Port Edgar Marina

More than boats.

Port Edgar Marina is a vibrant setting nestling on the Firth of Forth between the Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing.

Not just for boat owners, it’s a thriving watersports centre with great naval history, neighbouring harbours, boat tours and nice places to eat and shop.

If you want to get out on the water, the marina is home to one of the largest sailing schools in Scotland. Their taster sessions and guided trips are great if you want a fun experience with family and friends – try paddleboarding, windsurfing, keelboat sailing, canoeing or sea kayaking. If sailing’s your thing, the Yacht Club has some of the most active yacht racing programmes in the country.

Another way to get out on the water is via a sightseeing boat tour departing from Hawes Pier. A wide choice of operators pick up from the marina. Choose from thrilling RIB trips, views of Blackness Castle, a sedate cruise to the historic Inchcolm Island, a wildlife tour or yachting under the bridges. You can even charter a boat for your own tailor-made trip.

At low tide, the mudflats at Port Edgar (part of the Firth of Forth Site of Special Scientific Interest - SSSI) are a great place to spot wildlife. The mudflats provide the perfect habitat for waders, and you might even spot seals, dolphins, porpoises and puffins. Bring your binoculars!

From its humble beginnings as a fishing and ferry harbour, Port Edgar has an interesting history. In its time it has served as a naval base, with nearby Butlaw serving as a holiday camp for the families of the unemployed, a military hospital and a naval training centre.

Nowadays, it’s a thriving marina, perfect for a relaxed day out. Take a wander to admire the moored boats, enjoy some retail therapy at the specialist brand retailer Beacon Stores or check out all things boat-related in the chandlery. Pop into artisan producer Coco Chocolatier for divine chocolate experiences and follow with dinner at Down the Hatch, Scotts Bar and Restaurant, or at weekends, Outboard – the outside eating set up.

Top it all off with a romantic evening boat tour. It’s the ideal leisurely weekend or holiday treat!

Edinburgh Marina

The Marina for Central Edinburgh

Visitor Information

Granton is well placed for yachtsmen visiting the Forth as a destination or in passage North or South.  It is one of the few places to stop-over between Blyth and Peterhead. Although it is some 20 miles from the mouth of the Forth it is a good stop-over location to visit Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Marina Ltd is jointly owned and managed by the Forth Corinthian Yacht Club (FCYC) and the Royal Forth Yacht Club (RFYC).

Unfortunately there are no fuel facilities at Granton for visitors or members due to legal restrictions.

Granton Harbour - (Google Maps) - Click to view full-size image.

There are frequent buses into Edinburgh City Centre (Service 16) and direct to/from Edinburgh International Airport. (Service 200).

The pontoon has water points and hoses but craft should ideally provide their own hose and use of the pontoon hoses is at the owner’s discretion. There is no shore power.

The pontoon benefits from 24hr CCTV monitoring.

Toilet and shower facilities are available at the FCYC club quarters at all hours and also at the RFYC clubhouse while the clubhouse is manned. During the season the RFYC clubhouse is usually open every day during daytime hours.

TO PAY BERTHING FEES :  Visitors should preferably register and pay online at:-

https://theedinburghmarina.co.uk/register-and-pay-online

The security gate code will be given when payment is received.

Alternatively, come into the RFYC club office (09:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs Tuesday to Friday) to register/pay and be given the access number for key-pad access to the clubhouse, which will normally allow entrance during daytime hours.  These hours may vary due to operational reasons.

For those unable to pay by the above methods, there is an Honesty Box situated just inside the EML security gate. Please fill out the boat details on the envelope and deposit, with enclosed payment, in the metal box.

Berthing charge for visitors is £3.00/m LOA (rounded to nearest 0.5m) per night. Access to the pontoon from land is by keypad, with the number available on payment of berthing charge. No stay can be for more than 14 days except by prior arrangement.

A History of Port Edgar Yacht Club

Port Edgar Yacht club was formerly known as Queen Margaret Yacht Club and was originally based in North Queensferry.

The Beginning

The first founding meeting of the club was held at Cliff Cottage, North Queensferry at 3pm on Sunday 9th February 1969. The membership fee was set at £2 2s 0d and a draft constitution was discussed. (When decimalsation was introduced two years later the membership fee dropped to £2.)

The inaugural AGM was held in the Tartan Room at the Roxburgh Hotel, North Queensferry on Thursday 13th March 1969.

Early offer of Clubhouse Building !

