Plan ahead for delicious dining experiences during your stay.

When to Book Guests may make advance dining reservations at select restaurants.

  • Guests with a Valid Disney Resort Hotel Reservation: Make reservations for your entire length of stay (for up to a 10-night stay) up to 60 days in advance of your arrival! This can help you enjoy streamlined vacation planning , since you can make all your reservations on the same day—rather than checking availability day after day.
  • All Other Guests: Make reservations up to 60 days in advance.

Explore dining experiences available for booking during your vacation.

Dining in the Theme Parks To dine at an in-park, table-service restaurant, you need a confirmed dining reservation for the total number of Guests—regardless of age—along with a park reservation and valid admission for the same park on that same date for each Guest ages 3 and up.

Dining reservations do not guarantee access to a park, and Park Hopper availability may change daily. We recommend that Guests book in-park dining at the park where they have a park reservation.

Disney’s ‘Fake Luxury’ and ‘Cosplay’ Is Costing You Thousands

in Disney , Theme Parks , Walt Disney World

Pluto and Goofy, two iconic Disneyland and Disney World dogs, outside Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

A trip to the Walt Disney World Resort is expensive, but why? What makes staying at a Disney World hotel more expensive than other luxury hotels nationwide?

Sure, a Disney World hotel has access to, well, Disney World. There is an exclusivity to staying on property that comes with some benefits.

Illustration of numerous dollar bills floating in the air in front of the iconic Disney castle under a clear blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Related: ‘ This is Insane,’ Guests Are Begging for a Change to the Most Irritating Part of a Disney World Vacation

However, since the end of the Pandemic, the exclusivity of staying on property at the Walt Disney World Resort has waned. Disney has removed many benefits that made paying the exorbitant price to keep on property worth it, including the loss of Disney’s Magical Express, free Magic Bands, and extra Magic Hours.

So, if the cost is starting to outweigh the benefits of a Disney World hotel, why are so many people lining up to do it? Well, a new video breaks down just how Disney is able to convince guests to pay outrage sums for what they call the “fake luxury” of every Disney hotel.

Review time broke down why every Disney fan needs to shell out thousands of dollars a night for a Disney hotel room and how Disney tricks you into believing you’re getting something you’re not.

So, let’s examine how Disney tricks its fans into paying for “fake luxury” through “Disney cosplay.”

The History

When Walt Disney was nearing completion of his Anaheim project, there was no Disneyland Resort; there was just a park. Walt didn’t have the money to build anything besides his theme park.

Walt turned to oil tycoon Jack Wrather to build the Disneyland Hotel after other major hotels turned him down. A few months after the completion of Disneyland, the Disneyland Hotel opened, and it was a hit.

Like with most things at Disneyland, Walt learned what changes needed to be made when he went to work on his Central Florida project. Sadly, Walt died before the completion of the Magic Kingdom.

With the completion of the Magic Kingdom, Disney opened the Polynesian Village Resort and the Contemporary Resort. Both were massive hits with guests.

Years later, Disney would open the ultimate luxury hotel in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort . The hotel was based on the classic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.

Disney owned and operated all three hotels outside of the Magic Kingdom. However, with the opening of EPCOT, Disney needed to expand its hotel offerings to accommodate the new theme park.

This brings us to the Michael Eisner era as Disney CEO. Eisner came up with the concept of the “Disney Bubble.” Once you arrived on the property, you never had to leave. The Walt Disney World Resort had everything guests needed: hotel, shopping, theme parks, and dining.

More importantly than giving guests what they wanted, the “Disney Bubble” kept guests on the property spending their money. Disney, get every last dollar you would spend on your vacation.

During Eisner’s first ten years, Disney World went from four hotels to 13, including the addition of the Beach Club, Yacht Club, and Boardwalk Hotel around EPCOT. When Eisner left Disney, the Walt Disney World Resort had 19 hotels.

Theme parks worldwide would copy this method. Everyone wants to ensure that guests spend every dollar on their property.

Disney's Beach Club Villas

Review Time I specifically compared the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. Since the Grand Floridian is based on a Southern California hotel, it seemed like an apt comparison.

A standard room at the Hotel Del Coronado costs between $300-$500 a night, depending on the season. A standard room is precisely what you’re thinking: two beds, a bathroom, and a limited ocean view.

For the same room at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, guests will pay $700-$1,000 a night, depending on the season. That is nearly double what you will pay to stay on the beach in San Diego.

