Asia Global Yachting launches in Southeast Asia

New company focuses on charter, sales and brokerage in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore

On September 14, Nicolas Monges, a veteran organiser of Asia-based yachting events, announced the creation of a new charter, brokerage and new yachts sales service agency, Asia Global Yachting (AGY), which is based around Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. He joins AGY co-founder Xavier Fabre, who has worked in the Indonesian yacht market for years.

Xavier Fabre, Co-Founder and 25-year industry expert stated, “Excellence is the key factor here with attention to detail and bespoke service of paramount importance,” said Fabre in a statement. “For too long, the industry has sat on its laurels; that ends now as we move forward into a new era of yachting consultancy.” In addition to yacht charter, brokerage, new yacht sales and yacht management services, AGY is also promoting itself as a marina consultant, yachting events organiser and concierge services provider.

The government of Thailand has indicated its desire to expand the yachting business as a way to recover its tourism industry in the wake of Covid-19 restrictions. Marinas are also expected to be part of Indonesia’s attempt to rebuilt its own tourism industry.

Super Typhoon Yagi wreaks havoc in Asia

Key manufacturing and shipping hubs in China and Vietnam are grappling with widespread disruptions and closures in the wake of super Typhoon Yagi, one of most formidable storms to ever hit the region.

The super typhoon made landfall on the Chinese island of Hainan Thursday. Moving westward, Yagi has forced a million people to evacuate in southern China and claimed more than a dozen lives in Vietnam, as well as damaging the industrial region of Haiphong, which hosts several international companies’ factories, including LG Electronics .

Meanwhile, businesses, public services, and transportation networks closed in the Chinese province of Guangdong and Hong Kong, creating a mounting backlog in manufacturing and shipping that some companies expect will take weeks to resolve, and drive up costs.

China had already seen an earlier and more intense flood season in 2024, especially in its manufacturing hubs in Guangdong, with analysts directly citing climate change as a factor in the country’s latest factory activity data, which fell below expectations, Bloomberg noted.

Carlyle appoints anuj poddar as co-head of global portfolio solutions for asia.

Newly created role to further enhance portfolio company value creation capabilities in India and Southeast Asia

Hong Kong and Mumbai, India, September 9, 2024 – Global investment firm Carlyle (NASDAQ: CG) today announced the appointment of Anuj Poddar to the newly created role of Co-Head of Global Portfolio Solutions (GPS) for Asia, focusing on India and Southeast Asia.

In his role, Mr. Poddar will work closely with Carlyle Asia’s country investment advisory teams, Janine Feng, Vice Chair of Carlyle Asia, who oversees value creation strategies and initiatives in Asia, as well as with Richard Elder, Global Head of GPS in the U.S., to help drive transformational change and performance with portfolio companies. He will be based in Mumbai.

Mr. Poddar has over 30 years of corporate leadership and management consulting experience where he has demonstrated success in driving organizational transformation and business growth. He joins from Bajaj Electricals, a leading consumer appliances and lighting solutions company in India, where he served as CEO and spearheaded the turnaround and transformation of the 80-year-old company.

Prior to Bajaj Electricals, Mr. Poddar was a member of the senior leadership team at Viacom18 Media in India, where he played an integral role in the growth of the company, including its successful foray into mass entertainment and expansion into regional and international markets. While at Viacom18 Media, he also led strategy for MTV Networks Asia for Southeast Asia and China, based out of Singapore. Prior to Viacom18 Media, he spent nearly a decade with KPMG and Arthur Andersen, where he provided consulting, M&A and other services to companies across sectors.
