The 420 is one of the most desirable and best built yachts Island Packet has ever offered. The hull incorporates a host of design elements that improve a concept that emphasizes seakeeping, safety, stability, and speed.

The bow and stern configurations combine to increase boat speed through a longer sailing waterline and reduced resistance in waves, while refinements to the keel and rudder foil sections benefit upwind performance, reduce drag, and enhance steering.

The hull continues to be molded as a one-piece (integral hull and keel) solid tri-axial fiberglass structure, utilizing Island Packet's pressure-fed resin impregnation system, PolyClad 2 gel below the waterline, and DuraShield gel on the topsides.

The 420 deck design offers all the key features long appreciated by Island Packet owners: recessed foredeck with bulwarks, anchor platform with two rollers (the exclusive SeaSafe patented design), full-length stainless steel cabin top handrails, beautifully molded detail for hardware, an improved dodger - windshield mount, and Dorade vents with stainless steel cowls and welded guards.

The boat's chain plates are fixed to the hull with a system of double welds, embedded in fiberglass and reinforced with uni-directional glass and bi-axial glass run fan-like well down into the hull. It's a proven, time-tested Island Packet system, using annealed, corrosion resistant 316L stainless steel alloy.

Engine mounts, mast step (on the keel), 12-volt wiring system, and steering systems show the same attention to detail as the hull-deck joint and chain-plate systems.

An innovative blend of liveaboard comfort and practical cruising features is evidenced throughout the IP-420, delivering the best accommodations of any yacht in its size range.

Starting forward is a large anchor locker with interior access through a tall door in the forward head. This locker has custom shelves for fender storage and a separate compartment for spare dock line storage.

The forward head features a separate shower stall with acrylic door, a stainless steel sink with vanity, marine toilet rebuilt 2023, several lockers and drawers, plus excellent ventilation with an overhead hatch, two opening portlights.

The forward owner's suite is a true delight with the entire beam of the yacht utilized for a grand and inviting retreat. The large island berth is offset from the hull providing easy access from both sides. A dressing seat is to port. Drawers, cabinets, storage bins and a deep hanging locker provide ample storage.  

Next aft is the main salon featuring Island Packet's signature bulkhead mounted fold-up table. The settee cushions are covered in Toast Ultra leather, with custom lee cloths stowed beneath the port and starboard cushions. The starboard settee pulls out to provide a double berth.

Next aft to starboard is the navigation station with an electrically powered swing-out seat and large hinged chart table.

The galley, immediately to the starboard side of the companionway, features double S/S sinks, a 3-burner propane stove with oven, microwave, generous wrap around counter space, and a large refrigerator and freezer.

To port is the aft head with entry from the salon or aft cabin, shower with wrap-around curtain, stainless steel sink with vanity, marine toilet rebuilt 2023, cupboards, and mirror.  

The aft cabin features a large berth, large cedar-lined locker, numerous drawers, and USB outlets.

All hatches have custom Glebe Creek teak-framed insect screens. 

The cockpit has full-length contoured seats that accommodate a large crew or invite stretching out. A folding teak cockpit table, with teak drink holder, provides a comfortable place for outdoor dining, and stows out of the way when not needed.

The helmsperson will enjoy excellent visibility. The console mounted steering features Island Packet’s trademark rack and pinion geared design, providing a combination of control, reliability, and strength unmatched by any other wheel steering design. The steering wheel is covered in leather for enhancement of the grip and better control, and the single lever engine control lever is right on the pedestal. The engine panel itself is within easy reach of the helm and features full analog gauges for all readouts.

Cockpit convenience features abound with standard details such as built-in insulated beverage locker, two large seat lockers with gas support struts with easy access, a handheld cold water shower that easily reaches the stern swim step, deep swim ladder with rubber treads and two stern rail seats.