Review Time said:

Disney gives guests the glamour of a historical, highly acclaimed, and architecturally significant resort without actually being a historical, highly acclaimed, and architecturally significant resort. These glamorous facades are just elaborate costumes masking a well-established framework.

Disney fans will argue that staying at the Grand Floridian Resort gives you access to the Magic Kingdom via Disney’s monorail. However, the Hotel Del Coronado gives you access to a private beach on the Pacific Ocean.

Like most things in this world, the price of a hotel room is a matter of opinion. However, Review Time describes what Disney gives its guests as “fake luxury” designed for the masses.

grand floridian

Review Time continued:

This clever design results in an experience that feels luxurious and unique on the surface, but is fundamentally geared for mass accommodations. We call this artificial opulence, and it works.

They are not necessarily wrong. A Disney Resort Hotel is designed to move as many people in and out quickly as possible. It’s the fundamental design of Disney’s business.

If guests are willing to pay for it, Disney will continue to give it to them. But is there a breaking point for guests?

The Expense of Disney World Hotels

So, how did Disney World Resort hotels get so expensive? Two words: location and convenience.

Disney learned from its mistakes at the Disneyland Hotel and kept ownership of its resort hotels. This allowed the company to charge whatever it wanted for the privilege of staying on their property.

Disney offers guests nearly everything they need on a vacation: theme parks, a pool, restaurants, and a chance to relax and enjoy themselves. For that, guests are willing to pay a premium.

A luxurious hotel at twilight with illuminated windows, featuring a large outdoor swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and lounge chairs.

Disney’s Resorts may not be traditional luxury, but the carefully craft experiences and benefits they provide for their guests still hold significant value for many. As long as people find value in the resorts, the prices aren’t going anywhere but up.

And it’s the cost that keeps going up every year. That brings us to the final piece of this puzzle: the Disney Vacation Club.

Disney’s Vacation Club

The Disney Vacation Club is the final puzzle of Disney World’s “fake luxury.” The cyclical nature of the DVC keeps costs rising for average Disney World guests and continues to put money in Disney’s pocket even if no one is showing up at the parks.

The DVC was initially created to get people into the parks during slow times. The fees Disney charges keep a steady stream of revenue coming into The Walt Disney Company even when people are not heading to the parks.

Disney's Old Key West Resort, a Disney resort hotel, at sunset.

However, this also created increased prices for people who were not DVC members through a sneaky move that Disney used to entice more people into buying DVC memberships.

By increasing hotel prices, Disney can sell the idea of saving money over time by purchasing a Disney Vacation Club membership. By getting more Disney Vacation Club members, Disney can collect more fees and build more DVC hotels.

It becomes a vicious circle that repeats itself, forcing Disney guests to pay for a Disney Resort Hotel stay or pony up a massive amount of cash to become a DVC member.

In doing so, Disney maintains a monopoly over the best access to its parks and experiences, with very few outsiders allowed in the bubble.

The Conclusion

Disney’s cycle relies on guests paying massive sums to stay on Disney property. This moneymaker has been driving Disney’s profits for decades.

However, this cycle is built entirely around guests continuing to come. But what happens if people stop showing up?

Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted that Disney has seen a dip in attendance due to a post-COVID dip. But with fewer new rides and attractions coming in the next couple of years, what if this dip is permanent or lasts for years?

Related: There’s a Laundry List of Reasons Disney World is Empty this Summer

This would result in Disney cutting costs to ensure the stockholders still receive their profits. If Disney cuts costs, it will result in lower quality at its parks, something guests have been complaining about over the last year.

To bring the quality back up, Disney will have to infuse massive amounts of cash into its parks; see this year’s D23 Expo. As a result, guests will have to pay higher prices for the Disney Park experience.

And the cycle continues.

Either way, Disney will keep its most diehard fans returning yearly and paying more and more for the experience. In the end, it makes perfect sense for them.

Do you think Disney World Resort Hotels represent ‘fake luxury’?

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Stay in a Disney Deluxe Resort

by David Lee | Aug 27, 2024 | Walt Disney World , Walt Disney World Resorts

New Moana Rooms Disney's Polynesian Village Resort

Choosing a hotel to stay in is one of the biggest decisions you have to make when planning a Disney World trip. And they sure don’t make it easy. There are countless options both on and off property across a wide budget range, from simple motels to luxury resorts.

At the top of the Disney-operated hotels are Deluxe Resorts . These properties are the cream of the crop. They feature immaculate theming, beautiful rooms and views, award-winning dining, fantastic amenities, and convenient locations.

