flexible, responsive, professional, and organized. You can tell that weddings are CIC's sweet spot, they knew how to ensure everything would run smoothly - it was like a well oiled machine. We definitely would recommend for any venue needs!

I'm so happy with this club! My son and daughter in law had their wedding and reception here last weekend. Everything was beautiful and the food was so good considering there were 170 guests. The customer service was outstanding! My sister had a flat tire in the parking lot and almost missed her Nephew's wedding. One of the workers , Nick, changed her tire and there was a shuttle to the lakeside wedding so she made it ! You get what you pay for and that is so true at CIC. Thank you to the wedding coordinator, too, she was awesome!

Rooms are dated, tiny, expensive and ours smells like a filthy convenient. Store mixed w an ash tray. Room we reserved wasnt available and ended up stuck w no other choice! Really enjoy the 12 inch tv they mounted on the wall w only one working outlet in whole room

Hands down the best service experience on the planet, the best food I've ever eaten and I've traveled all over the country. Their Mothers day brunch is the best meal of my life .... 10 star experience. I cannot wait to go home and eat there again!

Agree with other reviews that CIC is the best club in the Great Lakes. Great atmosphere, nice people and the staff is welcoming and service oriented. Every time we are here it is like a vacation.

Photo of Hillary S.

My family and I dined here a few times when I was a child and I can only remember great times. We decided to come back last night after 15 years with some friends who are members for dinner... Now I only have negative thoughts about the CIC. We came later in the evening with a larger group, they were very accommodating and our server was nice. Everything was going fine & dandy, we all had a great time at dinner and left.. It wasn't until a few hours later that three of us started feeling horrible, and we quickly learned that we had food poisoning. Needless to say, we will not be coming back.

Lake Erie's Finest Country Club for Yachtsmen

Originally known as The Catawba Cliffs Beach Club, the concept was to offer Ohioans an exclusive family resort atmosphere. The first building constructed in 1928 was the Old Chapel which presently houses our Dockmaster's office, Galley Bar and Grill, marina showers and youth game room. Recreational sports in the early days included horseshoes, tennis, boating, golfing, bathing in Lake Erie and general relaxation. Fishing, then, as now, was a favorite sport! The first food service offered was in the Log Grill which was constructed on the site of our pool and sundeck. The Chef specialties and Club member favorites were roast beef and Sunday Chicken Dinners. We now serve as many members and guests on Labor Day weekend as were served the entire first summer at the Log Grill.

Noted early members included Mr. Hubert Bennett, then owner of Rattlesnake Island. Mr Bennett was also known for being the first to set a hydroplane down on Lake Erie waters. Other early members included D.A. Gilmore, P. K. Tadsen, A.E. Willard, Dr. E.B. Barlow, Leon Meuche and Willis Hakes. Our, dockmaster in 1930 was known for selling the hottest racing boat of the day... the 22-1/2 ft. Dart! Leslie E. Naefie, Chairman of the Board in 1931, announced initial improvements to the Beach Club. The improvements included a 24 x 104 stone terrace, the first unit of the club house, a solarium (our main dining room), lockers for men and women and 42 "fireproof" hotel rooms with connecting baths. Ground was broken on March 9, 1931.

The Stouffer Family purchased the Catawba Island Club in 1967. Immediately, Jim Stouffer, Sr., embarked on massive Club renovations which included the addition of the Terrace Dining Room, Lounge, Library and Cove Bar, a new swimming pool, fifty new docks, blacktopped the parking lot, tennis courts and construction of the Hotel Lobby. Striving for continued excellence, recent years have seen the construction of The Tavern, the Cliff Room, and remodeling of the Lounge, Library, Main Dining Rooms, Lobby and Front Desk.

More recent renovations upgrading service and facilities for our members included moving the CIC Golf Pro Shop to its newest location on West Catawba Road, a new Fitness Center, and Cove Bar expansion. Generations of families have enjoyed the Catawba Island Club and its reputation continues as the Great Lakes Finest Club for Yachtsmen. Listed are just a few of the many events planned for members to enjoy!

Voyage for Veterans

C ATAWBA ISLAND - Arriving with canes, in wheel chairs and some without any help at all, 15 veterans from the Sandusky Ohio Veterans Home were honored by the Catawba Island Club Commodores of the Blue Gavel with the second annual Voyage for Veterans at the Catawba Island Club.

The guest speaker Wednesday was Lt. Col. Jeffrey Capretto, retired U.S. Air Force.

“When I retired, it wasn’t the training, deployments or missions that I missed, it was the people that stood alongside me during all these events. It was my brothers and sisters-in-arms, that I had the privilege to serve alongside, the great American patriots, that came from all walks of life, that gave up freedoms that many take for granted, we trained together, fought together and accomplished missions,” Capretto said.  “One of the most common questions I am asked is, what I will miss most…Well, today I am surrounded by what I miss most, the bonds shared between veterans, which is difficult to explain to those who have not experienced it. It is the shared commitment to serve something greater than yourself.”

After a recognition of the veterans, they took a voyage to Put-in-Bay and the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

The event was spearheaded by past commodore David Mead, who couldn’t attend for health reasons, but was thanked by several speakers, including fellow past commodore Jeff Rolf.

"Last year we developed a humanitarian event we called Voyage For Veterans, to recognize local Veterans from the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. It went very well, so we decided to do it again, and make it a little better this year," Mead said by phone, just prior to the event. "Our Blue Gavel chapter wanted a method to give back to local Veterans while at the same time elevating the involvement of our Blue Gavel Past Commodores and our Catawba Island Club Yacht Club members in general."

Tracy Waskielis, activity therapy administrator for the Veterans Home, commented on the adjustments made since last year.

“I know because they have enhanced the program from last year, we were able to invite some more veterans. They had only been able to invite those who were ambulatory, but now those in wheelchairs were able to come,” Waskielis said.

Rolf led the event, in Mead's place, leading up to the honor walk to the “Gemini,” the yacht that took the veterans to Put-in-Bay.

"This means everything to me," Capretto said. "Anytime I can give back, I do. I tell all of these folks that one of the reasons I served is because of the example they set."

Capretto took time listening to stories from many of the veterans, like Pat Hansen, who was a nurse with the Air Force during the Vietnam era.

"She left the Air Force simply because they didn't make maternity uniforms back then," Capretto said. "Because she was pregnant and they didn't have uniforms, it's crazy to think about. It was a completely different time."

The Blue Gavel an International organization of Past Commodores from Yacht Clubs around the world.  Their mission is to carry on yachting traditions while at the same time supporting humanitarian efforts.

The event included a reception at the Catawba island Club, a formal Honor Guard from the Port Clinton VFW Post 2480, a trip to Put-in-Bay on the Yacht Gemini, lunch onboard and dockage at the Crew’s Nest in Put-in-Bay, presentations from Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial and the North Coast Veterans Museum , among other things that rounded out the day.

Bob Symonds, a Vietnam veteran, former Marine and part of the committee that developed the event, summed up and echoed what many of the attendees, who filled the grand reception tent at the Catawba Island Club, said.

“I’m a vet, so I’m one of them. Any time I can help them out, I’m just so happy to do it,” Symonds said. “They inducted me into the Blue Gavel, which is made up of past commodores, and they had the idea to do something for veterans. I raised my hand. I said I’d like to be a part of that, and it’s turned out pretty nicely.”
