Royal London Yacht Club

The Royal London Yacht Club, although not having such an interesting history as the older metropolitan organization, the Royal Thames, came into existence very similarly —that is, it sprang from a club which was devoted to small-boat sailing, and many of its earlier matches were sailed above bridges. The organization out of which the club was formed was known as the Arundel Yacht Club, and was one of the many kindred societies which have flourished at different periods on the banks of the Thames. When the sizes of yachts increased, and it was no longer possible to indulge in racing in the neighbourhood of Battersea, a move was made to Erith.

The title was altered to the London Yacht Club in October, 1845. In the following year it obtained permission to use the arms of the City of London in its burgee, and an Admiralty warrant was granted to the club on October 17, 1849. Shortly prior to that date, the Queen Dowager Adelaide had consented to become patroness of the club—the last yacht club destined to receive that honour from Her Majesty. The club for many years had quarters in Savile Row, but has quite recently moved into the premises of the Blenheim Club, whose house it now shares. It opened a branch at Cowes, so that it holds regattas both on the Thames and in the Solent. For many seasons the Royal London has been in the habit of opening the Cowes Week with a series of races for all the most important yachts, and this has often proved the fullest day’s racing of the whole week. With a number of members of the Cowes section resident in the Isle of Wight, it takes its full share of the local racing of the Solent.

The burgee of the Royal London is familiar in all European ports, and, as far back as 1852, the Vice-Commodore, Mr. Bartlett, carried off a prize presented by the Imperial Yacht Club of St. Petersburg at the Cronstad Regatta. The club has always been keenly alive to the interests of the sport, in all its branches; and in each of the last two years has offered prizes for a race from Cowes to the Clyde, in the endeavour to attract the big yachts to the Northern regattas. The course for its regatta on the Thames is the same as that set by the other clubs ; and, in agreement with the Royal Thames, the Lower Hope, Mouse and Gravesend course has been reverted to this year, after a few seasons’ trial of that off Southend. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales is patron of the club.

The Royal London Yacht Club, formed in 1838, is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs in Britain.

The Club was started by a group of gentlemen who sailed on the River Thames and met regularly at the Coal Hole Tavern off the Strand and kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps and thus the Arundel Yacht Club came into being. In 1845 the Members voted to assume the title ‘London Yacht Club’. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a white ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and   a gold star in the canton below and in 1846 the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star.  In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of William IV, became   Patron   of the London Yacht Club and thus became ‘Royal’, and at that time, the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs.  A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a blue ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly. A burgee was adopted which, unlike   many   clubs, actually   corresponded   with   the ensign.

The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread but in 1882 it was decided to move to Cowes where a lease was taken on the two Regency houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today.

the royal london yacht club

Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day and it still is to this day. Royal patronage came again when in 1893 the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911 when he ascended the throne as King George V. The present Admiral is HRH the Princess Anne who succeeded her Father the Duke of Edinburgh in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days when the Club fostered innovations and was instrumental in establishing a universal  set of rules and system of measurement.

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the now annual Cowes Classics Week is probably the most successful event that the Royal London has run for many years.

The regatta has been growing year on year and is being referred to as ‘the Goodwood Revival of Yachting’ and ‘one of Europe’s most important classic yacht regattas’.

In 2016 the Club will be running World Championships for the Tempest and Etchells classes.

St. Petersburg Yacht Club

Rich in history and tradition, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the United States. Established in 1909 and having been completely renovated in the early 1990s, the Club is located on the beautiful waterfront in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. A gathering place for avid boaters, it is also one of Tampa Bay’s most prestigious social venues. The yacht club is famous for its standard of race management and events are run almost all year round. Juniors learn to sail. Sailors have represented the club all over the world.

Stories from St. Petersburg Yacht Club

St Petersburg’s city fathers had ambitious plans for their commercial docks: create waterfront parks and a yacht club. The St Petersburg Yacht Club was founded in 1909. Following the reclamation and completion of the waterfront, the clubhouse was inaugurated on its current site in 1917. Two years later, 6 Fish Class sailboats were acquired and one design racing began. Several classes have returned annually for over 60 years. Offshore racing started with the Havana Race in 1930. As forerunner of SORC, both brought sailors from all over the world to Tampa Bay.