Reasons to Avoid Disney Deluxe Resorts

So staying at a Deluxe Resort is a no-brainer when you want to make sure you have a great Disney World vacation, right? Well, not so fast. Yes, these hotels are amazing. And there’s a good chance that you will have a great time staying at them.

However, they may not be the right choice for you and your trip. And rather than potentially being disappointed due to your high expectations, read through these 5 reasons why you should NOT stay at a Deluxe Resort.

They Are Expensive

All the benefits listed above come at a cost. Want to be able to walk or take the Monorail to the Magic Kingdom from the Contemporary? Want access to Stormalong Bay, the amazing pool located at the Yacht & Beach Club? Want to see real animals on the savannah from your balcony at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

You bet there’s a high price tag for that. And since this is Disney World, it’s a very high price tag.  Depending on your room type and time of year, each night can cost from several hundred dollars to over a thousand.

If you have the budget for that, great! But many of us probably don’t want to always shell out that much for a hotel. Personally, I’d rather allocate some of that money towards other things like food, souvenirs, or park tickets. Which brings me to my next point…

You May Be Spending All Your Time at the Parks

The four theme parks are typically the main attractions at Disney World. And these parks might be the primary focus of your next trip. If you are planning a park-heavy trip where you’ll be in Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom every day (or almost every day), you may not want to stay at a Deluxe Resort. Why spend a ton of money to stay at a nice hotel if you aren’t going to be there much and be able to take advantage of its amenities?

In this case, a Value Resort may be exactly what you need. This worked out perfectly for one of my trips. All we needed was a place to sleep and a basic pool to cool off in after some long days in the parks, and All-Star Music was a perfect fit for that visit.

You Can Enjoy the Deluxe Resort Dining Without Staying There

One of the perks of staying at a Deluxe Resort is you have quick access to the excellent onsite dining options. Some of my favorite restaurants, like ‘Ohana and Topolino’s Terrace, are located at the resorts vs. the parks.

Do you want to know the best part? Unlike pools, you don’t have to be a guest of a hotel to eat at any of its restaurants!  That means even if you are staying at a Value Resort or even an off-property hotel, you can still enjoy the plethora of delicious restaurants available at the Deluxe Resorts. On a recent visit where I stayed at the Dolphin for a conference, my co-worker and I were able to enjoy all of these Deluxe Resort restaurants during our week:

  • Kona Cafe at the Polynesian
  • Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club
  • Ale & Compass at the Yacht Club
  • Sanaa at Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Topolino’s Terrace at the Riviera

Staying at a cheaper resort can be a great way to allocate your budget for some splurge dining. Just be sure to get your reservations in for the popular restaurants!

You Want More Kid-Friendly Theming

If you’re traveling with young ones, you may want theming that’s more in-your-face Disney. Despite its close proximity to the Magic Kingdom, the Victorian-style design and architecture of the Grand Floridian may not be the most appealing to kids.

However, the Value Resorts have arguably the best kid-friendly theming, with Art of Animation leading the pack. This resort has larger-than-life characters from popular Disney and Pixar films located around the property, complementing the in-room theming.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, exterior from Seven Seas Lagoon

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Photo by Danny Shuster

All-Star Movies is another great option that has theming and massive character sculptures from several favorite Disney films that’s even more budget-friendly than Art of Animation. All Value Resorts feature oversized characters and objects as part of their fun and inviting theming. My 3-year-old absolutely loved the giant yo-yo staircases we’d take to our room at Pop Century. So while Deluxe Resorts may have impressive theming and details, they’re typically not the things that kids would be interested in.

You Want to Use Points to Book a Hotel

I’m probably not the only person who wishes that Disney had some sort of hotel loyalty program like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy.  But let’s be real. Disney will likely never implement a program like this. (And we’ll still keep going back, right?) However, other travelers who have a ton of points saved up may want to redeem them for a Disney trip.

Now, here’s a little secret: you  can  get the best of both worlds by using Marriott points and getting some benefits of staying at a Deluxe Resort. Instead of staying at a Disney World-owned property, you can pick the Walt Disney World Dolphin, Swan, and Swan Reserve, which are located right by EPCOT. This puts you in walking distance of the other EPCOT Resort area hotels, the Disney BoardWalk, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Plus, while they aren’t Disney-owned, you can still qualify for the Deluxe-exclusive perk of Extended Evening Hours when staying there.