The deck is laid out with ocean passages in mind, with wide walkways, raised bulwarks forward, full length continuous stainless steel cabin top handrails, double lifelines with welded rails fore and aft, premium diamond pattern slip resistant surface, all designed to enhance safety and security while moving about on the deck. The large, central living area is equally suited for social gatherings, off-watch retreats, or gourmet dining. Full-length, facing settees are incorporated, with the starboard L-shaped settee able to convert into a double berth with a pull-out extension. Island Packet's trademark folding dining table hinges from the bulkhead storage rack to provide for either a large serving - dining area or, when retracted, a completely open salon. Large storage areas are available under and behind both port and starboard settees, in cabinets outboard, and above the settees, and in a cedar lined hanging locker. Large capacity tanks for water and fuel are located under the sole, keeping these considerable weights low and close to the center of the yacht to maximize stability and increase useful storage elsewhere. The full-size navigation table with hydraulic swing-out seat - adjacent to the main salon - should please the most ardent navigator, and includes recessed master electrical distribution panels.

Beautiful cabinetry and joinery work in select varnished teak, well place light fixtures and handrails, numerous opening ports, deck vents and hatches, and durable and easily maintained overhead and hull surfaces make this salon and the entire interior as attractive as it is practical.

For comfort in heat or cold, reverse cycle air conditioning is provided, with outlets in salon, forward cabin, and forward head.  When you don't wish to run the AC, four 2-speed Hella fans are strategically placed throughout the Salon and cabins to provide a breeze.

The spacious galley, immediately to the starboard side of the companionway, is easily accessible to the cockpit and the main salon, and features numerous convenience details for the cruising sailor.

A generous, wrap around counter provides ample work-space for food preparation while numerous drawers, lockers and laminate-lined cabinets offer abundant space for organized provisioning and galley-ware storage.

A 3-burner Force 10 three burner propane stove with oven and separate microwave provide options for cooking. Dual Stainless Steel sinks are supplied by the pressurized water system with spray tap, as well as a hand pump (not currently working). A slide-out trash receptacle is strategically located. The well-insulated Frigoboat refrigerator and freezer (new 2022), features a lid that opens on a gas strut to reveal a divided, lighted interior. It includes a keel-cooler for maximum efficiency.  

A General Ecology Seagull water filter provides pure drinking water through a separate faucet. 110v and 12v power outlets are easily accessible.

The spacious owner's cabin is located forward and includes a private head compartment with stall shower. The stateroom has a large double berth offset to starboard and angled away from the hull side to allow access from either side. The berth top is hinged and supported with gas struts and may be raised to access a generous storage bin underneath for blankets and the like. Additional drawers, lockers, shelves, and a cedar lined hanging locker provide ample room for personal items. A dressing seat adds further convenience, and two deck hatches, a Dorade Vent, and several opening ports will keep this area bright and breezy. The adjoining head has a sink vanity with cabinet space over and under, and linen drawers. The shower includes a molded seat and folding textured acrylic door that stows flat against the bulkhead when not in use.

The aft guest stateroom is accessed through a private entrance on the port side of the salon. It has a wide double berth, ample storage in a hanging locker and locker. Petrel 12 (Rhodes)

Petrel 12 (Rhodes) is a 12 ′ 0 ″ / 3.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes and built by AeroCraft (USA) starting in 1966.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

• What’s inside a boat plan ?

I love sincere , honest sailboats; I don’t believe that a sailboat can perform well in family cruising, buoy racing, offshore racing. This was my leading concept when I choose to design Petrel 28 plans: a sturdy, reliable, safe, honest, roomy, mediterranean cruising sailboat suited for homebuilders.