The club was offered a house called the `Black Cat Inn in North Queensferry if suitable accommodation could be found for the old lady who was living in it. In the event planning permission was turned down (no mention of what the plan for the old lady was ?!)and the committee chose instead to purchase a second hand caravan for £240. Forth Yacht Marina offered to host the clubhouse on ground they leased from Fife County Council. The inn was subsequently developed into cottages and is a listed building (see picture taken 2013 below)

Port Edgar Marina is a popular, year-round leisure destination for boat owners and their families, sailing enthusiasts and watersports activities and is home to a wide range of businesses, organisations and clubs. There’s plenty to see and do in the local area and the picturesque town of South Queensferry is a great place to start. An ancient former Royal Burgh, the old town is a conservation area with a narrow cobbled High Street and many historic buildings. It boasts a range of local amenities and some excellent restaurants, bistros and bars. There are a number of important historic houses and estates in the area too, including Dalmeny, Hopetoun and Dundas.

The mud flats at Port Edgar which are exposed at low tide are part of an extensive Firth of Forth Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Much of the shoreline and the islands in the Firth are covered by national and international designations. It’s a great place to watch for wildlife, including seals, dolphins and porpoises, or view a great diversity of birds, especially waders that favour the mudflats.

A great way to reach Port Edgar is by bike. From Edinburgh you can cycle all the way to the marina via the  Sustrans  path. You can also enjoy the exciting Vat Run mountain bike trail at South Queensferry.

Firth of Forth

The Firth of Forth is a fine stretch of water for day sailing and there are good opportunities for cruising longer distances either up river to Bo’ness and Charleston or down river towards the harbours of the East Neuk of Fife on the north side and Dunbar on the south. The waters off Granton are superb for racing. Local racing takes place between the islands of Cramond, Inchmickery and Inchcolm to the west of Granton, and Inchkeith to the east. Longer distance racing is to harbours such as Anstruther, Dunbar and Eyemouth. East Coast Sailing week takes place here every third year (and on the Tay and off Northumberland in the intervening years). The annual Edinburgh Regatta is based at Granton and there is a full programme of racing on the Forth co-ordinated by the Forth Yacht Clubs Association.

Granton lies on the South Shore and is served by bus from all parts of Edinburgh. The harbour provides safe refuge in all weathers and is easy of access. Yachts normally take the ground which is soft mud, and keel yachts lie safely to a mooring without attention. The layout of the harbour can be seen on the chartlet in the Forth Yacht Clubs Association pilot. Note that vessels approaching the pontoons near low water should keep within two boatlengths of the pontoon and go no further south than the end of the pontoon to avoid shallow water. All the moorings in the harbour belong to either the Forth Corinthian Yacht Club or the Royal Forth Yacht Club. The Edinburgh Marina Company, which is jointly owned by both clubs, manages pontoon berths on the East side of the Middle Pier. Visiting yachtspeople are welcome. Water is available on the pontoon, fuel is available from the Royal Forth Yacht Club and buses to Leith and the centre of Edinburgh leave frequently from Granton Square. The nearest chandlery is Seaspan (currently operating out of the ‘Go Outdoors’ carpark). Port Edgar, immediately to the west of the Forth Bridges, includes a marina with full facilities. Further west lies Grangemouth and the entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal. There are deep water harbours elsewhere in the Forth, but these are purely commercial ports and not recommended except in cases of emergency. These harbours are Leith, Burntisland, Kirkcaldy, and Methil. The strongest winds tend to come from the South West and the North East. When winds are forecast from the South they are usually much lighter than predicted. In sunny anticyclonic conditions the sea breeze starts about 13:00 off Inchkeith and works its way upriver veering and strengthening. Wind over tide can kick up unpleasant short steep seas, particularly over the extensive shallows south of Inchmickery. The spring tidal range is 6 metres. Tidal rates seldom exceed a strength of one knot except at the entrances to harbours and between the islands when rates in excess of two knots are not uncommon. Tidal predictions for Granton can be obtained here . There are two excellent pilots: • Forth Yacht Clubs Association’s Pilot Handbook: East Coast of Scotland, Berwick to Fraserburgh • Martin Lawrence’s The Yachtsman’s Pilot North and East Scotland, The Farne Islands to Cape Wrath

The Moorings - Residential Apartments

Location Location Location – as the saying goes – are the first three most important factors in any property development.

Edinburgh Marina is ideally situated at Granton, less than 2.5 miles (4 km) from the city centre, only 7.5 miles (12 km) from Edinburgh International Airport and 12 miles (20 km) to The Forth Road Crossing.

forth yacht marina

That means residents will not only be able to enjoy a short journey into Edinburgh Old and New Town, but they’ll also have the benefit of stunning views across to the Kingdom of Fife. It’s the best of both worlds: the feel of a village, with strong links to the wider community and Edinburgh city centre.

The Marina will be connected by road, tram and water. The Forth Bridge – a World Heritage site overlooking the Firth of Forth – is just minutes away, and the forthcoming tramline extension will have a dedicated stop right outside the new development.

This is the curious story of a russian city named after an italian politician, palmiro togliatti.

There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.

Who was Palmiro Togliatti?

If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.

Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.

Tolyatti, the Russian city

The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.

A shiny, green vintage Lada car model sitting on a driveway.

Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.

Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.