As for other point options, if you don’t mind being a little bit more removed, there are a plethora of hotels belonging to all sorts of chains around Disney World where you can cash in your points.

So while Deluxe Resorts provide some of the best hotel experiences Disney has to offer, you definitely don’t need to stay at one to have a great vacation. In fact, depending on your personal situation and preferences, it could be a huge mistake staying at one. As always, it’s important to weigh all the pros and cons before making your hotel decision for your next Disney trip!

5 Reasons to Stay at a Deluxe Resort on Your Disney World Vacation

disney yacht club menu

Staying on-site at one of Disney World’s beautiful resorts is an incredible experience – but staying at one of Disney DELUXE resorts – now that’s a dream come true! Here are five reasons to stay at one of the following Deluxe Disney Resorts:

  • Animal Kingdom Lodge
  • Beach Club Resort
  • Boardwalk Inn
  • Contemporary Resort
  • Grand Floridian Resort and Spa
  • Polynesian Resort
  • Wilderness Lodge
  • Yacht Club Resort

1 – In the Presence of Absolute Magnificence

Hands down the list you see above are the most amazing Disney resorts on Disney World property. Of course, we have other favorite resorts, but the above truly are the cat’s pajamas! Disney Imagineers’ design was at its absolute best when they developed these dream resorts. We love that is doesn’t matter what style or atmosphere you prefer, these deluxe resorts will give you the ultimate selection. Stay in class at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, cozy up in a rocking chair next to a fireplace at the Wilderness Lodge, or spread out on the beach at the Beach or Yacht Club resorts. Every detail was beautifully completed with Disney guests in mind. Something as simple as neat quotes from African tribes on the walls of the Animal Kingdom Lodge just make for the icing on the cake to the fact that there are animals roaming outside of your resort room window! Deluxe resorts are full of incredible details, and no expense was spared to make these resorts unique and awe-inspiring.

2 – Best Proximity

Deluxe resorts are beautiful inside and out, but what makes these resorts even more awesome is the fact that all of them are in close proximity to the theme parks. You can easily catch a bus at Animal Kingdom Lodge and arrive at Animal Kingdom within minutes. The Beach Club, Boardwalk Inn, and Yacht Club are within walking distance to both Epcot and Hollywood Studios, or just a simple bus or boat ride away. The Contemporary Resort is Magic Kingdom’s neighbor with an easy walking path, or catch the monorail just like you would if staying at the Grand Floridian or the Polynesian Resort. Finally, the Wilderness Lodge is a beautiful boat ride away from Magic Kingdom’s doorsteps. Ease of access to the parks not only saves time but energy – making proximity just one of the many reasons to stay at a deluxe resort!

3 – Eat Your Heart Out

Dining with a cherry on top is the best way we can describe these deluxe resorts’ dining options. There really is no need to leave your resort to dine elsewhere! Our favorites within these resorts would have to be Ohana at the Polynesian, Whispering Canyon at the Wilderness Lodge, California Grill, and Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary, 1900 Park Fare at Grand Floridian, and Cape May Café at the Beach Club Resort. This is just a highlighted list from the vast dinner selections. You’ll know the food is prepared by some of the greatest Disney Chefs when you take a bite of your meal. Quick service, table service, and even fine dining can be what’s on the menu for either breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or all of the above!).

4 – Extra Pixie Dust

We love knowing that spending a day at a deluxe resort would be an easy task when staying at one of these resorts. Shopping, swimming, lounging, gorgeous views, walking paths, bike and/or boat rentals, arcades, recreation options… the list goes on! Did we forget to mention the unbelievable spa (Senses) at the Grand Floridian? Spend a day indulging in Senses spa treatments, and you’ll immediately be feeling the extra pixie dust surrounding you! Plus, the extra pixie dust at deluxe resorts really is poured down from their paramount guest services. You’ll find excellent service just about everywhere on Disney property, but we love that there is something elite about the services and guest care provided at deluxe resorts.

5 – Because You Deserve It

Sure, this may be #5, but it really is the most important and one of our favorite reasons to stay at a deluxe resort. For many, Disney is a one-time deal, or if not one-time, not again for a while to come. We feel like, especially if this is the case, you deserve to let yourself splurge and remember this moment and vacation like no other. We aren’t saying that you can’t have an awesome time elsewhere, but deluxe resorts simply provide guests with the whole package. Yes, you can expect to pay more per night at a deluxe resort, but you’ve worked hard and saved up and deserve this moment in the Florida sun at a destination that will treat you like you own the place.