This means that for this sailboat I start to develop coherently a totally new hull, with quite symmetric lines, a decent but not excessive maximum beam, more than an eye to the seakeeping performances, and just a glance at speed performances, somehow a “classical modern hull”, developing hull lines that can be built from plywood panels with “radius chine” system . The three sailboats launched (two by homebuilders), and the thousands miles sailed, confirmed that my goals have been reached: the Petrel performs beautifully in every conditions, from light air to rough seas, has a great amount of stability when heeled, keep a straight line without viciously pointing the bow on the wind under gusts, it’s a very enjoyable sailboat to helm with a fingertip even on strong winds, somehow more similar to classic sailboats than to modern ones. Thanks to a good sailplan (mainsail + jib+ small gennaker) , the pace is quite good in every condition, the sailboat reaches his critical speed, around 6 knots, very easily, accelerating steadily after the tacks even in light winds, although the sailboat is not a featherweight one. Interiors are simply huge for a 8.5 meters sailboat, height is more than 1.75 meters in the whole cabin; a family of four people have a more than a decent accommodations for a medium range cruise. Hatches makes all the cabin very bright. The hull is built in plywood and epoxy, with radius chine solution, which is probably the smartest way to make a round hull without getting in too much troubles for a homebuilder; bulkheads, hull planking, deck and cockpit surfaces are all in marine grade okume or mahogany plywood, while keel , stem, longitudinal stringers and deck and cockpit battens are in solid mahogany wood. All is glued together by epoxy resin and glass tapes reinforcements, to form a very sturdy hull quite fast to build for a homebuilder. In the snapshots on the gallery you can see the 2013 version of plans with a more modern line for the plywood cabin, giving more pleasing lateral line to the sailboat with a minimal loss of internal volume; plans are available both in english and in italian and in imperial units upon request.

Sailing down the river

I just got a SB-12 Petrel sailboat and in the back are 2 big holes about 2 inches across. The guy said that they are to have plugs in them And that they are for draining the sailboat. He could not find replacement plugs. Are they necessary, could i have them closed in. I know in my motor boat I have them but they Are only one inch across and you have to be going quite fast when you pull them out to drain. So where could i buy the big plugs, if that is what is supose to be there or can i fill them in. Also i have no idea how to set everything up, the ropes the mast, actually, he just gave it all to me and i have to figure it out. Is there a sight i can go to see how to rig it all up. The serial no says. SB-12. 121. But the sail says. Sb 350. Pls can someone help me.

Not familiar with the hull, but a hole is a hole. I would caution against anything permanent till you get more info. I would suggest 2" test plugs commonly available at lowes and home depot. Insert them in the holes and turn the thumb screw and they expand until a rubber gasket seals the hole. Eric  

Tennis Balls Run a bungee cord through the tennis ball then pull it through the drain hole, now secure the bungee so that there is just enough tension to hold the ball over the hole and your all set.

That vessel might sail dry with the holes open, it may be a type of self bailing system, have you tried floating it yet?  

No i have not put it in the water, the holes are only an inch from the bottom, so once i get in it the water will come in  

The holes are to drain the boat after capsize. You sail with plugs in.

used to call this transom flaps. So you had a piece of plexiglass hinged at the top of the hole, pulled to seal by a bit of bungy cord fastened somewhere in the boat. So normally sealed. Post capsize the boat has water in it, loose the bunny cord as you start sailing again all the water rushes to the back of the boat and out the transom flaps, dry in no time.  

Actually strike that, the Petrel used funnels to plug those holes. Find a funnel bigger than the hole, bungy cord with a knot in the middle fasten the bungy on the inside of the boat, it is water tight. Post capsize once you are righted release the bungy.

Squash balls, rubber balls etc, and yes remove them after capsize to drain boat

PETER THE GREAT

Randall Kleeman led a class of 12 students at the Anglo-American School of Moscow, Russia, in the construction of PETER THE GREAT, an Iain Oughtred Whilly boat design. The boat carries 80 sq ft of sail and weighs about 140 lbs. The class built the glued-lap hull from okoume plywood, oak, and spruce. They shaped the spars with handtools.The class built 5 boats over the school year--four sailboats and a kayak. They used four of the boats to raise funds for the school, and donated the fifth, PETER THE GREAT, to the Russian Navy Cadet Program, where it will be used for training young sailors at Stragino Yacht Club on the Moscow River, the Volga River, and the Gulf of Finland.In the first picture, you can see the students christening PETER THE GREAT. After that, you'll see the school director shaking hands with Cadet Commander Georgi Andronov, as Randall Kleeman looks on.
